We no longer hire new graduates right out of an MT program. We recently did away with our Apprenticeship Training Program and only hire new graduates with 8 months or more of MT experience.

Lynn, how much experience do you have? From which school did you receive your trainng? And which company are you working for? If they hire newbies, please, I want to know! I need a job now, not in two years! :-)
No company will waive their 2-year experience requirement for AHP.
Other than Andrews, the second recommended school is M-TEC, NOT Meditec, they are 2 very different schools.
Expectations for a new MT
A graduate of an adequate program should be able to understand and transcribe even acute-care dictation (hospital) with 98% accuracy without any additional training, should be able to identify unknown material and use standard references to find them, should be able to ask for help from an Editor when necessary, and should not require "checking" and "supervision." A new graduate should be working in a satisfactory, but slow, manner within a day or two, and should be nearly up to speed in a few months.
If you are not able to do this, your training was not adequate.
A sure clue that your training was not adequate is an inability to spell correctly and use correct grammar and punctuation in a simple board post.

With expectations like that, you are sure to be disappointed...
you are right when you say "getting a Medical Transcription service up and running from your home is nearly impossible?!?!" From your exact words, it sounds like to me that you are wanting to start your own medical transcription service from home? Nearly impossible is a good choice of words. It seems to require a combination of perserverance, skill, intense networking and just plain luck. And there is a reason why "Everyone wants someone with "EXPERIENCE" only." I can't imagine a doctor's office saying, "sure, we would love to send you our voice files and depend on your untested skills for our patients' medical records...not to mention keeping our office running." Physicians work very hard to take care of their patients. They can't take an integral part like medical records and just hand it out to any ol' body. They need someone who is VERY GOOD at their job, not only getting the records transcribed, but finding a file transfer method, troubleshooting, fair pricing, etc. Certainly fresh out of school you would not have those skills and it would be as completely unreasonable to expect any doctor's office to contract with you as their service, as it would be to ask the office nurse to do your appendectomy (on her kitchen table LOL).
You say, quite emphatically that "Working from home is my ONLY option right now." Working from home may not be an option at all. You can't DEMAND a job from any one. You can only see what's out there, beat the competition and prove you can meet the requirements. If you can supply what the market demands, you can get a job. But if the market is glutted with MT's with 2 years' experience, well, you are in a tight spot then. So your choices are: either spend months applying, try to get an inhouse job, spend months on an internship, or go into another job market.
While I understand your feelings ("just paid alot of money to train for this, etc"), sometimes it's just not that simple. I am not trying to be discouraging, just honest-- and honestly, it's a very discouraging time right now in the MT field.
What I don't understand is how come so many newbies post here, saying they just finished their program and NOW they are finding out how hard it is to break into the field? Seems like communication between all of us is failing somewhere
application expectations
When a new graduate or inexperienced MT applies for an online position and takes the transcription portion of the application, what are the companies expectations? Are we supposed to be 100% accurate, or do they allow you to leave 1 or 2 blanks where the dictator mumbles to the point of just not being able to understand them?
Do all companies have QA that will review the reports before submission? If so, as an applicant would leaving blanks count against me. Surely the most experienced MT leaves mumbled words blank. Just wondering.

Going on three months...
I am new also and just started working for an MTSO about three months ago. The first month I was only making 100 every 2 weeks, but I am now making 350 every two weeks on part time. I think when you get into two and three different MTSO or whatever, it would just get way to stressful and hectic. I would personally try and find one company that had enough work for you or another company that just needed a fill in, then together you should be able to pull of at least the &500.00 that you need.

GOING ON 4 months though..
I take too much time out to research because I want my reports to be blank free. I also feel like I just am not getting the speed I should be. I am starting to wonder if its because mine are short dictations and it is taking so much time to load each one and then do all new demographics. I have found I am faster on longer dictations.

