Definite file that complaint.
They will get back to you via e-mail.  It works.  They will wind-up looking into that company as the above poster says and you will get retribution.  It may take some time, but do not give up.  Report it every so often to keep it active, but yes, report it to the FTC.  That is what the FTC is there for, us consumers who get badoogled!
Proficient Transcription
The other posters are right...do not pay to work! I came in contact personally with Proficient Transcription (got the tip from one of my former classmates) and it's a scam. Shareware is free. Two of my classmates paid for the "shareware" and it turned out it's something you can get for free...hence the term "shareware." Do not do it. It is a scam.

Recieved a job offer today via email through this site. Has anyone else worked with them? Requires $99 startup fee for software and adding a user. Says it takes about a day to set up and start typing. Plus they offered a footpedal for me to use. Hoping its a good offer since I'm new and can't find a lot else. But just wanted some opinions. Thanks
Proficient Transcription
First of all, let me say thanks to the replies to my post. Secondly, After I posted this message, a couple days later I got an email from someone from "Proficient Transcription", letting me know that they had job openings and wanting to know if I was interested. I replied back, letting them know that I hadn't even started school yet, and since I had no knowledge of any medical terminology or medical transcription yet, why would they want me to work for them? They replied back saying they have had MT's in school and working for them before. Again, I am not even in school yet, so why would they want me to work for them? I got on Google and did a search for Proficient Transcription, and it brought me back to these boards. I saw a couple of posts about the "company", basically that it was a scam. I don't understand how these people sleep at night knowing that they are trying to take innocent people's money. It's downright pathetic. Shame on you.
Proficient Transcription

I am going to address the issues that were posted on this board.  First of all I have been transcribing for over 10 years.  I enjoy what I do and I support my family with this career.  I feel the need to defend myself after reading some of the posts.  A couple of my MTs have told me to just ignore the boards and dont worry about "feeding the trolls" .  However, I cant help it.  Staying silent is not in my nature.  I got into this business without any schooling and complete 100% on the job training and as a new mom it gave me a way to be at home with my children which is my number one priority.  You dont get into this line of work for the glory or the benefits.  I am a big believer in karma.  I was given a great opportunity by a great person and I wanted to give that back to the newer MTs.  A lot of times new MTs are caught in a catch 22 "No experience, no job" and "No job and you get no experience". I wanted to bridge that gap and help new MTs get their foot in the door.  However, I cannot do that at the expense of my own living.  I am not a large company and I cannot afford to "foot the bill" for equipment and start up costs for each new MT.  I dont think that asking someone to be responsible for their own costs is a big deal. After all no one is hired by me as an employee they are independent contractors.  As an independent contractor you are responsible for your own business expenses.

I have prayed about this a lot and it is heavy on my heart tonight and I want to clear the air.  Someone is upset, that is fine.  You cant please 100% of the people 100% of the time.  Instead of directly addressing me he/she is using this forum as a public flogging.  Posting names is against the board rules I believe and invites more trouble, i.e. defamation and libel issues.

Please search your hearts and support your fellow transcriptionists as we are all in this business together.   I cannot express enough how beneficial we can all be to each other if we just join together to get through issues instead of attacking each other.

Bad experience.  Promises, Promises, Promises.  I would NOT recommend doing any IC work for them.  OH!  wait, you can't do any work for her because she doesn't send you any work to do.  It won't be long and she will be seeing her business name on the BBB complaint list. If you were a reputable MTSO than why is there alot of negative on this board about you?  It seems to me it's not just one person that is not pleased! Do you have an excuse for that too?

As of today this owner has not kept her word.  The Better Business Bureau develops and maintains Reliability Reports on companies in our service area. This information is available to the public and is frequently used by potential customers. In the case of your complaint, the company's failure to promptly give attention to the matter will be reflected in the report we give to consumers about them.
Proficient Transcription is a scam - sm
I came in contact with Proficient Transcription too. I told them I was interested in a position, and asked what would they require from me. Expecting to get a reply of "take this test and then we'll review it and get back to you" I got "send $99 for shareware either with a money order or some type of cash card you can purchase at Walgreens." By the way, the shareware they want you to pay for is actually something you can download for free from the internet. Please, people do not buy into this scam and don't send this lady any more money! I'm glad the above poster smelled the rat.
proficient transcription...sent them money...will I get work?
I was hoping this would be a great job.  Does this company actually give you work?  Really worried now.  Help!!!!
Any update on those refunds from Proficient Transcription?
Just curious...
Proficient Transcription is supposedly a company but they charge you to work there (sm)
You should never have to pay to work.
Regarding Proficient Transcription, the owner still owes people money
so her apology is lame. If you want to get your money you had better go straight to your local court and file a claim against her, because it doesn't look like she's planning to pay anyone back anytime soon.
Transcription School Info

Is anyone familiar with the Gatlin Online Medical Transcription Course?  My daughter is consider taking it, and I don't want her to waste her money.  It is offered through a university in the area where she lives.

