Selkirk College grads

I would like to know how many Selkirk College grads of the AMT program actually find work working online upon completion of their studies.
I simply cannot find a job. Am I the only Selkirk grad that cannot find work? Unfortunately, I have to work online, as there are no jobs in my community. It is very disappointing to spend a lot of money and still be unemployed!

MT Grads
Hi,
I am in the same boat. Recent grad that has applied to numerous companies-I think I am running out of options. Single parent with 2 children and stressed about where to go from here. May have to get a job doing something all together different just to get by. Feel I am running out of time and don't know what to think or what to do or where to go.
Jade
NO. Not all CS grads do. Those who want to be
do Spheris sample reports instead of the CareerStep advanced portion of the course. Most people who go to CareerStep do NOT go through the Spheris Training Track. I didn't.
M-Tec grads
Hi,
I am a little confused about the price on M-Tec School. Can anyone tell me how much it is with shipping and handling. I am interested in the Tier 1 payment plan.
Thanks,
Bob
New MT Grads.....
It looks Medquist is hiring for new MT Grads. I know there were some looking for a position to get their feet wet. They are currently looking for new grads at Medquist.
New grads
I am also a new grad of CS. There is a post on the job board for Another Medical Must, and they just hired me. I begin to train next week.It has taken me 6 months, but I finally have a chance :)
They seem to be hiring quite a few new people now, so apply to the job post.
Employment for New Grads
I am a recent grad. I graduated with a GPA of an A.
Is there any company that hires new grads?
So far, I have not found any.
Thank you.
employment for new grads
AMEN! While I am not a recruiter, I have run into that 2-year thing. I also agree with you about what CS consider 'experience'. Thanks for stating it!
Re: Recent Grads
Hi Amy,
I am the one who made the original post. I'm not so "upset and disgusted" anymore. :-) I thought I might give you a little advice on finding a job.
I think I said this in my post, but the way that I went about it was sending my resume to every company I could send it to. Even if the company stated they wanted two years of experience. My resume outlines my specific skills as an MT, i.e. computer, terminology, etc...and also outlines lists the specific courses I took in my college program.
There are literally hundereds of companies out there. I don't know if you are wanting to work from home or work in a hospital, clinic, or doctor's office, but I would do the same thing either way. I sent my resume to many, many companies.
If you are looking online and the company website offers testing for employment, take the test. That is how I ultimately landed the job I have now. The company I work for states they want 2 years of experience, but I tested for them and they hired me because I passed.
It is not easy to land that first job. You just have to be determined and keep at it. Since I got hired I have had 5 more job offers. It will happen for you too. Good luck!
MTEC Grads
I just finished my coursework at M-TEC. I can't wait for my test to be graded...and I'm itching to find a job. Before my test, I was 95%. I'm wondering if anyone knows what companies routinly hire from M-Tec so I can go looking now and not have to wait till I am able to access the COC on M-TEC's website?
Any new grads having better luck?
I graduated from one of the top 3 MT schools at the end of October with a 96% GPA. I have sent my resume, filled out applications, and taken tests to the point of losing count. The majority of the companies have not responded back (I still don't know if I've even passed or failed the tests I've taken), the few that have responded say they are not hiring at this time or not hiring new graduates or entry level or their company is reorganizing. I keep telling myself this is all part of the economic problems we are having, but I can’t help feel somewhat discouraged. I would appreciate anyone out there with some input about their job hunting. Thanks!
Hiring new grads
Does anyone have any information on which companies might be hiring new grads, or anyone willing to give a newbie a chance? I am having a hard time finding work, and I've been out of school for about 6 weeks. Is this unusual or am I expecting too much too soon? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hiring new grads
Check out mtbot.com. Click on the jobs and it will take you to a list of companies. The companies that hire newbies will state so, and just go from there.
Good Luck
M-tec , Career step Grads
I am looking for a good affordable MT school. From what I have read Andrews is top notch but expensive. Any graduates of M-Tec or Career Step please let me know if you were happy or not with your choice.
Companies hiring new grads
Hi Wanda,
I work for Transolutions and they have started hiring new grads. They are a fantastic company in my opinion.

