Some companies have you work on their platform.  Word is required sometimes, but not 2007.  You're best bet is Word 2003, which is compliant with most MT platforms.

As far as convincing your husband, don't expect to make a whole lot in the first probably 2 years at least.  This business takes a lot to get up to speed.  Nothing lucrative until your probably 5 years in, and that's definitely not working part-time.  You'll probably need to work at least one full-time job and a part-time to make any great money in this business unless you get your own accounts.  If you get your own accounts through local physicians, then you're looking at being a contractor, which means no insurance help.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

who hires newbies?
I am a recent graduate from our community college and I have been looking for at-home work for a few months now. I am determined to make this work for me, but finances are running low and I am a bit discouraged. What companies hire new graduates?
Alltype hires newbies
If you have graduates from one of the acceptable list of schools and pass the entry test, which is very basic, they do mentor in newbies and won't insult you with 4 cpl starting pay like some of the other companies.  They had a recent ad on the job board.
as a newbie, you need to research who hires newbies

Meditech hires newbies for real
Meditech is a company that does hire newbies for their internship.  I finished my internship in October and am now a full-time employee.  I am posting this message to let everyone know who hasn't found that perfect company that hires newbies, that this is a legitamate company who does.  Everyone wants you to have experience, this is how you get that experience.

I think Medquist is looking..
for QA.....
Have you tried MedQuist?
nm
MedQuist
I agree. One has to start somewhere, and it is the same in any other job area. I only have one small account now (local) and am looking for more steady work now. So it sounds like a pretty good option to me. I need benefits too, and like yesterday...
MedQuist
Have you tried MedQuist? They have been known to hire transcriptionists without any experience.
MEDQUIST
Does anyone know about taking a test with Medquist if they aren't hiring?  I took a test with them a few days ago, and I had a cousin look over it before I turned it in.  She's been doing this 9 years, and she said it looked great!  I was so proud since I'm a newbie.  Today, I got an e-mail that said I failed, but they had no information on how bad I did on what part of the test, and that I could just reapply in 3 months.  Is this standard procedure when they don't need help, or did I really fail the test.  I'm just so frustrated.  I've put in so many applications, and taken so many tests that I've never heard back from anybody.  I just don't know what to do.
Medquist
has been sued by everyone from their investors to client hospitals to MTs who claimed they had been cheated on lines. Why would you want to work for someone like that?
Does Medquist and Spheris pay you when you

first start and are in full QA?  I know Focus Infomatics does not and they expect you to work for 2-3 weeks in training before you get what they call DSP (direct submission priveleges), plus they expect you to spend approximataely 600 minutes long distance (don't know where to) during that training.  So, I was thinking about taking the MQ or Spheris plunge because of the NAZI QA where I currently work.  I've been doing fine for a year, no complaints or problems, then they put me on a new account with a ton of specs with little explanation and no examples.  I kind of feel like I've been hung out to dry.  But, I can't really afford to work for free, which is why I did not take the Focus job even for a couple of weeks.

I've read negatives for MQ and Spheris, but realize lots of people still work there anyway, which makes me wonder just how bad bad really is..  Is Spheris a better option if I don't really need health insurance?  What's the pay like and QA like for both.  Which would be considered better and why?  The "cesspool" madness sounds like a real turnoff.  Thanks in advance for any shared information or opinions.

