For those of you that do VR, I was wondering what your hourly or daily line requirments are, if you work part-time or full-time, and how many hours you work per day. Newbie in the field and I was just wondering what the "norm" out there was.

Voice Recognition
Hi everyone, I have a general question about voice recognition. Is it worth the investment to buy a voice recognition program for a medical Transcriptionist working from home? I ask because I have only been doing this for about 2 months, recently graduated from a MT program at Kennesaw State in Georgia, and I feel as if even after I get the experience and even being a fast typer like I am, I am never going to be able to earn enough doing this where I can move out on my own. I live with my mom right now. So I had the idea of a voice recognition program in combination with my own typing. I realize that voice recognition is not perfect so I would edit as I typed. I know there are a few hospitals going this route now so I figured why not me. I would love opinions on this. Thanks.
Voice Recognition
No! No! No! Voice recognition is nowhere where it needs to be right now. Very few dictators enunciate clearly enough for the system. It is very expensive and we just got it in our hospital and are very very disappointed with the results. Out of over 1000 doctors, only about 10 of them speak clearly enough to produce good results. In about another 5 years, hopefully things will improve. By the way, we have Dolbey Voice.
VOICE RECOGNITION
I am new entrant in the MT field and find typing long hours real punishing. I want to share the experience of anyone who has tried voice recognition technology and its practical use in reducing typing work load and speeding up work. I have tried it myself and find the process of correcting the output to be as time-consuming as doing it manually.
ASR, VR or other voice recognition
programs. Does anybody have any advice on how to zip through these reports like we are apparently supposed to be doing? I find editing often takes much longer than it would have taken me to type it straight out. It's not so bad when dictators are really good, but most do present daily challenges. It is so frustrating. I am open to whatever advice you have to improve my editing skills.

VR = Voice Recognition
Also referred to by other similar names. Basically, what it means is that dictated reports are run through software systems that are supposed to recognize the speaker and speaker's words and transfer them to a transcribed report. Then that report is supposed to be lightly and quickly edited for correct wording, punctuation, etc. What none of these VR systems can do is ignore background noise and extraneous sounds or even understand the dictator who is talking while chewing gum, eating or for Heaven's sake anything else. VR cannot determine the difference between the identified MD and the PA, NP or whomever is actually dictating the report for that MD. VR will not necessarily get the correct word when it does understand the correct word (ex: 2, to, too, two or fair/fare, or by/buy, etc.) VR cannot think or reason. It cannot go back and change anything the dictator requests to be changed or added. It never knows what to do with "um, next, a, and stuttering."
All VR software will add and leave out words. I've never worked on any VR report that did not require just about as much work as standard transcription. They all need something. In fact, some are so bad that it is just easier to delete everything the system puts in and retype the whole thing from scratch. And companies want to pay rather poorly for us to edit these reports. VR is a mess everywhere.

Voice Recognition/ Dying Breed????
Hello!
I have been scriping and saving to afford going to MT school. Now two ladies that I know, wives of doctors, have warned me not to spend my time and money on MT school because MTs are a dying breed and voice recognition technology is taking over the MTs work, all that is needed now are people to do data entry which pays very little. Is this true??? Something to worry about in the future or are they just uninformed about what it is that MTs do? Any imput would be greatly appreciated!!!

I need some information please. Can someone fill me in on Editing, Voice Recognition (I know what it is but don't know how about it in terms of a transcriptionist's duties), and also, can you find someone to mentor you to become a Transcriptionist and how would you find such a person?

Minimum line requirements
I am wondering if any employers offer transcription opportunities where there are no minimum line requirements expected of the transcriptionist. I know if you are employee status then you probably have the 10-12,000 line requirement for a pay period, but what about IC status? Or part time? Can someone please let me know if any MT employers offer "situations" where a transcriptionst has no minimum line requirement?

