This was years ago, actually about 15 years ago. My sister was in the middle of a really nasty divorce. I was working for a small transcription service where we received overflow work from a local hospital. I know I should have passed this job on, but curiosity got the best of me, and I didn't do what I should have done. The report was a psychiatric report for my sister's estranged husband. The dictator clearly stated that my sister's husband wanted to kill his wife, right down to the details of what he wanted to do to her. However, at the end of the report, the psychiatrist stated that the patient's homicidal ideations were no longer present and he was being released. I struggled with this one for about a week, during which time my sister's estranged husband busted into their house and held her captive in the bathroom until my brother showed up at her house about an hour later. She was okay, but to this day I've felt terrible about choosing to keep my mouth shut. I rationalized with myself that he had been threatening her, so we all knew what he was capable of, plus he had been abusive during their marriage. I did tell her to please be very careful and not let him around when no one else was with her. I do know I should not have typed this report, and I'm ashamed of myself for not doing the right thing in the very beginning. I know longer do local work, and I'm happy for that. I think there are way too many situations similar to this and the others mentioned that could arise when you are doing this type of work so close to home.