Any comments would be helpful.

Thanks.

Does anyone have any info on A to Z medical transcription course...m
My daughter and I were looking at this program where you train from home.  They will contract you to work for them when you are finished.  The ad says you can make $20 to $25 per hour working for them.  It is owned by a lady named Deborah and it looks like they are based in AZ.  The cost is $950.00.  Any experience with them?  All help is appreciated, thanks!
My only complaint about CS is...
the lack of technical training with various platforms and/or features like macros, templates, etc. I had no experience with using these things and had to learn them on the job. As for the medical, grammar, and the like, I have no problems with their coverage of these aspects.

Also, I get no kickbacks for recommending them, since I did not sign on for any affiliation program. As a matter of fact, my advice to any potential MTs is to enter an altogether different profession.
I have never heard a complaint or bad thing about either one. Good luck to you. nm

Proficient Transcrption---FYI

Hi everyone.

I just wanted to share that I got my $99 refund from Proficient Transcription yesterday. I got it in the form of a money order. I believe this is a positive gesture on the owners part to ensure I have no hassels with cashing it. I'm glad I don't have to worry if the check will clear.

Save as a .doc file sm
When you're finished with the test, make sure you save the document as a .doc file to send back. In 2007, a Word document would have a .docx extension.

I work for a company that uses an earlier version of Word, so I save as .doc files on a regular basis and they haven't had any problems with compatibility.

Hope this helps.
IC can file estimated x4 annually or....nm

Anyone receive their refund from Proficient yet?

I haven't and really don't expect to.

FTP = file transfer protocol; a way to (sm)
send one file directly from 1 computer to another.  Some FTP's require passwords, others don't.  It all depends on the level of confidentiality of the file.
Do you have a company or do you file a joint
return?
If you are married and file jointly you can have your spouse
take out extra taxes and not have to worry about paying estimated taxes.  I've been doing it for 2 years and this works well for us.  Budgeting is an issue for us, so this way we don't have to worry about it, it comes out of his check and we even got a little back this year.
Need help opening a compressed file with Vista
I received a test from a company and it is a compressed file. I have Vista and have been unable to uncompress(unzip) the files. It says the folder is empty. I emailed the HR department and they said that they have received several test back already so they know the folder is not empty. Does anyone know how to uncompress a file with Vista?
A wav file is not short for waveform. It is a voice
file that you would receive over the internet, not via C-phone.  You need software/foot pedal to be able to play the wav files.  Wav is pretty much the generic term, but there are many different formats, like mp3, DSS, etc. that the files could be in.
If the test file has such difficult ESLs, you don't want to work there anyway! It would be

If you file jointly it doesn't matter who paid for them, it all comes
from the same pot anyway.
Short for waveform.....type of sound file.

Whoa..how much can you make on eBay before you DO need to file taxes on that income?

I started out in the file room of the urology office I used to work for.
They had a new peds uro coming in and wanted another typist. The only schooling I had was 2 semesters of medical terminology at our local community college. Granted that was in 1990, and I at least had a working knowledge of urology, but it can be done if you really want it bad enough.
My info
I am currently enrolled in Andrews MT course (started last week) and I'm almost 29 years old. I do think that probably most people in their early 20's don't necessarily consider MT as a career. For me, the thought had been in my mind for several years, but it wasn't until I started thinking more seriously about starting a family relatively soon that I finally enrolled. When you're very young and don't have kids, and aren't thinking about kids, you tend to have different priorities. For me, I've been working for more than 10 years, have a long commute (an hour one-way) and want to start a family, and it's important to me to be involved with my kids, be able to see them off in the morning, be here when they get home... MT becomes more and more attractive.
course info..
has anyone heard of the At Home Professions MT learning course?
My info
I graduated in October of 2004 and I'm 38. I did several years of medical billing and opted to try mt as i became disabled. Been unalbe to find work or a mentor so far. If you have any ideas let me know.
Need info

Could someone please explain the major differences between acute care basic 4 and multispecialty clinic transcription?   It seems that the job ads usually specify which one and how much experience is needed with each of these categories, but I am curious to know the differences and why someone with several years of multispecialty clinic experience may not do well with acute care hospital transcription.

