I really enjoyed EvCC. They expand on Career Step's program SO much and are really helpful. I still talk to a lot of my classmates via a Yahoo! Group and consider them friends. We always welcome new EvCC students if you're interested .

Woohoo! I did it!
Thanks so much for the support... they did end up sending me some samples (after 2 hours!), and I actually only ended up having 2 blanks! I got over the "oh my God, what did I get my self into!" mode, and actually got some good feedback from my company. Thanks to everyone who is so supportive! I love it!
waive experience so you can test. woohoo.
that hardly sounds like the same thing you posted before. You implied to newbies that if they graduated from the BIG THREE, they could get jobs without fulfilling the 2 year requirement. Lots of places will let anyone TEST even if they don't have 2 years. but to say a company will wave experience sounds like an entirely different story. I agree - you have misrepresented to new MTs what the situation is. It's really not fair to take advantage of people who are looking to get MT training by pretending if they pay the money to go to these schools they can get a job right away. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.
NEW GRAD WITH A JOB! YES, IT CAN & DOES HAPPEN! I'M NOT AN ANDREWS OR M-TEC GRAD!
I just wanted to share that I'm a new grad from EvCC/CS (Everett Community College utilizing CareerStep courseware), and I GOT A JOB! I'm IC status doing straight transcription and start working from home June 1st! I was offered .08 cpl, 24-hour TAT, and no ESL!
I'm posting my news here for a couple of reasons:
1. I want all the new grads out there job hunting to see that there are companies out there willing to hire you! I applied to only 4 companies, and I got this job on day 18 of my job hunt!
2. I'M NOT AN Andrews OR M-Tec GRAD! I believe those are probably great schools, but they are not the only schools that produce grads who get jobs! I graduated with high honors and earned real transferable college credits. If MT work does decline in the future and I need training in a different field, my credits will follow me.
I do believe getting that first MT job is about being in the right place at the right time! I also feel very lucky to have only applied to 4 places before landing this job, but my training played a huge part in that "luck." This company requires 100% on their employment tests, and without the great training I received, there is no way I would have made 100%.
In the end, great training, determination, hard work, and great networking skills will get you an MT job!
EvCC
I graduated from EvCC; they've been using CS's program for a while now. I LOVED going through EvCC; the instructors were great and we were equipped with syllabi, vocab sheets, "cheat sheets," and test prep. I've "heard" it's rare going through a CC for MT and being taught by CMTs, but every one of my instructors was a CMT and my Q2 instructor was Kim Buchanan (sp?).
I'm really glad I chose EvCC instead of CS by itself; I just know it would have taken me longer to graduate and get a job if I had.
I Went to EvCC...
I'm glad I chose to go there instead of Career Step. I liked having instructors, deadlines, syllabi, etc...I'm a procrastinator and need to be "pushed" .
If you have trouble finding a job, you can contact Career Step and go through their job placement thing. You can also choose to take Career Step's final exam after taking EvCC's final.
They use the materials but they expand on them, and everything available to Career Step's students is available to those enrolled at EvCC.
I received a Pell Grant and didn't have to pay out of my pocket because I had no job and, basically, no money at the time.
More questions, just e-mail me!
EvCC
I am in it right now and find it very thorough. You have deadlines which is more realistic than the self paced Career Step program on it's own. Plus it is eligible for all financial aid programs, etc. I'm not graduated yet so we will see what happens.
EvCC anyone?
Does anyone have experience with EvCC and their transcription program? I have been searching posts by students/grads and have heard great things so far, but most of the posts are from 2006 and early 2007. Does anyone have any more recent information?
EVCC
Hi! I recently graduated from EVCC. I took the course on a part-time basis. I thoroughly enjoyed the program and loved my teachers. I received a job right after graduating. There are many excellent programs out there, but 1 plus for EVCC is that you can apply for Financial Aid.
You can e-mail me if you have any more questions at pamelabock37@yahoo.com.
There is also a yahoo group started by a former EVCC student. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thedocsaidwhat/
EvCC
I have been using the CS course, but am not having much luck with it. I just got a pell grant to attend EvCC. They use the CS curriculum, but have CMT certafied instructors. I know I need the feedback badly.
EvCC
Has anyone gone with EvCC? I start with them soon and I would like to know if anyone graduated with them and was prepared for the work.
I took the EvCC CC course (sm)
You won't be lacking in EvCC's course for MT. It was a little irritating that I had to retake classes like medical terminololgy and A&P, but it wasn't too bad.
