I have a question about working as a U.S. citizen overseas and pay and hope someone here has some personal experience relative to the following: I am going to be moving to the Philippines soon after completion of my training. I will be there for a couple of years or so while working on getting my fiance back to the U.S. As a U.S. citizen , were I to be hired on with a National MTSO here would I be paid at U.S. wage rates or Philippine wage rates? NOW i have my email address in there if you want it, sheeeesh LOL Maybe instead of accusing others you need to address ... sm the issues brought up below, MTSO. No, you did not address all the issues...sm Such as... 1. There was a poster below that asked if they already had the foot pedal and software, what, if anything, would you charge them? 2. You did charge my friend for Express Scribe free shareware, and that was the only software she was asked to purchase. When I contacted you regarding employment, you did not ask me to test (which is what legitimate companies do). Instead, you just asked for $99 up front in the form of a money order or reloadable cash card for "shareware" and did not specify what it was. It wasn't until after my friend sent you the money that she discovered it was free shareware. 3. If you do need a new employee to purchase their own software, why can't they purchase it themselves, or have the money taken out of their first paychecks, as other companies do? I know that DocShuttle can be purchased by individuals so they can download and submit files, and individuals can purchase it themselves, and that is what other companies have asked people to do. 4. Why would they need to buy a foot pedal from you? Anyone can purchase one on their own. I am not trying to trash anyone. I am simply wanting to make people aware that there are scammers out there willing to prey on new MTs hungry for work. The real bottom line is, NEVER pay to work. If you're going to offer a service you need to have a game plan. Will you offer handhelds if they don't have them, what software do you have to download the files securely from the office to you, are you going to just upload the completed work back or will you do a remote print, are you going to store completed work for them or are they, etc. Office Pro 2003 I can't seem to find notepad in Office Pro 2003. Does anyone know where it is? How do you get around this besides working in an office first? or maybe I am expecting too much, and it just is not going to work without some office time before me.
I am not sure how anyone expects a new graduate to get a job when everyone wants experience; however nobody is willing to hire us so that we may gain that experience. You do your time in an office first, like the majority of the rest of the MTs did. That's how it works. MQ employees at St Louis office I just accepted a SE position with MQ at the St Louis office. Can I get some opinions of others that work for this office? I will be part-time, so I'm wondering about their training and how well are you treated. Do you get answers to your questions quickly and do you get feedback regularly. Are you at the current doc's office all day long? sm I was thinking that if he wants you to transcribe from his office, could you get that done in a couple of hours, and then go home to work from there? I started my "home work" with one doc. She raved about me so much that all her doc friends called me to get me to work for them. Sit down with your doc and feel him out. Call their office to see which one they would recommend for you :) nm x From what I can see, it's not MS Word, it's "Opal Office" and they are charging $11.95 for it, and it's a ripoff because they stole the program from "Open Office" which is totally free and are selling it for $11.95. At least that's how it looks to me. I had to start out in the office of a local hospital sm for a year, then went home. I didn't want to go home to be honest, too many distractions and my twins were babies at the time, but they were sending everyone home. I really don't know what to tell anyone when I see these posts. There are lots of companies out there needing help and you'd think that if they are willing to send their work overseas to people that don't even speak English as a first language, then they would be willing to hire a new graduate. I would be a little more pushy, offer to do 30 days at a lower cent per line then have a review, something like that. Keep pushing, someone will see potential and take a chance on you. Honestly, these companies that don't hire new graduates I just don't get it. I work for a small local company that is always behind on their work and I always suggest they hire some new graduates from the two local schools, but they never do it, they just sit and wait for people to apply. Good luck! office experience + Medical Terminology - Is it enough? Hi everyone, I've been wanting to take an MT course for quite some time, but still haven't managed to come up with enough money. So - I was wondering. Do you think for a beginning MT job in a hospital, would previous office experience plus courses in Medical Terminology be enough? Have any of you successfully done this? Maybe try a specialty doctor's office first. Most times they will hire you, in-house, and go from there. It is very difficult to find an at-home MT job just starting out; however, there are some companies who will hire you. I personally do not know of any, but if you do a search, maybe you will come across