are typically under 10 lines and you can do 100 a day. I do Op notes for a hospital and can have reports that are 25 minutes long. I also have a lot of ESLs and if I have a day where I have the really bad ones or the bad American dictators I don't generate as many reports. If you are doing clinic work you would probably be able to do more reports than acute care, especially if you have the same doctors, because they you could set up macros for them. I generally do 40 reports a day, have done as few as 28, as many as 72, but that doesn't really tell anyone anything.

One person on this board constantly rips the so-called Big 3. Instead of doing that, why doesn't she bring some good facts forward about her own school. That would be more productive.
average MT can type 200 LPH...but...nm
With these new online programs, post DOS programs where we really cleaned up, that has dropped for some to between 130-175 LPH....A great MT should be able (pre online programs I do believe, my opinion only) to type nearly 2000 lines in an 8-hour period or 10-hour period. If I could do that on DOS programs, anyone could, and privately I still work on a faithful DOS program and for 10 years.
Decades of typing pre MT work helped and then 25 years of doing MT work is what makes some of us pros.

No real average. Too many factors.
Font type and size, margins, headers and footers can all affect how many lines fit on a page. How many lines I get per page for my account may differ drastically than what someone else is getting due to different formatting.
Average is 1/2 the line rate for straight transcription.
Companies say that you should be able to edit twice as fast as you can transcribe, but most VR editors I have talked to say that is rarely the case. So the 1/2 line rate hardly seems fair.

Radiology
Radiology is certainly easier than working for a hospital, doing all the specialties. Naturally it also pays less. I think it's good experience to have because you can concentrate on anatomical terms. It can help prepare an MT for doing operative reports. But you can get behind in practicing drug names and keeping up with the new drugs.
I am doing radiology right now, and I like it, but many MTs don't because most of the reports are short. I have observed that many fast typists tend to like longer reports because they seem to rack up their lines faster.
Another drawback to radiology is that many jobs are being lost to technology. Therefore, you need to be so good at it that the MDs can rarely catch an error. If they have to do a lot of editing and corrections, they might as well use VR technology.

radiology reports are usually shorter than acute care transcription, but it goes deeper into anatomy and physiology. it would be best to start with basic 4 (hp, consult, discharges, ops) to become more familiar. it takes a lot of people about 2-3 years to even be really comfortable with acute care. good luck

Radiology question
I hear that Radiology is very hard, very specialized. Is this true? If so, why? If so, should a Radiology MT get a higher rate of pay?
MEDITECH for Radiology
I've searched the boards and don't see any real recent posts regarding Meditech. I am starting a new radiology account which uses Meditech. All I know is that I WILL NOT be using the Meditech program that uses Word. Does that mean it is DOS-based? Is that what MAGIC is? Are they other Meditech programs that use something other than Word or DOS? What are your average lines per day? I hear a lot of people copy/paste from Word into the system.. does that work for all Meditech programs? I would REALLY appreciate some info about this platform and people's average lines on it. Thanks so much.

Radiology experience
I just finished a home study medical transcription course that did not have any radiology reports in the practice dictation, but it did have all acute care. I am just wondering if this course did not give me enough of everything, or are others like this also?
I started out doing radiology.
You may want to try the radiology portion since it is less intense and it's a good base, in my opinion. Others may not feel the same way, but I think you are better off starting with radiology as opposed to multispecialty. Best wishes...

Does anyone know of a website that offers a good variety of ortho and/or physical therapy reports? Most websites I find only have a few, if any. Much appreciated!
I've also done quite a few reports
But haven't stopped to count them (at least until now LOL). I know in my last lesson there were 7-8 I did, plus partial reports to reinforce terminology, etc. The current lesson I think has that same amount, I preparing for the mail-in test now (yes, it can be e-mailed, I just prefer mail for some archaic reason). I'm just now in lesson 3 of course 3, so I'm right about halfway through I think.
Question about QA reports
I have been working at my first job out of school for about a month now. Just recently, I have noticed that all of my reports are being sent to about 4 different people, including the owner. Is this normal? I have been told I am doing just fine, but it makes me nervous that all of these people are looking at every report I do. I guess it wouldn't bother me if they had done this at the start, but I'm not sure why all of the sudden they are doing this. Maybe I am just being paranoid. Thanks for listening!

