well-regarded MT schools, schools such as Andrews, M-Tec, and Career Step. Unfortunately, PCDI has a very poor reputation among MT employers, so it might be that that is causing the problem rather than lack of experience since many well-known MT employers will waive the two-year experience requirement for graduates of schools that are known to turn out job-ready MTs (Andrews, M-Tec, and Career Step). You might have better luck with a local doctor's office or clinic that does only one specialty. If you continue to have difficulty finding work, you might want to consider supplementing whatever training you got throught PCDI with a course from one of the "Big Three". Their graduates generally have several job offers upon graduation, plus those schools provide placement advice and assistance to their graduates.

I don't pay them. Employers test our grads and hire them if they do well
I don't pay them. Employers test our grads and hire them if they do well. I appreciate the fact that they are kind enough to let our graduates test for them, but I don't give them any money. None. Zero. Zilch. Nothing. Thanks for asking so that I have the opportunity to make that very clear.
Ask The Employers
If you want to work from home, ask the national employers, because that's who you'll turn to when you are ready to get a job.

If you want to work for a local hospital, on site, ask them where you should go to school. Then ask them if they actually hire people who graduate from that school. I've heard that some of the local people recommend a school but don't hire graduates after they take that advice to go to a local community college or vo-tech.
I'm not sure employers care, I would make sure

to pick a training program on the AHDI list ...

but the employers are going to fire you when they find out you misled them
When people put CMT after their name, they are assumed to have passed the CMT exam through AAMT. We could all put MD after our names too and call ourselves Minnie Duck, but we won't get far.
Employers don't check references? Not very wise of them
We're dealing with confidential work. You're telling me that there are still MT employers who don't care enough about the quality and accountability of the work that they would "bother" to check references? You are going to put confidential patient records in the hands of people with no attempt to even see if they are who and what they say they are? No educational references checked? No past employment checked?
There is a reason employers are scrambling to get these grads!
Unlike people who have years of experience typing for a few docs and little medical knowledge, these grads have the equivalent of 2 years of experience AND understand what they are typing. You go right on hiring those not associated with the Top 3 - just leaves better pickings for the rest of us!
Employers = Verifiable companies with job offers, often well-known nationals
What we're looking for is a source for helpful information that results in good decisions. Ask the employers means, ask employers who give their names, the names of their companies, and are job providers. That information has to be verifiable in order to be useful. No offense personally. Information is just not helpful unless it comes from an identifiable source and can be verified as being authentic and reputable.
the previous post said it only matters what the employers think. I'm an employer and that's wh
think. What exactly do you identify as **balderdash**?
The solution then would be for potential students to contact the employers
If someone wants to work at home for a national company, contact them. If you want to work on site for a local hospital, contact them.

My bet is that the national services and some of the other large services will prefer certain schools and will not test others. I'll also bet that the local hospitals will have never heard of any medical transcription school and will prefer the school down the street. Of course they may not hire new graduates, so once that person graduates from the school down the street, they may have to go to work for a private physician's office for a couple of years. Do you disagree with that?
agree - nationals make worst employers and here's why
I've been with my current national for a year now, and I'm burnt out.  I do acute care work, struggle with lots of ESLs, and work on several different accounts.  For the past 6 months or so, work has been very low on my primary, and I bounce around from account to account, and I only work part-time.  I hate that.  I wish I had a primary that kept me busy and only in rare instances would I have to work on my secondary or tertiary and so on.  Instead, I may work on 4 different accounts in one day just to get in 500 lines, and of course it takes me longer to do that on accounts other than my primary because those accounts have a lot more doctors.  Getting the same ones isn't a daily occurrence, and if you do, they're the difficult dictators.  Is this normal?  It's hard for me to shop around and look for a better national to work for because I don't have high-speed internet access, and some not only want high-speed access, but they also are very specific about what type you need to work for them.  I feel stuck, but I am grateful to have a job and that it's not flipping burgers or working in retail.  Been there, done that....in my youth.
Former employers do not give "true" references. Because of lawsuits. So irrelevant.

