hate to tell you but yes I most certainly am an MTSO

as attested to by my corporate annual report to the Secretary of State, my notice of acceptance of an S-corporation by the Internal Revenue Service, my certificates of shares of the corporation, my quarterly payments to the Department of Employment Security for my employees and my portofolio in a corporate 401K. The OP said "sensitive information" which would hardly constitute your name and address which people even write down on blank pieces of paper at the supermarket to try to win a Caribbean cruise at the supermarket. And if I were you, little Miss Cop of the Internet, I would keep my fancy little fingers off this board. According to your own logic, how easy would it be for a hacker to get ahold of YOUR IP address and start stalking YOU down? The OP probably even has a site on MySpace for cryin' out loud. So go ahead and dispense your advice, i.e. panic, via the MTSTARS board. I'm sure that since you found this site it makes you an expert in all matters. LOL.

I hate to tell you this....
But most people call them "Trans Scam." They'll scam you out of money, and you never seem to get "good enough" to make money from them. Get out of there now!!!!!!! Do a search here and on other chat boards to see what people have said about them.
You best bet is to just keep applying and testing with other companies. Eventually you'll find something. Good luck!
I hate to admit it, but ...
I figure if he forgot that he dictated it, he won't notice if I don't type it! So I start right where he starts over again.
Hate to be a downer, but ...
you're only going to learn what is taught in that course, and you have no idea of the things you're NOT going to learn. Sure it seems like you are learning a lot since you are starting at the beginning.
You will need to spend all the time you can on the internet, reading and learning more about everything that you learn in the course. There is a very good reason that the AHP course does not get good reviews here - or anywhere.
I realize you have spent money and have to do the best you can with what you've got, but hopefully someone who is still trying to decide upon a school will take note and make things easier for themselves.
hate-schmate - I think you exaggerate.
nobody "hates" the big three. What we do hate is the ridiculous constant sales pitch going on here, on a board that is supposed to help new MT's but obviously has turned into a place to grab one more potential client. All that gets posted here is "go to the Big Three and you will get a job without even testing"-- then when someone else posts to the contrare, that poster is attacked, ridiculed and dismissed as having unverifiable information. Nobody hates.
We don't hate our jobs. There's no money in it
anymore now that the corporations have taken us over & are offshoring our jobs. This field used to pay really well, but those days are over & it can be difficult to make minimum wage, especially on VR. Many MTs are trying to re-train to find other careers so they can actually make a living.
Sorry for mistakes...I HATE no preview option here. :( nm
x
I hate to burst your bubble, but some people can do it.
Maybe you can't, but I did. I took my knowledge of medical terminology that I learned as a nurse, combined that with good typing skills, was tutored by some exceptional seasoned transcriptionists, and became a quality MT myself.
I hate it when husbands INSIST on things ...
when they don't know what they're talking about!
Way too many people drop out of MT courses, the schools are smart enough to get all the money up front.
why take all your advice from people who hate their career
It is true that there are a lot of people on this website that have had enough of their career and want to discourage everyone from being an MT. You have to remember that all the negative stuff people say about being an MT come from people who have been doing it for so long they are burned out. You also should consider the opinions of people who still love their job.
While it is true that it isn't easy to get started as an MT, it can be a worthwhile career. These experienced people just want to make sure you understand it isn't easy but it also isn't impossible. Check it out for yourself, research the schools, and make your own decision. Now that you know what you have ahead, you can make a more educated choice. Good luck.
Honey, I hate to burst your bubble, but
poor sound quality and bad dictators are reality in the real world of transcription, always has been and always will be. If you cannot do these dictations, you will not be able to pass hiriing tests, much less be able to keep a job. If the schools give out diplomas without assuring these people are ready for this type of work, then I feel very sorry for these students who spend a lot of money to take their course.
umm...I hate to tell you this...but further Labor Board stats show wages in 2004
at $29,530. They were $23,500 in 1997. So we've gained $6000/yr in 10 years? Woohoo- you're right-- Medical Transcription must not be in trouble.
"Compensation varies not only among regions of the country, but among types of employers as well. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical transcriptionists earned an average salary of $29,530 in 2004. The average hourly wage was $14.20."
"Medical transcriptionists averaged about $ 23,500 in 1997 woking in hospitals, and about $ 22,600 working in offices and clinics of medical doctors."
MTSO?