I am a new medical transcriptionist, I have some minimal experience, I have over $500 into books from stedman and also $300 in computer software! I have every single thing needed except the job! radiology is one of the easiest specialties...sm
after all, there's only so much they can say. Heart, lungs, ribs, spine - that's a chest x-ray for you. Very repetitive, if you've heard one, you've heard them all, except when you get into some of the really complex scans. If you could get about a month of training, you would pretty much be able to roll on your own. If you need the experience before getting the job, perhaps you can find a mentor that will let you listen in on dictation with the reports already typed? Great job for beginners.That's where I got my start 25 years ago. 
I agree, radiology is easy, but
there is a bigger threat of being replaced by VR unless you are so good that the radiologist will fight to keep you if needed. Most of the terminology is anatomical terms. They don't change like drugs do, so there are no excuses for getting anatomy wrong. You have to have a large English vocabulary, have great grammar skills, have a 99.5% accuracy rate, and not mind transcribing lots of short notes as well as some two-pagers. If you prefer getting 20-minute reports all day, you won't like radiology. Most of the dictators speak very quickly and efficiently, which is what I like.

I think I would like to see and hear samples before I could figure it out. What happens if the tape is 54 minutes...do you carry over the 6 min extra to the next tape? Or is he saying If I give you 3 30 minutes cassettes a week, it's $60, whether they are full or not. Again if he says a bunch of the same stuff, it could be good! Just use the heck out of your word expander.

I do at least 30 reports per day and usually more like 40 or 50 - they are just office chart notes averaging 1 - 2 minutes per dictation, but still.....
It is really terrible that a school takes advantage of someone like that  - I know now how many reports I do in a day, but someone who is not even a student yet and researching schools might not even think to ask how many reports are given for practice.

I recently had missing reports,
but I found out that I had not signed in or out correctly so the reports for that day were not counted in the total "clocked in" amount. They were accounted for and paid, but just did not show when I checked my status. With this company, I have to clock in and out. What got confusing was that sometimes the platform did not ask me to clock in, although I always exited and logged out. Maybe your problem is as simple as mine was, just a thought.
I see you only transcribe 100 reports with that school ...
not nearly enough. Also, the fact that I have been unable to find anyone who has heard of it means that most companies do not hire graduates of that school. JMHO.
Is there a way for you to print sample reports?
I used to print samples when I was a newbie starting out in radiology 19 years ago. I found that if I did that, and then did handwritten notes on the samples, it made it better. Put them in a notebook with dividers by either dictator or specialty, account, or whatever makes it easier.
For some odd reason, I still to this day when learning a new account print out samples and make handwritten notes. I tend to bring the notebook out, flip it to the dictator I'm working on and it gives me a sense of security.
I also handwrote (I'm only 37-years-old) drug names on a sheet of paper. I guess I'm from the old school, but handwriting things made me remember better. I remember also needing to remember MD or DO for physicians and just as a pick-me-up - there was one his name was First I. Last, D.O., F.A.C.C. and we used to call him DOOFUS (behind his back of course)!!!  Just trying to make you smile!
It will get better. You live and learn!!!! Believe me!!!! Hang in there!
what type of reports are you typing?
I do alot of psyche and some of my reports range from 150-450 lines per report. So when you look at it like that it is not bad. On the other had if you are doing radiology that would be totally different. Again some of mines average from 15-30 lines. That is with a 65 character line.
Don't forget radiology offices in your area.
Never know when they might need some part-time help. Or chiropractic offices. You might do other jobs as well, but variety isn't all bad.

