JOB OFFER.
If this is my first job as an MT, and I got offered 7 cents a line would you take it. IC status, part time. Should I take it, or I should I keep looking?
Any suggestions would be helpful..
JOB OFFER.
Thanks so much for the advice!
had one co. offer
3 c per minute dictation and another one for 2 c per line so that offer is better than what I had as a newbie. What was worse was that I got all the bad dictations, i.e., lots of static and purely poor dictators (the kind who mumbles). Take that for experience and then move on once you get your feel.
job offer
Does anyone know anything about MediVoxx or Accuscribe? Thanks.
oh my gosh - don't take the offer
they are a scam!! Huge SCAM!! Please do a search on this board to see.
There are companies that offer
"internships," but a lot of them are scams. If any company requires you to pay $$ upfront or to buy equiptment/software from them you can be sure they are a scam. If in doubt ask about them here. You can post your resume on the various free job boards and you may get a response from a company who might not post ads on the boards.
Just thought I offer (sm)
this link to HPI's website. They have helpful books and other resources. I don't work for them, but I like their Radiology Imaging Words and Phrases book and some others.
That's why companies offer less and less.
They know newbies will take whatever the company offers for experience. Don't you think you're worth more than that? I turned down every offer that was less than 8 cpl after I graduated. It's insulting yet fruitful because of "experience."
NO courses can offer certification
Just to clarify, there are no courses which can offer "certification" in medical transcription, so there aren't any "certification courses."
If you want certification, you have to take the AAMT certification examination, which, if you pass, will grant the CMT certification.
Other than that, you can take a course which will give you a "certificate of completion." And that is only worth the price of a piece of paper. Having that piece of paper is not what will get you a job.
What gets you a job is the ability to transcribe well enough that an employer doesn't have to train you all over again.
And then you have to keep it, so the transcription skills you pick up in school had better be top-notch or you'll be wishing you had just gotten a job at MacDonald's.
New MT needs advice on at home job offer...
Hi, I am a new Medical Transcriptionist and I need a little advice. I received a job offer through CompuSystems, Inc. Has anyone heard of them? They offered me 6 cents per line transcribed. They also told me I needed a voice recognition device...what is this? What does an "Independent Contractor" involve exactly? Is 6 cents per line good for new MTs? I know this is alot...I apologize...just need some advice...
A footpedal is around $79, so if they offer one it sounds good to me.

DeVenture MIGHT offer only hours required, but not
s
MTEC does offer financial assistance.
While MTEC is expensive it is also one of the top 2 MT schools out there. You get what you pay for. Also, they do accept financial aid. Check out their site, they have a person on staff that handles situations just like yours!
(Oh yea, I am a student at MTEC!)
Does WebMedX offer a mentoring program for newbies?
s
Places DO offer ophth. only accts, but you'll still have to train for
s
should I apply anyway?
When companies say they are looking for experienced MTs only, should I apply with no experience but a grad of one of the top MT schools?
Apply and see what happens (sm)
If you've done the SUM tapes, you've done them. Either you picked up what you were supposed to pick up, or you didn't. Try getting one of the self-assessment tapes from the AAMT testing program (they're retired tests), if they still have them. If you can do it and it looks pretty much like the transcript key when you are done, you've probably learned what you needed to learn. Try to get a service to test you.
If you cannot pass a national service test, and you cannot find a job with a local employer, then you would want to take a course.
Apply, apply, apply to everything...sm
unless the ad specifically says no new grads. I applied to everyting advertising for two years or less. You will be surprised at how many companies will offer you to test with them. I did not go to one of the big three schools and was still able to get a lot of decent offers. You have to have the confidence in your skills to go after the job! While you are applying and waiting, keep practicing so you are always on top of your skills. Read the ads carefully--if they only specify two years of experience and nothing about being new then apply to them! You should get offers to test with them and then let them see your skills! Good luck to you!!!
APPLY EVERYWHERE!
The work is out there. Go to the Job Seeker's Board and apply for everything that you qualify for. I even applied for some that said 1 year exerience and on my application how much I wanted the job in a one liner. I got hired by one of them because they let me due 2 live files. Just keep your eyes open; it only took me 2 weeks to get a job because I applied to lots of places.
GOOD LUCK!
