Isn't that similar to which came first the chicken or the egg?
How to get experience without a job and how to get a job without experience? Do you have formal MT training?
This is similar to how I started out 19 years ago.
I was given the opportunity to transcribe for the radiology department and soon was asked to cross-train to other areas of the hospital to transcribe. Boy, did I learn a lot.
I remember one lady (I was only 18 when I started working at the hospital) after 3 years of vo-tech high school training. I used to get mad because she would make me look things up in the medical dictionary. She forced me to use my noggin. Once I got the hang of it, I thanked her again and again for being so hard on me. There was another lady who worked p.r.n., but she had her own clients. I learned a lot from her. I think of her often when I "can't go/have to work" even though I work from home. NOW, I know what she was talking about, but I have learned to manipulate my schedule to not miss out on anything.
different program, similar idea
The internship I speak of is not the Jumpstart program but is a similar program. I took part in a medical transcription course of study at a community college. In order to obtain my diploma I must complete the internship. I think it is a wonderful idea and provides experience, not to mention real world learning. I didn't determine before I started how the clock hours necessary would be calculated. I thought clock hours meant 8 hours per workday 5 days a week. Wrong! Lines typed are divided by 200 lph. Yea, way longer than 120 actual clock hours! That's okay but I wasn't given that information at the beginning which I think I should have been.
You learn things the hard way when you new and naive!!
It depends on what similar factors are
important to you. If you are interested in medicine, then maybe medical coding would work for you (Andrews has a program in this). If you are interested in transcription, then maybe general or legal transcription. If you just want to work at home with a flexible schedule, maybe Alpine Access or something similar.
Not open Yet!!!!
That's why they are not hiring?
ME too, I wish they would open it back up to us, with
strict rules and if you break them, you are out, that probably is too time-consuming, oh well. Great supportive board there.
Keep an open mind when looking for your first break.
For a first break into the business, you really need to welcome an in-office position. Not only is it a job doing what you say you want to do, but you may actually get guidance from an experienced MT and learn more than you could ever learn alone.
You open your voice files with sm
whatever software you're using for voice, i.e. Wavpedal, etc. You don't open them in Word.
Get a solid education and doors will open
Many companies waive the 2-year experience requirement for testing if you attend M-Tec or Andrews. Their schools consistently produce grads who are ready to hit the ground running. I hire those grads every chance I get. I have found those with "local community college" education sorely lacking in even the basics to be a success.
Would the open positions be for acute care or clinic? FT or PT? Thx! nm

I think people with their eyes wide open are just trying to pass the news along...sm
to some unsuspected starry-eyed matchbook cover readers. A lot of MT's ARE going back to school and the ones that aren't are posting desparate posts saying "what else can I do?" I believe in being prepared...how are you going to go back to school if you don't have a job (or aren't saving some money now?) Believe me, I've been home with my kids too, and make a pretty penny doing this job. But I feel bad for all those people who A) sink thousands of dollars into getting their MT "certificate" from the schools, then B) come and post on this board with everybody else saying "how can we get experienc if no one will hire us, and C) knowing the MT rates are falling, not rising. Just want to give them a heads up on what the rest of us are seeing. Sure, there's a few folks that are still making good money BUT I've been in this field for 25 years now and there's a definite trend afoot here...
WP5.1 how is it different from WP Office 11??nm
nm
Each office is fifferent, even within each
office there may be some who prefer tapes versus handheld or some other type of system. If you're going to offer a service you need to have a game plan. Will you offer handhelds if they don't have them, what software do you have to download the files securely from the office to you, are you going to just upload the completed work back or will you do a remote print, are you going to store completed work for them or are they, etc.
Office Pro 2003
I can't seem to find notepad in Office Pro 2003. Does anyone know where it is?
How do you get around this besides working in an office first?
or maybe I am expecting too much, and it just is not going to work without some office time before me.
I am not sure how anyone expects a new graduate to get a job when everyone wants experience; however nobody is willing to hire us so that we may gain that experience.
You do your time in an office first, like the
majority of the rest of the MTs did. That's how it works.
MQ employees at St Louis office
I just accepted a SE position with MQ at the St Louis office. Can I get some opinions of others that work for this office? I will be part-time, so I'm wondering about their training and how well are you treated. Do you get answers to your questions quickly and do you get feedback regularly.
Are you at the current doc's office all day long? sm
I was thinking that if he wants you to transcribe from his office, could you get that done in a couple of hours, and then go home to work from there? I started my "home work" with one doc. She raved about me so much that all her doc friends called me to get me to work for them. Sit down with your doc and feel him out. He could be a real help to you! Good luck!
Call their office to see which one they would recommend for you :) nm