Graduates, has anyone found
that M-Tec's curriculum was superior to Career Step? Also, for M-Tec grads, were you able to repeat a section (if you tested poorly) until you got it right, and improved? Was there a limit on how many times you could re-test on any given area (I'm thinking of my weaker areas that might need extra time.)
TIA! :) -Anne
Who hires new graduates?
Can anyone give me some ideas on who hires new graduates?  I'm having no luck.....
Looking for graduates from either CAI or Medtranscription.com

Hi,

I'm looking into MT programs, and am looking for feedback from graduates of either CAI, or Medtranscription.com

Would like to know about your experiences with these places! Thanks! Laura

Any MT Advantage graduates?

I'm looking at the MT Advantage Career Center.  I would like to hear from anyone who has taken their course.  I'd like to know how successful their students are at obtaining jobs after completing the course.

Thanks Much!

It isn't just new graduates. The job market...sm
is not what it was in MT. I guess the economy has affected it.
One of the hardest things I've done was find a job after MT school. I searched and searched. I finally just kept applying and somone gave me a chance.
Support for AHP students and graduates
I would like to get any support or encouragement from other people who have either completed the AHP course or are currently taking it.  I have read so many negative comments in here about the program.  I am about 3/4 through the MT course and am now getting a little worried.  Please share your stories and job searches to give the rest of us some hope.  If all you have is negative comments, please keep them to yourself.  This is meant to be a support group.  Thanks!
WHAT??? to say that if a newbie graduates from a top three, it makes
her as qualified as someone with two years experience. Puhleeze. That is simply wrong.
Just telling the truth. Many of their graduates
come here and say the same thing.  Their program stinks.  Any company that advertises on matchbooks and TV you really have to wonder how good they are.   You never hear of M-Tec or Andrews advertising.
Spheris hires new graduates
Good luck!
Are there any companies hiring graduates?

I graduated from Career Step program and looking for a second shift position.  Does anybody work for a company that is currently hiring graduates?  Thanks for any responses!

The better schools are not having problems placing graduates
I'm asking why the community colleges can't do the same thing. Why can't they go take the approval test with AAMT and prove that they are just as good as the so-called best schools, the ones that are approved because they were able to pass that test. Maybe that would help them be able to get employers to hire their students. Can they not pass that test?
any new graduates live in Orange County California.
From what I gather, and remember as I was in your shoes 15 years ago, to get a job is tough.  Are new graduates interested in working in externship program and a more experienced transcriptionist's residence for maybe 6-7 cents per line???  I have been pondering this and would appreciate any feedback.
I've seen plenty of these graduates scrounging for work.
This board isn't the only board in town, and I've seen many of the grads from your favorite schools searching for work just like everyone else. Just because "you" haven't seen it here doesn't mean it's not happening!

Besides, these schools are mostly affiliated with nationals, which IMO, stink anyhow. I'd much rather work for a nice small private. Nationals are not the be-all and end-all by any means, and they work with just a couple of the big boys. The ones who take the biggest advantage of their employees!

Keep looking Alicia. Don't listen to the school cheerleaders.
Are there companies offering 7 cents a line to new graduates? sm
This person has been offered 6 cents a line but I know the company and getting a raise will be like pulling teeth even if you do excellent work. This graduate will be doing acute care and feel like 6 cents is okay for clinic but 7 cents is more in line for acute care. This student graduated with honors from MT course.
Spheris hires entry level graduates from
at 5.5 cpl, they pay direct deposit on time, insurance not that great (large deductible) and all the usual FT benefits. Only PT benefit is 401K. My supervisor, QA people, and accounts have all been decent, 4-1/2 years into it.
CAI School - Any Current Students/Recent Graduates?
Hi Everyone:
Have any of you ever heard of the CAI School of Medical Transcription? Any current students or graduates out there?

