Independent
You can send mass mailing out to all docs in your area just letting them know you are willing and able to work as regular or to fill in for their regular transcriptionists when needed which is how I got my start at .10/line as a very very newbie and now make .15/line and transcribing independently for three docs. No benefits but that's ok - love the freedom of being my own boss. Initially sent out 75 letters - got three responses which was good enough. Good luck to you!!!!
Independent contractors
Be wary of independent contractors. Some of these job offers may be nothing more than scams. They offer a certain wage per line, send you a HIPPA agreement to sign, charge you for free downloadable software, and then you never hear from them again. Finding work as a "newbie" can sometimes be even harder than you imagined.
Sorry, that should say as an Independent Contractor (nm)

Being an independent guarantees...
…really nothing that I see so far. I have accepted a job as an independent and guess what? They asked what hours and which days I would be willing to work for them. I told them the hrs and days and because I really wanted, really wanted to work for this particular place, it was OK for me. Now I know lots will say well you should be their employee. I do not need the benefits, hubby carries those and I, knowing what work this particular place had, was more than willing to go along with their needs. That is the part of being a transcriptionist. I fit into what they need, not whaas I wanted. This person sounds like they have a lot of growing up to do.....
Any independent MTs using microcassettes ?
Having a problem with one of my docs tapes. One report will be fine and then the volume gets really loud and muffled sounding....so muffled that it's hard to determine lab values accurately. He's ready to ditch the microcassette and go digital. I have no clue what I would need to transcribe digital. Right now I'm using a Sony microcassette transcribing unit. Any suggestions ?? Thanks !!
re: independent studier
I am an M-Tec student, and I have to add that I am a very independent person; I don't ask very many questions of my instructor. I pretty much do what my syllabus says, learn the material, and send in my assignments. I do, however, appreciate the fact that she is there when I do need her. She gives excellent feedback on my graded assignments as to what I missed and why I missed it. The "why" part is invaluable; I need to understand why you do this or that in order of it to stick in my head. If you're not getting that from a book and have no instructor to turn to, how will you learn? JMHO.
Independent MT study
ebay, yes, alibris, no, I will check that now, thanks :)
Independent MT study
I am training on my own at home with Medical Transcription Fundamentals By Diane Gilmore but I have no access to the answer keys to check myself. I have contacted the publisher but I think you have to be affiliated with a school to access that content. Does anyone know how I can obtain the answer keys to the book work and the dictation files provided? I am currently at a stand still because I have no idea if my transcriptions are accurate. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
independent contractor means you are sm
working for yourself and not for them. You must pay all your taxes including the other side of your SS tax called self-employment tax.
Six cents per line is a good rate for a newbie with no experience but not for an independent contractor especially having to invest in equipment. I would work for a company that made me an employee for a couple years.
Yes, you are correct. IC=Independent Contractor.

Independent Contracting questions
I am currently subcontracting with a company and I enjoy the work, but as a new transcriptionist, there isn't much of it. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences to share with how they found an independent contracting job.
I'm actually searching for something to supplement the job I have. I would like to work with one doctor if possible, but I don't know if that is possible. I'm hoping that someone had started out working with one doctor and then added on doctors when they felt their work with the first doctor was consistently good.
I am really just looking for some information and advice to figure out how to do what I have mentioned above.
Thank you,
Dara
question regarding independent contracting
Hi. I am a new MT and worked for over a year as an independent contractor for an MT transcription company. I would like to know what form do I need from them that is required in filing for my income tax return? Thank you in advance for the info.