Apply to everything! sm
I applied to everything wanting two years or under, unless the ad specifically stated "no newbies". The more you apply to the more companies will give you a chance. Once they send you a test that is where you can shine and get hired. A newbie can get hired..you just have to have the skills and persistence. Good luck!!!
must have 2 yrs to apply with MQ
nm
Don't apply if you don't want it.
x
yes, you can still apply
Spheris and Career Step have a partnership where you can start out at a higher than entry level position; however, you can still apply for a full-time job regardless of where you received your training. GOOD LUCK!!!
Apply anyway.
I am a new MT and I recently applied at my local hospital. I had an interview/test this past week. Even though they stated experience required, they are willing to consider new MTs if they don't get enough qualified candidates.
Apply, apply , apply everywhere and anywhere - sm,
you can that is my advice. It took me about 2 months to land a job 6 years ago, I applied my butt off too. I also made cold calls to local companies and landed a very small PT job that way (my first job), then 2 others on-line shortly followed, all were PT so I worked all 3, gave me very valuable experience in a very short amount of time. Just keep plugging away, determination is a big part of landing that first job. Do not take any job that you have to pay for either (other than leasing a computer), lots of scams out there. Good luck.
I wish I could apply
I am looking for pretty much the same thing. I just completed my course work for my degree and now am looking for work, but with no experience other than school and my externship it almost seems hopeless. I have visited over 60 sites and either applied, submitted resume, or been kicked out because I do not have the desired amount of experience. I am trying to be patient but I really need to start working. My ideal is to work from home, because my husband works a lot of weird hours and my son is on 18-months-old, but I have even started applying in my local area. If you know of anywhere I could look, or any tips that I could try I would appreciate it.

OOhhhh - they have basket making classes? Too bad they don't offer a class on maturity.
**
Accredited basically means they offer financial aid. Did you mean AAMT-Approved?
If it's an AAMT-approved school, you won't have a problem. Schools that provide financial aid are required to be accredited. That means their financial records are reviewed to make sure the government's money is being handled right. They aren't evaluating the value of the course or qualifications of the course to teach medical transcription.
Read - think i can tell you where to apply.SM
Hi - Go and apply at RIUnlimited - they hire new people - they do pay for spaces - they will pay you 6 cents a line which is low but it is a good place to start - i started there when i got out of school - they will hire you - Good Luck to you!
That's my point
Do you think that Donald Trump or Bill Gates gave up and stopped trying after someone said "you need two year minimum experience"
The answer is NO!! And look where they are today.
I am sick to death of MTSO saying they won't hire someone becuase they don't have the minimum experience.
I think that all anyone is asking is that you give the Newbie's a chance to show them what they can do.
I know plenty of people with experience in the MT field who might as well quit and go flip burgers!!
I say stop bashing the Newbies and give them a chance!!
And that's EXACTLY the point!
It would make your toes curl if you could see what kind of work so many of these so-called schools are provided these gals with. I get interns every week who say "I have learned more from you in the last month than I did the whole time I was in school..." and that includes interns from a wide variety of schools. It's a shame that that's the way it is, but I assure you there is most definitely a need for mentoring programs and I don't see any chance of that changing in the near future! As for scams, we have had multiple graduates of the AIM Program hired on as employees...and in fact all but maybe 1% are working as MTs now (and the few I know who aren't have chosen different career paths.) Talk to some of my former and current mentors....or some of the MTSOs I have been working with for the last 20+ years. I think you will find that we are very much legit and very much have the best interest of the interns in mind. Believe me, I could make a lot more money doing something besides mentoring...I do this because this is what I love to do and because I see a real NEED for the services we offer.
My point is you need to get over yourself.
This person starting the thread has a right to try any career she wants without you badgering and making her feel like she has not a grasp of the English language in your know-it-all posts! No one is perfect including you! We all live and learn. We have all done our time! Get over yourself already, geez!
My point exactly!
