You don't know what you don't know

Until you are out in the working MT world or trying to pass tons of tests, you won't know what you don't know now---you do get what you pay for in an MT school.
As an Andrews grad who does QA, I've seen worked with newbie MTs from lots of different schools. I wouldn't have been allowed to finish school doing the kind of work their schools let slide by. A few are naturally quick and have a love of language. These MTs will develop into good MTs eventually, but it will take tons of mentoring and hard work---and less money for them in the process. I've seen many more, though, who just can't cut it. They think they've gotten a good education and all companies/QA are being too hard on them. Sorry, but if you're transcribing my medical record, it had better be spot-on accurate.
I'm not knocking any school or even promoting my alma mater, but if you're seriously wanting to get in this business, why not get all the education and help from a school BEFORE you attempt to get that first job? It will save frustration down the road, both for you as the newbie MT and also for the people who have to mentor you along.
