Does anyone know how much actual dictation Gatlin offers? (sm)
It appears to be only a very small amount.
Anyone know for sure?
Most common or major?
The nationals include Medquist and Spheris.
Other larger companies that you might consider: Webmedx and Accuscribe.
Personally, I would just look on the job board here and start applying all the way down the line.
Mumbling doctors cause major frustration!
Why can't someone just speak clearly? Grrr. Sorry, really needed to vent to someone who understands. I have re-played and re-played and it doesn't make it much better. This doctor clearly mumbles.
MT and QA hearing
I am a new MT in an MT internship. I'm beginning to think I will never advance from it. What in the world can I do when I type what I hear (and it both makes sense and is verified when I Google or check medical references) and receive feedback from QA saying the speaker said something else? I have advanced to the point that most of all my reports are (as they say) "clean." Surely I'm capable. I keep hearing that I am close to turnover to paid status. I just have this one issue that the QA person sometimes hears something differently. QA is always the boss, I can't really argue since their word is final and they get really snotty if I prove my point on anything.
Please don't get me wrong. I do understand QA expertise and value their feedback. I am working predominently with voice recognition and having to edit out a lot of wacky words and make corrections to read what the dictator actually said. I've had my hearing tested. I have a new computer with great speakers. I have several ways to control sound quality, speed and volume. What else can I do about this? If I could predict when QA and I would hear a word differently, I would just leave a blank. That would cover me fine.
I just want to move on to get my first MT position. I'll even work for peanuts if I have to in that first job. I know I'm a newbie and can't know everything, but I am a nurse and do know more of what I'm hearing than QA seems to think sometimes. Where is all this helpful QA I heard about in nursing school? I hope I'll find that one day.
And why does QA have to be so nasty? If I were trying to help someone, I wouldn't be belittling. I am almost convinced this school I am interning wtih does not intend to move anyone forward to paid status because they always pull the rug at the end and deliver such snippy feedback. Feedback is either "Good job" or something snippy.
Any kind thoughts out there to help me? Thank you.
only hearing with one ear on microcassette player
Purchased a 'gently' used cassette player and I can only hear through one earphone. Is this normal? I am use to listening through speakers on my computer via online dictation, so I was just curious. Thanks for the replies.
Can an impending migraine affect hearing?
I am working on a familiar dictator, non esl, who has a funny manner of speaking but I had gotten used to it. I am getting soo many blanks with him right now. About 5-10 times more than I ever do with him. I am considering throwing in the towel tonight and sleeping on it to see if it is my headache that feels suspiciously like it is going to blow up into a migraine. I have had this headache off and on most of the past 2 days and an Aleve tonight did not kill it.
I am just wondering if it could be affecting the fine tuning of my hearing that allows me to discern the unclear parts.
Regardless, I am going to go back to it for a bit and then stop. The throbbing is now bilateral.
Have you done any actual MT work yet?
If all you know of MT work is what you were exposed to in your training, then you have NO experience. To claim that you do have experience would be dishonest. Claiming your school work as experience would fool no one. MTSOs are not unintelligent people. They can see through things like that.

If your schooling includes actual transcription...
not just book work, you've really had the basics you need. There are lots of different preferences out there. The big issue will be hearing what is said and putting it down accurately. So much has to be learned on the job depending on your specialty and who you work for.
If I were you, I would focus on getting the right tools - basic reference books, an expander, wave pedal, etc. Be sure you have a good resume and cover letter/email, then locate the companies that hire newbies and begin your search! Once you get your foot in the door, you can get off and running.
I always found the tests more difficult than actual work (sm)
I think they try you out on their most difficult to see how you do. It also may be the stress of taking a test too. I tested with anyone who would let me test, and I failed a lot of them, but just keep trying. Persistence does pay off. It sounds like you have a great start and you should probably stay where you are to get the experience. Yes, it will count. Best of luck to you!
most use wav files
Yes, there are programs that are used to play these files with a foot pedal. I am using DSS by Olympus and it plays both .dss and .wav files. There are companies that let you use their own programs.
