Taking classes for medical terminology and "some transcription"

Most nationals will only consider you if you are an actual graduate of one of the AAMT-approved courses. If not, she may look for local clinics who are willing to train.

Medical terminology
I have to agree that this is one of the most fun courses in the MT program!
That said, do you have a good bookstore nearby? If so, maybe you can go in and take a peek in the "RMT Study Guide". That will give you a great idea of the extent of terminology you will be learning.
Good luck (but you'll do great)!
medical terminology
The medical terminology needed to be an MT is much more in-depth than most people realize. It's not something you can jump right into and start making decent money. There is also the fact that even if you know a lot of med terms, you have to be able to understand the doctors, who often have difficult accents or just don't speak well. Some people have been lucky enough, with a little knowledge of med terms and typing/spelling/grammar skills, to find a company that will take them on and train them (I did this, 13 years ago - I never went to MT school - I had a bachelor's degree in nutrition). I know there are others who had similar experiences. But this was years ago and these days (from what I'm reading on the board)I think the MT training programs are the best way to go. You'd be much better prepared. I know MT sounds like a wonderful work at home opportunity, and it can be, but it really does take time to build up the skills to make money at this. Good luck.
scared of medical terminology
Could anybody please explain to me how much medical terminology one has to learn while studying at M-Tec? Medical terminology to what depth? Superficially or like a doctor?
Thank you.
office experience + Medical Terminology - Is it enough?
Hi everyone,
I've been wanting to take an MT course for quite some time, but still haven't managed to come up with enough money. So - I was wondering. Do you think for a beginning MT job in a hospital, would previous office experience plus courses in Medical Terminology be enough? Have any of you successfully done this?
Thanks for the help!

Might want to take a medical terminology class at a local college. Anyone nearby to mentor with? nm

Medical Transcription/Medical Coding
Hi,
I am a MT and can't find a job or pass employment test. So, I have to take one of the AAMT approved schools this time around and was thinking about Medical Coding but, not sure of this. Does anyone know if Medical Coding is harder than Medical Transcription to pass or is the stress more intense? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a bunch!

Medical Coder or Medical Transcription
I am so confused!! I took a Medical Transcription course and could not find a job and it was not one of the BIG 3. I am about ready to go with M-Tec Medical Transcription School. But, I have been reading post about Medical Coders and now I do not know which to choose. I do not want to make another mistake and choose the wrong school or the wrong career. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Take a medical terminology class - one class - at a community college (sm)
You don't have to sign up for the whole program, just take a medical terminology class and learn it inside and out. Get some medical terminology CDs and listen to them in your car. Find places with in-house transcriptionists to let you test and start out working in-house so that you will have help. It is very hard the first couple of months but gets much easier after that. I was a secretary, took anatomy and physiology and some other pre-nursing classes. Decided not to be a nurse, took a medical terminology class and that was it. Studied a lot, listened to tapes, went and tested, worked in house a few months. Have been doing this 12 years now.
Medical transcription is a lot more than just
typing. It depends on your knowledge of the material, how clear the dictation is, your knowledge of the material, how bad the doctor's accent is, your knowledge of the material, the quality of the recording, and, oh yes, your knowledge of the material. It also depends a lot on your knowledge of the material.
getting a Medical Transcription Job
I have taken a Medical Transcription course through PCDI but every job that I have applied for has wanted experience. How do you get experience if no one will hire you? Has anyone else had this problem? Please help...I'm so frustrated with the whole thing!!!
a medical transcription job
I finished a medical transcription class in June of 2005 and worked for a surgeon for 3 months. I was driving far for little hours. Can anyone tell me of a company that hires transcriptionists with very little experience
well, if you want to do medical transcription, then you want to get a job.
to get a job as a newbie is not as easy as you think. Some of the schools partner with companies who will take their newbies, with some additional specific training. So it increases your chances of getting a job - that is, if you want to work for the companies that partner with the school. Otherwise, you may want to go to the community college if they have a certificate program because at least you will have college credit towards your degree for your next job, when MT tanks.
Medical Transcription is
looked upon as a stay-at-home-Mom's dream job. A way to really make a great living while Junior is looking over your shoulder. The advertisements do state that this works very well for family life. Career Step has on the opening page "eliminate daycare". So, do you think that MT's are being mislead? If I had a toddler, I would jump at the chance to learn a way to make money at home all the while raising Junior. JMO.
Medical Transcription
Hi,
I know what you mean. The same thing happen to me and now the only thing you can do is enroll in another school. I am enrolling in M-Tec at the end of the month. I have researched and researched. This is one I choose.
Best of luck to you!

