I purchased a new dell laptop about 6 months ago and was able to get it with Windows XP. I would also recommend if you go that route that you elect to have Word 2003 rather than the newer Word 2007 installed on it as it is getting very difficult to find Word 2003 anymore and it is very expensive.

You can switch Vista to XP, but then you can't switch it back to Vista is what
I understand. I've known several MTs dump Vista and they didn't have any issues.

the company I work for does not offer use of equipment. I did get my foot pedal from them though. I work on the Dictaphone ExText platform and really love it. They sent me the Dictaphone foot pedal and a really nice pair of Dictaphone headphones.

Usage of company computer?
I have done a few searches, and it seems that there are only a few companies that offer a computer for your own in-home use. I'm just curious about this. Do the majority of the companies offer their own computers and are just not saying on their websites? Do most of them charge a monthly fee for the use?...or do you mainly have to provide your own computer?

Wireless does not mean secured computer......
If you have a wireless card, you can use a public "hot spot" which is public wireless access but anyone with a wireless card can also access your computer and you will not know it.
Here's a site that may answer a few of your questions. Just remember, public places can be dangerous regardless with regards to your private information on a laptop. Try to at least set up the precautions listed below.

when I bought my computer last fall
it came with Vista. Nothing came with XP anymore but I had to have it. (Now Dell is getting smart and selling computers with XP again.) We just put a copy of XP on. We always have the option to restart and boot Vista. You don't have to dump it. This was a huge headache, though, because we had to download a bunch of other drivers for sound, video, etc., and I would recommend just getting a computer with XP. We really like our Dell computer.

99% of the companies out there do not use Vista. So either get your hands on an old one or buy a new one with it (I special ordered mine from Dell), or reformat your existing computer and get rid of the Vista. I use an Aircard which works great with every company I have tried it on so far, I would just say yeah, I have high speed....you do, it is just wireless. I had some trouble recently and the tech guys kept telling me my aircard would not work, etc. I told them I had been using it for 6 months just fine.....turns out it was a problem at their end and once they fixed it my aircard worked fine as always. Hi Tera, I know what you mean. I have been looking on and off for 2 1/2 years. One thing then another. It's the computer or not passing employment test. I haven't tried Focus yet.

Vista vs. XP
I am starting a new job, and I need to have XP for it to be compatible with the transcription platform. I am wondering, is this the case most of the time for transcription work, or are there a lot of MTs using Vista? My options at this point are either pay to have my Vista wiped off my brand new laptop and pay to have someone install XP (which may or may not function with all the bells and whistles on this thing), buy an older XP computer, use my old outdated dinosaur computer that has XP on it already, or trade my new laptop for a business class one that has preinstalled XP with the option to upgrade to vista. I don't want to do any of these, and no matter which one I choose, it will be expensive (with the exception of using my dinosaur). So, what I am wondering is this: Do most MTs have to use XP? Are there many platforms/companies which run fine on Vista? Am I wasting my time an money downgrading, or will this be something that I will need anyways? Any information on this subject is appreciated.

Unfortunately, I already tried this (took it to a place to have Vista removed and replaced with XP), and they screwed up my computer, long story...Anyways, I have been researching it for 2 days now, and this model of computer has issues with XP, because they do not make the drivers for it. I appreciate your input anyways. I guess you sort of answered my question anyways, that in general, Vista is often unacceptable for the MT world.

InfraWare works on VISTA. An ASP will continue to develop as Microsoft does if it is cutting edge technology.
HHELP! Any MAC computer students/MTs out there studying? or working?
there?? I was strongly leaning towards M-Tec for schooling, and just read you can't use a MAC computer while studying there. I can't afford to switch over to a PC right now.

inputs on buying a laptop computer to use for work
I am a newbie and looking into buying a laptop computer to use for work. I would like to know if that is okay. The reason that I wanted a laptop computer for work is because I wanted to be still working wherever I maybe even if I am not at home. Is that possible? Has anyone bought a Vista and then had the operating system changed to XP because you found out that Vista was not compatible with the MT world. Was it O.K. ? I am such an idit LOL !