Gross line means anything on a line is a line, even if just one word
it is counted as a line. Not sure what exactly you are asking, but if you are comparing gross line to the usual 65 characters plus spaces gross line is better. If you make 7.5 cpl per gross line that equals approximately 9.5 cpl based on 65 characters.
Requirements
For the mentoring program you will need to have a USB foot pedal and the ability to play wave files. You should have highspeed internet as well for you will need to pull down wavefiles to transcribe which will be very lengthy utilizing a dial-up. Also need Microsoft Word. For those responding, let me know the hours/days you would be available to work.
Now, which companies fit the above requirements? LOL

If you look at company requirements
they will not accept your nursing as MT experience. It is not the same job.
Please go to the best MT program you can afford, first.
You're in a tough gig -- starting MT work, new mom with baby at home ...good luck but you can do it with a good education behind you in MT.
Jumpstart requirements
You said Jumpstart was part of your MT training program?You needed to complete Jumpstart in order to complete your training? May I ask what were the requirements to complete Jumpstart and go on to mt status? Did you need to type a certain number of lines and hours in order to complete your internship?
I am in an internship program that stated 120 clock hours was required to complete the internship. I recently learned clock hours was determined by dividing lines typed by 200 lines per hour--which is what an mt "should" do. I was thinking I was nearing the end of my clock hours only to learn I have only a third of the hours in.
I should have asked how determination of clock hours is made, right at the beginning but I was dumb. Once I started asking I couldn;t get an answer for over three weeks and then I had to call the person in charge to get an answer.
Would like to hear the experiences of others involved in internship as a feature and requirement of their schooling. The internship program is terrific. When you get your diploma or certificate you already have experience which is invaluable. I just wish I had been smart enough before starting internship to ask how the hours were determined. Actually it should probably have been part of the information the transcription company put out prior to having interns begin.
It is true. Those have tested and meet AAMT's minimum requirements
The Approval Process does mean something to me. It means that those schools have been tested and at least meet the minimum requirements, according to AAMT's standards. It doesn't say if they have gone over and beyond those minimum standards, but people in the industry know that already.

ASR = automatic speech recognition
which is the same thing as basically any other voice recognition system. It all sucks and still takes just as long, sometimes longer, than standard transcription and the system is never as good at doing its job as the makers try to make people believe. Therefore, it is the MT who has to get in there and clean up the mess. That can be anywhere, not just an MQ issue.
As far as the rest, it just sounds like the company made some changes that ruffled the feathers of a few MTs. Clearly, some talk-the-talk of leaving and may do so, it's a free country. But, others still stay. The confusion is about how bad is bad. If I were in my 20s and felt like the company I was working for was jerking me around - I'd be gone in a New York minute. But, I am a whole lot older than that and have built up a buffer of sorts over time and feel that many things I thought were so important (or infuriating) in my 20s is pretty petty and lame now. So, it's hard to tell what is real and what is just gossip and pot-stirring.
I've read some compelling posts. Some quite interesting. Some insinuate the company doesn't care about the MT. How much caring do you need? When I'm hired to do a job, that is my focus. I do not want nor expect my employer to nurtur me and tuck me into bed at night. Just let me do my job and leave me alone. What's wrong with that? I am, however, concerned about this uneven workload where some MTs have little to no work, while others have an abundance. That's just poor management.
If no one wants to give the "real deal" of what it is like working there, that is fine. All I could do was ask.

Does speech recognition really give you less typing?
TTS, LLC says that you really only have to proofread. Does anyone know if this is true?
You open your voice files with sm
whatever software you're using for voice, i.e. Wavpedal, etc. You don't open them in Word.

A wav file is not short for waveform. It is a voice
file that you would receive over the internet, not via C-phone. You need software/foot pedal to be able to play the wav files. Wav is pretty much the generic term, but there are many different formats, like mp3, DSS, etc. that the files could be in.

It appears as if the OP was so happy about passing the test and receiving that phone call that she rushed to the computer to share her good news with the world. Would it have been so awful to just wish her luck and share her joy? I have been an MT for a year, and I still feel proud and happy each time I pass a test. It is hard for a newbie or someone with less than 2-3 years of experience to get a company to even let you test. When you then pass the test and get a phone call, that is veryexciting and makes you feel good. You could have wished her luck publicly and then sent her an email making her aware of her mistakes along with some tips. This New MTs forum is the last place on this board to post a message like yours.

I'm confused ... you should be opening the voice files (sm)
in express scribe or some program like that. Word 2007 is used only for typing the actual files you're listening too, it has nothing to do with opening .wav files or anything other than text files.

The VLC has had numerous complaints against them and people demanding refunds. I was in a position to KNOW that people that couldn't get jobs because they couldn't pass MT employment tests after the VLC course. How is that being immature? Evidently, you're one of the VLC reps lurking on the boards so you can jump in and refer your school. Otherwise, you wouldn't be taking it so personally.

