You need to go with proven schools. If you short yourself, you will eventually end up forking out more money to get the right education.
Meditec JumpStart Program
I took the Meditec course and followed with their internship program. I still work with them even though I have finished the JumpStart program. They are very supportive, there is a good variety of clients and software to be able to be exposed to, I am glad to be getting this "first" job experience with such a supportive group.
Meditec's Jumpstart Program
Does anyone know if this mentoring program is good and worth tryiing? Do they have enough work for people they accept?
I took the Meditec intern program
I know that virtually everyone will say you should never have to pay to work. But, I took Meditec's training and intern program because I wanted to get real world experience before the real world job and I wanted a better chance to slide into a job at the end of that internship, which I did. I am sure it is not for everyone, but it worked out well for me.
I did the Meditec Jumpstart program
I have no experience with US Career Institute, so cannot say anything about them.
I did do Meditec's Jumpstart program. You will be doing real reports in real time (mostly VR) and you will receive feedback on each and everyone one. They can be quite critical and harsh. Overall, it was beneficial to me. Meditec will tell you the Jumpstart program helps you gain working experience, and it does. But what I found out after completing it was that the companies I applied to did not count any internship program as experience, thus basically forcing me to work for Meditec after I finihsed it for an extroadinarily low rate. But then again, I did intern myself straight into a job, which I thought was much better than not working at all. That said, I still got very good experience (just not good pay). I got most of my initial two years experience while working for them.
I understand your plan, it sounds similar to what I planned as I went into training, only I also trained through Meditec. Your plan can work. The biggest thing I can advise you to do in addition to your studies and internship is to study the BOS rules and document set up. If you don't, both will come back to haunt you in the way of not finding a good job when you are ready. I hope this helps. If there is anything else I can tell you, please email me. Good luck to you and God Bless.
Good Anatomy list
Do you want to find anatomy list? Look at Mosby's handbook of anatomy physiology. The book is very good. If you need the book, I can sell mine $10.00. I have other good books too from my previous course. I give up transcription career.
good training program
I recommend Selkirk College's Advanced Medical Transcription Program. The training I received there is just great and it is an accredited college program and a member of AAMT. The training program follows industry guidelines.

Venting-- my not-so-good MT Program
I'm about to graduate (next quarter) from an MT Program that is very flawed. I didn't know any better to start with, but I do now. I will complete the program since I have invested a year into it; however, I am really feeling alone. I receive no feedback whatsoever (only grades) from the instructor, and the material has some serious errors in it (which the teacher is unwilling to address). I started working through the BOS student workbook on my own, and I'm finding there is so much missing from this program that I'm frustrated. I feel like now have to learn all the things that I should have learned (paid to learn) on my own.
Frustrating!!!
Penn Foster isn't a good school/program. I would
suggest finding a mentoring program of find an in-house position.
Good MT Schools--CareerStep Medical Transcription Program
Hi--saw your message and I am a graduate of a really good MT school--CAREERSTEP.
Just type in www.careerstep.com and check it out!! It is really a good school and they have either textbook and tapes method or online course--2 types, I believe--Gold online and Platinum online. Goodluck!!!
Also still waiting to hear...
I sent my assessments back on Friday the 28th and haven't heard anything yet. They were very quick to reply after I sent my resume and sample transcription. I was hoping to hear something soon, but I'm sure they have tons of people to sort through.
Welcome to MT! I find it a good career. This info should be included in your training program... nm
Just waiting till the end of the year (sm)
Like I said, I'm not certain if I am going to be sent a quarterly tax invoice or not, but I figure better safe than sorry!
How are they supposed to keep track of your
payroll taxes if they don't have your Social Security number? Employers are SUPPOSED to have your SSN. Your SSN is not supposed to be guarded as a deep, dark secret that no one on earth can see. You're just supposed to be careful not to give it to people who are not supposed to have it. Your employer HAS to have it. Your employer is not one of the people you are supposed to hide it from.
I know there is supposed to be no spelling police,
but when you are giving the must have excellent "grammer" talk, you should at least spell grammar correctly.
anyone who whines with the "how am I supposed to get a job" thing gets their resume deleted...

What about Meditec?
What about a school, Meditec? Have you head of them? I am suppossed to attend sson! Any advice and/or comments? Their website is www.meditec.com
Thanks!
Meditec
Has anyone recently used Meditec for medical transcription and/or billing/coding? I'd like to know if they're good, bad or otherwise, please. Thanks!
Meditec does, but there is a fee.
There is also an AIM program, but I don't know anything about that one.
ANYTHING ABOUT MEDITEC OR A MENTOR!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!
me too. I have been looking for someone to mentor me. I am 39 years old and started late in life but I have put my entire heart into this trying to make it work. This is something that I have been wanting to do for years and have finally succeeded. I am having a hard time trying to get started though. Does anyone know anything about Meditec. They offered me an internship program. There will be no pay until I reach 98% accuracy and then they will start paying me.
Who needs Soap Network
with Dallas and Knots Landing reruns when all the unsatisified housewives can be found right here! And I thought being an MT would be about transcription!
SOAP Transcription
How would I go about applying with them. I checked their website and it seems to be down.
I did the Meditec internship
and it was really good training. I know the contact person if you would like me to give it to you. Or you can go to Meditec.com and it is on that site I believe. Let me know!
SOAP note
Hi! When doing a SOAP note, at the end, the Dr. says "Thank you" and gives his name. Do you type the "Thank you" or is that for the transcriptionist. In my schooling, all the reports I typed didn't have the Dr. name dictated at the end?!
That does not sound like Meditec
At least, certainly not the program as I recall it. And, no, the internship was not "a part of" my training requirements. It was something extra that I wanted and chose to do. I merely consider it a part of my overall training because of the added value of it. Yes, I already had my certificate and probably did not need to do that, but I wanted to and don't regret it. The Jumpstart completion requirements were basically to be able to proove yourself capable of producing quality, clean, error-free reports according to account specs. There were no special numbers or quotas involved. Each report completed was checked by QA who gave me very timely feeback. I do not recall any line requirement for that, especially 200 lph to start. Corie at Meditec is really the best person to talk to about this program and current requirements. I am sure she will answer and/or clarify any questions or concerns you have. It worked out well for me, although Jumpstart was totally separate from training and was something extra I wanted and personally chose to do for the experience. I am still glad I did.
I wish you all the best of luck.
Has anyone worked for Meditec?
If so, can you make any decent money with them? Do they have good accounts, support and platforms? I'm thinking about applying. I'm so tired of working long hours for less than minimum wage.
Soap notes
I just finished taking another employment test. I think I failed. Does any one else have trouble with soap notes? My school didn't give us much practice with those.
Soap notes:(
I figured it out. Thanks for all of the help.

