Thank you so much for your post!
I completely agree with you. Just because MTs work from home does not mean we don't have expenses. In fact, from a student stand-point, there are plenty of expenses incurred just to get into this business. So far I have paid tuition for five months, purchased a new computer, reference books, transcription equipment, work books to study for the RMT, BOS, membership fees (as required by school), etc., etc. This is just the start. Next I will have to purchase software to work from home (unless, of course, the company I work for will pay for it, more than likely not).
Then, not only is there the things I have purchased but my time invested. I believe my time is valuable. In fact, I work FT nights and go to school, my husband works FT days, and I have two young children (one is not even in school yet). So when I say my time is valuable, I mean it. All of this time I have invested in becoming a qualified MT should not be to work for nearly nothing. I have not sacrificed valuable time with my family to come out with less in the end.
Also, I have read several posts from those of you who are the sole providers for your household, and I applaud you. It is not an easy road when all of the responsibility falls on one person. However, just because I am married and my husband makes decent money does not mean that I am willing to work for less than I am worth.
I'm not expecting to strike it rich working as a MT; however, I do expected to be compensated as a professional, even as a newbie.