MEDQUIST MT test
I replied to your message once, but never saw the reply here...so if this shows up twice, please forgive me!  I took the Medquist test a few days ago, also, and today I got the same letter...FAILED...with no explanation.  Like you, I thought I had done pretty well as a newbie.  Now I am trying to take the Focus Informatics test.  However, the very first test...I cannot understand her at all, and it is supposed to be a test for newbies.  Is there someone who can give me some insight into Focus Informatics and their MT tests for newbies?  I really want to get started working and thought I had a chance with Focus, but if I can't even transcribe the first couple of lines of the first report, I'm doomed.  HELP, PLEASE!
Medquist Test
I recently took the Medquist test and failed for a second time.  I looked everything up before submitting it, and still failed.  I have been in the medical field for for almost 20 years, and this really surprised me.  Does anyone know how many questions you are allowed to miss?
Medquist test
I don't know how many Qs you can miss. I have taken that test, passed the objective part, then flunked the actual transcription test. Maybe they would go over your test results with you a bit if you called them? In my case, I know I need more transcription practice. You might just be missing something easy to correct like one of their punctuation questions or something. I would ask them.
I made 7.75 with MedQuist my first year.
I started out with Medquist making 7.75 based on my all-around experience and test scores I was told. That was PTE.

I went on to make 8 as an employee, and I work a second IC job making 16, 13 to start, 16 after 90 days.
Who hires new MTs?
Hi,  I'm a new MT and also cannot find a company to hire me.  I am finding that, without schooling and no job, I'm losing some of the skills I have previously learned because there is no repetition.  I also cannot get hired when I do pass a test, and the college I attended did not inform anyone that we would not be able to land a job once we graduated unless we had 1-2 years of experience.  I did do an externship at a hospital an hour away from where I live and I was given great reviews of the work I did there.  Their budget wouldn't allow them to hire another MT, and I don't care to travel dangerous snow-covered roads in the dead of winter in rural Maine if I could have gotten a job there.  I did walk away with a fantastic reference source which also doesn't seem to matter.  I am also a member of a national honor society.  I loved doing MT work and it is something I can see myself doing until I'm older and grayer.  I am wondering if new MTs will have to wait until all the old time MTs retire before we can land a job!!  I think transcription companies are losing out by not hiring new energetic ready-to-go educated MTs who take pride in this line of work!  I know we all will need a little mentoring, but it will pay off in leaps and bounds for the companies who are looking for help!
Who hires new...
Yeah, but there are companies who have mentoring programs for MT Grads in which you do work from home.
Not much money to be made for new grads at MedQuist.
Guess it is pretty profitable to get rid of experienced MTs and then fill their spots with new grads at half the rate.
How about Medquist? is it a good company to work for?

I recently received a reply from an application I filled out for Medquist and was wondering exactly how they operated and what to expect if it turned out to be promising.  Do any of the companies provide all of the equipment?  My MT instructor said that there were companies that did provide everything from computers to software and the hardware, too.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed...I'm willing to do just about anything to get my foot in the door somewhere.

Medquist flex part-time; try them.
good luck

Send me a post if you would like more info.

Who hires new graduates?
Can anyone give me some ideas on who hires new graduates?  I'm having no luck.....
When your doctor hires you . . .
When your doctor hires you, come back and tell us. Historically, pretty much nobody prefers AHP graduates. Few doctors have ever heard of AHP and other employers shudder at the name.

You should brush up on spelling, grammar, and punctuation. It's "prefer," not "perfer" and there should be a comma before "too."

This whole series of posts looks like advertising spam from AHP. The "I love" and short, choppy, "rah-rah" sentences give it away.

In any event, a good course would have supplied everything, so you wouldn't have had to buy extra dictation. Would have had teachers, too.

HELP someone, I applied online to MedQuist, MedScribe and MT Recruiters..what do you know about

I just finished school this summer and passed all my requirements for MT...I applied to these online companies and wasn't real sure if they were reputable.  I've heard from previous students about companies that don't pay on time and are a little shady.  How can I know if I apply to online MT work at home companies if they are OK?  Better Business Bureau?

I was going to post my resume on Monster.com.  Can anyone tell me if that would be a good decision?

I would appreciate any and all feedback.

Spheris and Medquist get commissions for referring to Career step...
it's called The Affiliate program. Talk about one hand washing the other...you would think it is the City of Chicago.
You make it sound like Medquist runs Career Step
I admit that I do not know much about Career Step, but it is new to me that Medquist runs it and will hire you upon completion. Is this new?

at 5.5 cpl, they pay direct deposit on time, insurance not that great (large deductible) and all the usual FT benefits. Only PT benefit is 401K. My supervisor, QA people, and accounts have all been decent, 4-1/2 years into it.