40K? IN 18 months?
I have been an MT for 9 years . First year made 30K. Second year 33K. Last year, my 8th, I made a whopping 36K. Full-time. Lots of normals/expanders. You definitely are NOT going to become rich in this field. If you want 40K within 2 years, you are going to have to do something else. If you can wait several years, you may be able to do 40K, if you are lucky. The pay for this field is actually going DOWN not up .
Me too, they said I could try again in 3 months.
I took my time with the test and got through the entire thing. I don't see how I was that bad. I'd like to know what my shortcomings were too. They said I could try again in three months. Good luck to all of us.
MT for 6 Months....sm
I have been working as a MT for about 6 months. I guess I am still considered a newbie. I make $.09 cpl and I am an IC and currently transcribe for 4 different CRNPs. Some days I may transcribe for 2 of them and then there are days that I only transcribe for 1. When I have 2 of them to transcribe for, I would say that I average 800 to 1000 lines for that day and it ususally takes me most of the day. If I have just 1 to transcribe for then it would be between 400 to 500 lines a day and it only takes me a few hours. Does this sound right for someone that has only been working for 6 months or should I beable to do more lines in an 8 hour period?
No, the woman who owns this company can't transcribe herself, much less run a company.

Any company that charges anything to work is not a reputable company. However,
if a company offers a job and requires that you have a certain pedal and offers to provide it and then take it out of say your first paycheck or couple of paychecks, then that is acceptable.
My belief is that companies that charge you for software or anything else is trying to make money off of you.
While $11.95 isn't much, figure that amount times 10 or 20 or 100 and what do you come up with? Smells like a scam to me.

They are not a reputable school and I went there so I should know. Even when they did have Trans. Relief Services they never answered my email about employment upon graduation.

I've been at this for 6 months...
I'm an IC getting paid per MB of dictation, but it averages around 6 cpl. I've been trying to decide if I should stick it out until I can put 1 year of experience on my resume or get out of there. The problem I've seen is that none of the companies are paying newbies worth a toot. Right now, I have a dream of a dictator. I'm the sole MT on this account through a national. Is your work easy at least, to counter the lower pay? That's what I keep telling myself when I'm tempted to run for the hills. You never know what you'll get with another company. The work may be awful.

there are better places to work for that pay much better. For the new MT, they have a great training program and mentoring, but I did not stay there longterm as the pay was very low and the benefits were awful. I only wanted to be an employee for the medical benefits, but their medical was more expensive than if I purchased it on my own. The account I was on was also horrible (mostly ESLs). I was stressed day after day trying to make my line count. Since being away from Spheris, I have never had an issue with meeting line counts and actually do 2x the amount of lines each week working 10 hours less. I don't know what it was about there, but I just couldn't get over 120 lph. I would never go back there, but I did learn a lot while I was there.
10,000+ dictation minutes in 6 months.
I went to Career Step so that is all I can compare it to. According to the eSmartMed site, Career Step has 1320 dictated minutes to transcribe (not sure if that is accurate as it has been so long since I went through the program, but it is probably close). It took me 7 months to get through Career Step doing those 1320 minutes, so I don't see how it is possible for a student to do 10,000+ in 6 months. If I had had to 10,000+, it would have taken me years to complete the course, not months.
It only took me a couple of months to get out of unpaid status!

Career Step only give you a year, so at M-TEC you have 18 months and will learn a LOT more.
Your post made it sound like you would rather take more time to do the course, but there's a reason M-Tec requires it done in 18 months.
You can't really learn if you drag it out longer than 18 months. You have to keep doing it, working at it, familiarizing yourself with it, in order to learn it. That is why they push you to not drag your feet, either do it or don't do it!

so you've been MT'ing for 6 months and I've been at it for 25 years but I don't know
what I'm talking about...that's a good one. The purpose of this board is for experienced MT's to give information to new MT's. One of the developments in this field is its recent downturn. We have a responsibility to be upfront with what we see, know and any conclusions we might draw. With less than 1 year of experience in the field, I hardly think you're in a position to give an educated answer regarding things like job markets, global influences and technological challenges. But then again, people like to only listen to things they like to hear...so have at it!

