I now have my own MTSO. I require experience of everyone except Andrews and M-TEC grads. In my experience, they have performed wonderfully, even without experience.

If you have received adequate training
from a school recognized by MT companies to turn out job-ready MTs (Andrews, M-Tec, Career Step), you should have no trouble at all finding work. Your school should be providing placement assistance. They should know what companies are familiar with their training program and are therefore eager to hire their graduates. Go back to your school and get them involved in your job search.
It has to do with the education you received and what your skills are.
If you paid for a crappy course and didn't learn half of what you need to know, why should a company let you prove what little you did learn? They know which schools provide GOOD training and which do not. You also need grammar help, it's "should have" not "should of," if you don't know simple English grammar why should anyone trust your medical terminology skills?
Just received a foot pedal that I need for a job I will be starting...sm
Everyone starting on this new account I was hired for need a Boomerang foot pedal so my recruiter sent them out. I told her that since I work on my laptop I needed a USB but she never responded. When I opened the package it has a 15-pin port. I did a search and it seems that is what is available. Is there an adapter so I may fix this problem. Otherwise, I'm not sure what can be done except letting them know I won't be able to take the position.

I had multiple job offers when I graduated. I make excellent money now, after getting out of the learning curve of new accounts, etc. You might contact them and see if some of your training already received can be credited. Just an idea. I called around before I even went to school. All the employers told me to choose Andrews or M-Tec if I wanted marketability.
One school tells you to put "MT" after graduation
I know one that tells students they can put MT behind their name as in Jane Doe, MT when they graduate. That is so bogus! Any school that tells you to do that isn't being honest with you. They are telling you what they think you want to hear.
HELP! I need to find work before graduation due to disability!
I am currently enrolled in an online medical transcription course at M-Tec and have 6 more months to go until graduation. The reason I chose MT is because I can't work a regular job due to physical limitations. I have had 10 laparoscopies for endometriosis and my body has been destroyed from the adhesions and chronic pain.
My question is- Is there a way that I can find work as an MT before graduation? I am desperately in need of money and would like to be able to find an entry level position using my MT skills that I have learned so far.
I know this is a lot to ask, but I really need some help. My COBRA medical insurance runs out next month. I am desperate to find some sort of in home work, preferably as an MT, but could also do other computer related online work as well.
I looked into Trans Am and Thank goodness I didn't fall for the $400+ software and books for "training" scam. I've already put well over $5000 down for my MT training + books and supplies- I can't afford to invest much more.
Any info would be much appreciated!

I started working from home within 2 days of graduation.
I have been with my same company for coming up on 6 years now. I had some tough days in the beginning, but I dug in, learned as much as I could, and made it through the hardest part. In-house may be better for some starting out, but it worked for me being at home as long as I was willing to work hard. Good luck to you. :-)
company was sold so they have no company to hire you after graduation!
They are not a reputable school and I went there so I should know. Even when they did have Trans. Relief Services they never answered my email about employment upon graduation.

I saw the list a couple or so weeks ago with all the list of companies that someone had compiled (brillinat), that will probably hire newbies. I can't find it! I am doing a paid externship at a local transcription company but I am not getting paid a lot. I need to find part time or full time work with another company. Help!

If you are going to make such a bold statement that you see as truth why didnt you list your name? Of course you listed as anon. I am the MTSO for Proficient Transcription and have been in business for over 10 years. The start up cost associated covers the cost of the foot pedal which, by the way, is $79 alone. I dont think it is too much to ask for a MTSO to have a little bit of insurance when it comes to hiring a newbie. Why would anyone invest the money in the foot pedal for a newbie if this is their first position if the MTSO has no guarantee of their work? I am helping out and doing something not a lot of companies do and that is to give a newbie a chance. If that is perceived as a scam then so be it. My MTs receive work daily and are paid competitively for it. You have no idea what it is like to try and run a transcription business and unless you do then please keep your defaming comments to yourself. This kind of banter is what scares away MTSOs from hiring anyone without experience. I was given a great chance to get into this business without dropping thousands of dollars into schooling and all I was doing was trying to help someone else do the same. This girl was talking about purchasing hundreds of dollars in books and paying the same for schooling and I was offering on the job training but I cant afford to do that at my own expense of all the equipment. I dont understand what is so hard to understand about that.
Not a list of MTSOs
just a list of transcriptionists. You can add yourself to the list at no charge. Just fill out the form.
List of books
Language of Medicine (Barnes and Noble or AAMT.org). It goes through every body system and all kinds of tests and abbreviations, etc.
I also bought used college text books on anatomy, labs, etc for dirt cheap which helped me as a newbie.
Also, another tip, find some seasoned MTs you can communicate with on messenger. I am experienced but having a few people to get opinions with always helps.

That site is where I found my first job. I recieved 13 responses from that list and I had ZERO experience. I have been working now for one month. :)
Good Anatomy list
Do you want to find anatomy list? Look at Mosby's handbook of anatomy physiology. The book is very good. If you need the book, I can sell mine $10.00. I have other good books too from my previous course. I give up transcription career.