I agree with you that the voice files they usually use for testing just SUCKS. I have tried using Realplayer and Media Player before but it is hard without the foot pedal.
I NEED WAVE FILES
Dear M.Ts.
I am in need of M.T. Wave files to improve my skill. If any body is willing may mail me.
Playing WAV Files
I am a new MT and the company that I work for does not offer trouble shooting. When I download a wav file from their FTP site, it will not download into express scribe or bytescribe, in which I have both set up to play wav. I do not have trouble downloading anyother sound files, just the wav. I also have in the past been able to play wav files in my express scribe, just not from this company's FTP site. Does anyone know of something that could cause this and how I could fix this problem? Thanks!
Are the files encrypted? (nm)

Practice files?
Is there an internet source I can find to download 'practice' files, the kind that sounds like a realistic dictation? Because I find my course does NOT prepare me for real-world dictations.
Help! When I recieve files
Hi,
I have word 2007 and when I recieve files to transcribe I can not open the files so I can transcribe the Doctor's report. I have heard there is something you can do to word 2007 so you can open the files to transcribe and then send the files back to the Transcription company. Can anyone tell me the steps to take to do so? I would appreciate it very much.
Thanks,

MT versus nursing
Pamela, this board may seem negative, but overall MT is not a negative profession. With the money you can make, and the ability to be at home with your kids, it is definitely worthwhile as a "transitional" job. You may find yourself 20 years down the road still doing it, as it works well with a family. Be patient, find the right company. It can be done. I see a lot of positives along with the negatives on this board; if a company is good, then the employees will let you know, if a company is bad, listen to the people telling you not to go there. When it's 10:1 against a company, something HAS to be wrong . . . Good luck
IC versus employee has nothing to do with either
IC is just a tax status.
There are plenty of MTs who get paid hourly.
It won't make any difference if you are an IC or an employee...you can get paid whatever method you are successful at negotiating with your client or employer.
Vista versus XP
I recently started working for another company and the computer tech is EXTREMELY knowledgeable when it comes to platforms and such. I was informed that Vista is basically another version of Windows ME which, most people know, was a HORRID version of Windows and Microsoft is planning on coming out with yet another operating system early next year.
I have also done internet research and there are posts regarding the fact that you can partition your hard drive to where you can have both XP and Vista running on the computer, however, in my opinion, that is best handled by an expert and not something that anyone should attempt on their own without extensive computer knowledge.
Right now, I would say your best bet would be to try to find a computer with XP on it as far as a laptop, or if you can hold out, stick with the dinosaur for a bit longer. Also, it may help to get registry fix programs etc, many of which are free and extremely good programs and might help to optimize the older computer in terms of speed, etc.
Test sound files
Check out CNC Transcription. No cost, and good practice.
You open your voice files with sm
whatever software you're using for voice, i.e. Wavpedal, etc. You don't open them in Word.
ACUTE Care versus other.
What defines someone to be an acute care MT as to a multi-specialty MT. What is the difference? Sorry if this is a dumb question..
Thanks!
clinic versus acute
acute care consists of patient care in the hospital from the time they are admitted until they are discharged (emergency room, history/physical, consultations, progress notes, lab/imaging data, transfers, and discharges are the most common). clinic notes are office visits (sometimes include consultations and maybe lab/imaging data). these are usually shorter dictations than the acute care.
To AJ - editing versus transcription
Hi AJ - Have they requested that you switch to VR editing yet? Do you know anything more about how they are handling transcription versus editing? Thanks!!!!
Teens versus adults
All of this thread reminds me very much of the conversations that happened between my teenagers and my husband and I.
They insisted they were adults, they had the maturity, they knew what they were getting into, they were right, etc. My husband and I knew better; we were adults who had already been teenagers and been there, done that.
