I have asked about a couple of companies.
I am completing a course through Gatlin Education Services and I want to know if they have a good reputation. It is a pretty simple question. Correct if I was wrong but I thought this was a site for new MTs to ask questions. Are we limited to how many questions we can ask?
Just do it. I work for a small MTSO and recently asked for myself - and got what I asked for. nm

86%?? As a recruiter, this is valuable info!
I'll be rethinking how I look at M-Tec graduates, and testing them more thoroughly, as 86% is certainly not acceptable in the real world.
recruiter point of view
I am trying not to be "nasty" or "hurt feelings." Just stating my experience I have to agree with the MTSO post. I cannot tell you the number of resumes I get where the requirements absolutely 100% do not fit the person emailing me. And I love it when I post "please CUT AND PASTE your resume DO NOT ATTACH." Guess what, very few can read that. A second favorite of mine is ABSOLUTELY NO OFFSHORE COMPANIES APPLY. Guess what? Every Indian company out there cannot read because they apply ... oh, and they ATTACH a resume. The typos are sickening, but I won't get into that. But what really bugs me is how people take applying for a job so lightly. For instance, if you were to read a job opening in a newspaper, you would obviously construct a nice resume and mail it to the potential employer. Why on the internet should it be any different. I get emails for job openings with email addresses of "snoogleboogle@hotmail.com. Is it so hard to get an email address that is professional ... such as JaneSmith24@yahoo or Jsmith24@hotmail. And the ultimate ... "I have a handicapped child at home and need to be at home. Tell me what transcription is and I can do it. I'm sure it's not hard (LOL)." LOL???? Are you serious?? Nevermind the fact that, unfortunately, I cannot take into consideration your personal problems when I am looking to fill a position. So please don't tell me why you need to work at home, just send me a resume that says why you are qualified for this position. And LOL??? I will leave that one alone.
There's an MT recruiter below who has been placing more MT's than ever. Contact her for email.