I've been checking out their website and they seem to have a terrific program.  I've searched the archives and the last posting on this school was from 2006.  It got rave reviews then, just checking on the school now.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

FYI, the website address is http://www.caihometype.com

The courses worth taking are M-Tec and Andrews. Their graduates

are usually able to get jobs without 2 years of experience that is normally required.  Is if worth it?  Do you have small children, a husband, do you want a social life - then no it isn't worth it.  If you just want to do this PT, in addition to a FT job, it might be okay for a short time, but it gets harder and harder to make a living as an MT.  A lot of companies use offshore MTs, they get the good work and the crap gets left for us, or it all goes and we get stuck editing it for pennies and you end up working for minimum wage.  You'll also burn out in a short time trying to do both.

if there is just you and you don't care to have a life then it would be okay and if you have a knack for it you can make some decent money.  If you are a respiratory tech in a hospital talk to people in your department.  Maybe you can start out doing work-related transcription without having to go to school and you can get a small taste of what it is like to see if you really want to pursue it.

Found a company that is willing to give new MT graduates a chance

Hello,

A company called World Direct Transcription Services, called me yesterday. And she asked me a couple of questions, and then asked me if i would take 2 tests. I said yes of course! One test is a terms test, other is a typing test, also she wanted me to go to a certain website and take a speed typing test too. I will let everyone know today if i get hired.

Andrews, MTEC, and CareerStep produce graduates that are regularly hired. NM

Spheris hires graduates only from MTEC, Career Step, Andrews
nm
Well, at least you can see who not to hire, huh?! lol
lol
Most companies will not hire
you before completing your course unless you attend Career Step, M-Tech or Andrews. Allied is not good with helping you obtain a position, they only help with your resume and directing you towards companies that test. You can try testing with MT companies, but be aware that if you do not pass you may have to wait 6 months before retesting. Good luck.
Yes, Spheris will hire you...
You don't have to go to CS to get hired on at Spheris. You will have to pass their employment test (unless they have some kind of deal with TRS). The reason that Spheris started their program with Career Step is that the majority of CS grad new hires were unable to perform adequately in acute care positions with the education they received with the regular course materials.
Do they hire newbies?

What about all the "I can't get an MT job, nobody will hire me" posts?
Are all those people who are begging for work lying?

Just because some people get lucky and get jobs regardless of their training (or lack thereof) certainly doesn't mean everyone will get lucky.
New hire within a week, put no experience
I graduated from Career Step and a week later I had a job lined up as an IC.  In every application I sent out, I made sure that the employers were aware that I was just starting out.  I DID NOT say that I had 2 years of experience.  Career Step does not say to use their education as experience when applying.  Many companies recognize CS as a decent school and these companies will give us a shot.
Wow!!! Great response. Would hire you myself if I could!!!!!!

Sometimes hire students before they graduate. nm

Online that hire newbies
Does anyone have any resources for new 'graduates' of home study/unpaid internship training in transcription to find online companies that hire newbies to work from home? Thanks for your help! :)

Spheris will hire grads
from Career Step without even making them take an employment test. There are many other large nationals who allow grads from CS, M-Tec and especially Andrews to take their employment test, and if they pass, they are hired WITHOUT 2 years experience.

Don't call it BS if you don't know what you are talking about.
ANYONE will hire grads. That's not the issue...
poster was trying to say a graduate of the top 3 is equivalent in the job market to someone with 2 years experience.
Companies that Hire Newbies
Amy there are companies that hire newbies. Network with other transcripitionists at either a yahoo or msn group,or join as many as possible. They have links in their groups of companies that hire newbies. Hope that helps.
MTSOs are sometimes more willing to hire newbies.
It could be a good way to get experience and sometimes better than a national.
I would rather hire someone with years of experience
and could care less what school they went to, than someone with no experience who came from the Big Three.  Experience is valuable!

Which companies hire newbie MTs?

There are companies that will hire from the resumes and do
not post ads, so posting resume if your best bet for an at-home position.   You have to be careful though as there are some companies who are not honest companies so come here and ask or research the company board.   It should be much easier for you having graduated from M-Tec.

I think Axlotl does but they hire more experienced MTs only (something to shoot for in 3 years).
