I think it is a reasonable goal.

I graduated in March and for my first year I made just over $15,000, but 6 months of that was working part-time. For the first 6 months after graduation, I worked for a large national. I could barely make $8 an hour. I soon realized I was not going to make more than that on the account they had me on and I quit to become an IC. I do have to pay self-employment tax, but I also get tax deductions that I didn't get as an employee. After 4 months on my current job, I am now averaging $16 an hour and am still seeing steady progress on my pay. Even if I stay at $16 an hour working 40 hours a week, I would make just over $33,000 next year. Not too bad for my second year. I can certainly see making $40,000 by the third year. I do think a lot of it though is finding the right company and the right accounts. If I had stayed with the first company I started with, there would be no way I could ever make $40,000 a year. Even the experienced MTs on that account were having difficulties meeting the required line counts because of the awful dictators.

1. I have emails and messages from five people on this site who had the same problem with you.
2. I wrote and called you 15 times before you suddenly decided to send me a dictionary - not the foot-pedal or CDs - a dictionary. What a return for a $400 investment. By the way - I still don't have the dictionary.
3. You erased my grades, blocked my email, didn't return my calls, and denied my from the forum.
4. It has now been 21 business days, five weeks, and I still have received nothing.
5. I could be transcribing now rather than answering your message, and I'd be MUCH happier. All you had to do was send the materials I begged for in the many, many letters I wrote you.
6. So don't pull the 'reasonable' stuff on me. I was nice for way too long. You're just used to people who are too busy or too intimidated to call your bluff.
So give me a refund and compensation, and we'll stop all this now.

Your first step should be to determine if MT is a good goal for you
You have to look carefully at yourself and determine if you have the skills needed. If you don't, I would suggest that you go to an MT course taught at a community college.
