Andrews School
provides about the best MT training available. Even their training, however, is NOT equivalent to two years' experience. That is simply not a reasonable assumption. However, should you do the smart thing and select Andrews for your MT training and complete it successfully, you will come out FAR ahead of someone who chose one of the cheaper or less reputable MT schools. The reason companies waive the two-year experience requirement for Andrews graduates is not because they actually have two years of experience, it is because they know that they are getting a well-trainined newby who will require a minimum of handholding and someone who has been trained to deal with the realities of being an MT. You should have no qualms whatsoever about choosing Andrews. M-Tec is an equally good school that would offer you the same chance of early success. Many Career Step students have also found their transition to work to be relatively painless.

I am a current student at Andrews and I can tell you that there is a reason why this school is highly recommended, it is a great course. The boards are private because the students want it that way. There are not any students complaining about the program, because there is nothing to complain about. It is an exceptional program. The Andrews culture is very diverse. It is a positive, supportive, and extremely kind group of people. The program is well structured. The instructors are very professional. You are only required to participate in the instructional forums. If you do not wish to participate in the social forums you are not required to. If you are looking for a program with no extra nonsense this is it. I urge you to contact Linda Andrews, she is very easy to talk to and will answer your questions completely and honestly. I love attending the Andrews school and I am confident it is the best MT education available.
Andrews School
Before I enroll I want to hear from people who have actually received employment from this school. I went to PCDI and actually worked for a year but I cannot get employment at all. I have been looking local and on the net. I liked the job I had but the work ran out and no one else will hire me. If anyone has anything good or bad I would like to hear it.

I am a student at Andrews, and I would be offended by your comments if I didn't know better. Have you ever called Linda? If you had you would not feel uneasy about her being the contact person. She is a lovely person, very easy to talk to, and she will answer any questions you have. You have choices with your payment plan. She never asked me to pay upfront, and Andrews doesn't charge interest on your student loan. Linda is a very involved with the students. She follows every student's progress. I think the only reason you would feel uneasy about Linda Andrews or Andrews School is because you haven't talked to her. In my opinion, Andrews is indeed promising, to say the least.

I have been a student at Andrews for 7 months. During that time, several people have graduated and have found employment within weeks of graduating. Some of those people were off QA in 4-5 weeks. I have never come across anyone that has anything negative to say about his or her experience with this school.

The Andrews School does not receive monies from any employer for any reason. They test and often hire our graduates because they want to test and hire them. I don't have any hiring arrangements with any employer. I hope that helps a little with the discussion. I don't keep track of what other schools do. They will have to answer for themselves.
M-Tec vs Andrews School
I am getting ready to start classes for MT and i've been trying to do as much research as possible. I think i've narrowed the schools down to M-Tec or Andrews but I would love everyones opinion on which school would give me a better education.

Question about Andrews School...
Hello.
I am considering becoming an MT. If I do decide to attempt to enter into this profession, I have decided that I want to attend Andrews for my MT training. I have read numerous people say that once you have finished with Andrews, if you really apply yourself, you will have the equivalent of 2 years actual working experience. Personally, this seems unrealistic. Would anyone here say that it’s true that if you do well at Andrews that you will be at a similar level with an MT who has 2 years experience? I have read that it is quite typical to have the 2- year-experience-requirement waived if you have completed your training at Andrews, but beyond that, is it at all realistic to think that a newly-hired Andrews graduate will be able to hit the ground running, and be very confident in his/her abilities.
I realize that this is somewhat of a strange question because everyone’s different, and not every Andrews graduate is going to be at the same level after their training, but I’m talking in general terms.
It would really be quite the motivator knowing that, although the studying and practicing will be tough, I’m going to be able to rock-n-roll when I get through, and there will be less of a learning curve upon being hired.
I do realize that, regardless of where you get your training that the “real world” always presents different challenges than what you prepared for in school.
I have all of the tuition money saved and I’m ready to get started, however, before I spend the money, I really want to cover all my bases.

It depends on the school you went to. If you went to Andrews or
M-Tec you stand a good chance of getting a job. If you took one of the cheaper courses like At Home Professions your chances aren't very good at getting an at-home position, but you might get a position in a local clinic or a hospital. Does your school not offer job placement?
Post your resume on the various job boards.
Frankly you would have been better staying with coding as there seems to be a pretty good demand for that and you'll make more money with coding.
They are not a good school; try Andrews or M-TEC

Career Step is a distant third. Any other are not worth the money and nobody will waive the 2-year's experience for any schools but those.

