CS online training
Hey all you MTs. My wife started the classes with CS about a month and a half ago, and I will say we were really nervous about it at first also...The staff is really professional, and they have a very competitive rate for their schooling. WHat I WILL say is this:
Online schooling for any career choice is daunting. I went to Law school online, and it SINKS when you have a question to ask and nobody to ask in person. It is also very easy to ignore the schoolbooks and just watch tv or sleep in.
As with anything, its all about what you put into it. Career Step has gotten a lot of rave reviews from alumni, so I wouldnt worry about how good of a school it is. You should be more cautious about the MT employers out there lately!
Career Step Online training
Self-motivated is a rather limp way to describe the course. There is no instructor support, nor is anything except the final graded by a human being.
I think you have to be a bit more than self-motivated. If you don't know wether something is right or wrong a computer graded response won't help you learn.
Just an observation from a
student who finished the course.
Can someone tell me what the online schools
Career Step, M-Tech, Andrews - I have a family member who is interested in getting her daughter directed on a career path (she's 18). I'm not so sure MT is for her, but I'd like to at least give her some basic info. So, how much do these programs cost and how long do they take?
Thanks!
MT Online Schools
I am looking for an online school for MT. Forgive my ignorance about this. I have no clue where to start.
Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.
Online MT schools??
Hi.
I just signed up for Allied MT School. Have any of you graduated from there, and did you like it? Also, did you have any problem getting a job after graduating? I am a bit discouraged with some of the negative reviews.
Thank you.
Online Schools and loans
For those of you checking out schools online. Here is a site I found interesting. Worth browsing. www.ripoffreport.com
I do agree that these online schools are misleading...
newbies into thinking they will be working from home from day 1.
Some people claim it can be done/they are doing it, but then I see posts on the Word Help board where an obvious newb is stumped by the most simple/basic things, such as "systolic ejection murmur." I cringe inside when I see this and I really feel bad for the gal, drifting all alone out there. I know I personally never could have worked at home solo straight out of the shoot, nor could any of the really good long-timers I work with.
I don't know what the solution is in your situation, but I just wanted to let people know about searching the hospital jobs boards. The 3 hospitals in my area all have in-house transcription and post only on those boards (no advertising in the paper or online), and it was a similar situation when I lived in another city as well. Maybe this will help someone who is reading this.
Another suggestion might be taking a job at a local MT service doing clerical-type work and answering phones, etc. Get your foot in the door, show the owner that you are smart, have excellent grammar skills, and are dead serious about this. While you are there, study every transcribed report that comes across your desk to see how an experienced MT writes the blood gasses and see that a lot of people have a 2/6 systolic ejection murmur listed in the heart portion of the physical exam. I actually took a job as a tumor registrar (ugh) in medical records when I was trying to get started, and all I did all day long was read/study transcribed reports.
I do wish the best for you. I know things are particularly tough in Michigan.
Schools and Training.
I'm trying to decide what to do as far as getting more training. I have recieved info from Career Step this school looks the best to me so far. I spent around 6 Thousand for a Program at TechSkills. I graduated last nov. I haven't been able to find work or pass any companies tests =( I really feel that horrible school did nothing for me except burn a whole in my pocket. I'm looking for schools that aren't too expensive or offer internships or something!
MT schools / training
I am seriously considering a career as an MT. I have zero medical experience. For the past ten years, I have worked as an Executive Assistant. I feel that it is time for a career change, as I am no longer happy with what I am doing. With that being said, I thought perhaps I wanted to do broadcast captioning, high demand, good pay and flexability. So, without really doing any research, I jumped into the first school that came up when I did a Google search. It was a seven month course and I graduated this past December. The course itself was $15,000. It wasn't a steno thery based course, it was voice recognition. I made a huge mistake by not looking into the school and the other options that were out there and am now kicking myself in the butt for it because we spent so much money on it. Sorry this is so long, but I am getting there (to my point and questions). The requirements for graduation is that you had to pass the final at 180 words per minute at 95% accuracy. What they didn't tell you and I failed to research this is that in the real world of broadcast captioning, the employers require at least 225 words per minute at 98.5% accuracy. So the school did not prepare me to go out and be gainfully employed upon graduation.
Do I need prior medical experience in order to become a succesfull MT?
After having learned the hard way, I have looked into many MT schools, researching for almost two weeks now. I am leaning towards Career Step. I would very much appreciate hearing from somebody who has taken thier course, or if I should go with somebody else, and why.
I just want to be ready to be gainfully employed upon graduation.
And I have to build my case to my husband as to why we should spend more money on my education.
Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
Years ago none of us needed training and there were no schools
It's a different world. You need as many skills as you can get. Some of the worst MTs I've ever seen came from other health occupations, RNs particularly although some are good, and yes, even EMTs! I know some EMTs who can't even type, much less spell or proofread. If I needed an EMT though, I would be sure to call for them because I'll bet they were good at that. I hope so!
Forget "approved" schools. AAMT set the criteria, then approved schools that didn't meet i
Stick with Andrews or M-Tec (both of which happen to be "approved") but forget about any others, they are not worth it.
best MT online course
CanScribe - they provide you with books and supplies, as well as programming and guarantee you a job at the end of it. Agencies know that a graduate of CanScribe is worth a chance.
online vs local job
Where I live the local votech school has a very high placement rate and if I wanted to work in house, I would start by taking their MT course. My local school's course is far from complete though, and there is no way a national company would hire me with just that course and no experience.
I have no idea what the local employers would think about an online program. We're kind of in the sticks and they really rely on the local tech school to pump out grads that can do the work the local companies need them to do. Its practically tailored to the needs of the local economy.
I'm going with an online program because I want to be sure I can gain employment, and I want thorough training.
Not sure how much this helps.
my experience in online MT course
Hello everyone,
Just thought the information on my website will be helpful and/or interesting to anyone who is thinking of trying medical transcription cource.
it's here
http://www.volkovs.com/family/julia/default.aspx?p=mt
Considering that most colleges are going online
this advice doesn't hold water. It doesn't make any difference what format the program takes.
I took their online test on 8/21 and just
heard back from them yesterday. The lady I talked to there told me that she is really behind on contacting people. When did you apply with them?
help for finding right online course
I have tried to get info on online courses and it is very hard, since i have no other MT friend to talk to. I was told to take courses from Ashworth(formerly PCDI) Does anyone know about this one? Seems like everywhere i turn, Career Step is always the most talked about. I realise they all have pros and cons but someone please help!!! Want to do at home training online. Had a year experience of part-time transcribing and did fine. Barely told what to do, but completed it anyway. I've had EXPERIENCE THE HARD WAY by doing this. Thanks
online quizzes
It's important to keep studying and practicing right up until you land the job you studied and worked so hard for. Time away from your studies will nevertheless, leave some cobwebs in your mental attic.
I've started to assemble some online quizzes (free) so students can keep learning. It's so new in fact, I have one done. lol But I intend to put some more out there if the response is good. I need a beginner and one who will test this out with me and for me. It would be nice for the others if we can get this in the right direction.
visit: www.gotranscribe.com and click on MT Learning Studio for instructions.
I'd appreciate it and so would some of the others if it works as I think it could.

