One main problem with AutoCorrect is that the normal.dot and .acl files

Posted By: they are stored in corrupt easily. (sm) on 2006-06-24

If you're going to rely on AutoCorrect as your Expander utility, make sure you back up your normal.dot and .acl files regularly. If the files become corrupt (and with Word it's usually just a matter of time), you will lose all your AutoCorrect and AutoText entries, macros, and some other customizations.

AutoCorrect

Hey there,

I used to use Smartype as my former company provided it but it does not work properly with Word 2003.  What I do is I use the AutoCorrect feature that comes with Word.  It will take some time to input your own but it works fine.  Here's some quick instructions:

Click Tools>AutoCorrectOptions (or Alt-T, A on keyboard if you are a mouse hater like me).

Select AutoCorrect tab.  In Replace box type your abbreviation or shorthand.  In the With box type the expanded form.  For example for coronary artery disease, I put cade in the replace box.  Then click OK.  Next time you need to type this, just type cade and hit spacebar and it will expand for you.  Bear in mind that you need to be careful of what you put there in case some hospital down the line doesn't want you to expand slang like bicarb for bicarbonate so my expansion for that is bicarbx.  Hope this helps!

What about autocorrect? nm

autocorrect saves me!
I type between 60-70 wpm depending on the copy difficulty. I do clinic notes (yep I know they are easier) and get about 150-200 lph, and have been at this for about 3.5 mos now. I was creeping up some more, but I got switched to a different account and am working on building up expansions and templates for that now. Without autocorrect I would be quite slow. Make sure what you create is instinctual for you or follows a system, and don't create too many at once, or you may forget them. Good luck.
autocorrect vs autotext vs macros

Would like opinions on why people use one over the other.  Just got into this business and i'm mostly using autotext.  I have heard a lot of talk about macros but that they are hard (or is it time consuming) to do.

Thanks.

3 main books I use are

Quick Look Drug Book
Stedman's Abbreviations & Acronyms
Book of Style

I have the full Stedman's line, but use those 3 books every day; the others are used only on occasion.
new MTs -- see angry MT on main board and never

NEVER work for free to get your foot in the door.  No company worth working for will require that.  You may have a hard time getting that first job -- but think enough of yourself, your qualities, your training to expect a fair wage for services performed.  I started 30 years ago in the office with 2 podiatric surgeons.  Thought i'd never use most of the terminology i learned: wrong!   Start whereever you can, it may not be at home, but the upside to that is that you may have a stronger foundation and less stress when you do bring your job home.  Good luck!

I have 2 main accounts with a scattering
of 3-4 others. I'm not one ot give up easily, but, it seems like they change the rules quite often. It's my pure stubborness that keeps me going. I really do hate defeat. Thanks to everyone for their words of wisdom.
There is a thread on the Main Board
There is also a lot of info if you search for AIM or Allstate.
Read the awful comments about SoftScript on the Main board! nm

NORMAL'S
What are normals? When someone says I have worked on my normals for a few years, and I am not giving them to another company to use. I am just starting out, and I was just curious.
Thanks!

Is this normal?

I am fairly new to transcribing and on my job we are in charge of keeping track of the doctor's dictation. If they are late, we have to notify them and keep notifying them until they do it or else they are fined. One of my doctors is really bad and it takes me a lot of time to track her dictation to see if she is doing it or not. I get paid by production and feel this is not my job when she is so bad.

What's your input? Thanks.

Is this normal
Yes, we bring up the doctor's schedules every day and mark off as we do them. If there are any outstanding, we send a notice to them. They don't like it and I get caught in between the doctor and the clinic with it. I have to send them a note every week until they do their dictation. Like I said, it is very time consuming with the one and my production suffers. Just wondering if it was normal for the profession to do this. Wish I could just key and not have to take care of the doctor. Thanks for your input.
Yes, that's normal. By law they need 2 forms of ID. sm
Every company I've worked for has needed this. They keep it on file as proof that you're legally able to work in the U.S.
I'm a newbie, is this normal?
I have been working for Focus Infomatics for 2 months. They "love to hire newbies" but do zero training and expect us to be on DSP status within 1 week. I am at the point where they have given me one more week but without offering any assistance on training or mentoring. I was just wondering if this is normal behavior for other transcription companies out there and also which companies are good to work for.  All of the managers and editors at Focus are in India and are difficult to speak with. Thanks!
It is normal to be slow at first
I mostly edit VR reports with a few standard thrown in on acute care and ER reports. When I first started, I might have made 500 lines on a good day. Now I generally get 1200-1600 and have been doing this for 1-1/2 years. Once in a while though, I will have a run of difficult speakers and wind up with fewer lines on those days. So, I think it is safe to say we all can have a bad day sometimes.

