And the MDs have seen the errors too,
and I think that's one reason they have given up on MT quality and aren't fighting offshored work or VR or hand-held systems changing from dictated notes to electronic check marks.
Don't believe the docs' prognosis...sm
That's why they call it the practice of medicine...'cause they still don't know what they're doin'!
I was told that my hubby wouldn't last 2 months and he's lasted 6 years....He's a totally inoperable heart patient (not even a transplant could he withstand) and the last year has been pretty rough.
You've got a great positive spirit and I hope you can persuade him to reconsider the transplant.
You're gonna need a lotta help starting from ground zero considering you can't spell cardiomyopathy.
Stedman's books are rather expensive for all the specialties and you're gonna need 'em (between $350-600) and a medical dictionary, dosages for meds, different dx (diagnoses) and multiple spellings like perineal and peroneal and what part of the body it pertains to. Microbiology, anatomy..the list goes on and on.
Check/google GIDEON (Global Infectious Disease & Epidemiology Network) for Taxa included in the microbiology module. Do you have hard copy of Grey's Anatomy? Oncology terms and meds are changing daily.
You can google on line spellings and procedures, but that takes quite a bit of time and you lose production time, ergo money. I suppose you can download Stedman's, but that too is going to be costly.
Good luck to you and your family. Cat
Here's the little I have scribbled on an old-timey steno pad...I have everything else in my head or on hard copy (paper/books). I'll check with a couple of other MTs who have better on-line references and try to get them to you.

If you'll check the company board you'll find
they have been talked about several times recently. They are an Indian company and no one has had anything good to say about them.
The egregious grammar errors are much worse than misspelling one word.
Congratulations is not a word used frequently in MT, it was just an example. I'm being honest (and trying to be helpful) suggesting she brush up on grammar. Definitely meant no offense.
Would the docs trancription system allow you to keep working for him from home? nm

i totally agree with Patty. In a docs ofc. is where it can all start.

Can you save your 2007 docs in 97-2003 format ? (sm)
That's what I do but if you need to get 2003, ebay is probably your best bet. :)

ESLs
ESLs are probably the most difficult dictators we must deal with as MTs aside from mush mouths or those who like to dictate while eating or using the bathroom! Unfortunately, there is no fool-proof way to "get them" it takes a lot of patience. I have found that sometimes speeding up the dictation just a tad can help...sometimes. And, sometimes repeating what they say in the same accent can help you get it. It may sound silly, but actually saying it out loud can help. I really wish that ESL docs would have an English speaking doctor do their dictation for them, but that is never going to happen. You just have to try to keep your sanity and not tear out all your hair. Just know that eventually you will become more proficient at doing ESLs, but there are always going to be those that are just really difficult that you can't understand. I usually have a number...say 10 times. If I back up and listen to the same word or phrase 10 times and I can't get it, it gets a blank and I move on and let QA have it. Good luck!
As to the ESLs, nope, you can't. They're everywhere, especially as
v
Even if you so happened to start out with no ESLs,
That can change overnight. The fact is that more likely than not in this business you are going to have to get used to them. :-(
You have to retrain your ears for ESLs and it takes
some time. If you tend to have the same ones regularly it really helps. What I do is, if I have blanks I just mark a blank and continue the report. When I finish the report I go back and relisten and I am usually able to get the blanks because I have figured out the accent. If you get QA back make copies of the reports for future reference. If you have a couple of reports by the same doctor and don't have to send them in immediately, sometimes you can pick up something in one report you didn't in another and you can go back and fill in. Getting up for a short break does help, also taking a deep breath and closing your eyes while you replay the dictation helps. I have dictators that I just cringe when I see them come up, but I just take a deep breath and just jump in. If I have the right frame of mind I find that even the difficult ones tend to go better. If I'm tired and frustrated I chose another dictator that isn't so bad and come back to the bad ones. I download via internet so I know who I have and I can do them in any order - I'm not cherrypicking.
I have had new ESL dictators and I swear they aren't speaking English and it can take me a couple of sentences to figure anything out and then I go back to the beginning and I can do it better then.
No ESLs on my account, but they're not hiring.
If the test file has such difficult ESLs, you don't want to work there anyway! It would be

Biggest thing ESLs do is put accent on the wrong syllable.

