HHELP! Any MAC computer students/MTs out there studying? or working?

there?? I was strongly leaning towards M-Tec for schooling, and just read you can't use a MAC computer while studying there. I can't afford to switch over to a PC right now.
Has anyone found that using a MAC handicapped them?
Please advise! TIA! -Anne

or it means the job market has shrunk while you were busy studying...welcome
to reality. You may want to just cut your losses and get back in school for Medical Assistant, nursing or something. From here, it only gets worse, honey.
Do you use their computer or your own?
xx
I use my own computer
the company I work for does not offer use of equipment. I did get my foot pedal from them though. I work on the Dictaphone ExText platform and really love it. They sent me the Dictaphone foot pedal and a really nice pair of Dictaphone headphones.
computer without vista
I purchased a new dell laptop about 6 months ago and was able to get it with Windows XP. I would also recommend if you go that route that you elect to have Word 2003 rather than the newer Word 2007 installed on it as it is getting very difficult to find Word 2003 anymore and it is very expensive.

dictaphone to computer
I recently purchased a dictaphone for a job that didn't work out. Does anyone know if there is an adaptor cable that will allow the footpedal from the phone to work as a USB on my computer?
you can't put them on the computer unless you have a transcriber to play them on. nm

Usage of company computer?
I have done a few searches, and it seems that there are only a few companies that offer a computer for your own in-home use. I'm just curious about this. Do the majority of the companies offer their own computers and are just not saying on their websites? Do most of them charge a monthly fee for the use?...or do you mainly have to provide your own computer?
Thanks in advance for any info.
which companies provide a computer?
Hello, which companies provide a computer? Just curious.
Wireless does not mean secured computer......
If you have a wireless card, you can use a public "hot spot" which is public wireless access but anyone with a wireless card can also access your computer and you will not know it.
Here's a site that may answer a few of your questions. Just remember, public places can be dangerous regardless with regards to your private information on a laptop. Try to at least set up the precautions listed below.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/tabletpc/expert/russell_tabletlaptop.mspx
You can still get a VISTA-free computer
from Tiger Direct if you ask. At least I got one not too long ago.
when I bought my computer last fall
it came with Vista. Nothing came with XP anymore but I had to have it. (Now Dell is getting smart and selling computers with XP again.) We just put a copy of XP on. We always have the option to restart and boot Vista. You don't have to dump it. This was a huge headache, though, because we had to download a bunch of other drivers for sound, video, etc., and I would recommend just getting a computer with XP. We really like our Dell computer.
I highly suggest you get a computer with XP - sm
99% of the companies out there do not use Vista. So either get your hands on an old one or buy a new one with it (I special ordered mine from Dell), or reformat your existing computer and get rid of the Vista. I use an Aircard which works great with every company I have tried it on so far, I would just say yeah, I have high speed....you do, it is just wireless. I had some trouble recently and the tech guys kept telling me my aircard would not work, etc. I told them I had been using it for 6 months just fine.....turns out it was a problem at their end and once they fixed it my aircard worked fine as always. Try www.lts-inc.com they will hire newbies and always have lots of work.
students unite
Anyone else out there taking the At-home professions medical transcriptionist course? As you can see many transciptionists have a network of other transcriptionists to ask questions. If anyone is interested in having a sounding board and being a sounding board I would be glad to buddy up. I am in the 5th course 42 lesson and I am finding some of the verbage difficult to understand due to the foreign accents and various other crap on the dictation and I speak spanish and understand it as well, So I am used to listening for this type of thing. Maybe I am just crazy but if your are looking for help I have a 98% in the course. IM me or email me - if we are all set up on IM we can have pretty much immediate answers if we know them- otherwise it is back to the message boards.
Support for AHP students and graduates
I would like to get any support or encouragement from other people who have either completed the AHP course or are currently taking it. I have read so many negative comments in here about the program. I am about 3/4 through the MT course and am now getting a little worried. Please share your stories and job searches to give the rest of us some hope. If all you have is negative comments, please keep them to yourself. This is meant to be a support group. Thanks!
Sometimes hire students before they graduate. nm

