That sounds like an uncomfortable situation for you. I hope it gets better. Wow, fines. I had never heard of that. I did not think MD's were hospital staff, but contractors. Well, I guess it could be part of the contract to get the dictation done in a timely manner so the hospital could stay in compliance. hm.
What about your other half?
These all sound very inventive, but where is dad/hubby/sig other during all of this? I have a 2 1/2 yo and 5 y/o at home with me all day. I get up at 5:30 work until 6:30, shower dress, get Dad up and around get 7 y/o up and off to school. Clothe and feed the other 2 and sit back down to work for MAYBE 30 minute stretches until it is time to go to preschool, get out of elementary.... Evenings are even worse because then Dad is home and vying for his share of attention!
Dad feels very left out if I say I have to work in the evenings, although I do still work a little bit here and there. If I worked at night the way some of you do, I'd be in divorce court! When do you find time for "adult time" to sit, talk, cuddle.... you get my drift!
I admire you all! If you can do this and keep him happy to, KUDOS! I have to quit at 5 for supper, baths, bed, "adult time" w/ Dad. I max 1000 lines/day  . Next fall 2 oldest in school all day, #3 going to daycare 3 days a week (Tues-Thurs, I think)

I'd try to use your onshore addy and emphasize that you're EFL (English as First Language) if pursuing MT.
learning the terms is only HALF of it. You need the listening Skill.
To be quite frank and honest, graduating 5 years ago does not look good. You would be in a much better position if you went to school online ( you might be able to sail thru rather quickly) at say Career Step. Their grads really have no problem getting hired immediately. They transcribe hundreds of tapes before they graduate. Looks good on a resume.
Why did you choose that course?
Did you do any research on transcription schools? I took on a graduate of AHP, and she didn't know 1/3 of what she needed to know just to do radiology, which is an easy specialty.
why did i choose this course
This is a complete career change for me. I was a mortgage broker for ten years, had three years of typesetting experience for a newspaper when I was young and decided it would be a good idea. Why this course - just because you had one bad experience doesn't mean the course isn't a decent course. Maybe the person was one that skimmed by on the seat of thier pants? Who knows? I've found a couple of people already that took the same course and have jobs. So I believe a lot of it has to do with your resume, wherr you post it, and what you did before school. I managed a mortgage brokerage firm and worked my way from the bottom to the top. I think I am capable of doing this. - if i can't find a job I'll just kill myself - NOT. But I can tell you this I have more constructive things to do with my life then to go around bashing other people and their choices.

Trying to choose a school
Hi,
I have been trying to decide on an MT school, and I am so unsure as to what I should do. What things should I be looking for in a school? Has anyone ever heard about the online programs at Brighton College, or Blackstone College? Are they any good? I want a school that will provide lots of practice dictations, what is a reasonable number of practice hours to expect? Any other input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi all! I've been researching this profession and would really appreciate some input from 'those in the know'!
I need to be at home with my family (long story), but my children (all 3 of 'em) are getting older and I'm in need of some 'mental stimulation'! I would like to find something that will hold my interest, keep my thinking, and requires constant learning (I like that!). I saw an article in our local paper a few months back about med trans, and it really sparked my interest! I had no idea about this profession before, but it seems like it could be my cup-o-tea.
I'm an accounting clerk by profession (if that makes any difference), so that would probably come in handy if I become an IC. Also, I've had a great deal of training with voice recognition (Dragon Speak), which I think could be of an advantage to me as I have an idea of how these program behave (and misbehave!). Also, since I was a child, my preferred reading has been medical books (....weird kid!).
I'd probably prefer something part time, and I'm not in it for 'the big bucks'! My husband has a great job and that has allowed me to stay home, but I would find it fulfilling to make some kind of financial contribution to my family.
To make a long story long.....I'm looking at a Canadian online school called CanScribe (I'm Canadian, by the way!). They seem to be very legit, with a good reputation and are recognized by the AAMT. They are kind of expensive, but it seems to me that the good ones are! I'll be receiving a 'settlement' soon, and I think investing in my education is always a good bet! However, I don't want to be foolish with my investment, and would like some input, like I said, from 'those in the know'!

She is right - choose another profession
I too have been an MT for almost 20 years. These MTs schools will train you to become an excellent MT and they will be glad to take your money too. Then you are a highly trained and skilled MT. If there are no jobs, what do you do with it? It's useless.
Because of EMR and all the outsourcing that has increased since January 1 - you have old MTs with 10, 15, 20 years of experience out job searching again because they have so many years in and they do not want to change professions before retirement. It is so competitive that MTs with 2, 3, 5 years experience will not be able to move in their jobs. A brand new MT is not going to stand a chance. Don't waste your time and money.
Choose the best school... sm
You have experience in general transcription, but that's not the same as experience in MEDICAL transcription... Unless, of course, you typed a lot of brain surgeries and cardiac caths for the police department. *winks*
Right now for a newbie, competition is absolutely fierce for landing that first job. Don't cut corners on your education. Your 'experience' in general transcription will NOT open any doors for you, but completing an MT course from Andrews or MTEC will.
Choose either CareerStep, M-TEC, or Andrews...all 3

If you choose your school solely because it is cheap
you will get a cheap education and pay for it over and over and over again in lost income. Many people who have chosen the crappy schools end up having to be retrained by one of the good schools before anyone will hire them. Just something to think about. It has ever been true that you get what you pay for. And don't let anyone snow you with that old lie "You get out of it what you put into it. Just work really hard and you'll get a good education." Not true with education. You can only get out of your training what is there to be gotten. If it is deficient, it doesn't matter how hard you work, your training will still be deficient. Get a part-time job to save money for one of the good schools, hold a yard sale, wait a few months while you save money, whatever, just don't waste your money and time on an inferior education.
newbie trying to choose a reputable school

