Where to train
Everyone will have their own idea of what works best for them as far as training. Some will prefer an online training course, while others prefer a community college. The truth is you will have to do a lot of research to find which works best for you. A good place to start is the American Association For Medical Transcription website http://www.aamt.org where they have a check off sheet of what to look for in a school. Medical transcription is far from being obsolete, and there are plenty of good jobs for a well-trained MT, but you have to be careful when choosing your training to help you with job options later on.

As a newbie in the MT field, I do not want to disappoint any one of my trainers. They have been wonderful, but sometimes I fear my inexperience must frustrate them to the point of tears themselves. I apologize and thank all those people out there who take the time to train us. I love the MT field. I love the work. I love to learn. I am not frightened by difficult dictators or “new to my ears” ESL. I just want to express my gratitude to you seasoned MT’s out there who give us a chance. The money is not important right now, with time and experience I know it will come.
To all the newbies out there who have not yet received employment, keep your chin up, and pray that you get a wonderful trainer.
Where to train?
I am a sahm looking for a way to work at home and be able to make a respectable wage.
What exactly does it take to get into MT and which school is the best? There is an online class close to where we live. It's $2300 and takes about 18 months (this is what I was told) to get through it.

The best place to train is
in house at a hospital or clinic - honestly. Second best is a reputable online company but you still will need mentoring after you graduate - honestly. Best online schools in my opinion are CAI, Careerstep, Andrews.
You need to train for this job. Nursing alone won't cut it.

Wanting to train in MT
Hi all...I am here seeking information/advice on training to be an MT. I currently have an AAS in Radiology and have been a registered technologist in both Radiography and CT [RT(R)(CT)(ARRT)] for 5 1/2 years now, as well as being registry-eligible in Mammography. I worked in a very busy hospital radiology department and have an extensive working knowledge of all modalities, including MR, Sono, and Nuc Med, as well as PACS, CR/DR, Meditech, Dictophone, and Teleradiography. Last year, I had to stop working in the clinical setting because of a back injury, and that time my husband encouraged me to stay at home with the children. I however am going mad without working, and miss being in the radiology/medical field. Because my health will no longer permit me to work in the clinical setting, I have been looking into the medical transcription field with hopes that I could do radiology transcription. I feel that I have a broad enough understanding of medical terminology, especially in radiology, to begin a training program. I also have experience working with foreign radiologists, our chief radiologist was Phillepeno and was very hard to understand. Does this sound like a feasible opportunity for me? I am definitely not looking for a get rich quick deal and realize that it will take lots of hard work, dedication, and patience. I would just like to know that it would be worth the cost of the program and the time away from my family. I am looking into the online program through Brighton College.

another place to look is insurance companies. companies that specialize in workman's comp and malpractice also employ medical transcriptionists. podiatrists and chiropractors hire transcriptionists. physical therapy facilities hire transcriptionists. in this area, nursing homes hire transcriptionists, assisted living facilities hire transcriptionists. i learned medical terminology when i was hired as a unit secretary in a hospital. this allowed me to become familiar with doctors in the area, preps for tests, drugs.

I started out with either 6 or 6.5 per line and wasnt upset because that is what I noticed to be the average, but I have gotten a raise since then and the company I work with has a great incentive program. But again, I am not one of those people who thinks I should be getting paid 8 or 9 cpl starting out. I am happy with my pay for now. I think its on target.

And really, she could be a little more appreciative considering the fact that we, the MTs, are picking up her expenses for office space, utilities, computers, office furniture, supplies, software, etc. I totally get the point about following instructions and spellchecking, but there's no need to SCREAM about it with her rude attitude.
WHAT? Only a few rip-off places charge a fee.

had one co. offer
3 c per minute dictation and another one for 2 c per line so that offer is better than what I had as a newbie. What was worse was that I got all the bad dictations, i.e., lots of static and purely poor dictators (the kind who mumbles). Take that for experience and then move on once you get your feel.

There are companies that offer
"internships," but a lot of them are scams. If any company requires you to pay $$ upfront or to buy equiptment/software from them you can be sure they are a scam. If in doubt ask about them here. You can post your resume on the various free job boards and you may get a response from a company who might not post ads on the boards.

this link to HPI's website. They have helpful books and other resources. I don't work for them, but I like their Radiology Imaging Words and Phrases book and some others.
That's why companies offer less and less.
They know newbies will take whatever the company offers for experience. Don't you think you're worth more than that? I turned down every offer that was less than 8 cpl after I graduated. It's insulting yet fruitful because of "experience."
NO courses can offer certification
Just to clarify, there are no courses which can offer "certification" in medical transcription, so there aren't any "certification courses."
If you want certification, you have to take the AAMT certification examination, which, if you pass, will grant the CMT certification.
Other than that, you can take a course which will give you a "certificate of completion." And that is only worth the price of a piece of paper. Having that piece of paper is not what will get you a job.
What gets you a job is the ability to transcribe well enough that an employer doesn't have to train you all over again.
And then you have to keep it, so the transcription skills you pick up in school had better be top-notch or you'll be wishing you had just gotten a job at MacDonald's.

New MT needs advice on at home job offer...
Hi, I am a new Medical Transcriptionist and I need a little advice. I received a job offer through CompuSystems, Inc. Has anyone heard of them? They offered me 6 cents per line transcribed. They also told me I needed a voice recognition device...what is this? What does an "Independent Contractor" involve exactly? Is 6 cents per line good for new MTs? I know this is alot...I apologize...just need some advice... 
A footpedal is around $79, so if they offer one it sounds good to me.

MTEC does offer financial assistance.
While MTEC is expensive it is also one of the top 2 MT schools out there. You get what you pay for. Also, they do accept financial aid. Check out their site, they have a person on staff that handles situations just like yours!

Accredited basically means they offer financial aid. Did you mean AAMT-Approved?
If it's an AAMT-approved school, you won't have a problem. Schools that provide financial aid are required to be accredited. That means their financial records are reviewed to make sure the government's money is being handled right. They aren't evaluating the value of the course or qualifications of the course to teach medical transcription.

I just wanted to let you know that it is possible for a new MT to get a job with a national company. I did it, and I just graduated in December. Just keep putting out those resumes and testing. It will happen!! God bless!

Yes, sadly, everyone has heard of AHP, as well as the miseries their graduates go through trying to find a job. No major employer, to our knowledge, will waive the experience requirements for them. They don't even get an opportunity to take employment tests.