SOAP note question
Hi, in the "real world", how would the patient name, date of birth, date of service be formatted on a SOAP note? Would they each be on a separate line with a space between each line? Also for the doctor signature block, do you have to put in a line or just hit return 4 times for him to sign there, wasn't sure if you necessarily have to type the actual line. Thanks
SOAP Transcription might take you on as a late shift

Career step and Meditec-sister courses-sm
I understand these are two in the same course ran by sisters. One charges much more than the other. What makes Career Step any better than Meditec if the Meditec course is basically what Career Step is using to begin with, and the Meditec lady wrote the course?

Looking for that list!
I saw the list a couple or so weeks ago with all the list of companies that someone had compiled (brillinat), that will probably hire newbies. I can't find it! I am doing a paid externship at a local transcription company but I am not getting paid a lot. I need to find part time or full time work with another company. Help!
List
THANK YOU!!!
thanks for that list!
thanks for that list!
Of course you would not list your name as you know you are wrong. sm
If you are going to make such a bold statement that you see as truth why didnt you list your name? Of course you listed as anon. I am the MTSO for Proficient Transcription and have been in business for over 10 years. The start up cost associated covers the cost of the foot pedal which, by the way, is $79 alone. I dont think it is too much to ask for a MTSO to have a little bit of insurance when it comes to hiring a newbie. Why would anyone invest the money in the foot pedal for a newbie if this is their first position if the MTSO has no guarantee of their work? I am helping out and doing something not a lot of companies do and that is to give a newbie a chance. If that is perceived as a scam then so be it. My MTs receive work daily and are paid competitively for it. You have no idea what it is like to try and run a transcription business and unless you do then please keep your defaming comments to yourself. This kind of banter is what scares away MTSOs from hiring anyone without experience. I was given a great chance to get into this business without dropping thousands of dollars into schooling and all I was doing was trying to help someone else do the same. This girl was talking about purchasing hundreds of dollars in books and paying the same for schooling and I was offering on the job training but I cant afford to do that at my own expense of all the equipment. I dont understand what is so hard to understand about that.
Not a list of MTSOs
just a list of transcriptionists. You can add yourself to the list at no charge. Just fill out the form.
List of books
Language of Medicine (Barnes and Noble or AAMT.org). It goes through every body system and all kinds of tests and abbreviations, etc.
I also bought used college text books on anatomy, labs, etc for dirt cheap which helped me as a newbie.
Also, another tip, find some seasoned MTs you can communicate with on messenger. I am experienced but having a few people to get opinions with always helps.
I am mgtranscription on yahoo if interested. Where did you go to school?
For a list of companies ...
Check out -- http://www.transcriptionresource.com/companies.htm.
If you received your training from certain places, some employers will waive the experience requirement. Check with your school for assistance with job placement too. GOOD LUCK!
Thanks DJ! That is a great list! nm
love that dmz list
That site is where I found my first job. I recieved 13 responses from that list and I had ZERO experience. I have been working now for one month. :)
List of companies
Here is the link to a list of companies. http://forum.mtstars.com/medical_transcription/v/3/7497.html
Here you have contact info for some of those companies:
http://www.mtinsider.net/2008/06/companies-that-hire-newbies.html
Good luck!
This is a huge list of MTSOs.
This list is huge. A lot of these seem to be small businesses. I only looked at one state, but the list was long. Not many have websites, but some of these businesses are still doing tapes and offering a wide range of services. You will therefore want to look mainly in your own State.
If they can only receive resumes by mail or fax they are not getting swamped with them, so you might have a better chance. . Happy hunting!

List of transcription companies and their URL's ?
A while back I remember someone posting a site that listed a bunch of transcription companies and their URL's. The list was really, really long and categorized by states....anyone remember or have that URL ?
Thanks in advance!
Except it's not a huge list of MTSO's. It's...
a site where you can post your own business if you want. Most of the postings are solitary MT's, just like you and me.
Try making a handwritten list as you have to look up
the drug names. I have a lot of experience, but I also get stuck on drug names sometimes. That is my weakest point as well even though I hate to admit it, but one thing that helped me is to handwrite on a piece of paper that sits next to you all of the new drug names and their correct form (whether to cap or not), and then for some odd reason (it worked for me) when I'm transcribing I'll think to myself, oh wait, I know that one is on my list. Googling is good too, but you have to watch the sites as not all are consistent or may not be correct. Googling can pull up all forms of that word being used, so just be careful there. You'll get there, and happy MT'ing...