I agree with you. I look at these boards and the "so-called experienced" MT's can't spell everyday words and do not know the difference between add and ad. I did transcription long before part of these people were born -- for an acute care hospital. I can't find a job now without taking a test when years ago all I had to do was go in a hospital and have a doctor dictate a report (which I took either in shorthand or typed while he was talking) and got a job immediately. Ileum and ilium meant different part even back then. I still think a big part of being successful in this type work is being "cut out" for it. I rest my case.
Anyone have experience with TRS?
I was looking at attending the TRS Institute for my MT training. It's so hard to weed out the good schools from the bad though. They promise a guarantee that if you successfully graduate from their course, then you will have a job working with their company, Transcription Relief Services. Has anybody taken their course or worked with their company? Any information is helpful. Thanks so much!

I graduated from a technical school and have been trying to get a job as a transcriptionist. I made 100% in my transcription classes, yet no one is even willing to talk to me because I have no transcription work experience. I'm sitting here wondering if I wasted my money on this school. I have experience with many computer programs, medical terminology classes and more. I have worked as a secretary in a hospital, and a veterinary office. I wanted to start transcription as soon as I finished school but I'm having no luck finding employment. Can someone tell me if I just wasted $10,000.

I have not been out of school very long and it was very tough finding a job. I started by sending my resume to every company I could send it to. Even if the company stated they wanted two years of experience. My resume outlines my specific skills as an MT, i.e. computer, terminology, etc...and also outlines lists the specific courses I took in my college program.
There are literally hundereds of companies out there. I don't know if you are wanting to work from home or work in a hospital, clinic, or doctor's office, but I would do the same thing either way. I sent my resume to many, many companies.
If you are looking online and the company website offers testing for employment, take the test. That is how I ultimately landed the job I have now. The company I work for states they want 2 years of experience, but I tested for them and they hired me because I passed.
It is not easy to land that first job. You just have to be determined and keep at it. It is not as easy breaking into this business as it is getting any other job. But once someone gives you that chace, you'll be set. Good luck!

I applied at the local hospital as soon as I got out of school. They wouldn't hire me as a transcriptionist, but hired me as a medical secretary. That job was a nightmare. I've applied at every place I can think of around here, but no luck. I finally decided to try the internet. I'm gonna see if I can find an independent contractor. Thanks for the idea!

I've been sending my resume to every company I can find. It lists all the classes I took in school, my internships, employment history, and awards. I found a couple of companies on here that offer testing. I didn't have enough time to take the test the other day, so I'm gonna do it now. Thanks for the advice. It makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only 1 that has had trouble finding an MT job!

I even testing with low paying companies on purpose just to get experience and received the reply, your skills are impressive however you do not meet our requirements. It is soooooooo hard finding a job in this field!

I had the same issue when looking for work. Although, I sent my resume to NUMEROUS companies, six were willing to test me. Four of them I failed and the other two I quit in the middle of the test because they had ESLs in there and we weren't even trained on ESL dictations. I wanted to cry!! I finally got a job with a local company that is willing to hire newbies. You need to post your resume anywhere you can, apply to anyone who requests 2 yrs. experience, adn surf the net for MT companies nationwide. Apply everywhere, the worst that can happen is they don't hire you. I started hounding the company I am working for three months before they hired me. Every week. Never gave up. Vatterott was the only technical school in this town offering secretarial courses. I had a bunch of classes, not just transcription. I can honestly say I learned a lot, but their job placement is a joke.

I did not have a medical experience prior to doing MT. I was an engineering instructor, had a BS and an MS in industrial engineering, but left all that because of my son. Thinking that this was a rich environment for discussion, I innocently posted the school where I received my training and I got all the bashing. Anyway, because of all that a kind heart who happened to see that I was being bashed gave an offer to me and here I am - transcribing reports and enjoying to see my son grow up.
BTW, not all forums are nasty. I still come and peek once in a while. It's probably just those MTs who are not getting the satisfaction and not getting enough work who find time to aggravate others.
I think it is low....but you need experience.
I do not think you will gain much experience in way of a doctor's office, but at least it is something. Take the job, and continue to send out resumes for jobs that pay you for production, i.e. 6-8 cents per line as a start. There is no incentive with an hourly job to do more. You make the same either way (which can be a good thing if you are not a very fast typist). When starting out in this field, beggers cannot be choosers. You need to get experience and this will be (albeit not much)experience.