I've been working for a service for 2 years now and I am looking to branch out and solicit some local doctors. This may be a stupid question, but do I need to buy my own equipment? I do have my equipment I need to transcribe, but what about getting the files to me? Thanks for helping!!
Need advice from current or former Andrews School students
Hello,
My daughter wants to go to school to become an MT and wants me to recommend the best school. I've been an MT for 10 years and went to a community college, but she needs an online school. I have heard on this board that Andrews is one of the best schools.
Could anyone who has experience with this school tell me about their experience, whether the school is work-at-your-own pace, and just their general likes/dislikes about the school, and most of all--do you feel it prepared you well to begin your career (for those who have graduated and started working). I would appreciate any info so much!

It's sort of........
difficult but make sure your resume is outstanding. Apply to every freaking company in the world cause there are companies created everyday. The companies and list that are floating around on this board that is not even all of them. But like you said it takes dedication and you have to want it. I hope this helps.
I was sort of in your shoes
I just went through that whole process after going through another school and I don't feel like I got the right training. ~ I just started at MTEC and after looking over the materials that I will be going through, I know I definitely made the right choice. I didn't really how much I never learned at this other school until I saw how thorough this one is. I'm excited to see what lies ahead.

It definitely enriches the Career Step material. I don't think the CS material by itself would be entirely adequate to begin working productively out of the gate in MT, but that is my opinion. With added instruction through community colleges that use the curriculum, then it's kicked up a notch.

I have been very successful as an independent contractor. You should really consider it.
you really need some sort of designated work space
It is not practical to pick up and move multiple times a day. A good, comfortable chair is crucial for long periods of sitting. Will you be able to move that? I have upwards of 20 reference books (I do acute care) and cannot see moving those around on a daily basis. I think you will find that unless you can get "in the zone" you will not be productive and perhaps even be distracted as you try to work. Probably not what you want to hear, just my two cents. M-TEC financial assistance
Did you actually speak with someone from M-TEC? If you go to their website under Prospective Students and then under Tuition/Financial Assistance, it states they offer plans, and other info is listed as well. If you have not actually called them yet, then do so. I would not recommend At Home Professions.
Financial Assistance???
I am currently a full-time-college-student-but-otherwise-SAHM. Pretty soon we'll be needing more money, but I have neither time nor resources (day care around here is INSANELY expensive) to work outside the home. I've been doing the reasearch and have come to the conclusion that MT is a good job option for me.
The problem is the training is sooo expensive! I mean,if we didn't need the money I wouldn't be looking for the training to begin with--so obviously I don't have $1600-4000 up front for the training. And most of the payment plans I see aren't looking much better--like $1000 up front, $350 every month after that. Right now that's just not feasable.
Are there any MT schools that offer reasonable financial assistance? Or, I'd even be cool with a payment deferment plan or something!
Anybody know of a school that's willing to help the financially strapped?

MTEC does offer financial assistance.
While MTEC is expensive it is also one of the top 2 MT schools out there. You get what you pay for. Also, they do accept financial aid. Check out their site, they have a person on staff that handles situations just like yours!
(Oh yea, I am a student at MTEC!)
Apply for child care assistance and put the kids in daycare.
You can't juggle all that. Either that or have the father watch his own kids for a while so you can work.
MT Programs
I'm currently a Transcriptionist and a friend of mine wanted to get into the profession, however she had a question that I could not answer. Is anyone familiar with if you are able to use Pell grants towards an MT school? I figured I'd ask everyone here!

typing programs
I used this website www.typingtutor.com and it was very helpful. You said you were using a MAC? I don't believe you will be able to use that once you are working, and I think that is a problem with training with M-Tec because of the software they use.You can check with them, but I'm pretty sure I saw that on their website.
Shareware programs
She said this is a set up fee that is the responsiblility of the MT. She use to pay the fee, but some MTs will leave after they get better. There are some shareware programs that the client requries and she is charged a fee when she add a new user the system. Does this mean I am paying for work?