I also do voice recognition as well as straight transcription. I have been an MT for about 2 years now and started off doing voice recognition and I love it. I now do about 1800 to 2100 lines per day (voice recognition). I started off with a company doing vr and was only making 2.5 to 3 cents per line and I stayed with them for about 18 months and after the raises I was making 4.25 cents per line. However, that was an IC position and I wanted benefits so I started taking as many online tests as possible with companies that offer employee status and not IC. I wanted to get benefits. So, eventually I passed the tests for about 6 different companies and I got to pick which one I wanted to go with instead of begging for someone to hire me.
I would take some tests online on the days that you are not working perhaps on the weekends or evenings and see if you pass the tests. It can't hurt at all. I am now working with a new company and I am currently making 6 cents per line and this is for voice recognition, which is pretty darn good doing about 1800 lines per day. You will not know until you try. E-mail me if you have any other questions.

Can someone please help me with the whole line count, WPM, total dollars concept. I'm trying to figure out my potential income doing MT. I know there are a range of answers but there must be some averages. I would be brand new at MT. What's your best guess of amount of work in say a 6 hour/day schedule? After 6 months experience? How is line counting done?
I know it is based on a 65 character line, often including spaces, but how do you line count your work and get an accurate number?

Hi! I got offer of 7.5 cents per gross line. No idea is it better than 7.5 cents per line including spaces? Please advise!

I graduated in Aug - my first job finally came in Sept/Oct they started me out at 7 cents doing orthro clinics.
Line rate
I believe that means 7 cents per line for a 65-character line. If it does, that is not a good rate, especially if you have experience. Also, you need to find out whether that is 65 characters with spaces or without spaces. If without spaces, that is really a bad rate! Good luck to you!

I have never heard of someone asking a rate based this way. Find out what the margins and font (etc) are before you sell yourself to short. Then I would calculate any document based on those responses and see what the would equal up to so you get a decent rate.
HELP--On-line course information..??
I have been an MT for 13 years and have a friend who is trying to enter this profession via an on-line course. She asked me if I know of any. Can anyone tell me about an on-line program that includes training in Expander programs that is a legitimate program and recognized and accepted by employers? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

as a new grad is 90-100 lc/hr fair or should i get a job flipping burgers

So many newbies I've seen post on here are paid .065/line when they are first starting out. Many say that is very average newbie pay.
All you can go on to compare is the $7.43/hour that you made. Divide that by .065 and you have 114 lines/hour. If your not actually typing that many lines/hour, than your making MORE than average newbie pay.

What do you mean by the contract seemed way out of line?
You don't give an example of what you are talking about, but I doubt anyone here would knowingly sign a contract that was detrimental to them or way outside industry norms.
I love my ESLs. Even though I do acute care, they tend to be fairly repetitive in their phrasing, and you get used to them after a few reports. In many cases, I would much rather have an ESL than a doc who drops entire syllables from words and words from sentences because he is in such a rush to be done with his dictation. Or spellers. I hate spellers.

 I would like to know who out there started off with a low line count and exceeded to the max of a 1000 lines or more. How many reports are that usually.?And the appropriate hours it takes to get it done.? Would you please share your story with me. that would be great!
Line counts
If you can create normals this will help tremendously with your line count. Also be sure to utilize any samples that you have available. If you are not using a word Expander already, that will definitely help your speed. The biggest factor in being fast and getting a good line count is to know your stuff and that just comes with experience. When you are first starting out there are a lot of things that you have to look up and that takes a lot of time. Once you get more experience you will find that you don't have to look up as many terms and your speed will pick up.

Cents per line...
Yes, at 6 or 7 cents a line, that is strictly training wages. Don't settle for anything like that, especially if you have experience and you know you are good at what you do. These companies make anywhere from 14.5 cents on up for the work they receive throughout outsourcing so, in essence, whatever you make, they make, except you are the one doing all of the work, paying for your phone line/internet, etc.
If they only want to pay 6 or 7 cents a line, let them get new grads or someone with no experience, that way they will get what they pay for.

What would the typing wpm of a new grad have to at least be, in order to meet the following line count?
"Most full time positions are between 1200 and 1500 lines a day (6000 to 7500 lines per week). Most part-time positions require at least 120 lines per hour "