Please excuse my ignorance, but what is MTSO? (obviously, I'm a newbie)
MTSO
Forgive me for being so ignorant of the abbreviations, but what does MTSO stand for?
Thanks.
MTSO
I know what it stands for. I've read the posts about MTSO's. But I can't find a straight forward answer. I've read that for newbies, a good bet for getting a job is with/thru an MTSO. I've googled it but no good info pops up. Where in the world do I find an MTSO?
So who is your MTSO
I have a friend that went to Allied, having trouble now finding work. Who is your MTSO??
There used to be a lot of $$ in being an MTSO, not
anymore. When you are competing with single-digit line rates from off-shore companies you can no longer charge 18 cpl. In most cases it isn't corporate greed, but trying to be stay afloat. Medical expenses are through the roof and everyone is looking for a way to cut expenses and MT is one of them.
I agree that companies that went offshore long ago did it for greed, but now it is mostly for survival.
People go into this business lured by working at home and making $40,000/year. They don't investigate to see how realistic that is. They go to one of the cheaper schools because the better schools are too expensive, yet the cheaper schools are pretty worthless and don't equip you to work as an MT in the real world. If potential MTs would do their research on the front-end they wouldn't go into this field to start with.
Meaning of MTSO
Could someone tell me what MTSO stands for? May be a dumb question, but I wont know if I don't ask.
Thanks
MTSO - What are you afraid of?
,
As an MTSO owner.....
I will just let you know that in response to an add I ran for 2 MT positions, I received 50+ very good, qualified MT resumes...that is why no one will hire a newbie! I actually have 3 newbies that I am working with now on a small clinic account that I have. I will not put a newbie on an acute care facility due to the amount of QA that goes into that, but I will start them on my small clinic note facility to begin with and let them work up to the QA. That is my position on this subject...there are too few jobs for too many qualified experienced MTs out there, and there is a deficiency of work due to Nationals outsourcing work overseas..that's that, IMHO.
Bet MTSO is tickled, also, to get an MT for 5 cpl.
x
Can somebody tell me how to find an MTSO?
I've tried google, but MTSO seems to be a common acronym for lots of things. Is there some key term I could search for that would point me toward potentially hiring MTSOs?
Thanks.
National MTSO
I really have no experience with a national MTSO, but I think it depends on where the MTSO is based. So, if the MTSO is based in the US, you would be paid dollars, and if it is based in the UK, you might be paid in EURO, and so forth and so on. However, while checking around on the net, I found a company based in the Philippines. You might want to check them out, the web address is, www.peoplesupport.com. I don't know what their money would translte to US currency, but it may be easier for you.
how to find an MTSO
Thanks. I know what MTSO stands for but I was having a hard time finding an MTSO in my area. I have noticed a lot of people say that a newbie is better off working for an MTSO to gain experience. But when I search for MTSO I get nothing. If anyone reading this works for or has worked for an MTSO, can you please tell me how you found them. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
I got my own accounts & started an MTSO.
nm
After some experience working for another MTSO...
I registered a dba with my city, marketed like crazy, and got my own accounts and my own subs working for me.
Besides a great MT education, the thing that has helped the most is having a Stanford MBA business consultant in my corner. I couldn't have done this so quickly without his advice and coaching. Luckily, he works cheap since he's my SO!
You didn't say if you are an MTSO or IC or employee or what. (nm)
nm
MTSO's can be extremely busy...sm
Not only can they be overwhelmed with trying to handle the new work load, but they have to sort through resumes, interview and hire someone, plus paperwork. So if they do have more work, this just adds to the workload. I dread bringing on someone new because it is such a huge amount of work - that takes away from getting the work at hand done in a timely fashion. So patience is good, I'm sure they know you are there, but maybe just keeping their head above water...
I think the MTSO is saying that she has knowledge based
having had MTs who were fakes and some who were not, and is now able to discern which is which. I don't think he/she was saying any more, any less.
I didn't see YOUR name on this message, MTSO!
nm
MTSO - Are you going to answer quick on this
/
So, MTSO, are you going to address the issues
Why are you taking the money?
Except it's not a huge list of MTSO's. It's...
a site where you can post your own business if you want. Most of the postings are solitary MT's, just like you and me.
work for MTSO as an IC - days
nm
I think the MTSO probably does give equal chances
Accepts the people who demonstrate a good understanding of the importance of use of proper grammar and rejects those who don't. She probably feels sorry for those who do not understand this and appreciates those who do.
