I work there and twice they shorted my pay and my check didn't even come this time. They don't have direct deposit, just one very hateful payroll clerk who acts like it just kills her to answer a question.

Appy anywhere and everywhere. There are a lot of companies who say they require at least 2 years experience, but you would be surprised at how many will give someone who has just graduated a chance. If you pass their test they will hire you, 2 years or not. I know from experience. I graduated last year and I applied to every ad that had a 2 year minimum, before I graduated. I got hired 1 week before I graduated, and I have been working ever since. Good Luck!

You can't give up hope if this is the field you want to work in. I had been doing my job for 17 years and needed something new. I did a lot of research and liked the opportunites that being an MT provided. I'm sure it would not be for everybody, but I love what I do and have great docs to transcribe for. Plus, perhaps more important, it is an ongoing learning process. I like to stay challenged and this job certainly does that. Good luck to you!!

I am sorry they are attacking you too. I too got a "tip" about my grammar. I misspelled on word. I would normally spellcheck everything I post unfortunately this forum doesn't offer that option. I worked for a few year with any MT training. I had gone to premed school. I have moved and haven't found a local company yet, I have to say for a new MT that is the way to go. Don't get too down on yourself.

in your pursuit in this. Just a thought but are there any physical therapy groups in your area? I have a private account where the physical therapists dictate on microcasette tapes, I pickup, type them on my machine at home and print them on their letterhead and sticky paper and then return them and pick up the next batch. PT is not really hard and just added their terms to my Expander and even made my own templates. Charge enough (like 10-11 centes a line) but you can deduct your mileage and supplies.

It's tough getting a job even with experience. I have over 10 years experience but unfortunately it's not recent. I took time off to raise my kids and wanted to get back into the fiel but found it difficult to even have the opportunity to test. I enrolled in M-Tec and it has been well worth the investment. make sure this is the field you want to work. It is not all the "schools" say it will be, unfortunately. If you have had NO prior medical experience, all the schools will do is give you a basic course. They will not tell you that when you apply for a job you will be starting out at 7 to 8 cents per line (and that is being generous). You will be assigned accounts where you may have to spend 30 min per report before you learn it thereby reducing your pay to less than minimum wage. Just make sure that this is what you WANT to do.. and do not believe anyone who tells you that this is GREAT money and a GREAT job. I know, I've been doing this for many years and over the years have lost money because of corporate b.s.

I am taking the longer route because I don't have any other experience in the med field (nursing, etc.) I figured that a bit more upfront (a budget breaker for me too) would pay off in the long run with me able to get up to speed in the real transcription world faster, thus making more money sooner. That's why I chose to go with the longer program :)

I just got hired on. It seems like it took them about a week to get back with me on the transcription part, another week or so to get back with me on the written part, and another week or so to do the online interview. I am not sure if they are still hiring or not, but usually if you don't pass you hear back pretty quickly (or so I have found)! :) Good luck! I am pretty excited to start, I train on Wednesday!

Good luck finding a job. I took a course that was not through one of the top 3 schools and finally found a job at home, online, and I got ripped off after working there for 8 months as their checks started bouncing. Needless to say I could not find another job because I did not have enough experience and I did not take the right course. I was forced to go back to work in the field that I was in before I quit to work at home. You have to be careful. I wasted thousands of dollars and really got nowhere. If it looks too good to be true, it is.

I wish I could get paid this way again
When I first started out all I had to do was type the document, open up the information and get my line count, so much easier, even a return was a line. I had been able to keep it that way up until now where it is a 65 character line, with spaces at least though. I think I would definitely make more money with just plain old straight lines.