From what I can see, it's not MS Word, it's "Opal Office"
and they are charging $11.95 for it, and it's a ripoff because they stole the program from "Open Office" which is totally free and are selling it for $11.95. At least that's how it looks to me.
I had to start out in the office of a local hospital sm
for a year, then went home. I didn't want to go home to be honest, too many distractions and my twins were babies at the time, but they were sending everyone home. I really don't know what to tell anyone when I see these posts. There are lots of companies out there needing help and you'd think that if they are willing to send their work overseas to people that don't even speak English as a first language, then they would be willing to hire a new graduate. I would be a little more pushy, offer to do 30 days at a lower cent per line then have a review, something like that. Keep pushing, someone will see potential and take a chance on you. Honestly, these companies that don't hire new graduates I just don't get it. I work for a small local company that is always behind on their work and I always suggest they hire some new graduates from the two local schools, but they never do it, they just sit and wait for people to apply. Good luck!
office experience + Medical Terminology - Is it enough?
Hi everyone,
I've been wanting to take an MT course for quite some time, but still haven't managed to come up with enough money. So - I was wondering. Do you think for a beginning MT job in a hospital, would previous office experience plus courses in Medical Terminology be enough? Have any of you successfully done this?
Thanks for the help!
Christina
Maybe try a specialty doctor's office first. Most times
they will hire you, in-house, and go from there.
It is very difficult to find an at-home MT job just starting out; however, there are some companies who will hire you. I personally do not know of any, but if you do a search, maybe you will come across one.
When I started 25 years ago, it was in a private physician's office and I just moved on up from there.
Good luck!
Just be careful not to get Office Works or Suite
that is advertised as compatible with MS Word. I accidentally bought that once, the packaging was similar and the box said it did everything MS Word did. Well, it sort of did, but that software changed every document I had in my entire computer upon installation to its own version. That certainly would not have worked in transcribing and transmitting reports. While it did work with Word as the packaging said, it did so by changing Word to something else. I don't recall the exact name of this, but just read the packaging carefully and get Microsoft and not a lookalike. Just wanted to give you a heads up to avoid one of my many mistakes. Good luck.
Newly Graduate from Medical Office Occupations
I know that this may sound like a plug for a job but it isn't I have been down with a newly replaced knee. Now that I can find a job having trouble because I do want to become a home Medica Transcriber and no one will listen to me. How do I go about getting to Medical Transcribing so that I can do it at home. Please I could help with any solutions. Please email me at the above email address.
Ashley, have you considered getting accounts directly with a doctor's office?
I have been very successful as an independent contractor. You should really consider it.
I started out in the file room of the urology office I used to work for.
They had a new peds uro coming in and wanted another typist. The only schooling I had was 2 semesters of medical terminology at our local community college. Granted that was in 1990, and I at least had a working knowledge of urology, but it can be done if you really want it bad enough.
maybe take a medical term course and start with physical therapy office

for free
Don't worry, before long, you ALL will be doing it for free! I mean come on, they already pay MTs like they are tomato pickers or putting soles on shoes! If you work for nothing, then 2 cents or 3 cents a line is going to sound good to you and believe me, it will come to that. WHAT CAN'T YOU AND OTHERS RESPECT YOURSELVES AS HUMAN BEINGS WITH BRAINS AND WORK A NORMAL AMOUNT OF HOURS FOR A REGULAR PAYCHECK LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD!? There are so many transcribers I have heard carry on about how much money they make -- ask them, how long they actually are working and what they are paid and you will see the true picture.

I quit my stressful job to do MT full throttle. My hubby and I planned it for months. In MHO, MT is not something you should squeeze in at the end of your day. There is FAR too much to learn not to be able to give it your full attention. I looked at it like a job to learn. When I was not working on the course itself I was looking at message boards, seeing if I could figure out the answers on the word help boards, reading the AAMT magazine, you name it. I breathed, slept, and ate MT. Now, not everyone is as anal as this, but for me this worked. I had numerous job offers before I even graduated based on my test results, so I feel I got out of it what I put into it! Good luck to you.