Were we hateful and rude by not giving them full rein and encouraging them to act like adults when they weren't? NO!
We did the responsible thing: We told them as fairly and truthfully as possible that while it might seem they know what they are talking about, their insistence about it showed their immaturity. It would not be fair of us, as parents, to not be up front with them, etc.
And so the story goes here. We have young ones in this profession and those who have matured in it. We simply know because we have worked for years in this industry, seeing the ups and downs of it, worked inhouse and worked at home, and already raised our children. We already know what you're facing and what you WILL face.
Lisa, however, is that teen and so are you, Dreamer, who is insistent that she knows everything already. She makes demands and thinks her way is the only way. Not so. Not so at all.
Per Line versus Per Report
In a 7-hour day I can type 2000 lines or 200 reports. Most companies expect 1200 lines during a full-time shift, so that probably would equate to 120 reports if you are going by the 1200 lpd standard. Another way to look at it...the average "decent" (not exceptional) MT should be able to type 20 minutes of diction in 60 minutes. I don't proof after typing, I proof while I am typing. Hope this helps.
contracting versus employee
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of contracting versus employee? I have plenty of time throughout the day, but my husband works from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. This is a large chunk in the middle of shifts. Is contracting setting the amount you will do for the day? Like I would be able to work 6 hours but at split times throughout the day? Any help on this would be appreciated.
Template versus document
The poster above is right, but there are definite advantages to using a template. The biggest one is that you don't run the risk of saving over your basic document when you've made changes/additions to it in creating a new document. You have to remember to change the name of the file when you save it or it overwrites your prior document. With a template, this isn't an issue. If you want to save out a basic document as a template, just remember when you save it to change the file type ("save as type") with the drop-down menu to "Document template (*.dot)." You'll be able to pull it back up when you create a new file by chosing the "on my computer" option under "Templates" in the task pane. Hope this helps!
MT versus working at Wal-Mart
I have been an MT for 16 years. Twice I've taken time off (over a year at a time), because of being burned out.
Working as an MT at home is much better than working at Wal-Mart, or any other retail-type job. I have much more flexibility in the hours I work. I can be at home with my children, so that I can take care of their needs. I've never had to have babysitters for my kids. Now that they're all in school, it is easier, and I can still schedule my work time around their hours. How in the world would working at Wal-Mart be better than that?? And even though the amount of pay I've been offered recently is less than my best job 5 years ago, I am still making 3 times as much as a Wal-Mart employee!
I never went to school for training. I am just an excellent speller with good typing and grammar skills, and I learn quickly. I worked at my college health center for one year because of the above skills. I didn't work after that for a time. Three years later, I started sending out resumes to a bunch of local MTSOs and, after several months, one asked me to come test. My persistence paid off. I did very well on the testing and was hired. I struggled those first couple of years. Because I worked hard to learn new specialties, the MTSO was always asking me to take on a new one. I probably worked a lot of hours for low pay as I learned each new specialty (I guess you COULD say I paid for my training! Lol!), and I shed a LOT of tears as I worked in the wee hours of the morning (because I didn't work until after my kids were in bed). However, I am grateful to her for that experience. I did eventually move on into acute care and did fine because of the opportunities she gave me.
I still think MT is a good opportunity for people who just want to be able to be home with their kids and/or have a flexible schedule that allows them to run a forgotten lunch to school, go to a child's afterschool game, etc. How many workplace jobs offer that?? It's still worth it to me!
Question about digital sound files
I posted this on the main board but thought maybe some of you might be able to give me some advice too. Thanks!