Radiology or Multispecialty test for newbie?
I have tested with a couple of companies that give the option of testing for Radiology or Multispecialty. I'm just wondering, as a new graduate, which test I should choose?
Your experience transcribing reports in school
does not count as the type of experience they are looking for. The only way you are going to get a job is to keep testing, and ACE those tests. Eventually someone will offer you a position. That is what I did when I finished school to become an MT. But, you cannot list your *school* experience transcribing as experience when applying for companies because they will not accept that. We were all newbies once and it is a hard field to break in to. Keep applying, sending out your resume, and testing. That's the only way to do it other than trying to get a job at a hospital, clinic, etc. working outside the home.

I graduated in March of 2005, and I thought I would never find a job. I eventually had to take another job to supplement income, but then out of the blue my prayers were answered and I got a job working at home with my kids. So don't give up, it is possible to work out of your home out of school.
No one is going to give you something for nothing.
Life just doesn't work that way. You will need good training to have any reliable prospects, regardless of what line of work you decide to go into. If you want to be an MT, get the best education you can. The better your training, the more options you will have and the better your income will be. There are two schools that are universally recognized by MT employers as turning out job-ready employees: Andrews and M-Tec. With an education from one of those two schools, doors will open for you. Don't waste your money or your time on one of the cheap schools or allow yourself to be taken in by someone who offers to "mentor" or "train" you "for free", then just keeps you working and working for nothing. Andrews or M-Tec, period.

Rainbow...your post goes to show that it is not EASY. Some people think we just sit and type. There is so much more involved. The only way to get the hard words is through experience. If you try using Stedman's Smartype the words come up if you can get the first few letters. It helps a lot.

I also took the PCDI course. What a waste of money! However, before I even finished the course, I tested with a company and was hired and received a job offer from another company. Both companies were small and local. I think your best bet is to check with local transcription companies, check newspaper classifieds, and check with any MTs in your area. Another MT gave me a list of several small MTSOs in my area that I wouldn't have known about otherwise.
Good luck! You can still find a job even with the education (or lack of) that you got from PCDI.

I was pregnant when I graduated from my program at the community college. So I waited until I had the baby before I started looking for work. After I had the baby, I started pounding the pavement (or keyboard for that matter). It took me four months, but I finally landed that first job!! I love it!!

As a new MT, I understand your frustration. It took me 3 months to find a job. I work at home for a local dermatology clinic with 2 wonderful dictators. They hired to me so they could free up the in-house MT to work on insurance stuff. I've been doing all the typing since my 2nd week.
The only advice I can offer is to make sure your resume looks awesome and apply and test everywhere possible.
It will happen for you. Don't give up. We have to prove to everyone that we can do it.

I have been in this field for over 7-1/2 years and never have taken a course...my mother has taught me everything and basically I worked for her. I have so many people that want to do this profession, but basically they want people with experience...and that is it. I got into it in 1998 with a BS in Biology and after working as a retail manager...I was lucky. My first on-line job, I cried, even after working with my mother on local accounts for over a year. It is tough. I will even say I lied and told them I had worked for a major hospital in order to get jobs...you do what you have to do and hopefully you can just pull it off. This is the only advice I can give you...and good luck! Also..if you can narrow down your expertize, that is a HUGE help...I personally do ophthalmology, which is truly simple, but not many people out there can do it and that narrows the focus for employers. Find something you really like doing and focus on that subject...Radiology is another good one. :0)

I went to community college for my MT degree. I was pregnant when I graduated and waited until I had the baby before I started looking. I had some voice files to practice on to keep my ears in "tune." But once I started looking, I found a job working at home for a local dermatology clinic in about 4 months. I love it and don't really care to work for a national. From what I read on here, there aren't any "good" nationals to work for.

Don't give up. I started out without any training at all and never worked in house. I actually had a BS in accounting. I convinced a local doc to let me do his transcribing. Because he was so difficult to understand and it was oncology none of the other transcribers would take him on. Three years later and I have worked for Spheris and now a local hospital. Just remember, don't give up.