There are instructors with the EvCC course, and that is one of the major knocks against the standalone CS program--there are no instructors. EvCC takes the CS curriculum and has instructors that assign work and guide you along. Be prepared to be very irritated by the red and blue automated grader. (It's just a quirk that goes along with CS; the instructors will help instruct you the right way. You'll see what I am talking about when you start classes.)
If it helps you any, and I don't know what your personal opinion of AAMT or AHDI or whatever they are calling themselves this week is, but I passed the RMT when it was available and then the CMT when I had 2 years' experience in. I had a job at home the week before graduation.
The only issue that I have found is that local jobs are slim pickings here where I live in rural Iowa, even more so that there is a local community college with a medical transcription program. Oh well. There are plenty of online opportunities, in my experience.
Good luck!
EVCC
I went to EVCC too and was hired soon after graduation. As with any home-based training, you will need to be disciplined to be successful though I did get frustrated by not having easy access to a teacher as in a classroom environment, and I found myself waiting for techers' email responses for too long sometimes. Ended up just teaching myself a lot, but it can be done. Good luck to you!
EVCC
I went to EVCC and got hired with MQ shortly after graduation. They give you the material and it is a matter of how much you apply yourself. I studied above and beyond the assignment requirements, and I was even able to pass the RMT immediately after graduation. If you are determined, EVCC will be sufficient. Being able to get the financial aid made all the difference for me, so I did not really have much of a choice. Good Luck!
congrats!!!
I am very happy for you. I have been playing email tag with Sten-Tel since September. No word on any new openings yet, but congratulations!
Congrats!
Sounds wonderful for you!
Congrats!!!
Congrats!
I started out of school doing PT/OT, and it was absolutely wonderful. It's not as limited as you would think since, depending on why the patient is receiving PT/OT, you are exposed to many different medical conditions/procedures (especially ortho). After doing PT/OT for a while, you will definitely be familiar enough to go out and do ortho with no problem - besides the fact that you will have the advantage of knowing the PT/OT aspect of orthopedics, which is recommended for a large majority of ortho patients.
Straight from my PT/OT gig (right out of school) I was offered, by word of mouth, jobs in ortho, physiatry (not psych - not a typ-o), chiropractic, etc. Also, in my experience, I have not encountered any ESL therapists out there - if ESL is not your thing.
If you take the PT/OT job, can you fall back on the neuro clinic since it would be working for a friend? If so, I would definitely go for the higher pay w/the PT. I'm sure you'll enjoy the work. Plus, if you are going to be in-office, many times the PT clinic will let you use the exercise equipment free of cost - usually with athletic trainers standing by to lend a hand too (if they're nice enough)!
Best of luck to you. Enjoy your new career!
Congrats!
Congrats on finding a job! May I ask what company you got hired with?
Congrats!!
Congrats!
No advice, but congrats on the new job!
Congrats!!!!!!
Way to go I knew you would do it. Hey I am in the same boat rocking with you on those line counts. I have been working for about 5 days and only been able to produce about 6 reports. I know that's not alot but everyday I get higher and higher. Further more, I have to try to make it to 1000 lines. I was like wow. The other thing is that I have nothing but ESL dictators so that's why im starting off slow. People complain about the ESL dictators but I think that it's just a challenge and I love the challenge or else it would be boring. Anyway congratulations and I wish you the best.
EvCC Gorup
Hello,
I am interested in the group, please let me know how to join.
Thnak you!
I'm an EvCC Graduate
I graduated in 2006 and had 2 jobs 3 months after graduating. The instructors are really nice and helpful. A couple of my "classmates" made a Yahoo! Group for EvCC students and alumni.
I meant EvCC CS course
Too many acronyms!
congrats to you and your hubby...sm
Congratulations to you!! You are an online success story but it's nice to see that you, too, recognize that hooking up online can be disastrous!! *S* Best of luck!!!
Congrats...I am happy for you
So, tell me more. I guess I am excited for you because I remember those days...but not quite the same senario. I was considering voluteering when I landed my first job. I did not care...volunteering would bring about experience so I was willing but instead landed a job. The day that I was to start part-time, a full time position came up in medical records (my supervisor was willing to let me transcribe when I was caught up on my work). She was the greatest. She taught me quite a few things. She initially started me out on an ESL doctor and told me that if I could do him then I could do anyone else in the hospital. I really benefitted from that. I can go on and on...