TIA for any info provided!

Does this pt have some sort of respiratory condition?
Here's some info..... (sm)

Sorry to hear of your troubles!

There are two main schools, Andrews School and Career Step.  If you graduate from one of these schools, then you will likely find employment quickly.  They cost more, but you get what you pay for!  You will have to test with individual companies to get hired, but that should not be a problem with the proper training.  There are plenty of companies that hire at-home workers, so that will not be a problem either.

Don't quote me on this, but I think Career Step qualifies for Pell grants so if you go through voc rehab be sure to check that out.  Good luck to you.

Thanks for the info.
I will send resumes to those companies.
Too Much info
If I were you I would hang on to my day job at that school unless you have to work from home. It is hard for a newbie fresh out of any MT school these days and the line rates are going down hill fast. Even with experience they don't want to pay for all we have to know/do. Still if your heart is set on MT work I would go with one of the top 3 schools, wish I had but at the time I picked the only school that I could afford to go to. Best of luck to you whatever you decide but if you have full benefits where you are now -- I would stay there.
Thanks for the info! nm

Thank you for the info

Some MT info

This link has helpful info if anyone is interested.

CAI info

CAI has a message board on their site where their students exchange info, you may want to check there http://www.caihometype.com/.  Hopefully some grads will see your post here as well and contribute.  I found it to be an excellent education and I got a job within 1 1/2 weeks of graduation.  They have an extensive list of companies who hire their grads that you can ask for upon graduation.

Good luck with your choice!

Thanks for the info

I did look into community colleges.... It seems like the same Career Step program but triple the cost.   I like that the career step program is pretty cheap when compared to others and is an approved program. I just wonder how much harder it will be to find a job after graduating from career step then it would Andrews or m-tech....And then when you get into what program (basic, premier, etc, etc) it gets even more confusing!

Thanks for all the info!

Where did you get your CS info? more..
Hi Amanda,
I've posted here on the boards about CS through Everett Community College and have received many emails from working CS/Everett grads telling me they loved it. They had jobs before graduation and felt very prepared to go to work.
I just wondered where you're getting this info about their education. Did you go through CS? Does your employer not hire CS?
Do you think going through Everett makes the difference?
I'm not trying to be nasty in anyway. I really do wonder where this info comes from.
Thanks,
Christy
Thanks for that info.
I really do look forward to getting started with them.  Everyone there to whom I have spoken and contacted has been really nice.
Thanks for the info! (nm)

Thanks for the help and info!

Thanks for the info.
I'll check it out. I just completed a full course and I'm wanting to find something that I will get paid for and not spending even more money.
Really? Who? Please provide more info
about these unsuccessful M-Tec and Andrews graduates. I'm sure Susan and Linda would want to know so they could help them. Because they DO help their graduates find jobs. Good jobs. I think you're making it up just to make yourself feel good.
I hope this info. will help you. SM
I posted this several months ago on this board, and have copied here for you:

I truly do not believe there is an online or distance learning program, or even a four year college degree for that matter (yes, I have a 4 year degree in healthcare administration with emphasis in medical records) that will prepare a new MT for the "cut throat" world of MT. When I say cut throat, I don't necessarily mean cruel, but rather very competitive. You better know your stuff or you will not survive, or at least not make a good wage, unless you have the hands-on experience of working in a hospital in a wide variety of specialties with close supervision. Yes, one can succeed starting out at home if you have one specialty and learn that inside and out. The time and errors involved in the learning process starting at home in a variety of specialties for a national company (which for the most part is required to compete in this profession) will afford the new MT a minimum wage at most. Like I mentioned in my previous post, there are those few gifted new MTs who will pick up new specialties and satisfy the large online companies, but the general population will not. Just like a doctor, you have to spend several years in fellowship or internship to work your way up with fund of knowledge, etc. I say to any newbie, if you think you have what it takes, go for it. I'm just trying to be honest in saying that you need to be realistic in this profession, as sample dictations in school, as well as test dictations, are no comparison to the real world of MT where we continue to learn even after many years on the job. I hope this helps any new MT take the route that will be of most benefit to them in this profession.
More info on expansions sm
I have not read through this whole thing recently, but a few years ago I read it and it really helped me improve my expansions.  There is a lot of information, but it is some of the same information I so lamely tried to explain in my first post.