She didn't get where she is by starting out with a lack of common sense. That's something you have or you don't. No gray area or inequality about that issue as I see it.
I was a newbie once too. We are were.
AND for professional MTSO's! But post above states otherwise. nm
X
I was not the one who wrote that above post signed by MTSO. I said what I had to say. sm
Anyone can contact me via email from my first post if they would like and I will answer whatever they ask. I am choosing not to do this song and dance on this board anymore. After I posted what I had to say, someone posted that I wasnt answering questions and then someone posted at the same time that if I were a professional I wouldnt be on here so I am ridiculed either way. It takes up too much of my time and energy to just keep defending myself. Obviously there is another MTSO that feels as I do and that is why they posted that.
I think what the MTSO has and hasn't said speaks volumes - sm
The fact that she answers questions only in part when she had the opportunity to clear the air about everything should tell you something...
Good post below, by the way. Good advice to heed.
I sincerely hope that you do not own/manage an MTSO.
If you treated employees with as little respect as you do others on this board, I don't think you would have many employees for long. You have been condescending and rude. My only point in this whole thread has been that you can go from nursing to MT with some hands-on training. I have never said that formal training wasn't helpful, it's just not always necessary. Have a wonderful day!
Did the MTSO, who is saintly for hiring newbies,
x
MTSO is basically medical transcription
Check Job Seeker's Board. Also you can do a search on google. MTSO just means medical transcription service owner. That's all that means. MTSO could be a national (large), midsize, or small (some independent contractors will sub work out).
Hmmm. I think this MTSO's opinion would "carry weight"...
If the poster was NOT a graduate of one of those two schools.
I work for a small MTSO. They aren't hiring - sm
I've been with them for years, and they still have the same group of 10-12 MTs. Very steady, but they rarely hire new people.
Have you tried local clinics or small MTSO's in your area?
That's how I got my first break. Good luck.
Have you tried local hospitals, doctors, small MTSO's
That's how I started out working for a very small local MTSO, then I went on to become an employee of a small local nephrology group where I still am today with great pay and benefits. I had no experience when I stated but the small MTSO decided to give me a chance. Don't give up.
Who said I HATE this field? I LOVE this field but
also see the changes coming down the pike. Also feel it is not fair to withhold or misrepresent that part of the equation to someone who is considering entering MT or just starting out. Knowledge is power. It would take years for a new MT to have the kind of insight into this field that a 20+ year experience lends. Believe me, I would be only too happy to keep running my MTSO, making $75,000+ year while working 20 hours a week, paying my MT's well, but it's not going to happen. Try reading "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman if you want a perspective of what's going to happen to not only MT work but a lot of great white collar jobs. India and the rest of the world are breathing down our necks and in the next decade will be serious competitors for American jobs. There will be no "american" jobs - we will be competing against the rest of the world for jobs.
Friedman states: "The convergence of 'flatteners' has created a whole new platform. It is a global, Web-enabled platform for multiple forms of collaboration. This platform enables individuals, groups, companies and universities anywhere in the world to collaborate...this platform operates without regard to geography, distance, time, and, in the near future, even language. Going forward, this platform is going to be at the center of everything...wealth and power will flow to those who get these basic things right...the infrastructure to connect with the platform and the education to get more of their people working on the platform.
Please wake up and look beyond our box.
With all due respect, that is simply BS. Please prove to me that MTSO will waive experience
depending on which school you went to. Please share your information because as an MTSO I have never done this and know of no other services that do this. What a disservice to newbies to make this statement.
Scroll down just a little & you'll see "This is a huge list of MTSO's"
posted by Misha. I think this is what you're talking about.
Just do it. I work for a small MTSO and recently asked for myself - and got what I asked for. nm
xx
Just be sure not to pay for work. There is an MTSO below who apparently charges to work for them (sm
It might be tempting when you're getting desperate for work to pay someone so you can work for them, but don't do it. You can buy software and a foot pedal on your own, so don't let them fool you. If you are approached via e-mail from this site by an MTSO saying they have work for you, please read the posts below before making any decisions.
Why not try local MTSO's or local doctors' offices
That's how I started out when I first became an MT. I found a very small local MTSO who gave me a chance and now I work for a local company and have been there for two years. It might be worth it to take a look. I basically trained at the MTSO's office for about a month so there was no testing involved at all. Just learning along the way. Good luck whatever you decide.