If you've graduated from a lousy school and can't get employment, it's better to pay 100$ for experience than 1500$ to start all over from scratch.
lol, point taken
Really, if someone were to judge my skills based on that; it would not be good. :) Anyhow, I am doing all I can to get into this business. Persistence has to pay off sometime. Every "no" I hear, brings me that much closer to the sweet sound of "yes, come work with us." :)
Look at the job seeker's board..apply everywhere
Regardless of what it says for experience, request to test for them. If you are good and pass the test, you may be given an opportunity. This is what I did 4 years ago. I got the job as an IC, and then not too longer after added another, and then another. I just kept replying to job ads and requesting to test. I passed the tests and was offered the jobs. Most of the time, I wasn't even asked about my experience. The proof is in the pudding. If you can do good work, are reliable, and are flexible in when you're willing to work, you can find something. You just need to get out there and start replying to ads.
Apply everywhere. All they can do is say "yes" or "no".
!
Apply for clinic positions & then ask if any GE/GI is available. Otherwise, you get hit with a

Hope this helps.
Look online and apply daily! sm...
Looking for MT job postings online is probably the quickest way to find out who is hiring. Most local newspapers are also now online. Don't forget about networking with your graduate peers!
I think timing plays a huge role in getting that first MT job. Find out who is hiring and apply on a daily basis! Job hunting is a full-time job that pays off in a huge way!
good point
Knowing that pay=production can be a great motivator, especially if you are working for a company that provides consistent work flow and good HR relations.
Thanks for your input.
Good point!
Peggy, what excellent advice! I had not heard it put that way, and after thinking about it, I know you're right! thanks for opening my eyes to think "bigger".... better to be excellent, and more "employable", than to be somewhat limiting. I do plan to study in such a way as to be excellent! That's just the way I'm "built"! :) thanks again for your post.... -Anne (amh) :)
Good point..lol

GOOD POINT
I'm glad that this was brought up. I have often wondered myself. What encourages me is that there is always something new to learn. Even the MTs who have been in this for years admits it themselves.
I am still a newbie but being an IC helps a lot in learning different areas in this field. I am thankful that my contact "feeds" me work from a new field gradually when she thinks that I am already catching on with the one she gave me prior. I say "catching on" because I can get comfortable with surgery and here comes a new case with totally different words that I need to research on.
Just like a former professor of mine said - "the more you know, the more you realize that there is still much to learn."
you are all missing the point!
MANY companies hire even before graduation if you went to a good school and are able to pass their employment test.
And your point would be? He did exceptionally well for
himself. Doesn't mean everybody could do it. Everybody can't transition from nursing to MT, but some can.
Point proven again.
Ow! Now I fell off my chair laughing.
Slowly for all following along. If you can't find a job even with training, just being a nurse will be worse.
OK. I think everyone has it now. For anyone who doesn't, that's fine. I only want to convince those who aren't an MT yet. Don't care about people already working so unbunch the old undies.
Just a minor point
Speaking only for myself, I do a load of ESL dictators. It is almost a sub-specialty of mine. However, and I'm guessing a lot of us ol' timers can say this, I like to get dictators that are EFL now and then. And the person that has been doing transcription for five years might have an easier time with them, too (as opposed to my 25+ years). But if they feed all the good and easy stuff to the newbies, the rest of us won't get that break from Gregor Svaslkdfjkjahsdfkjhsadfov or Mohit Chenaidehlimumbai. Considering there usually is not that much difference in pay scales between newbs and the transcription elders, it doesn't seem right to skim off the cream for the newbs. Maybe you should try doing doctors' offices and then you can select which docs you want (although also keep in mind that there are some native sons who are much harder to type than most of the ESL guys).
I understand your point (sm)
I just do not agree with you in this case. I believe this board is a place where people come to relax. Do you ever allow your English language skills to slide when you IM your friends? I do. I see this board in a similar way. It is definitely not a place to judge a person's English language skills. Also, if you are not aware of this fact, MTs are not required to have a degree in English (or any degree, for that matter). You probably would prefer that, but we do not make enough money to require a degree. You can insist on agruing if you'd like, but I will agree to disagree with you in this case. This conversation benefits no one at this point.
Good point
I would be weary, save for the fact this individual is sending me all the software I need for free. They are also paying for the software I don't have that I need. I figure if they are willing to spend a good amount of money to get me the software required before I have even started, than there must be something to it.
Of course, I will keep my eyes and ears open.
Oh, and the original point, which you
obviously missed, was that you don't have to go to one of the Big 3 schools to get into MTing.
