I type between 60-70 wpm depending on the copy difficulty. I do clinic notes (yep I know they are easier) and get about 150-200 lph, and have been at this for about 3.5 mos now. I was creeping up some more, but I got switched to a different account and am working on building up expansions and templates for that now. Without autocorrect I would be quite slow. Make sure what you create is instinctual for you or follows a system, and don't create too many at once, or you may forget them. Good luck.

AutoCorrect

Hey there,

I used to use Smartype as my former company provided it but it does not work properly with Word 2003. What I do is I use the AutoCorrect feature that comes with Word. It will take some time to input your own but it works fine. Here's some quick instructions:

Click Tools>AutoCorrectOptions (or Alt-T, A on keyboard if you are a mouse hater like me).

Select AutoCorrect tab. In Replace box type your abbreviation or shorthand. In the With box type the expanded form. For example for coronary artery disease, I put cade in the replace box. Then click OK. Next time you need to type this, just type cade and hit spacebar and it will expand for you. Bear in mind that you need to be careful of what you put there in case some hospital down the line doesn't want you to expand slang like bicarb for bicarbonate so my expansion for that is bicarbx. Hope this helps!

autocorrect vs autotext vs macros

Would like opinions on why people use one over the other. Just got into this business and i'm mostly using autotext. I have heard a lot of talk about macros but that they are hard (or is it time consuming) to do.

One main problem with AutoCorrect is that the normal.dot and .acl files
If you're going to rely on AutoCorrect as your Expander utility, make sure you back up your normal.dot and .acl files regularly. If the files become corrupt (and with Word it's usually just a matter of time), you will lose all your AutoCorrect and AutoText entries, macros, and some other customizations.