But you tell me about your excitement.
Congrats Ed!! I'm starting the CS
course at the end of March. I'm taking it through Everett Community College, so I'll have additional help from instructors! Maybe we can help eachother out! You'll be about a month ahead of me, but Everett says their timeline to complete the course requires about 40 hrs. a week. Maybe I'll catch up with you quickly if your not studying full-time.
Christy
Congrats! That is wonderful.
nm
Good for you!!! Congrats...
It's basically reciting your resume in most cases. They want to get a feel for you as a person and how you communicate. Then, it becomes online most of the time! Congrats on completing your course!
career step thru EvCC
Hello, I just wanted to say that my experience with the Career Step program partnered with Everett Community College (100% online and available to anyone anywhere in US) has been similar to the MTEC experience described (a real human teacher looking at and evaluating, giving feedback, etc.) It would be about $4000 out of pocket, but due to a large layoff at my company, my tuition was paid. Since Career Step is one of the most well-regarded schools by employers (or so I heard) and I am also getting the personal attention from the aspects of the program added by EvCC, I would say it is the best of both worlds.
Plus, being a community college makes the program eligible for VA/military educational benefits (this includes kids and spouses), worker retraining, displaced homemaker or homemaker reentering workforce, single moms who need vocational training, disabled and need a sedentary job, rural area without good economy trying to increase employment rate through telecommuting initiatives, FAFSA, etc. Many many options to help reduce or eliminate tuition cost.
Career Step EvCC
I've been lurking here for about 2 years and have read all the bad things about Career Step (CS). I would love to go to Andrews or M-Tec, but simply can't afford it. I've decided to go with CS through Everett Community College because of the grants that I will get.
If any of you would be so kind to answer a few of my questions and concerns I would greatly appreciate it!
I was enrolled in my local community college and I got through ENG COMP 101 and the medical terminology classes (with perfect scores) and then they dropped the MT program. They said it was because by the time their students graduated there will be no work for them due to EMR.
My biggest concern is physicians entering their own data. I live in an area that has 2 big hospitals and 1 of them uses no voice at all. No dictation at all! Just took my son there yesterday and mentioned my MT classes to the physician, who was entering data during the visit, and he said MT work is completely dead in the water at clinics (this was an urgent care facility that he was speaking of). How does everyone feel about this? I want to do MT work so badly, but it's right in my face that it soon won't be needed. Opinions please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How do the nationals still have so much work if MT is being phased out? Are healthcare facilities required to start the phase out of MT's?
Okay, about the CS choice with Everett, can anyone tell me if I would be greatly lacking in training? The great advantage I see is that I'll have real instructors by going through Everett. If anyone knows what I would be lacking please advise me!! I know Andrews and M-Tec are wonderful but I just can not afford it. However, I can afford extra books and maybe a used SUM program off of ebay if needed.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this. I know the CS thing has been talked to death. Am I wrong to think Everett will make all better? Am I wrong to think MT work will not be there when I graduate anyway?
Thank you for any input here!!
Congrats and good luck to you!
:-)
Congrats on completing your program.--sm
You also might want to check with your school and see if they can provide you with a list of companies that will waive the experience requirement for their graduates and let you test.
Whee! Have you started testing yet? Congrats! nm

new grad
I see I left out the word
'hire' in my post!

I'm a soon to be VLC grad...
... I've had no problems with the VLC. The instructors are wonderful, especially Carol. The tech team has always been helpful if I needed them. My materials came as scheduled, maybe a few days late but I live in a very rural area so wasn't expecting them on the EXACT date.
I've found the course to be very good. I've already tested for several companies, though I am a few days shy of completing the course, and have been told I am testing very well.
One thing about the VLC is you make your own deadlines, ect. and you will get out of it what you put in. Don't just rule out VLC because one person had a shipment problem.
New grad pay
I started as a new grad doing acute care at 7.5 cents a line. This was a year and a half ago with a large national. However, I think a new grad should be careful not to set expectations too high if they want to get a job.
CS grad here...
I have posted on here before about my experience with CS, it was all good.