Probably, but it depends on finding a recruiter who will let you test with the limited
s
How many times can you
take a test for the same company? If you don't pass the test the first time will they never hire you? Or do you keep taking the test until you can pass to their expectations?
I can't count how many times (sm)
I've seen insurance companies request notes on a patient just to get an MRI authorized, for a patient to get a nonformulary med, etc. The canned templates in the EMRs I've seen create sloppy notes and most look like they've been pasted together like a ransom note, not a clean, concise document. One doc told me he would never use his EMR system to document a visit because it was rude not to make eye contact while a patient was talking to you! There has already been one EMR company that threatened clinics with "freezing" their software if they don't hand over their wallets! EMRs have a long way to go before I ever feel threatened by them.
Maybe it would help if posts had times on them
so we could see when each was posted. Sometimes it's two people posting at once, and one person got interrupted in the middle and took a while to finish and send.
Thank you a hundred times over. = )
Maybe try a specialty doctor's office first. Most times
they will hire you, in-house, and go from there.
It is very difficult to find an at-home MT job just starting out; however, there are some companies who will hire you. I personally do not know of any, but if you do a search, maybe you will come across one.
When I started 25 years ago, it was in a private physician's office and I just moved on up from there.
Good luck!
India is hardly ahead of us. I have posted this several times now.
MTs required to do the same amount of work. Do you call that being ahead of us? I don't think so. The only reason there are a lot more Indian MTs, or from other countries for that matter is because it's about a 3 to 1 ratio. Yes, there is a lot of dictation going overseas, but keep in mind that the quality coming back is very poor and requires American editors to clean up the mess, which equals jobs to Americans.
I make 2-3 times what I made as a nurse. nm
Thanks! couple questions
Thanks for the reply, I have a couple of questions for you:
Do you have to pay income taxes quarterly? Do your taxes seem much higher self-employed than as a regular employee in other jobs?
a couple questions
Hi all. I have been reading this message board for a few weeks and have found many of my questions answered. I will be starting MTEC this week, as soon as my books arrive. I will also be purchasing a laptop tomorrow to use solely for school. I am looking at a Lenovo R61i, but I read on MTEC's website something about students having trouble with a 64 bit processor. How do I tell if the processor in the Lenovo is a 64 bit?
Also, I am just looking for some sincere advice about learning about the Medical Transcription program. I am so intrigued and excited to learn more and start school so that I may eventually work from home. Any advice will be appreciated.
TIA,
Linz
This is another school with a couple SM
of true references and then a bunch of homemade "books." They even go so far as to imply that you're getting a Book of Style, but what you're really getting is another thrown-together homemade shortened version of it.
I didn't go to any school at all, I've been doing this for years. This "school" is a waste of money.
A couple of things...
1. People who hire do read these boards so, for your own sake, watch spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
2. Have you tried contacting your school for help with your job search? That should be your first step.
Lots of luck.
Couple of questions for New MTs
I have a very short survey (two questions) that I am asking for any new MTs to complete. Thank you!
As you'll hear 1000 times, there IS no school that SM
can offer an MT certificate. You have to take the test through AAMT.
Also, what offices and hospitals want? A person who can sit down and do their work without a lot of discussion or BS. Just get the work out, make it correct. I was in a hiring position for several years at the largest hospital in my state. I didn't care about certification. I cared about test performance.
Of course a CMT behind your name means A LOT. That test is very difficult and, for the most part, if you have passed that test, no more discussion is necessary.
even I have a couple of people I call.....sm
I'm in this business many years, almost 3 decades, and I STILL have a couple of people, one especially, who I call when I have an MT question or if I want them to listen over the phone....it's networking and it's great and if you find a REAL good mt or cmt, well, then you've got GREAT help. Sometimes 4 ears are better than 2. I even have my daughter listen if she is here (albeit she is not in the medical field except 5 years so far *S*)
Best of luck!!
Remember a couple of years ago
We heard the same thing. Big articles in newspapers about the radiology group that loved speech recognition so much. It turned out that administration forced it on the doctors. They rebelled and hired transcriptionists for themselves and walked in with transcription machines. They told administration they had wasted enough of the doctors' time and they were having no more of it.
I'm sure we'll hear of some successes, but it sure isn't getting rave reviews from the majority of users. Someday, maybe.
It is worth it, but with a couple of caveats (sm)
It can take several months to two years to train for this profession, depending on where you get your training and how many hours a day you can put into it. Then, it can take up to several months or more to land your first job (again, depending on where you get your schooling - M-Tec grads get placed right out of school sometimes). And when you do get your first job, chances are your pay isn't going to be great at first because "newbies" are generally hired at a decreased rate, and it also takes a while to get your speed and line counts up.
But, like I said, it is worth it.
There was a posting on the Job Seeker's Board here last week (I think) for a company that was offering a unique opportunity for disabled transcriptionists. If you didn't see it, be sure to check it out.
Lastly, check in regularly on these boards. Yes, there is some sarcasm and negativity, but mostly it's people willing to help other people, and I have learned a lot from here. Best of luck to you in whatever decision you make!
a newbie here with a couple questions please....
Hi, thank you for taking my question(s). I have Windows Vista on my PC, came with it. and I am about to begin MT School online, I have asked the school, but alittle confused. The software I will need, will it be compatible, with Vista, or is there conversions I might can buy, or download for free.
The school is in La. and the program is Career Steps. ANY info will be greatly appreciated. ~Leslie in NWF
It only took me a couple of months to get out of unpaid status!
Great to get my foot in the door!
Have you asked your school?
nm
You asked for pointers ...
and I'm not saying this to be mean, but from your posts you definitely need to work on grammar (and spelling of "congratulations"). Grammar and spelling are very important and no matter how many medical words you know, you will not get hired with poor grammar.
You got an answer to the question you asked
There is no need to become retroactively indignant. You wanted to claim experience for your schoolwork. You were informed that that would be inappropriate. Now you know.
Well, it's the only software my friend was asked to buy!
Do you have an answer for that?
When I asked them questions about volume,
they told me to forget it. Seriously, if I remember correctly the exact words were "don't quit your current job." I find it very rude that they would act this way all for asking about the workload (this was just before interviewing with them). They were offering 3 cpl and I asked them if the workload was enough to compensate.
Take your own advice. The OP asked and I threw her some
nm
You asked this below. You need to post your resume
on the job boards.
From what I understand when I asked the AHDI...
An approved course means that they passed the AHDI's requirements (you can see the requirements that must be met on the AHDI's website), but an instutional member only means they have paid a fee to become a member of the AHDI. The AHDI in no way endorses these companies. Any company can pay the fee and become an instutional member. This is evident in that a company that is a known scam in the MT community is an instutional member of the AHDI.
You're welcome to your opinion. She asked for advice
and I gave her mine.
Get over it.
She didn't say she worked in another state. That's why I asked WHY?

That company that asked you what days/hours
As an independent contractor, a company cannot dictate your days/hours unless they "employ" you. Glad it works for you! However, the IRS does not see it that way. You are providing a service whether it is transcribing or building a brick wall. They can guide you with what tools to use, how they want the job accomplished, and for that matter in regards to time constraints, but they cannot have you punch a time clock. With that said, I also IC for a company that requires 24-hour turnaround, which I am willing to accept as "part of the business". In this business, the vast majority of companies gain these accounts for you and I to work on by providing 24-hour turnaround. Most companies will train you on their equipment if you do not have experience. They will provide samples of reports if you are not meeting QA and also provide input to bring your QA score up to par. I make my own hours in that I will not say to this company, I'll work, for example, 9a-5p, because there may be days when I cannot do that due to the fact that I have other commitments whether it be with my children or with the fact that I have my own accounts that I need to tend to, which quite frankly is not their business to know. You are providing a service, which just happens to be transcription. If this company is getting away with setting your schedule, then you should most definitely be an employee. That is your choice, however, to allow them to dictate that to you. Most companies do not pay, as you already know, for your benefits. Bottom line really is you are a subcontractor. The MTSO is the contractor actually, and then you subcontract for the contractor. Thank goodness the company I work for knows the difference.
Linked the website. They've never responded the few times I've tried. nm

I asked for no salt and there are big grains of salt nm