You need to go with proven schools. If you short yourself, you will eventually end up forking out more money to get the right education.
This is a huge list of MTSOs.
This list is huge. A lot of these seem to be small businesses. I only looked at one state, but the list was long. Not many have websites, but some of these businesses are still doing tapes and offering a wide range of services. You will therefore want to look mainly in your own State.
If they can only receive resumes by mail or fax they are not getting swamped with them, so you might have a better chance. . Happy hunting!

a site where you can post your own business if you want. Most of the postings are solitary MT's, just like you and me.
Try making a handwritten list as you have to look up
the drug names. I have a lot of experience, but I also get stuck on drug names sometimes. That is my weakest point as well even though I hate to admit it, but one thing that helped me is to handwrite on a piece of paper that sits next to you all of the new drug names and their correct form (whether to cap or not), and then for some odd reason (it worked for me) when I'm transcribing I'll think to myself, oh wait, I know that one is on my list. Googling is good too, but you have to watch the sites as not all are consistent or may not be correct. Googling can pull up all forms of that word being used, so just be careful there. You'll get there, and happy MT'ing...

How do you make such an expander list?
I just bought ShortHand and have a few words/phrases in it. I have no system as for deciding what to put in it. How do you decided what to do? I really need to improve my line count. Any info appreciated.
I tried to google Missy's list
and got nowhere. Maybe the site is down now. I found out about it from Meditec (clicked on references/resources then job links). I just tried that now and it took me to a page of just advertisements. So, I guess it is down now. What they did was charge a fee for access to their list of MT companies and private forum. They'd usually say a little bit about the MT companies such as how much experience they required before testing, if they allowed newbies, etc. All of that info you could get elsewhere on you own, but it was kind of helpful having a lot of it in front of you when job hunging. Basically that was it.
It sounds like the site you are talking about is a good idea. Maybe it would be something we all can use. If you move forward with it, let us know.

There is no difference in training. In general, I think it would be easier to start out in house if possible. There will be other people to help you with questions, etc., plus most in house positions are hourly positions. You may still have a quota to meet, but at least you can count on the hourly pay.
Your training would need to be very good to start out at home in the beginning. At home you are pretty much on your own. You will need good reference materials. Most at home positions are paid by production. That is good if you are fast. But if you are just starting out, you may not make much in the beginning.
All of this will depend on your individual needs and wants. I think the best case scenario is to get a job in house for a couple years, then transition to home. Good luck.

Long story, but the bottom line is after they switch me to something I'm unfamiliar with they tell me they don't have the time to train me on it, so where do I go from there. Then the company instituted some 98% accuracy policy and new QA policy. I would never met their expectations so why bother? If they were accommodating, I would understand, but they don't have the time. I understand that. Just want suggestions to assist me so if I try again will be more prepared.

If you are an IC, they only need your SS number. If you are an employee, then they need two forms of ID, such as driver's license and one other (maybe copy of birth certificate) and your home address.
A lot of companies who hire people for IC positions don't know the law and ask for all kinds of stuff.
They don't need a copy of your SS #, only your number.

First of all, I can't believe the company did not provide you a foot pedal.....hmmmm. Anyway, try going to www.transcriptiongear.com. They have every kind of pedal. If you call their toll-free number and tell them you need a pedal for eScription, I bet they will know what you need. Also, you could try going to www.escription.com and asking questions on their forum. Good luck-!!

First, do an extensive search on the internet for medical transcription companies, then test with the ones that will allow you to. Even though some companies may say they require two or more years of experience, some will waive that if you do well on their test. Try Spheris and Sten-Tel. They are known for sometimes hiring newbies.
Second, don't get discouraged! It can take a while to land your first job, but be persistent. It took me about five months for me to get my first job. Once you are in, then you will be gaining the experience required for applying for other jobs down the road.
Third, NEVER pay to work! This might sound strange, but there really are scammers out there ready to prey on newbies desperate to get their foot in the door. Some will say you need to purchase their software, or a footpedal directly from them, but you don't. You can always purchase those things independently.

M-Tec is the actual name of an excellent on-line school. Google that spelling plus medical transcription and you'll find the website. The other school would be Andrews, do a Google search the same way. Read about those programs and see how yours compares.
These 2 schools are worth every penny because students do get jobs right away.

I've been with Spheris 5 years....the supes are decent, pay on time, platform is fine, insurance not good, some accounts end up in India, some will not, pay is average. I have been on same account 4 years.

The reason for this is that after testing "x" number of graduates of XYZ school and finding out that 90% or more of them could NOT pass the employment test, companies decided to stop wasting time and just tell those grads that they need 2 years' experience.
On the other hand, after testing "x" number of grads of Andrews and M-Tec and discovering that 90% or more COULD pass the employment test even without experience, companies agreed to waive the experience requirement and allow grads of those schools to test.
Sure, there might be a few people from the not-so-good schools who might be able to pass, but who has that time to waste to weed them out?

We do not grammar police at MTStars. As was stated, MTs come to this site to relax, for enjoyment. If one is searching for employment, the appropriate avenue is to send a resume to a potential employer. Whether there are mistakes in one's resume is not the problem of the posters here. A simple post here will not always be an accurate portrayal of one's skills, and I think it is unfair to assume such.