calling all M-Tec students/grads...
How many hours a week did it take any of you to complete the Tier 1-Premier program in 12 months or LESS? Is it possible to still work 30 hrs/wk and do this?
New Grads and students beware
DO NOT WORK FOR TOTH TRANSCRIPTION. They will not pay you, and they prey on new grads. There have been MANY people come forward claiming the same thing. They are a complete scam. Take my warning, do not work for them.
inputs on buying a laptop computer to use for work
I am a newbie and looking into buying a laptop computer to use for work. I would like to know if that is okay. The reason that I wanted a laptop computer for work is because I wanted to be still working wherever I maybe even if I am not at home. Is that possible? If it's okay, what laptop computers do you recommend?
THanks for the imput. My computer is downstairs also, but I usually have them play upstairs when I
I have been thinking about purchasing a better type of headphone that really block out the sound. I know they are spendy but are they worth it? Any input?
oops!...can't take on anymore students/trainees ...nm
.
Unfortunately, the schools who hold "seminars" are the ones who rip off students. sm
It will be very difficult (but not impossible) to find a job with an "education" from those shysters. You will definitely be able to get a job after completing the program from Andrews or M-TEC, the money is worth it. Many companies waive the 2-year experience requirement and will let you take their employment test (which you should have no trouble passing) if you attend Andrews or M-TEC. Sorry you got suckered, but you're certainly not the first! (and unfortunately won't be the last)
Current and former students from all schools and programs -
I would prefer to discuss via email as I don't want input from those who have not attended any of the MT educational programs and I don't want to incite arguments, etc.
I just need some answers and insight on your experience, etc. I have some questions I can send to you and would truly appreciate your input.
Thx
Andrews teaches Canadian students.
Same goes for Andrews -- you can train with them from Canada and they have a number of Canadian students.
The suggestion to call the directors and talk to them is a good one. The schools teach much the same material and achieve the same ends.
Andrews does have an entrance exam, so be sure to take that first. Some find the decision much easier after that . . . :)
I'm going to say at an outside source where you attend classes - college, business, or computer

Career Step students PAY to train for Spheris
"Beginning in 2005, a select group of Career Step students will be offered the opportunity to participate in the exclusive Spheris Training Track. The Spheris Training Track has been designed around Career Step’s proprietary medical transcription training program. Portions of the training program have been tailored to meet the specific training and hiring requirements of Spheris." So goody. YOU pay Career Step for your Spheris training.
The solution then would be for potential students to contact the employers
If someone wants to work at home for a national company, contact them. If you want to work on site for a local hospital, contact them.
My bet is that the national services and some of the other large services will prefer certain schools and will not test others. I'll also bet that the local hospitals will have never heard of any medical transcription school and will prefer the school down the street. Of course they may not hire new graduates, so once that person graduates from the school down the street, they may have to go to work for a private physician's office for a couple of years. Do you disagree with that?

