Since a comma can completely change the meaning of a sentence, it is very important for you to learn when and when not to use a comma in the MT profession. Your school is right to be very critical of comma use. Employers will be very critical of punctuation and grammar. You must have a very good grasp of English grammar and punctuation in this profession to be successful. You will be transcribing for many ESL (as well as some English-speaking) dictators who have no clue how to form a sentence, so purchasing a book on the basics of English grammar and punctuation such as "English Made Easy" would be a good investment.

Good luck to you in your new profession