Enjoying medical transcription
I have been a medical Transcriptionist for 19 years, and thoroughly enjoy it!
I would be glad to talk with anyone about medical transcription.
Medical Coding or Transcription
I will be applying for online training soon and have noticed that the price of tuition for medical coding and medical transcription are not too far apart. I always thought that there was more opportunity and a higher income for medical transcription. Can anyone with experience in coding tell me how the average salary is for coding? Thank you in advance for any answers on this.
Med Secretary vs Medical Transcription
Your classes may have been excellent. I don't know anything about them. Most courses that teach all sorts of things and a couple of semesters of transcription don't teach what employers need you to know. It's certainly going to be helpfl in a medical secretarial course, but in a transcription job? Maybe, maybe not. You'll know when you've tested with employers, especialy the national employers that need people who can work independently from home.
So the differences would include, what kind of transcription dictaton did you transcribe? Were they quality training reports such as SUM or AAMT? How many of them did you do? If not SUM or AAMT, they probably were read or dictated by DJs or professonal actors, which is not the same as real dictation. That makes huge difference. Did you do hundreds of reports? Were they carefully checked by expert instructors who returned your work with helpful comments and recommendations along with the corrections? If students switched reports with other class members and graded each others' work, that would be another sign that it's geared more for secretarial rather than transcription. That's not bad. It just is intended for a different purpose. Well, let me rephrase that. It may have originally been intended to be a real medical transcription course, but most of those are folding across the country because their graduates are not able to find and keep good MT jobs. They can usually get jobs in small doctors' offices, but are not prepared to work where they are transcribing reports for hundreds of doctors from varying specialties.
the future of medical transcription
I don't know what to think! I see postings saying that this field is on its way out, and I see postings from people who are actively pursuing this field. I was really hoping to get into transcription, but I just don't know what to do at this point. Anyone have an opinion?
Medical Transcription NEWBIE
Where can a Newbie find work? Been looking everywhere....
Newbie medical transcription
I am new to medical transcription job search. When I applied in the net for MT from home jobs, eventhough I mentioned I do not have experience in USA they are asking for reference from 2 or 3 US companies after I passed their test. Can any one help me?
I have completed my Medical Transcription training in 2005. My other educational qualifications include Masters and Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Sciences. I have gained experience by transcribing hundreds of medical transcriptions in various medical specialties as well as transcriptions by physicians with foreign accents during the medical transcription course.
I have Microsoft Office, Windows XP, high-speed internet access and Internet Explorer. I am computer literate and proficient in Word. I have foot pedal.
Finding a Medical Transcription job
I should be working! I recently graduated with my diploma in medical transcription and am now sitting on my thumbs. How am I susposed to get the 2 - 3+ years experience everyone seems to want? I'm really discouraged. Have I wasted my time, money and energy?
Shapin Medical Transcription
Has anyone ever worked for Shapin Medical Transcription and, if so, is it a good company to work for.
Medical Transcription Vendors!!
Of course I am talking about medical transcription vendors. the people who provide services to the transcription companies...
Medical transcription vendors, who else?
There are many MT vendors like NYdox which provide transcription services to companies like medscribe. I am asking about them. How do you become a vendor??
Does anyone have any info on A to Z medical transcription course...m
My daughter and I were looking at this program where you train from home. They will contract you to work for them when you are finished. The ad says you can make $20 to $25 per hour working for them. It is owned by a lady named Deborah and it looks like they are based in AZ. The cost is $950.00. Any experience with them? All help is appreciated, thanks!
Welcome to the world of medical transcription.
Leave a blank where you can't hear something. Complete the report and then go back again and relisten and see if you can fill in the blanks then. If you get any feedback on blanks save it for future reference. Some docs that have the same physical exam, or same operation talk really fast. Even with a correct copy you may or may not be able to hear each word.
Medical transcription in Canada
You can still train at M-Tec while living in Canada. There are many Canadian students attending there!
AHP medical transcription program
Can someone that has graduated the medical transcription program through AHP tell me how they got through all the reports in section 3? I'm have trouble understanding the doctors with accents. How can I get through them and still keep my good grade?
Job Opportunities for Medical Transcription
Job opportunities for MTs are expected to grow faster than average for the next several years. Health care facilities continue to expand, and employment opportunities should expand with them.
Settings for work in this field are varied. Medical transcription job opportunities include working in hospitals or physician's offices. Government medical facilities provide another option for job seekers. Individuals looking for work in this field can also look in diagnostic laboratories, business support services, and transcription service offices. MT job opportunities can be found anywhere there is medical need.
Medical transcription employment is not restricted to offices. Many transcriptionists work from home . Some work as contracted freelancers and have varied hours. Others work as employees of hospitals or clinics who allow their transcriptionists to telecommute . The internet can be used to receive and send transcription, making it possible to work from any location.
An aging population requires more health care . More health care services coupled with the need for electronic documentation insures continued medical transcription job opportunities.
Pay for medical transcription jobs ranges from approximately $10.00 an hour to about $20.00 per hour. Pay can be based on an hourly rate or a production rate. Some medical transcription jobs are paid an hourly rate with bonuses for high production.
Medical transcription opportunities include the chance for advancement. After gaining experience, transcriptionists can move into editing or consulting. They can also teach.
If you are looking for a career in a growing field that offers the ability to advance or to work from home , consider medical transcription . It's difficult in this day to find careers that are not threatened by layoffs, but the f

