The dictations that you had to do are probably pretty representative of the kind of dictations that you will get anywhere. In school you don't get a lot of ESL dictators and the audio quality is always good, but in the real world that is not the case. You will get a lot of mumblers, fast talkers, ESLs, reports cutting in and out, etc. It stinks but you learn to deal with it. If you work in a hospital you are usually paid by the hour and you have the unique opportunity to learn while still making money. If you work at home you are usually paid on production so you will not make much money at first while you are still learning. However, if you catch on quickly you might be able to make more money at home being paid on production than you would make working at the hospital and being paid hourly.
