Maybe you can find a mentor who can help you out. It is very hard to get into this field. It would be beneficial if you could find someone to QA your work for you.

59 hours doesn't come close to teaching
you even the basics.  You could apply to do only ophthalmology.  Typing speed isn't that important, but 95% accuracy isn't good enough for most companies.  It might be enough to pass their test, but QA usually requires 98+%.  You might want to look into a menitoring program.
Regardless of audio quality, the fact that she came as close as she did
to what it actually was yet couldn't get it shows that she has no idea what a salpingo-oophorectomy IS. Not to mention the other info she gave and the type of report that it is.
are you joking? what kind of QA is even remotely close to that post?
I have been MTing for 15+ years and have never received a QA like that. You are a little bold in suggesting someone cannot make it as an MT if they can't take criticism. I hate criticism, and I have been MTing for many years. That post above was rude, suggesting that newer MT's expect to make $60,000 and bounce their babies on their knees while tapping the keyboard. What a joke. If you are experienced, you should take pause and remember what it was like. Did people expect that from you? Nobody expected that from me when I first started out, nor did they make such harsh suggestions.
What do you consider a good living?

I'm thinking of work from my house instead of the office, changing careers.

    a good living
Sounds like you are quite successful. Please share with me what is involved in actually earning this level of income. Have you been at it for a long time? How many hours/week do you work? Thanks. I'm strongly considering MT but I hear such variables on the pay.
How do people make a living in ....

this business?  I'm new and realize how lucky I am to have a MT position in which I can work from home.  I was hired by a MTSO who needed people on a new account she was getting.  Now I am not needed on the account because it's just not rolling in all the work it was suppose to (maybe that is how is going to be or maybe just cause of the holidays). She continues to give me as much work as she possibly can and is constantly stating how amazed she is by my ability to catch on quick to the new doctors she throws at me.  However, I am lucky to make $100 every two weeks.  I am looking for a second MT job.  Does anyone have any suggestions? I am wonder if even a second job is going to bring in enough money though.  I actually just have to bring in around $500 (rent because my husband can pay everything else) but of course to be financially comfortable I would like to bring in more.  Is it worth getting a second job or will I eventually have to get a third?  I really want to stay working as an IC for the MTSO because she is so nice and it lets me be more flexible than a national would.  Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

why do you think living is Belgium is that expensive?
(disregarding their fame to being the diamond wholesale capital of Europe?)  Shoot, if my family can make a living there, why not you or I?  Euros are worth more than US dollars anymore.
Okay, but most people have a hard time living
in a different state from their family, let alone another country.
Yes, and these were people trying to make an HONEST living
    nm
That is an ignorant statment...I am living proof!! -sm
It must ruffle your feathers to think someone could teach themselves your trade, but unfortunately I have to say you are WAY off base there...speaking as a nurse and self-taught MT with impeccable work, thank you very much.
    Where do you live?
Just wondering where you live because a hospital that I applied at is looking for someone.
I don't live where the hospital is looking - sm
I actually have two hospitals to recruit for - one in NY and one in Maryland. I will have another soon in Minnesota after I fly up there on Wednesday to find out their needs and look at the surrounding area. These would be for people wanting to relocate. Relocation would be paid.
What state do you live in??
    nm
where the heck do you live?
Are you an RN? Even in podunk the salary for an RN is nearly 30 an hour, and the traveling nurses get more plus paid rent and utilities.
    I don't mind saying where I live.
I live in Granbury, TX. If thats nowhere near you then they probably wouldn't even bother w/ me, right? If you live around here, let me know, if not then let me know too. Thanks for helping!!!!!
    Words to live by...
Thanks so much for the info!!!! I love discovering how to make my life "easier" and to have someone give so freely of the knowledge they have obtained over years of experience. It is very helpful. Thank you!!!!
It does matter where you live
as well as all the other things mentioned in other posts. That said, Meg is obviously new to the profession and does not understand that by charging 6 cpl directly to the doctors offices you/she/whoever would be doing all MTs a disservice and contributing to the decline of our compensation. I am on the other side of the country, but the rates here are typically charged by the gross line at about 12-14 cpl, which translates to a couple of cents higher for 65-character lines. Even if you are working for a service 6 cpl is low, although admittedly not much lower than what is average these days, but take into consideration that you are not having to fight to attain and keep accounts, and all that goes with that end of it, and are doing only the transcribing and what goes into producing the actual reports. Services are charging hospitals even more than the rates I mentioned above, to the tune of about 21-23 cpl. (which also varies and is based on several factors).
Vanessa - noticed you live in NC....can I ask where, as I do and might be able to help nm

any new graduates live in Orange County California.
From what I gather, and remember as I was in your shoes 15 years ago, to get a job is tough.  Are new graduates interested in working in externship program and a more experienced transcriptionist's residence for maybe 6-7 cents per line???  I have been pondering this and would appreciate any feedback.
20$ an hour?!!! I couldn't make this as a nurse where I live! You are VERY blessed! nm

You'll need to work 2 jobs at home to be able to live on MT. Or have a spouse + your income. Best