Bring the computer back if you can and have them install windows XP....I have found that 99.9% of companies are non-vista compatible. Also, try to get Word 2003...most companies want that are not once again not compatible with Word 2007.

Vista versus XP
I recently started working for another company and the computer tech is EXTREMELY knowledgeable when it comes to platforms and such. I was informed that Vista is basically another version of Windows ME which, most people know, was a HORRID version of Windows and Microsoft is planning on coming out with yet another operating system early next year.
I have also done internet research and there are posts regarding the fact that you can partition your hard drive to where you can have both XP and Vista running on the computer, however, in my opinion, that is best handled by an expert and not something that anyone should attempt on their own without extensive computer knowledge.
Right now, I would say your best bet would be to try to find a computer with XP on it as far as a laptop, or if you can hold out, stick with the dinosaur for a bit longer. Also, it may help to get registry fix programs etc, many of which are free and extremely good programs and might help to optimize the older computer in terms of speed, etc.

The people I got my new computer from said that the big thing with Vista vs XP is that with Vista you need LOTS more RAM or something like that.
Our computer came with Vista pre-installed but because we got more speed and a major amount of memory and a video card with its own RAM, he was able to put XP pro on with Vista. I am not tech-savvy at all, so I was more than happy to have them do it.
Another place you might want to try is www.komando.com She ROCKS!!! She is my major source for questions etc.
If you can, use your old computer. It might be slow, but as long as it gets your job done, that's what counts. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

I don't have Vista, but usualy you need to unzip the
program first. I use winzip, don't know if Vista has something built in, but go to the help section and type in unzip files and see if that helps.

Need help opening a compressed file with Vista
I received a test from a company and it is a compressed file. I have Vista and have been unable to uncompress(unzip) the files. It says the folder is empty. I emailed the HR department and they said that they have received several test back already so they know the folder is not empty. Does anyone know how to uncompress a file with Vista?

Don't worry, before long, you ALL will be doing it for free! I mean come on, they already pay MTs like they are tomato pickers or putting soles on shoes! If you work for nothing, then 2 cents or 3 cents a line is going to sound good to you and believe me, it will come to that. I would be willing to work for free or intern for a company that would give me practical experience, especially if they would consider me for a paid position once I have gotten my feet wet. I would much rather spend 8 months doing real work than just going through a formal program if possible.

Why would a company advance you to paid status if they are able to get you to do the work for free. You should get paid for your time and knowledge. I am new also, only on my second week working, and on full QA. I am getting paid, as you should be also! My advise would be, quit now, put this 'internship' as professional experience on your resume, and begin looking for a new PAYING job!
Where you are at now they very well may never intend to advance you to paid status. I'm willing to bet the company IS getting paid for these reports that you are doing the work on.
Remember to check into any company that is offering you a job. Unfortunately there are crooked companies and people out there. Best of luck to you!

I will be graduating shortly. I understand how hard it is to get a job in this field without experience. I know that 2 years is preferred but I also figure that some is better than none. I have been doing free transcription work for free in return for a letter stating I did work for you. I will only be doing this for a short time so take advantage of this offer! Many company websites will let anybody try their test for free.
Why not try a few company website tests and see how you feel after that.
And I think the comment about mastering things was a result of another poster's mispelling of English terms such as there/their and your/you're. Some MTs tend to think the way a poster spells on an MT board says something about their mastery of the English language.

There are several free typing sites online.
goodtyping.com is one of them I know. It uses a series of typing tests to improve on quality and speed. It helped me.

The best thing for you to do is post your resume on the various free
job boards. There are companies that will hire from the resumes and don't post openings. Unless you went to one of the better schools you probably don't stand much of a chance of getting an at home position. Even if you did go to one of the better schools it may be difficult to find an at home position. There are companies that will hire newbies and pay them almost nothing, there are companies that offer mentoring programs that may or may not pay you anything and some may even cost you. There are companies that may offer you a position and then say you have to buy equipment/software from them first. These are probably not legitimate companies and you need to stay away from them.
Most companies want 2 years of experience, though there are exceptions. Your best bet would be to look through your local classifieds and see if you can find a position in a physician's office or a hospital.