I had NO problems getting a job right after school, or getting new jobs since. I think it was money well spent. :)
CS grad
I am a CareerStep grad. Their course is at your own pace. There were no mandatory online classes at all. There were chats that you could participate in, but they had little bearing on the actual course material. There are no instructors; you compare all your course work to a computer program. If your answers do not match verbatim what is in that program you then have to decide whether your answer is correct and phrased differently or wrong. Student support is available by phone and email. Looking at my email logs, I sent in 26 questions/concerns. I got 18 replies. There is a student forum, but any question you post there is typically answered by fellow students. I got through the course in 9 months, but I did work a full-time job during the course. I chose not to pay extra for the job assistance package and found a position through networking on a forum outside of the course.
I did get a job within a short time of graduating, but I trained with 2 M-Tec grads and an Andrews grad. They were way ahead of me from a newbie point of view. I felt like I was constantly swimming upstream just to keep up with them. I ended up getting some of the workbooks they had in their courses and studying at night which helped a lot. In retrospect, I probably should have taken a harder look at the course content and given less weight to the cost issue when choosing a school.
I hope I answered each of your questions, and best of luck to you with what ever course you choose.
M-TEC grad
M-TEC can be completed in various amounts of time. It just depends on how much time you invest daily. I started on May 23, 2006 and graduated on December 10, 2007. I had a lot of things interrupt my studies, but I still graduated before needing an extension. However, extensions are available on a month-to-month basis if you need more time than 18 months to graduate. The course is great, the instructors are knowledgeable and very helpful. All in all M-Tec is the best! Good luck!
M-TEC grad
As an M-Tec grad, I can assure you that we have incredible marketability, and did you know that M-TEC currently has a 100% placement rate of their grads? (I'm sure Andrews' rate is just as good too though - helpful, huh! hehe)
I have never gotten an "Andrews is #1" vibe; the vibe I've always had is the "Andrews and M-TEC are THE top schools" vibe. You cannot go wrong with either school, but M-TEC gets my vote. :)
CAI grad
Hi Erica. I'm a CAI grad and I have 2 friends that are also CAI grads. I loved the course. The director is great about answering any and all questions. They have a great message board for students. They also were very helpful with job placement. Good luck to you!
CAI Grad
I graduated last June and had a job within a week and a half. It is a really good program, easy to follow home study. I needed no additional guidance. When I took the course it was done in 6 months, now I think they give you a year for the same program. More than enough time. I really enjoyed the class. The dictations at the end are tough, but they are trying to train you for the worst of the worst.
NEW GRAD
DO NOT let her apply with TOTH Transcription. They hire anybody, particularly new grads to just type the work, but you will never see a pay check. TOTH is a scam operation. You have to trust me on that.
Look on the forum for all the complaints against Toth Transcription.
New Grad
I did graduate with a certificate in medical transcription. Any help would be appreciated, although from all of the boards I have read it look like you have to be in the right place at the right time. I guess everyone eventually gets that first job.
New Grad Help
Help! How did everyone get their start in the MT business? I just graduated from Penn Foster and I have a medical office background and have worked as a medical claims insurance analyst for 14 years. I have applied to every online MT business I can find, but with no luck. Does anyone have an ideas?
Thanks
Kim
Sorry, but I am a CS grad. I can
of the education one receives there, but also to their business partnerships with the companies that are paid for everyone student that signs up with CS. I can attest to the fact that Andrews and M-Tec provide a more comprehensive MT education than CS does because I train new MTs. Our company no longer hires CS grads because they require far more remedial training and mentoring than grads from the other 2 programs.
New grad needs advice
Hi, I am a new graduate and I had my first interview with a possible in office transcription job. I was offered $8.00 and hour and I was wondering if this was the going rate for new transcriptionist? They asked me what I needed as far as pay, I told them $10 hour... they said and I quote "you will get $8 hour" I live in Tennessee and thought that was low? Any advice?
PCDI grad
Hi, I graduated from PCDI and have been an MT for about a year now. I had to struggle a lot at first, more than people who would have graduated from the better schools, I am sure. I feel very good about where I am at now, though. I have two jobs, one part time and one full time, and have been working at home since December of last year.
However, if you feel you have not learned anything it may be best for you to look into more training. I would not turn around and tell someone looking to get into this field to go to PCDI. There is a big difference from what we learned and what reality is.
I am not trying to discourage you. If you have the will, I am sure you will do just fine. I would, though, really assess how you feel about it because if you wish to go this route, it will take a lot of work on your part. Good luck to you!
recent grad
Just wondering if there are any companies that hire new graduates. I am a recent grad. (Dec 06) and I am having a heck of a time finding people who hire newbies.
thanks
Sorry about the typos ... I'm a CS grad. nm