Need advice from current or former Andrews School students
Hello,
My daughter wants to go to school to become an MT and wants me to recommend the best school. I've been an MT for 10 years and went to a community college, but she needs an online school. I have heard on this board that Andrews is one of the best schools.
Could anyone who has experience with this school tell me about their experience, whether the school is work-at-your-own pace, and just their general likes/dislikes about the school, and most of all--do you feel it prepared you well to begin your career (for those who have graduated and started working). I would appreciate any info so much!
Thanks so much!!!
A really good school won't need to have "specials" to reel in students.
Sometimes they even have a waiting list, despite being more expensive. It's because they are so much better. You get what you pay for. Check out all the desperate posts on this and other MT boards of people who saved money by choosing cheaper courses and now can't get a job.
CAI School - Any Current Students/Recent Graduates?
Hi Everyone: Have any of you ever heard of the CAI School of Medical Transcription? Any current students or graduates out there? I've been checking out their website and they seem to have a terrific program. I've searched the archives and the last posting on this school was from 2006. It got rave reviews then, just checking on the school now. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! FYI, the website address is http://www.caihometype.com
Doesn't land her a check when she sends potentia students away
Private schools have the luxury of not having to enroll people when they know they can't do the work. Public schools do. Private school managers, owners, or directors can be honest with you and tell if you if they don't think you can type or spell well enough and would be wasting their time and your money.
working
I finished my course and now I am trying to work from home, but everyone wants experience. What can I do?
Working for them and....
it seems to be going well. I am a newbie and they are giving me a chance, which is more than others would do. All I can say is give it a try.
But if you are working as an IC, YOU
should purchase the software, pedal, etc. needed to do the job. Otherwise you are trying to be an employee. But at any rate, no I would not pay an 11.95 admin fee to get a job. Why don't you get a job somewhere else for free if you want a job?
If you are already working, why do you (sm)
need to change jobs? You said you have references from the doctors you are working for. So by working for do you mean transcribing for, or other work?
I'm confused.
? working as IC
I have a lot of questions. When you work as an IC do you need to set up as a business and file your taxes in a business name or -- just add the income thru a 1099. We file a joint return.
if not working, i would still take it.
knowledge has no price. if she is not working right now, than gaining the experience is well worth it.
If she is earning a living transcribing, than no don't quit your job to earn $0 and learn.
I, on the other hand, think the offer is generous. It takes me just as long to proof a report than it does to transcribe it myself. Why would I want to pay someone to transcribe it, if I am going to have to proof it. It just does not make sense.
Yes, I am working now but
not for A Scripts
Keep working
I plan to keep working FT at the university where I currently work. I have talked to a few people who did Career Step for their training and were pleased I am trying to weigh the $1600 price tag with what realistic options that I would have upon completion.
Working at home
Just because you work at home does not automatically mean you get to pick your own hours. MT companies all have different needs, and coverage is needed, in many cases, 24 hours a day. Many companies will allow you to pick your own hours, but they will expect you stick to that schedule. Other companies will let you work anytime in a 12-hour window. It all just depends on the needs of the company.
working for peanuts
I am new to this board, but I will be glad to work for peanuts if I can just get my foot in the door!! Please feel free to contact me about any lesser paying jobs that are available. I'm articulate, but I still know I have to pay my dues.
Student and working
Well I can say this, I am a MT student at Career Step now. I am also taking their coding program. I have been subcontracting for a few months now for a couple of different places and I was just hired by another place yesterday so it can be done.
working at home
I was just wondering what insurance company you worked for at home and what the name of the place was in New England. I would settle for something like this until I could get into a hospital.
Thank you!
Just Started working PT
I just graduated from Career Step and got a PT job within 2 weeks. Mind you it was the only company that was interested in doing the PT thing, plus I have dail-up, so I was really limited on my options. But, so you know, PT jobs are out there. Good luck.
They are probably all busy working! LOL
x
Wow! I could be working for the same company!
I felt the exact same as you do!! After six months I am finally on paid status, but the pay is not much. Good luck! Let me know if you find anything better!
working in a hospital
I work for a hospital and have for 20 years. I am an at-home MT.. I am a full-time employee just like anyone who has to physical go there everday. The pay is much better and benefits too.. There are some still out there.
working from home
I agree with the last post. It's so hard to get hired with a company. I was in the same situation you are....just finished school, had a baby, wanted to stay at home and do transcription. So, during one of my office visits, I got the nerve up and asked my OB doc if I could do their transcription and they said yes!!!! Their office manager was doing it and she hated it. It was great!!! I then got another account on recommendation from that office manager. I think this is more doable for you than working with a baby, meeting quotas, not being able to pass tests, etc. And, you may like "having" to get out of the house to pick up tapes! I know I did! It was a reason to get out every other day or so. Also, you may have some flexibiltiy with having your husband or friend pick up and drop off your work. I did that also. One time, the office manager dropped it off to me because she lived nearby!!!!! Good luck!!
working from home
That is encouraging because if someone has been a Transcriptionist for twenty years and still has to leave blanks then there is hope for us newbies!
working from home
Have you tried testing with Medi-Voxx? They gave me a shot right out of school. I'm 53 and my kids are grown but I only wanted to work from home. I'm still with them after a little over a year and they are a great company that took a chance on me as a newbie.