Hi everyone,
I am totally new to medical transcription and have a question. In doing transcription digitally, what are the most common sound file formats? I am about to take a test (both written & verbal) for a company and they sent me my test files as .wav files. The files are hard to understand at best (the guy sounds like he's talking into a tin can ) and I am wondering why they didn't send them to me in a clearer form such as MP3. I am about to ask this same question to the person sending me the test but I thought I'd ask it here too. Is the .wav format the most common form of sound file for MT's? And if so, what's the best program to listen to these files in? I have Windows Media player, Real Player and WinAmp on my computer. Are there programs that MT's use to better hear these files? I hate to sound like a total dummy here but I'm new to this and when I went to school several years ago for MT, we only did tapes--not digital! If anyone can give me some info here, I'd really appreciate it!
Best,
RT

i need sample voice files to practice
I need help. I am a recent graduate and I would like to know what websites offer free sample voice files where I can practice. Thanks
I send my wav. files back and Encrypt them

I'm confused ... you should be opening the voice files (sm)
in express scribe or some program like that. Word 2007 is used only for typing the actual files you're listening too, it has nothing to do with opening .wav files or anything other than text files.
NOW versus KNOW - Learn the difference as you will need to KNOW it at some point.
Trust me, you don't scare us. As experienced professionals, we know what happens to MTs with delusions of grandeur; they are in for a very rude awakening, to say the very least.
local hospital versus national
Hi,
I was with a national company and, like you, only did about 1200 lines per day at 7.5 cpl with 18 months in. I felt like I was never going to make the big bucks!
In May, I resigned from the national co. and went to work locally. After a short 1-month in-house training, I am working from home again. This hospital has some great normals to use and yesterday, I did 2200 lines!!!!!
Finding a good fit is the hardest part. Thankfully, I think I have found mine!!!!! Just keep in mind that there are other options out there. GOOD LUCK!!!!
Shorthand versus Instant text
Looking for a great word Expander to work with. I am clueless at this point as to what is out there and how they even work. I have had ShortHand and Instant Text suggested to me, but not sure which one will be better.
Thanks for your help.
One main problem with AutoCorrect is that the normal.dot and .acl files
If you're going to rely on AutoCorrect as your Expander utility, make sure you back up your normal.dot and .acl files regularly. If the files become corrupt (and with Word it's usually just a matter of time), you will lose all your AutoCorrect and AutoText entries, macros, and some other customizations.
dictation
Approximately how many hours of transcription would it take if you have one hour of dictation and can type about 80 wpm. Thanks.
dictation help
What if the MD is dictating, you are a 1/4 of the way through, he is interrupted by a colleague, then comes back starting with the beginning again (prepped & draped, etc)then seems to go in a totally different direction and subject then where he left off? Do you continue to type what he is saying, even though it makes no sense to the first part of the report? Do you make a note of it for the editor? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, VERY NEW MT...
Help with dictation please
Hello,
I'm stumped on a sentence in a discharge summary I am working on. As part of the Laboratory Data section, the doctor says:
Chest x-ray showed no TECUTE PROCESSED. Well, at least it sounds like tecute processed but that obviously doesn't make sense! Any ideas?
Dictation tapes
Where can someone get dictation tapes for practicing? I am already set up at home and would like to keep practicing until I get a job. I would not like to invest alot of money into these tapes.
Dictation tapes
Thanks
Difficult dictation.....
I was hoping that someone could give me some advise for difficult doctors that dictate with a very strong acient!! I need help!! Any advise would be great!
Thank you!
Try speeding up the dictation just a bit. sm.
Seriously, speeding it up just a little sometimes smooths it out. I got this tip from an MT with over 20 years experience. I wouldn't do it the first time through, but when you're listening again, try it.
Dictation volume
Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone else was having problems with the level of dictation available to transcribe. I work for Eagle's Landing and I'm finding that the dictation is very sporadic. When I first started it wasn't that way but ever since Hurricane Katrina the dictation has been low. Right after Hurricane Katrina there would be days with no dictation because the docs were gone to New Orleans to help out. Now the doctors are back but there is still the same problem. I am actually going to be set up on a second account so that should help me but I'm not sure when they are going to do that for me. I've heard that we are getting several new clients soon so maybe that will help. What I've started doing basically is actually keeping up with the amount of work per hour (low, medium, high volume, comp issues, etc)on an excel spreadsheet for each day of the week, I'm going to continue doing that for each week of the month, so eventually I will have several months I can look over and see if this is a chronic problem or an acute problem. I'm really hoping that this is just a temporary slow period of time. I think my frustration has also been compounded by the fact that I've had computer problems myself, the system at Eagle's Landing goes down sometimes for maintanence, and just being a new MT.