Because of the pronunciation of "diabetes" my doctor says the patient is "dia BEET ic" instead of diabetic.
Remembering this can often help you figure out a word - and you'll probably laugh when you do!
Lots of feet....
I never expected such a response, but wanted to say that I opened that door to one person, from about 60 responses, and am happy with the decision. Best of luck to you all!
I've done lots of looking
and have never seen a work from home opportunity that doesn't require a few years' experience.
There are lots of schools
I don't really know anything about the school you are referring to, but you are right about there being a lot of schools out there. I graduated from Meditec and don't hear much about them on the boards. What I have heard hasn't been so great. For all it is worth, I graduated, went through their internship program and am working as an IC MT now. I can't complain.
As far as schools go, sure you get what you pay for. But you also get out of a school the effort you put into it. I've tested with several companies and have never had even a hint from any of them that my school was a bad. Not everyone can afford the top three. Not only that, not everyone even starts out knowing about them. I'd already started in my training program when I learned the "top three" were even there. I did not frequent the boards then and that's the only place I see and hear this stuff.
Cut yourself lots of slack...
I worked so hard for so little money when I first started out. I wondered often if I had made a huge mistake becoming an MT. But you do gradually get the swing of it and learn how to "work smarter, not harder." For me, it really was more like a year or so before I was happy with the money I was making and the stress level. Try not to look at your hourly rate too often, and focus on the things that are getting easier for you and better. You may work long hours for a while, but look at the gradually increasing paycheck. It's a process. This too will pass!
I'm sure you will be fine. The fact that your work is looking so good that they're giving you more already is a GREAT sign that you have what it takes to succeed! I'm much more concerned about people who sacrifice quality for speed.
Keep it up! You'll get there!
No, lots of transcription work available, though
ASR and the like are becoming more prominent.
Lots of stress and long hours doing MT especially - sm
when you are first starting out. If you have to live on this, then in the beginning it is not a good choice. But if you are married and have a spouse income to live on and yours is just supplemental then that will work. When I first started 5 years ago I made $5K the first year, granted that was PT but I worked FT hours basically. I still work PT but practically FT, 30+ hours a week. I made about $16k this in 2006. Now I am not a fast typist (100-160 lph depending on dictator), and I find it hard to sit here and type for a solid 6 hours so I get easily distracted and goof off instead of working or else I am sure I could do $20K+ easy as I have more good than bad dictators. But some companies have mostly ESL and it is very hard to make money that way especially starting out. So many factors factor into to your income, your ability and typing speed, the ease of dictators, and if you can be dedicated and not get distracted. Obviously the more you can dedicate yourself and work consistently the more money you can make, just depends on your personal goals. Good Luck.

You'll get there!!
I just wanted to let you know that it is possible for a new MT to get a job with a national company. I did it, and I just graduated in December. Just keep putting out those resumes and testing. It will happen!! God bless!

Hello!
I'm actually quite new here too. Still trying to get used to the software. :-)
And i'll bet a lot of them have CMT behind their name. nm
You get what you pay for. Don't waste $442. You'll need it. SM
You can't learn MT for that.
I'll play!!
Aside from waiting for lessons to be graded and relentless job searching, I have nothing else to do that involves using my brain. Please post the word jumble. I will do my best!
Just hang in there....you'll get use to them

With Andrews and M-Tec you'll get a job.
With Andrews and M-Tec, you'll get a job, and it will be a good job. Simple as that.
They teach more and they teach it better.
Yes, sadly, everyone has heard of AHP, as well as the miseries their graduates go through trying to find a job. No major employer, to our knowledge, will waive the experience requirements for them. They don't even get an opportunity to take employment tests.
There are more, but I'm busy. You'll notice
they refused to resolve it until after the BBB contacted them.
they'll fire you for not enough QUANTITY too, though!
lol
I'm not sure...I'll try to find out the details
and let you know.
well, tell that the MT that just lost her job. I'm sure she'll feel better.