Future of Medical Transcription due to outsourcing
I am seriously considering Medical Transcription and now wonder if this is the right path to take. I guess there is no way to have absolute certainty, but would like to feel secure about investing time and money in learning the field. I would like to hear from some MT's who are fresh in the field and hear their thoughts. Thanks

Welcome to the world of real medical transcription.
That's what a lot of doctors' dictation sounds like. You have to be able to handle it. That's why it's on the tests.

online medical transcription school
Do you know of any legit online medical transcription school that I can consider ? I really want to do this but seems like all of the schools out there cost an arm and a leg and can not afford to take out so much loan and be in such debt espcially it's not even paying much after I graduate.
Please help me if anyone know of a good, reasonable school I can apply to. Thank you so much.
Google 'practice medical transcription'
Your question got me wondering, so I checked out the site that the previous poster provided. Those programs were way to expensive for me, but I did find some others that were a little cheaper.
medical transcription service owner
MTSO is basically medical transcription
Check Job Seeker's Board. Also you can do a search on google. MTSO just means medical transcription service owner. That's all that means. MTSO could be a national (large), midsize, or small (some independent contractors will sub work out).
Medical Transcription--Fundamentals CD question
Anyone with this book? I am on the pulmonary unit transcribing assignment number five and I can't FOR THE LIFE of ME understand what the heck this doctor is slurring....er .....saying. Anyone know? Help?
Best Medical Transcription School that can be taken in Canada?
Hi I live in Canada and I'm interested in taking a Medical Transcription program online. I have heard that the best schools are Andrews, M-Tec, and Career Step but all these are from the US and I'm not to sure if I'll be able to take them coming from Canada. I have heard of schools from Canada such as ICS and Canscribe. Are these any good? I especially want to hear the opinions of ones who have taken the course through ICS because it's a lot less pricier than Canscribe but I'm not too sure of if the program is good.
Education and Internship at a Medical Transcription Company
I live in Austin, TX. A local medical transcription company has their own in-house training and internship. They started their own training because they couldn't find qualified people for their workload. The cost of the education and internship is $2,000. They then hire you as a contractor, if you get a 'B' in the class. Although they cannot guarantee work, they say they are very busy handling work from 5 area hospitals. Someone my sister knows works for them full-time and is happy.
I've also looked at the job requirements for the company Medquist. One suggestion they have is learning at a school based in Utah, Career Step. The education is online and through cassettes and books, not at the school itself. Their education costs around $1,500. Although you're not guaranteed a job at Medquist, you most likely will be considered because you trained at CareerStep.
I'd like your opinion about this. It seems you need to take a training or education course to learn medical transcription and at least 1 year of experience to get a job. I didn't see any problem with paying for training. Do you?
Thanks, amelia
I think it means medical transcription service outsourcing, or something like that. ; )

She can also take the classes and then she may or may not
pass the exam. Nothing is guaranteed either way. You're right about one thing, though, she's probably long gone. She must smarter than either one of us. Your attitude just makes so blasted upset. I didn't tell her not to take the classes. My initial response was not even to the OP. My response was to the person who stated that going from nursing to MT was impossible. One thing I do agree with you about is that COMPANIES don't want to hire nurses who have not been MTs before. I never suggested that either. I stated plainly that I worked in a local hospital before I EVER applied to a national. I think you need to go back and read ALL my posts before nitpicking what I say. Now, I hope you have a nice day.
Want to take classes
Hello
I am ready to sign up for classes but I have a few questions.
For one, I have looked at what would be considered the better schools, Andrews, MTEC, Career Step. But the problem for me is that the require at least $500 up front and I just don't have that kind of money right now.
My question is are the schools like Ashworth, Penn Foster any good? They will allow me to pay a small down payment and monthly payments. If I go to one of those schools will I be able to find work?
My last question is how easy is it to find work once I complete this course? I am a homemaker with 6 children. My husband is the sole provider and I really need to have money coming in right now. I am hoping this career choice will allow me to work from home and bring in extra funds.
Any answers will help.
Thanks.