I really do plan to stick it out but I don't believe that the service would be honest with me if this is a problem that is going to be ongoing so I feel I need to keep my own records. Right now I'm living at home with my mom but eventually, in a year or so, I want to be able to move out and support myself so I need to see if this job has some stability. I understand there will be less stability than other jobs because that is how this industry is but I need enough stability to know that I can support myself atleast. As I said before in one of my earlier posts, I only started 3 months ago,(back in July) so I definitely know that the early frustrations just take time and experience to work through so I do plan on sticking it out. I guess my concern with lack of dictation is that it is something I cannot control, my speed is something I can control, I can work really hard and get better at that, but this is something I cannot. The problems with the sporadic dictation I would say have been going on since the middle of August, it does not seem like very long but it seems like forever when I'm trying to build up my speed and when I'm new at this. Anyway, I would appreciate some feedback on this from new MTs and more experienced MTs. Oh, also another thing I've noticed just from reading this message board and others is that a lot of MTs keep up with their line counts on a spread sheet. What I tend to do is watch my production based on the number of minutes I type. Should I be looking more at line count than minutes and also keeping track of that more closely? I have noticed that I do not follow my life count as diligently as others. And finally I want to thank everyone for the input I've already gotten from this board, it has been very helpful to me, and I have definitely taken the advice to heart and used it.
You don't record the dictation (see msg)
with the c-phone you dial in, and plug a foot pedal and headset into the phone itself and transcribe that way rather than hearing through your computer speakers. (I assume voicewriter is similar)
Practice Dictation
I'm looking for free practice dictation in oncology/hematology. I'm coming up with nothing on Google. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've got a job lined up, but I need more practice before I start. TIA for help!
Practice Dictation
I am starting the practice dictation portion of my training. The first examples were someone from the school that I chose doing the dictation and then I moved on to actual doctor reports.
My question: How common is it for doctors to talk like they have a mouthful of marbles? The first one was awful and there was no way I could decipher what he was saying. I had my husband listen to it and he looked at me like WTH?
The practice is on CD ... does that make any difference? Are the files that are received better in clarity?
This is really disheartening. I feel lost and am beginning to wonder if I can even do this.
I loaded the first 20 practice files and about half are understandable. The rest is a just a garbled mess.
Any input is sincerely appreciated.
Unfamiliar and foreign dictation (sm)
I'm sorry you had that experience! It's frustrating, but it's part and parcel of MT.
Everything "new" you encounter in MT will sound ghastly until you've gotten over the initial shock of it. Whether it's a new dictator, a new specialty, or a new accent, it will sound impossible. The trick to dealing with it lies in controlling your anxiety and frustration long enough that you can become used to it. This sounds easier than it is.
If it's a specialty you haven't done before, you need to get some training materials and work on them. That will give you the fundamentals you need, so that you can make some headway.
Learning to understand different accents is much like learning different languages. What sounds thick as mud to you at first will become clear as you learn the pronunciations typical of those speakers.
If you're encountering work that is "new" to you because it's an unfamiliar specialty AND a new and unfamiliar dictator with a different accent, you have a double or triple problem.
If you can't do a variety of clinical specialties and accents, you will have trouble until you build up your skills. You might consider doing the SUM program materials. They have a variety of specialties and include different accents.
Another thing you can do with the accents is to get samples of that dictator's reports from the service. They say the same things all the time, as you know. By comparing what you hear with the samples, you can figure out what they're saying and how they say it.