AHDI online
I don't know if this would help or not. I think they would be your best bet at finding your answer 100%.
online testing
at focusinfomatics.com They have online testing specifically for new people, and if you do well enough they will invite you into their training program.
You can always order it online....

Online Externship
I am a transcription student looking for an online company that offers an externship. I have to complete an externship in order to graduate, but need to do so online, and am having trouble finding an online company that would be willing to take me in. I have searched for transcription companies, but have not found any that advertise any externship opportunities. Are there any companies offering online externships?
Online Course suggestion
Hi,
Can you please suggest me online MT course which is not expensive.
Thanks & Regards
online test
Don't feel bad - I've done transcription for over 25 years, had a CMT for 15 of those years... took an online test with MRC (Medical Records Corporation). I did the test, waited for two whole weeks... they never got back to me until I asked them what the hel_ was going on and they told me I failed the test - would someone explain that to me? My audit score for the company that I am currently working for, is 97-98........
online tests
I also took the Medquist exam after they sent me an email requesting that I take it. I felt very confident that I did well but was told I did not pass. They said to take it again in three months, which is now.... and now I have no confidence at all to do it.

Online that hire newbies
Does anyone have any resources for new 'graduates' of home study/unpaid internship training in transcription to find online companies that hire newbies to work from home? Thanks for your help! :)
Last night on Lifetime was an online....sm
Last night on the Lifetime Channel was a 2006 movie called Fatal Desire with Anne Heche and Eric Roberts and it was just about this, meeting online......it was a good movie...just repetitive to me about how these bad things do happen online and the ending was AWFULLY shallow and dumb, but the movie, in general, was a true story about this woman named Tanya Sullivan who ended up with a life sentence in jail......
financial aid for MT online school
I am currently pursuing a career in medical transcription. I have been searching the net for over six months for an online course. I have applied to Fafsa "Pell Grant" for many schools which offer the online transcription course. Unfortunately all of the courses are listerd under "continuing education" which apparently is not covered by federal funds. At this time I am unable to pay for my education, but it is something I want badly. If anyone out there knows of any online MT schooling that can covered by financial aid, please let me know. Also, if anyone knows of any funding that is available for this course, that would help me tremedously.
Kaplan & U of Phoenix online?
Anyone have any opinions, hear anything about these two online MT training programs?
I already have an Associate's so it would be nice to get a BA from U of Phoenix. I haven't received their info pkt yet.
Thanks for any info. -MKJ
Try a good online school -
I graduated from M-Tec in 2001, had numerous offers to test before my actual graduation, passed all the tests I took (I believe it was 4),and had a job before I even had my diploma in my hand. I have been happily employed at home doing acute care ever since! Check them out! :-)
online testing question
I can ace the objective parts of online tests, but when I get to the transcription part, I'm never sure whether they want you to just type everything verbatim--even if the dictator stumbles over words, corrects himself/herself mid-sentence, or really needs some punctuation for clarity's sake--or if they do, in fact, want you to edit "on the fly." Any advice is appreciated. Thanks very much!
local or online school?
I live in Spokane, WA, and I'm considering studying MT
to become a transcriptionist. I am very much attracted to the idea of studying at home at my own pace. I am deciding
between 3 distance learning schools:
1. Andrews 2. M-Tec 3. Career Step
I have read that Andrews and M-Tec are very good (both
cost under $4,000) and that Career Step doesn't prepare one well for the MT profession (costs under $2,000).
After I spoke to a former student at the Spokane
Community College MT program she advised that she wouldn't spend more than $1,500 on the MT training and strongly recommended Spokane Community College.
Here's my dilemma:
The SCC program takes 4 quarters. If I signed up on January 3, 2008, I would be done at the end of 2008 - the program takes the whole calendar year.
The online options are self-paced, and because I only work part-time, I imagine I would be done a lot sooner, maybe in 6 months.
The former student at the SCC also explained that if I attend a local program = Spokane CC, I will have a much better chance of getting a job locally.
However, at this point in time I don't know if I will be staying in Spokane for the foreseeable future (it depends on my husband's job situation) and might be moving out of Spokane sometime at the second half of 2008.