These programs are not required...
These extra programs are not necessary. CS grads can get decent jobs without them. Some prefer to have the extra training. The STT program prepares the students to start work with Spheris at an acute care level.
I cannot compare my education to the other schools and I do agree that the other schools may be better for some. For me, I had a medical background which included transcription. I felt that I would be fine without the one-on-one interaction. If I did have problems with the something, I did pick up the phone and called CS. The staff was very friendly and helped anytime I needed it. I am now a grad and am currently trying to decide between four different job offers one week after graduation.
No it isn't. Their programs are written so you
only have to have an 8th grade education to be able to take them. My teen took a class through them and he knew more than what they were trying to teach and there was lots of misinformation in them.
The saying that you get what you pay for is true here. You'd just be wasting your money because your chances of getting a job without further education or finding a menitoring program are very slim.
Mentoring Programs
Has anyone heard of the AIM Mentoring Program thru Allstate Transcription? They are asking for $99.00 for the entire 12 week program with possible employment at the end. I am wondering if this is a route I should go since I am having trouble getting a job.

I applied to a company called Accustat (www.accustat-mt.com) and they responded that they don't hire new graduates, but they do have a mentoring program. There is no fee to join the program and it does pay a little, but I would have to purchase some equipment that I don't currently have. They also require you to produce at a certain level or they will drop you, but they haven't told me how much they expect yet. I guess that is what makes me nervous about it. I just can't afford to make financial mistakes right now. Has any one been through Accustat's mentoring program?
OSI, Heartland Mentoring Programs
Just wondering if anyone has heard of these mentoring programs. I, too, am finding it hard to get a job with no experience. Are these programs worth it? Has anyone out there gone through these? Please give some friendly advice!
There are line count programs
available. If you use Word, you can go up to Tools, Word Count and take the characters w/spaces and divide by 65. That, of course, is assuming that you are paid for spaces - which some places do not do.
word expander programs
I am getting close to birthday time as well as graduation and want to ask for a word Expander program as a b-day present from my husband  Is there a decent priced one out there that still is easy to use and works well. I have heard of Smarttype but that is pretty expensive (though I hear well worth it) Are there any others
Intern/mentor programs
I am a recent graduate having difficulty finding employment. Would you recommend Allstate Transcription (AIM) or Meditec - both require a fee to join their programs but guarantee experience and if you reach the 98% accuracy rate, very high rate of employment opportunities.
I am not saying all apprenticeship programs are scams.
I am saying that in the not-so-distant past, the companies that wanted you to pay up front for training or wanted you to pay to work for them were scams. Now, I think that companies have found more effective way to defray the cost of, or in some cases profit from, hiring and training new grads. Yes, it is costly and time consuming to get a new grad up to speed as far as quality and productivity, but in the past, having a mentor train and provide feedback and guidance to a new grad was SOP. It was seen as an investment for the future in a way. Now some companies want you to pay them or to work for free during your "apprenticeship" which has made it even more difficult for the uniformed or the desperate to discern which companies are scams.
I have previously been advised not to post names of companies that do hire newbies because they get inundated with applicants that either do not have the requisite training or have no training at all. Also, most companies,especially the small to mid-size services, only hire grads intermittently because of the resources required to train them.
The very best resource for who hires graduates of your education program is the school itself. Often companies or MTSOs that have an opening or two for a trainee will contact the schools they know provide quality graduates ready to enter the job market. www.transcriptionresource.com has a rather comprehensive list of companies with links to many of their websites.

Honestly, there are a number of MT programs that do
provide an education adequate enough to pass entry-level exams. If you went to one of these programs then you may need to take an honest look at your options.

Not all foot pedals work with all programs - sm
so unless you are buying a digital player like Bytescribe or ExpressScribe, etc. there is really no point to just buying a foot pedal. You may buy a serial port one and land a job where only a USB port pedal will work (it happens). So far I have been lucky and my serial port pedal that I bought with Bytescribe has worked for all but 2 jobs I have had. The one job loaned me a footpedal, which I returned when I quit, and the other I had to purchase a USB pedal for Start/Stop, unfornately that one was probably a waste of money as I did not like their platform or the work so will probably end up selling it here or on ebay someday. --but if you need one so you can take tests then download the free version of Express Scribe and get the kind they recommend to work that (I use a 9-pin serial port pedal)-- though it would probably be smarter to get a USB pedal if it works with that as I think more companies use the USB pedal, though sometimes it is all in the set up of the program/foot pedal.