David, I hope you're not saying that you PAID for a course wherein the teachers or moderators do not reply to your questions by email.
It might be time to go further up the food chain at that school.
Not getting paid well at first?
If you choose the right school, you won't have to be in the position of "probably not gettin paid well at first." You won't have to "work your way up," either.
Doesn't it make more sense to choose a reputable school with a history of placing students directly into decent jobs at regular pay rates?
Going with a crummy school because it's cheaper . . . or being blinded because it's more expensive . . . makes no sense. If you can't work at all, or you have to take a job at low pay just to get your foot in the door, you've wasted your time in the program and you are continuing to waste it.
I don't know what to think about people who encourage others to do the same.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out why students continue to ask about and enroll in these horrible "schools." Isn't the massive amount of negative information about them enough to steer you away?
I think getting paid by the minute might be better because
lots of times you get the docs who will carry on a conversation in the middle of the dictation, or who will lay the phone down to thumb through the chart, though I have no personal experience with being paid this way.
Man you got ripped if you paid that much to get an
AA degree. Shouldn't have cost you more than $2,000.00 and even though is a stretch.

best bet is get a job locally that pays hourly. you make more money that way. in 1976, i made $9/hr. now i make $17/hr. when i edit, i make $23/hr (boston)

MedLine has paid internships
after going through their program and you are qualified to work on real dictation jobs because the school is owned by a med. trans. company. It is an excellent school, I am going to it, after wasting money on TRSI's school which was horrible. They called their advanced transcription "internship" which wasn't an internship at all, and no one answered my questions or helped me and I ended up leaving there knowing nothing. Anyway see if Medline can answer your questions.
Better paid healthcare position to MT here...big adjustment, but it's...
entirely worth it. The lower pay (at least for a while) versus the stress you feel as an RN - only you can decide, but in the long run I'll go with MT any day.
Also, if I were you, I would go with M-Tec rather than CS. It is a much more comprehensive program, and you will be much more prepared. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but you will have many, many job offers when you graduate and can pick what suits you best. 
I paid medical insurance claims
for about 17 years, so while this did help me tremendously with the terminology, etc., I don't think there is any way you can do this without the proper training. I knew a lot about the medical field, but it still doesn't compare to what you learn when schooling to be an MT
School gets paid for intern work
I now know they are paid for each report I do, supposedly to help cover the cost of "interning" students. The client company benefits by having reports already proofed that do not have to go through their QA and the school gets paid. I have started sending out resumes and taking online tests. Hopefully, I will get a paying position soon.
That's a first for me. I've never heard of an IC being paid hourly.
I wonder if that breaks any laws about ICs? I'm not an expert at all on IC laws, but I wouldn't be surprised if being paid hourly doesn't make you an employee. You might want to post that question in the subject line on the main board.

for the reasons you mentioned. On a couple of occasions, the recording "continued" for about 15 to 20 minutes after the dictation was done, and because I had to continue to listen, I got PAID for those minutes!

I see there is a fee for this program. If one has to pay a fee, and do work without pay, it doesn't sound like such a great deal for the newbie.

This is not a matter of being the grammar police, but I have to be honest in saying that your grammar skills are lacking to some degree. Many misuses of proper grammar in your post. As a former MTSO, I would be somewhat reluctant to hire you in a field that relies heavily on a firm grasp on command of the English language. Too many mistakes in my opinion. I really do not mean this to be vicious, but would like the industry to realize that there are too many in this profession who do not qualify to do this job. Our industry is in too much danger at present, and those who lack the basics of grammar before even beginning to tackle the more complicated aspect of the medical terminology and knowledge, are contributing to the problem.

I just started looking for work too. Have you had any luck yet? I was just looking at the Freedom Type website. Have you heard anything about them? Also, have you tried ETrans Plus they will let you test no matter what so you have a chance to prove your skills before they decide. Good luck. =0)

I graduted last January, and still have no job in transcription. I have tried local offices as well as online companies. Nothing is working out for me. No one wants new grads right now. I guess that they can be extra picky in this economy. All I know is that my school has told me I will have a hard time finding work if I go more than six months without working in transcription. Well, that time is not so far away now. I feel like my school fibbed a bit, acting like this career was so "in demand" and keeping me thinking I would find work quickly. I'm starting to think I wasted my time and money on getting that certificate. I'm still trying, though, sending out resumes every week and usually hearing nothing, and nothing good when I do hear from a company.
The problem with affiliates promoting the school is they get PAID to go it.
If you file jointly it doesn't matter who paid for them, it all comes
from the same pot anyway.
Nevermind...not paid. In fact, website says they charge
a $99 enrollment fee. That means this company is getting paid for work that is done for free by newbie MTs. Yikes!
If school is AHDI-approved, there are paid apprenticeship programs available.