I have a Master's degree in English. I'm mentioning this because I know a good portion of a MT program is language study.
Would you please give me advice on what to do? Take the Spokane Community College course or one of the expensive online options?
Thank you very much.
trouble with online tests?
Anyone else applied to Medquist or FocusInfomatics and have trouble passing the test?? I cannot figure out why I did not pass the transcription test and they can't tell me...just hoping I'm not alone...thanks
Look online and apply daily! sm...
Looking for MT job postings online is probably the quickest way to find out who is hiring. Most local newspapers are also now online. Don't forget about networking with your graduate peers!
I think timing plays a huge role in getting that first MT job. Find out who is hiring and apply on a daily basis! Job hunting is a full-time job that pays off in a huge way!
Career Step Online Traning
I am seeking an at home MT training couse that would ultimately allow me to work from home once completed. I was hoping to hear from anyone who has taken the Career Step online training course, and if so, how would you rate the program? Did you find it somewhat easy or difficult in securing at-home employment? Or, Is there another online training course that you would recommend over Career Step? Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated!
Community college course or online? Your opinions? sm:)
Hi. I'm new to the board, and would like your opinions on which you think is a better education: local community college here which offers an MT certification course (3 semesters in length) or online with either CS or M-Tec?
I am self disciplined, but still may stay more focused if I have deadlines, and classes to go to. I'm not sure...
Have any of you found more value in one choice or another? Thanks in advance for your time/input! :) Anne
I would search several companies that have online testing
There are plenty of them. You do not have to have years of experience transcribing, but will have an opportunity to show them what you are capable of.
When taking the online test with companies...
...that offer it, is it acceptable to use reference materials. I didn't see anywhere on the page that I couldn't. Just askin'.
No, I was trying to find the article online because I don't have time
to scan it into my computer. I have to finish working at my "real" job because the trick or treaters are here already.
There are several free typing sites online.
goodtyping.com is one of them I know. It uses a series of typing tests to improve on quality and speed. It helped me.
online medical transcription school
Do you know of any legit online medical transcription school that I can consider ? I really want to do this but seems like all of the schools out there cost an arm and a leg and can not afford to take out so much loan and be in such debt espcially it's not even paying much after I graduate.
Please help me if anyone know of a good, reasonable school I can apply to. Thank you so much.
Career Step online benefits
There are partnership training programs in place with employers such as Spheris and Focus Infomatics to place you in a job upon graduation that are only available for the online CS course ONLY.
the word newbie originated by being new online
it is not a bad thing at all, just means someone is new is all...........it's actually an endearing term...

I Agree About a GOOD Online School
Unfortunately, a lot of companies look at where you went to school and not what you know. Andrews and M-Tec are great schools and are popular, and a lot of companies want graduates from those 2 schools. I went with EvCC and received a great education but no one wanted to give me a chance because the school's not well known. Finally, 2 places did and they realized that I know my stuff and am a hard worker. If you're going to spend the extra money, Andrews and M-Tec are both promising.
You can take a test at Focus online for newbies
HELP someone, I applied online to MedQuist, MedScribe and MT Recruiters..what do you know about
I just finished school this summer and passed all my requirements for MT...I applied to these online companies and wasn't real sure if they were reputable. I've heard from previous students about companies that don't pay on time and are a little shady. How can I know if I apply to online MT work at home companies if they are OK? Better Business Bureau?
I was going to post my resume on Monster.com. Can anyone tell me if that would be a good decision?
I would appreciate any and all feedback.
Dorland's available online for free at www.onelook.com along with other dictionaries. NM

Best way to start working immediately after grad is Andrews School or M-TEC online. nm

If you got your training from one of the
schools recognized by employers to turn out job-ready MTs, in most cases, the two-year-experience requirement will be waived. Also, those schools will work with you to help you with job placement. In any event, your school. whichever one it was, should be helping you with job placement. If the course was designed to make you employable, your school should know for which employers you are prepared to work. Good luck to you.