SM means "see message"
NM means "no message"
LP is a new one. I don't know what that means or I even saw that before. Hope this helps!!

Just about anywhere you ask, you will hear that Andrews School, M-TEC, and Career Step are the best, and the only ones worth the money. Many companies will waive the 2-years' experience requirement if you graduate from one of these three schools.
Good luck to you.

I know you don't want to hear it, but you are wasting your money if you choose one of the cheaper schools. You will not be able to get a job afterwards. Most of the big companies will waive the 2-years' experience requirement if you go to Andrews, M-TEC, or Career Step, but not for the other schools. You get what you pay for. Those 3 schools will also help you get a job after you graduate.

Northeast Transcription email gail@ntitech.com - they were looking for new grads. Focus Infomatics hires new grads, I think. Good luck and keep trying.

Precyse Solutions and Spheris take MTs with dial-up. Precyse Solutions is smaller with about 300 MTs and Spheris has about 1000.

Any purchases:
computers
equipment
desk/chair
books
supplies
Gas for any deliveries or pickups to customers.
A percentage of your rent or mortgage and utilities IF you have a separate room dedicated to work.
Telephone and Internet expenses if applicable.
Maybe that will help you get started. It is best to ask an accountant. :)
free books
Am definitely interested in your free books, just get them weighed at the post office and let me know what media mail rate will be, also be sure to include the cost of whatever packaging you need to use.
Thanks for the generous offer.
AutoHotkey is free (sm)

You can use it to create macros to shorten common tasks or use it as an expander.
Work for free
I would be willing to work for free or intern for a company that would give me practical experience, especially if they would consider me for a paid position once I have gotten my feet wet. I would much rather spend 8 months doing real work than just going through a formal program if possible.
Thanks for your response!
Check this out, it's free!
The page numbers don't match, but you should be able to find what you're looking for.

thank you
Heck, I don't see why not...see inside
It'll at least give you good experience in testing. However, actually getting the job is a long shot unless you ace the test or have a good MT education to your credit.
Well, there's this link inside, too...

You need to check for spelling errors yourself. See below.
Before you hit the send button, Char, you might want to stop and give some consideration to your audience. Many of the people who read this board are people who hire MTs. If your post is sloppy and full of ignorance, you will be dismissed as a sloppy, ignorant MT, and any potential employer will not give you another thought. If your post is intelligent, well written, and error-free, you just might be contacted by someone willing to give you a chance. I have contacted three newbies who posted intelligent comments in complete, accureately-spelled (accurately)sentences on this board. I hired one of them. I would have been happy to hire the other two, but two other MTSOs had (2 had) had the same idea after seeing their posts and beat me to it. Think about that the next time you want to post something incoherent and badly spelled because "it's just a message board". A sloppy, incoherent post might (be?) hilarious to you, but to someone assessing your suitability for employment, it's just really depressing.

At your desktop, right click and choose Properties, Advanced, under item at the drop-down arrow select window, click on the drop-down arrow by color 1, and either choose one of those colors or select "other" and you can create whatever color you want. It will have no affect on your document, just your screen.
I used to use light purple, now I use light blue. I change colors just to alleviate boredom. :)

I am a CS graduate, and if I had it to do over, I'd choose Andrews School or M-TEC.
Almost all of the books you receive from CS are written by the lady who started the school. The other 2 schools use real reference books that contain a LOT more. That's one reason the other 2 schools cost more.
Also, the other 2 schools have real instructors who go over your work and point out errors, and help you along. At CS, your work is "automatically compared" against the same report done at some unknown time and place by some unknown MT, who may or may not have done it correctly. All you get is a comparison between the two, it only shows the differences, like holding two pieces of paper up to the light to see if everything matches. Whenever there are differences, it's up to YOU to figure out which one is correct. The only time a real person actually looks over your work is when you take your final exam (which over 50% of students fail the first time they take it, and that statement comes directly from CS itself, not from me).
Yes, I did get a work-at-home job after graduating from CS. But I feel my first year of work was a lot harder, I spent a lot more time looking things up, there were a lot of things I would have learned at Andrews or M-Tec that I didn't learn at CS.
