If a company wants you to work for them they should provide the software. sm

In Reply to: Most refer to them as TranScam . . . if that - tells you anything. (nm)

You will have to buy some hardware (foot pedal etc) but the either the software is free (express scribe) or they provide it. This is just my experience but I did see that company when I first started and I did almost take a job with them until I was told the same thing. Good luck!!

Please help! Did you guys have to buy the software or did the company provide them?

I'm  just trying to figure out if I'm actually doing this whole process right or not.....II know I have to purchase some things, but want to make sure I'm not being taken.

company is trying to sell you the software/equipment
it is a scam, not requiring the software/equipment.  The company can offer payroll deduction, but an outright you must buy this from me first is a big red flag.
Any company that charges anything to work is not a reputable company. However,
if a company offers a job and requires that you have a certain pedal and offers to provide it and then take it out of say your first paycheck or couple of paychecks, then that is acceptable.

My belief is that companies that charge you for software or anything else is trying to make money off of you.

While $11.95 isn't much, figure that amount times 10 or 20 or 100 and what do you come up with? Smells like a scam to me.
Don't pay to work for anyone except to get software/pedals that you can use for other companies.

Work for Local Company
I work as an IC for a small local company at the moment.
May I ask Micgroovy, what company you work for?
Of course if you'd rather not give out that information I understand.

Thanks either way.
US Transcription, good or bad company to work for?

Anyone got any information about working for US Transcription?  Good or bad information would be great.

Thanks.

Anywhere I've used this it's been set on the company end how the work is funneled to the MTs.

I emailed you where I work...great company

How about Medquist? is it a good company to work for?

I recently received a reply from an application I filled out for Medquist and was wondering exactly how they operated and what to expect if it turned out to be promising.  Do any of the companies provide all of the equipment?  My MT instructor said that there were companies that did provide everything from computers to software and the hardware, too.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed...I'm willing to do just about anything to get my foot in the door somewhere.

I wouldn't work for a company that outsourcing offshore and then lies about it.
absolute definitive proof of this.  Be wary.
I only wanted to work for a local company, not a large national. So... (sm)

I went to Google Local.  Clicked on "find businesses".  I then put in medical transcription in the "what" box and my City, State in the "where" box.  I sent a resume and cover letter to every hit that looked good to me.  I also went through the yellow pages and sent a resume and cover letter to every listing.  I sent out more than 50 resumes.

I had about fifteen calls back.  I had five offers.  I accepted one.  I have been getting calls ever since.  In fact, I left my first position about three months after I got it in order to go to another company that was offering me more per line plus incentive.  Yes, I accepted 7.5 cents from my first employer and she worked me to death and had some serious, shall we say, boundary issues.  But I got my feet wet and in the door and was on to better things within months.  I have been at my current position for about seven months, and it was a position I got based on yet another one of those resumes that had been received, kept on a desk somewhere, and acted upon months after I had sent them out.

One thing that no fewer than five of the fifteen callbacks said was that they were very impressed by my resume and my cover letter.  One lady said that she was amazed by the number of people applying for jobs as medical language specialists who cannot even manage to put out a resume and cover letter that is free of spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes.  So, do a professional resume and cover letter and make sure it's PERFECT.

I love my job and feel very blessed that I never experienced some of the awful newbie troubles I have read about here.  If you have any questions or anything, feel free to contact me off the list or reply here and I will get back to you ASAP.

Proficient Transcription is supposedly a company but they charge you to work there (sm)
You should never have to pay to work.
Really? Who? Please provide more info
about these unsuccessful M-Tec and Andrews graduates. I'm sure Susan and Linda would want to know so they could help them. Because they DO help their graduates find jobs. Good jobs. I think you're making it up just to make yourself feel good.
There are a lot of companies now that will provide
an expander.  Some have programs that will only work with certain ones.  The most widely used by companies I believe in ShortHand/SpeedType.   I don't know anything about IT so don't know how it compares.  You can go to SH website and download a 30 day trial, don't know if there is a trial for IT.  I know with SH/ST you can convert your expansions from other programs.  I wouldn't buy an expander  though until you get a job.  I know a lot of people who still use autocorrect in Word.  Most companies use Word in some form and should be sufficient initially.
Sorry, that should read "Do not provide..."
Forgot the drop-off point there.