No jobs for At-Home grads
I completed the At-Home course last Nov with a 95% GPA, and I still have not landed a job. I have sent out so many resumes and emails that I have lost count.
I even sent At-Home a letter asking if they would help me out, but their only response was that most MT's seek employment through the Internet; that's it. I don't know what they mean by 'graduate assistance.'
I have discovered through other MT message boards that the majority of At-Home grads cannot even get their foot in the door because of the lack of training/education. Even employers have posted statements that they too don't hire At-Home grads. If I don't find work soon I may have to study again with one of the top '3' schools that I've heard so much about.
I would never recommend this school to anyone!
Spheris will hire grads
from Career Step without even making them take an employment test. There are many other large nationals who allow grads from CS, M-Tec and especially Andrews to take their employment test, and if they pass, they are hired WITHOUT 2 years experience.
Don't call it BS if you don't know what you are talking about.
ANYONE will hire grads. That's not the issue...
poster was trying to say a graduate of the top 3 is equivalent in the job market to someone with 2 years experience.
also not just ANY career step grads...
you have to have the special Spheris training, which I might add, puts another two months on your training period. Employment is not guaranteed. By the way, are you a salesperson for Career Step, perchance? Because I think you really misrepresented the situation. Especially here on an NEW MT board.
Because grads of some schools are not having those problems
Some are doing very well. They actually teach. They charge for their services, but they actually provide an education in return. That's the way it's supposed to be. The problem is when students want to take the easy way out. They invite unscrupulous people to take advantage of them. Some of the poor schools are glad to do that, over and over again.
calling all M-Tec students/grads...
How many hours a week did it take any of you to complete the Tier 1-Premier program in 12 months or LESS? Is it possible to still work 30 hrs/wk and do this?
From my experience in working with grads from both -
PLease do not make your decision based on one school sounding like you can get through it faster than the other. I used to perform QA duties and had the opportunity to work with grads from both schools. The schools both produce excellent MTs. I would have to say, and this is only MY opinion from the grads we hired, that the grads from M-Tec had better ears and the ones from Andrews seemed to have more book knowledge overall. I chose M-TEC because I liked how everyone sounded on the message boards. Kathy and Susan were the only instructors when I attended, and both of them are super nice and were (and still are!) willing to answer just about any question I came up with. Call up both schools and chat with whoever answers the phone and go with your gut. :-) Remember, you are only going to get what you put into any school. Good luck in which ever one you choose!
Night Hours for New Grads?
Hi,
Are new graduates from MT programs like M-Tec or CS offered night hours, any evening p/t or f/t jobs?
Thanks
I think most of the new grads are having a hard time.
I still haven't found a job myself, and I graduated this May. I would go through your local phone book and start calling all of the transcription companies if you haven't already. Call the hospitals, too. Start applying everywhere. MTdaily has a list of companies and most of the companies have a carreer or job opportunity link on how to apply. I know how frustrating it can be. I am actually considering switching to legal transcription.
Some of us CS grads are very successful, but still think CS is inferior
to Andrews and M-TEC. Just my opinion, of course.
Your school should be able to tell you who hires their grads. -sm

who hires new grads with vista?
I am a new grad looking for an at home position. I was accepted with a company, but they are not compatible with Vista. Does anyone know of another ? Thanks!
New Grads and students beware
DO NOT WORK FOR TOTH TRANSCRIPTION. They will not pay you, and they prey on new grads. There have been MANY people come forward claiming the same thing. They are a complete scam. Take my warning, do not work for them.
I'm a trainer at my Job and I get Allied grads
Lynette,
I've found the key to making it work for Allied grads is to follow up with a good internship and job training placement.
We do this at our company and we have Allied grads who work out fine. What they seem to need is 2 to 3 more months of hands on training to be ready to produce valuable work.
There is no reason to give up or quit and spend $3400 with Andrews to be able to retake APT (anatomy, physiology, terminology). And I believe Allied uses the SUM material for Beginning Med Typing- SUM has been around for decades I think.
A recent trainee of mine went to Allied and followed up with internship at Med Workshops. The internship made it happen for her. She is now doing fine and going on 1-1/2 yrs employed with us.
I want to go a little further on this subject:
Tuition is going to have to go down in the current economic climate. $3400 and up for tuition is just too steep for most people. Even the best schools will be hit hard by the reduction in discretionary spending.
First, I'm not one of the "little grads" I'm not their grad at all.
Just because for many years anyone who wanted could learn to be an MT from their next door neighbor, that doesn't mean that's the way it is today. I think too many MTs are just afraid of competition from well-trained MTs, who with a good education and a couple of years' experience will be better MTs than they ever will. I have seen MTs claim to have 20+ years' experience, and they make ridiculous errors and don't even care - "That's they way I've always done it!" I'm talking about the way things are today, not back when anyone who could type could be an MT, and could teach anyone else to be an MT.
Spheris hires their grads