It appears as if the OP was so happy about passing the test and receiving that phone call that she rushed to the computer to share her good news with the world. Would it have been so awful to just wish her luck and share her joy? I have been an MT for a year, and I still feel proud and happy each time I pass a test. It is hard for a newbie or someone with less than 2-3 years of experience to get a company to even let you test. When you then pass the test and get a phone call, that is veryexciting and makes you feel good. You could have wished her luck publicly and then sent her an email making her aware of her mistakes along with some tips. This New MTs forum is the last place on this board to post a message like yours.
Why can't some people just let others feel good about themselves?
If you choose Andrews or M-TEC, you won't need a fast track or extra training.
You also will receive, with your course, many of the books that CS students purchase on their own - the Book of Style, the Language of Medicine, better grammar books.
I graduated from CS also. And if I had it to do again, I'd choose Andrews or M-TEC.
This all sounds nice, but newbies have to choose MTSOs wisely and this one is not a wise choice.

I would highly recommend you have the Stedman's cardiology book. The third edition I have also has pulmonary words, but I'm not sure about the newer edition, and you want the newest edition possible in this case to have all the latest stents, pacemakers, and other things used for cardiac patients. For sleep study terms I would expect those to be in the neurology book or pulmonary book, but I'm not sure of the best source.
Use Post-It-Flags in your book to mark sections like the cardiac drug list. Look the books over so you know everything they have to offer. Stedman's books have OPs and procedure reports in the back. If you read those over a few times it will probably help with a lot of phrases your docs may use and help you get a better idea of what to expect them to say.
For the sleep studies you will probably want to make normal reports for yourself, using a program like ShortHand, but wait and see what they may already have set up for you.

I just accepted a position with a national and will be starting on clinic notes. I have some reference materials, but was wondering if Stedman's Pathology and Lab would be a good investment. Would anyone that types a lot of clinic have any advice on reference books that would be handy to have. Or do you all use the internet to research terms?

Reference Books for the New MT
What is your favorite MT reference book? What would you suggest a newbie absolutely has to have to start out in MT?

I don't understand. What do you mean you don't have any reference books? I am also in school, and I currently have 9 books open on my desk while I am doing my practices. How do look up words, medications, abbreviations, grammar & style, instruments, etc? Did you pay for this course upfront? You may want to see if you can get a refund. Call national employers see if they will test you once you graduate. Look around your area for local MTSO and see what they require for employment. I would hate to see you put your all in to a course and then not be able to find a job. Not that you won't, you may be able to. But even if you do your going to have a hard time if you have only done 20 reports and don't have any references. The SUM Cd's are great practice, but there is so much more to learn and I can't imagine doing that with out books. You seem like you really want to do this, I wish you well. I think you should make a few calls before you give this school any more money, just my opinion.

Language of Medicine (Barnes and Noble or AAMT.org). It goes through every body system and all kinds of tests and abbreviations, etc.
I also bought used college text books on anatomy, labs, etc for dirt cheap which helped me as a newbie.
Also, another tip, find some seasoned MTs you can communicate with on messenger. I am experienced but having a few people to get opinions with always helps.

Will be getting back into MT'ing in the near future, and was wondering what everyone would recommend as the three essential reference books to start with (was thinking possibly Stedman's abbreviations, red Dorland's and possibly one other). Hope to utilize online ref's a lot but know there's no substitute for books. Thanks, P
I don't use any Dorland books so don't know what the
red one is, but I use my Stedman's equipment book a bunch, though still have to use on-line sources too as there is always new equipment coming out and the book was probably written a year before it comes out.

I have gotten quite a few Stedman's off of www.half.com (part of eBay, if you're not familiar with it). I've gotten some really good deals, including one still in the shrink wrap. They have some of the really old versions, too, so you have to watch that.

Definitely Dorland's Medical Dictionary. It is much more comprehensive than any of the others. When I was first transcribing (1969!)I learned a great deal of medicine from just reading the whole entry. After that, I would say the PDR. I always tell my students to ask their doctors for any reference books they are replacing. Saves a lot of money. Also, don't buy anything until you have a job. Employer may supply you and, if not, you will be able to deduct their cost from taxes if you are employed.

We do not have reference books. There are about 20 reports to transcribe in the entire course. No we do not use the SUM method. However, I am planning to purchase additional practice tapes from HPI. I was told that they do help with placement. From what I can tell so far, this course gives you the basics of MT. I know now that I will need to practice, practice, Practice.
Stedman's word books
Hello! I'm a recent grad and having been working for about a month now and am trying to build up my library. I have been using some different Stedman's word books which help me out tremendously! I just noticed that they offer a Medical Terms and Phrase book. Does anyone have this? Does this have as much terms as each individual word book or less? Just trying to figure out if I should continue to build based on the specialities I am working on or just get the one book. Thanks! and hope this wasn't too confusing :-)

best ones out there. You can find them on the classified board here, half.com, Amazon.com or at Stedman's website - don't know URL but Google Stedman's Word Books.
I don't believe Andrews lists ALL the books on their website ...
that they provide for their course, just a few. You could contact the head of each school they will actually talk to you and answer your questions. From everything I have read over the last few years, both schools are wonderful.