Disagree. We have a gravy account that we, as IC's, provide our own equipment and pay for
a token to get into the software. Big deal. You pay $150 for a C-phone and $150 for the token but then you make scads of money!  So would weigh the ROI (return on investment).  Not a hard and fast rule to never buy equipment you can't use on another account.
A large part of MT work is research. Do some research on this company. Check Google, etc. nm

Didn't she sell it, or just your company to an offshore company. The woman

has a screw loose.

No, the woman who owns this company can't transcribe herself, much less run a company.

company was sold so they have no company to hire you after graduation!
They are not a reputable school and I went there so I should know. Even when they did have Trans. Relief Services they never answered my email about employment upon graduation.
Software

The only software I paid for out of my pocket was my word Expander software and the electronic medical dictionary - and I kept those receipts and deducted the expense on my taxes.

If the company has a specific platform that needs to be downloaded, that should never be charged for.

The software is about $400 and it may/may not

work.  You don't actually purchase it from them, but from another company.  The Scam company does not offer support for the software because you didn't buy it from them and the company you did buy it from is probably a sister company to Scam and you don't get any help there either.

I don't know how they are even still in business.  They have moved to a different state and changed their names at least once.

If you have money to just throw away I'll send you my account number - LOL.

Different Software

Does anyone know of any other software besides Express Scribe? Do not like new version. When I tried it, it made my dictation sound worse even before I made adjustments. Does anyone have any advise?

Thanks

Can anyone help me where to buy or download escription software??

Transcription Software
I'm just starting out on this new adventure.  I didn't go to MT school.  My experience lies with being a nurse for 7 years of various acute care specialties.  I'm now a new mom and trying to stay home.  Can anyone recommend transcription software that will make this easier for me?  Thank you
Software Questions

What types of special software would I need to work at home as an IC? This is for a school project.

Thanks!

Firewall, Security Suite, Medical Spell Check, Line Count, etc. Anything eles anyone can add to this list?

best software for spellcheck
I am getting ready to start mentoring for Focus.  I wanted to know what would be the best spell check for medicines and up to date.  Also what is the best text Expander program.  I have one from my school, but is there a better one to have?
Re: Selling Used Software (sm)
You can sell "used software," just make sure that it is legal! If you have one of the large storage packages, 600 MB for a complete CD are no problem. For some dial up users the upload is the expensive part of it!

You may include your registration details in a file and add it to the software package.

Note: You can sell your used software normally ONE time. If you sell the stuff several times (like an FTP client, etc.) this is surely not legal! So check your license gals!
Sharing software

My understanding has always been that it is not legal to share software to be installed on other computers.  I believe there are exceptions to this; some programs are "sharable," but usually those are free programs to being with (in my experience).  Microsoft programs come with a unique key that has to be entered when installing them.

My knowledge of software programs does not extend far beyond MS products, a few free downloadable programs and a few other miscellaneous software programs, so I apologize if I have given any incorrect information.

Interactive MT Software?
Does anyone know if there is such a thing as interactive software for MT practice and/or skill building?  I think this is the kind of thing that would really help me, but have not found anything even remotely close to it.  Any ideas appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

line counting software
is it necessary to have line counting sofware or will the line counter on MS word work just the same?
You pay $397 for software and additional for a pedal.
Then you get to work for free until you are up to "standards," which will never happen. You will be unable to get a refund of your money. If you do a search for Trans@Am Associates either here or a web search (with the @ sign), you will find plenty of info as to why it is a scam. You can also check with BBB in Florida.