attn. M-TEC and Andrews grads
Did any of you complete the program but were unable to get a job afterward? Does anyone know how many people enroll but fail to successfully complete these programs?
It's better to do it through a college, you will have more help
instead of totally floundering around by yourself, never sure if you are doing it correctly or not.
If the college CS course costs more than Andrews or M-TEC, I'd go with one of those instead. But CS through college is definitely better than just CS alone.
The grads they produce are of equal caliber.

Which companies are best to hire Andrews grads
TIA
I don't pay them. Employers test our grads and hire them if they do well
I don't pay them. Employers test our grads and hire them if they do well. I appreciate the fact that they are kind enough to let our graduates test for them, but I don't give them any money. None. Zero. Zilch. Nothing. Thanks for asking so that I have the opportunity to make that very clear.
There is a reason employers are scrambling to get these grads!
Unlike people who have years of experience typing for a few docs and little medical knowledge, these grads have the equivalent of 2 years of experience AND understand what they are typing. You go right on hiring those not associated with the Top 3 - just leaves better pickings for the rest of us!
Survey for recent MT grads with up to 1-2 years
experience.
I work for a company who is presently looking at starting at MT program with an internship and then a job offer when over. I would like your responses in what could have made your program better or if you feel there was anything bad about it and what that was. If you would like to respond, please email or feel free of course to post here. At this time, I am not able to provide the company name that is starting this program, but I can tell you we are going to be working to make it the best possible, and with your help be able to offer a better program to future MT students. Thanks in advance!
Not much money to be made for new grads at MedQuist.
Guess it is pretty profitable to get rid of experienced MTs and then fill their spots with new grads at half the rate.
I've seen many, many Allied grads who can't find a job. sm
I also know many people who hire MTs who do employment testing, and "most" Allied MTs can't pass the employment tests. That's why many companies just say they require 2 years' experience and won't even test Allied grads.
Brighton College
I am considering taking courses through Brighton College or MTEC. Any advice?
I went to a Community College
/
I went to a local college here.. and now...
I started off with $19/h plus incentive. Now, I make $22/h plus incentive at a local hospital. Yes it can be done.
MT as instructors in College
I attend a College here in BC, Canada and our instructor is a MT in a Surgical office by day and she teaches at night at college! She likes the schedule for her family and really enjoys teaching.
Not all of them! Community College
can be great if you find one with a well rounded program. I went to a CC and was hired by a national before I even graduated. Don't knock community colleges. There are some that have really great programs. You just have to do your research.
college credits
I would recommend that you check with the college you might plan to attend in the future to see if your credits would actually transfer. I had the experience of taking a course at the college but found that all my MT courses at the community college were listed under continuing education or something. My "credits" were not transferrable to another program or school. In other words, not all credits are accepted by all schools. Check into that before you go to far.
there is a Community college in BC . . .
That partners with the CanScribe program I think, their fees might be different or that way you might qualify for some financial aid $ from the Canadian gov't based on income level, worker retraining, displaced homemaker, etc. It's online so you don' have to be there. Basically what I'm doing on the other side of the border through EvCC. I forget which college it is but it is on the Career Step Canadian info link. Good luck!
How about seeing what's available thru your local college? Might be able to take

community college
You may want to research Career Step through one of the community colleges that offer the program. Some colleges offer financial aid and instructors. It seems to be worth looking into.
Yes, Community college is better
I'm doing the CS program through Everett community college and I would definitly say it is better than doing CS alone. I have instructors I can email/call at anytime if I need help, plus, you get more assistance that way!
comm. college
I'm new to this forum and am trying to find a good program. I've been accepted at a community college but tey aren't very efficient in returning phone calls or emails. It's like after they answer you one time they don't want to be bothered by you anymore. They refuse to answer certain questions , ie, if they train in any specialty fields. I've looked into M Tec and the Bright Start program They both sound good but the AHDI and an MT company I spoke with have never heard of them. Advise?