Newbies
Hi Sarah,
It can be very discouraging and frustrating. Not to burst your bubble, but it may be very difficult to start off working at home if A) you did not go to one of the "big" schools and B)you have no experience. A lot of the schools will have partnerships with MT companies so they can plug you right in to work; I know Andrews school, MTEC, Career Step, VLC...those schools can offer assistance with employment. Unfortunately, it's a little tougher through community college! I know it's not what you want to hear, but working at a small office or even in a hospital setting would be key to starting to work at home. You will have to put in some time outside of home to get some practice before a company might allow you to test and work for them at home. Not saying it's not possible to work at home right out of school...just difficult.
newbies
I absolutely agree with CMT. I also graduated from a local school and was blessed to be hired by a local company (2 weeks after graduation) who hires newbies on occasion. Although, many companies did allow me to test for them. I would suggest going the office route for now and try to work something out with your employer maybe after a few months' time. Send your resume to everybody. There are new jobs everyday. It is time consuming and frustrating but you will get something. Stay positive.
Newbies, etc.
If there are any newbies or wanna be's out there who would really like help getting going and are willing to put in the time and effort, I can help.  The pay will be minimal to start, but with LOTS of hard work, you can raise that fast.  There are two must-haves before I will take you on.  If you answer yes to both questions, you will be on your way to learning.  Please e-mail me to see if we can work together.  I am in Illinois.
MT Newbies

I just wanted to say something on a positive note.

There has been a lot of talk about being a MT newbie, following directions and resumes, etc... I am a newbie myself.   I am still in school; however, I sent out some resumes and I received several job offers.  I am employed now and I can tell you that one of the reasons that my MTSO was interested in me was because I followed their directions.  My resume was short, but I tested well and I got the job.  My advice to all newbies is to take your time while submitting your resumes and follow their requests.  You could get a call too.

So, to all the newbies (including myself), keep your heads up and keep on plugging away.   There are companies out there that are good.

Keep Smiling!

contact transcriptionmatchmaker.com and maybe they can place a newbie - I've sent a lot of students to that website and they have been placed.
Newbies
I worked at a hospital and had no help.  I was the only trancriptionist for 12 doctors.  I applied for the job having no idea what it consisted of, was given two weeks--and a the end of the two weeks, the hospital administrator would tell me if he thought I could do this type work -- and also, I would tell him if I felt I could or could not do the job.  I fell in love with the challenge and worked there (between three maternity leaves) approximately 7-8 years.  I kept the medical dictionary close by.  I  must have done all right since all of the doctors seemed to like my work.  But, there was no one to help with the terminology, etc.
NEWBIES
Does anyone know of any companies who hire newbies?  Thanks!!
newbies
I have been at this for a over a year now and still consider myself a newbie. best bet is to find a local account and get some experience and hopefully, you may find someone that is impressed with you and want to help you. as far as just getting an account on line, it would be pretty hard, first of all to find a job, but most of all, it would be hard on you when you are home alone. take the time to learn, school teaches you some stuff, but you really learn through experience.
newbies

Hi,

I replied to you via email, subject "pay for newbies".

Cindi

I wish the newbies would come here and ask or
otherwise investigate schools to get the real scoop before wasting their money and then coming here complaining they can't get a job.
newbies
Unfortunately this is usually the rule of thumb, no experience, no job. Especially in this field, it is usually not open to training newbies straight out of school from home. I would highly recommend you finding a hospital/clinic to get at least 6 months training in ahead of applying for any job to be worked at home. Been there, and sure was happy to go home to work, lots less stressful than working with a bunch of nagging women, although I have to say, I do have plenty of nagging women with All Type Inc., the company I currently work for. They love to send IM's and E-mails to harrass the employees, and I have learned to just laugh to myself about it!
