Never worry that your degree will be wasted! The number of MTs out there who have degrees, including PhDs, will shock you. There are a number of physicians, pharmacists, and veterinarians, as well--they need to home-school and MT fits right in.
While you are cleaning, sort out all those things you can sell at a yard sale on on EBay. Many of our students scrape up the downpayment that way.
Also, consider cooking for friends and family. We've had students who cooked casseroles and delicious desserts or baked bread to raise funds. Some of them did "meals for a week" in which they'd make casseroles and freeze them. Quite often, they find that the friends and relatives offer a contribution or a loan in addition to buying cooked goodies.