Rest assured, as a new MT your speed and confidence will grow. When I first started, I found myself looking up a lot more than I ever thought I would have to. Of course, I still find the need to research, but not on every report.

My best suggestion for increasing speed is to try to get where you can read (and comprehend) along with the speaker. That was hard for me at first because I guess my mind was filling in errors at times and I would have to catch them on proofing, but I found slowing down the dictation helped until I got used to the speaker's voice.

I don't think anyone can really tell you exactly how many lines you should be getting right now without knowing what kind of account and difficulty of speakers you have because some accounts and speakers are easier/more difficult than others. Most of us start off rather slow and build from there. Accuracy is extraordinarily important and is key to your success.

I wish you success. God Bless.
Is it normal for companies not to pay you

when they train you on their software?  After all it is suppose to take 3 hours. TIA

Never heard of an MT doing this. Probably not in our normal job description!
nm
No, it's not normal. What atrocious conduct!! Take it as a loss and read the newbies

most use wav files
Yes, there are programs that are used to play these files with a foot pedal. I am using DSS by Olympus and it plays both .dss and .wav files. There are companies that let you use their own programs.

I agree with you that the voice files they usually use for testing just SUCKS. I have tried using Realplayer and Media Player before but it is hard without the foot pedal.
I NEED WAVE FILES

Dear M.Ts.

I am in need of M.T. Wave files to improve my skill.  If any body is willing may mail me.

Playing WAV Files
I am a new MT and the company that I work for does not offer trouble shooting.  When I download a wav file from their FTP site, it will not download into express scribe or bytescribe, in which I have both set up to play wav.  I do not have trouble downloading anyother sound files, just the wav.  I also have in the past been able to play wav files in my express scribe, just not from this company's FTP site.  Does anyone know of something that could cause this and how I could fix this problem?  Thanks!
Are the files encrypted? (nm)

Practice files?
Is there an internet source I can find to download 'practice' files, the kind that sounds like a realistic dictation? Because I find my course does NOT prepare me for real-world dictations.
Help! When I recieve files

Hi,

I have word 2007 and when I recieve files to transcribe I can not open the files so I can transcribe the Doctor's report.  I have heard there is something you can do to word 2007 so you can open the files to transcribe and then send the files back to the Transcription company. Can anyone tell me the steps to take to do so?  I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks,

MT

Test sound files
Check out CNC Transcription. No cost, and good practice.
You open your voice files with sm
whatever software you're using for voice, i.e. Wavpedal, etc.  You don't open them in Word.
Question about digital sound files

I posted this on the main board but thought maybe some of you might be able to give me some advice too. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I am totally new to medical transcription and have a question. In doing transcription digitally, what are the most common sound file formats? I am about to take a test (both written & verbal) for a company and they sent me my test files as .wav files. The files are hard to understand at best  (the guy sounds like he's talking into a tin can ) and I am wondering why they didn't send them to me in a clearer form such as MP3. I am about to ask this same question to the person sending me the test but I thought I'd ask it here too. Is the .wav format the most common form of sound file for MT's? And if so, what's the best program to listen to these files in? I have Windows Media player, Real Player and WinAmp on my computer. Are there programs that MT's use to better hear these files? I hate to sound like a total dummy here but I'm new to this and when I went to school several years ago for MT, we only did tapes--not digital! If anyone can give me some info here, I'd really appreciate it!

Best,

RT

I have express scribe that I play wav files from my other job on

i need sample voice files to practice

I need help. I am a recent graduate and I would like to know what websites offer free sample voice files where I can practice.  Thanks

I send my wav. files back and Encrypt them
x
I'm confused ... you should be opening the voice files (sm)

in express scribe or some program like that.  Word 2007 is used only for typing the actual files you're listening too, it has nothing to do with opening .wav files or anything other than text files.

Hearing actual dictation files versus professionally read ones was a major plus
