Save as a .doc file sm When you're finished with the test, make sure you save the document as a .doc file to send back. In 2007, a Word document would have a .docx extension. I work for a company that uses an earlier version of Word, so I save as .doc files on a regular basis and they haven't had any problems with compatibility. Hope this helps. They will get back to you via e-mail.  It works.  They will wind-up looking into that company as the above poster says and you will get retribution.  It may take some time, but do not give up.  Report it every so often to keep it active, but yes, report it to the FTC.  That is what the FTC is there for, us consumers who get badoogled!  FTP = file transfer protocol; a way to (sm) send one file directly from 1 computer to another.  Some FTP's require passwords, others don't.  It all depends on the level of confidentiality of the file. Do you have a company or do you file a joint return?  If you are married and file jointly you can have your spouse take out extra taxes and not have to worry about paying estimated taxes.  I've been doing it for 2 years and this works well for us.  Budgeting is an issue for us, so this way we don't have to worry about it, it comes out of his check and we even got a little back this year.  Need help opening a compressed file with Vista I received a test from a company and it is a compressed file. I have Vista and have been unable to uncompress(unzip) the files. It says the folder is empty. I emailed the HR department and they said that they have received several test back already so they know the folder is not empty. Does anyone know how to uncompress a file with Vista? A wav file is not short for waveform. It is a voice file that you would receive over the internet, not via C-phone.  You need software/foot pedal to be able to play the wav files.  Wav is pretty much the generic term, but there are many different formats, like mp3, DSS, etc. that the files could be in.  Info To File Complaint Against Proficient Transcription This is just and FYI for those who are fed up with trying to get refunded from Proficient Transcription. You do your time in an office first, like the majority of the rest of the MTs did. That's how it works. MQ employees at St Louis office I just accepted a SE position with MQ at the St Louis office. I started my "home work" with one doc. She raved about me so much that all her doc friends called me to get me to work for them. Sit down with your doc and feel him out. Call their office to see which one they would recommend for you :) nm x From what I can see, it's not MS Word, it's "Opal Office" and they are charging $11.95 for it, and it's a ripoff because they stole the program from "Open Office" which is totally free and are selling it for $11.95. At least that's how it looks to me. I had to start out in the office of a local hospital sm for a year, then went home.  I didn't want to go home to be honest, too many distractions and my twins were babies at the time, but they were sending everyone home.  I really don't know what to tell anyone when I see these posts.  There are lots of companies out there needing help and you'd think that if they are willing to send their work overseas to people that don't even speak English as a first language, then they would be willing to hire a new graduate.  I would be a little more pushy, offer to do 30 days at a lower cent per line then have a review, something like that.  Keep pushing, someone will see potential and take a chance on you.  Honestly, these companies that don't hire new graduates I just don't get it.  I work for a small local company that is always behind on their work and I always suggest they hire some new graduates from the two local schools, but they never do it, they just sit and wait for people to apply.  Good luck!  office experience + Medical Terminology - Is it enough? Hi everyone, I've been wanting to take an MT course for quite some time, but still haven't managed to come up with enough money. So - I was wondering. Do you think for a beginning MT job in a hospital, would previous office experience plus courses in Medical Terminology be enough? Have any of you successfully done this? Thanks for the help! Christina   Maybe try a specialty doctor's office first. Most times they will hire you, in-house, and go from there. It is very difficult to find an at-home MT job just starting out; however, there are some companies who will hire you. I personally do not know of any, but if you do a search, maybe you will come across one. When I started 25 years ago, it was in a private physician's office and I just moved on up from there. Good luck! Just be careful not to get Office Works or Suite that is advertised as compatible with MS Word. I accidentally bought that once, the packaging was similar and the box said it did everything MS Word did. Well, it sort of did, but that software changed every document I had in my entire computer upon installation to its own version. That certainly would not have worked in transcribing and transmitting reports. While it did work with Word as the packaging said, it did so by changing Word to something else. I don't recall the exact name of this, but just read the packaging carefully and get Microsoft and not a lookalike. Just wanted to give you a heads up to avoid one of my many mistakes. Good luck. Now that I can find a job having trouble because I do want to become a home Medica Transcriber and no one will listen to me. A friend wanted me to try to get her a job where I start next week.  I'll be doing MT for an hourly wage.  I have an educational background and training in everything related to it except actual transcription, but I am being given a training period to get my ears up and running, and I hope that I can get fast enough.  I am working through a medical transcription text at home (bought it a year ago used to get more information about MT) to brush up and get some more information before I start. I am also gathering some reference materials to shore up what I already have at home from my previous studies. 

Anyway, she said something like "maybe you can get me a job there too". She thought that I could get her "up to speed" with MT skills and recommend she be hired.  I told her the reason I was hired w/o transcription education was because of my medical studies background.  I had to take a terminology test as part of the assessment.  She said that she would definitely fail that.  I told her then, first of all, she should take a med terms course, to which she said pretty vehemently that she did not have the money to do so.  I kind of stuttered at that point and kind of repeated what I had already said about my background helping me land the job.  I think she got annoyed with me . But this is a job where you cannot wing it at all, and you need to invest in your training. Why is it so hard to explain that to people without upsetting them? 

Recently when she knew I was looking for a job, she let me know that the tax prep firm she works for offers their tax preparer cost at a deep discount in January, and that once I pass it, I could apply to do part time or prn tax prep for them at the office where she works.  While that was kind of "insider" info that I did appreciate, I feel like maybe now I upset her by not agreeing to try to get her a job where I work. 

What do you do when people want you to get them into MT like this?  If she asks again I am considering finding a practice dictation to listen to.  I just know I can't put a word in for her if she doesn't even want to take a med terms course.

about 7 months ago.  It isn't all about typing, really.  I type about 98 wpm now, but with research, entering identifiers, finding doctors or city names, etc...the typing isn't as important, even though it still matters.  Plus, after typing all of the reports Career Step has, you'll be typing faster in the end.  When I started school I was typing about 74 wpm roughly, just to give you an idea.

Plus, there's always Typer Shark .  I bought it while in school to get some typing practice.  It's helpful and fun.

I've been doing transcription for 25 years and I love it.  I've been working at home for about 6 years and for Medquist for 3 years.  One thing I would tell you right off the bat is a lot of graduates have problems getting that first job because everyone wants experience.  I would talk to the schools about what they offer in terms of finding employment once you graduate.  I know Medquist used to have a school called Career Step and would hire you directly upon completion, but I haven't checked into it lately.  I think the website is careerstep.com. 

Other than than, it is never too early to start building a medical library.  I would start with Dorland's Medical Dictionary or Dorland's Medical Speller.  They aren't cheap, but you will get your money's worth over the years.  I love my noise-cancelling headphones that I found on Medword.

Monster.com and placing a resume there.  MTDaily is another place you can put in resumes.  Keep passing resumes out.  Look for a company and check out its reputation here and other MT service blogs or boards.  I came here first and discovered that some companies don't pay until they see their names lit up here.  I went looking for transcription companies advertising for doctors to type for, and then found the back door to their recruiting department.
