I am one of those who didn't even hear about M-Tec or Andrews until after I went to community college for a year. I received my certificate there. Since then I have a job with a national during the week and I cover a hospital on the weekend. It can be done, but it is going to take a little more elbow grease to get started. I started looking for jobs in January, and I wasn't set to graduate until May. But I started contacting companies and networking and a week before my graduation I finally got a "yes!" and a month after that I received a phone call from someone I had emailed SIX MONTHS PRIOR who never even replied to me asking me if I wanted to cover the hospital (I do that from home also btw)
So yes, if this is really what you want to do, going to community college can help. Like the other poster said, talk to the teachers. My teachers were very smart about transcription, but were kind of behind on the world of working from home.
P.S. Please don't get into it if you JUST want to work from home. It will drive you absolutely insane. The drama and b.s. you have to put up with is only worth it if you truly enjoy the medical field.
P.S.S. Make sure you have a strong stomach for "sounds" - burping, snorting, hocking, etc. Most doctors do not realize there is a PERSON on the other end! I have one doc that all he has to do is hold the phone to his butt and poot and we will have covered all the body sounds he is capable of! :-D
Good Luck to you!