one. When I started 25 years ago, it was in a private physician's office and I just moved on up from there. Good luck! Just be careful not to get Office Works or Suite that is advertised as compatible with MS Word. I accidentally bought that once, the packaging was similar and the box said it did everything MS Word did. Well, it sort of did, but that software changed every document I had in my entire computer upon installation to its own version. That certainly would not have worked in transcribing and transmitting reports. While it did work with Word as the packaging said, it did so by changing Word to something else. I don't recall the exact name of this, but just read the packaging carefully and get Microsoft and not a lookalike. Just wanted to give you a heads up to avoid one of my many mistakes. Good luck. Newly Graduate from Medical Office Occupations I know that this may sound like a plug for a job but it isn't I have been down with a newly replaced knee. Now that I can find a job having trouble because I do want to become a home Medica Transcriber and no one will listen to me. I have been very successful as an independent contractor. You should really consider it. I started out in the file room of the urology office I used to work for. They had a new peds uro coming in and wanted another typist. The only schooling I had was 2 semesters of medical terminology at our local community college. Granted that was in 1990, and I at least had a working knowledge of urology, but it can be done if you really want it bad enough. maybe take a medical term course and start with physical therapy office nm Don't forget your local papers and local Temp. Agency or Manpower office. nm s Good. The lab book was a good choice. Be sure you look through each book when you get it. Put tabs on sections you will want to refer to quickly. I know my lab book (not Stedman's) has all kinds of extra sections. I think my next purchase would be the cardiac book. Where did you land your first job, not the MTSO, the other one? I do not think I am TOO GOOD. companies that pay these low wages are taking advantage of new MTs that don't know their value yet. The MTs that received this offer had all spent thousands of dollars and a lot of time learning to become an MT. I just don't know why anyone would sell themselves short for 5 cpl ($10 an hour is generous by the way as most new MTs won't get to 200 lph). As I said, there are companies out there that pay better. If you are trying to help, steer the newbies to these companies, not the companies that have a reputation for not respecting their MTs. If you take the time, do your research, and graduate from a good school, you should have no problem finding a good job. I had 4 offers before I even got my final score. My first company paid 7 cpl and after 6 months, I took on my own client making just about double that. good to know!! Thank you! good to know!! Thank you! Good For You! My late Mother did the same thing. We didn't do homeschooling, but she did it all and did it exceptionally well. She was brilliant but never acted like it. She was a taxi to more than the 6 kids in our family. She taught piano, voice, directed the church choir, wrote plays (we were in them), was busy in RNC fund-raising, and on and on. We just called her "Mother." So good luck to you. It really warms my heart to hear stories like yours. As for the MT thing, it sounds like you could teach yourself. That's what I did. Good luck! Appy anywhere and everywhere. There are a lot of companies who say they require at least 2 years experience, but you would be surprised at how many will give someone who has just graduated a chance. If you pass their test they will hire you, 2 years or not. I know from experience. I graduated last year and I applied to every ad that had a 2 year minimum, before I graduated. I got hired 1 week before I graduated, and I have been working ever since. Good Luck! Nothing is good for a newbie. Ya, I think I won't take the job because it may be a little difficult. That's real smart. I have not heard anything good about it. If you are looking for a quality MT education, the gold standard training comes from Andrews and M-Tec. Some graduates of Career Step have had good luck in finding and keeping employment also. The top schools turn out job-ready MTs. Employers are eager to hire them. The cheaper schools do not turn out graduates that employers are eager to hire. What do you consider a good living? I'm thinking of work from my house instead of the office, changing careers. a good living Sounds like you are quite successful. Please share with me what is involved in actually earning this level of income. Have you been at it for a long time? How many hours/week do you work? Thanks. I had not heard it put that way, and after thinking about it, I know you're right! thanks for opening my eyes to think "bigger".... better to be excellent, and more "employable", than to be somewhat limiting. I do plan to study in such a way as to be excellent! That's just the way I'm "built"! :) thanks again for your post.... -Anne (amh) :) This is a good start for you (sm) In light of the fact that you are new, this is an excellent rate of pay with a reasonable (generous, really) production requirement, even though you may not be able to meet it at first. Add 20-25% to it for the benefits and you'll be making more on the lines of $13.08. As an on-site employee you will not have to pay self-employment tax or overhead. When people scoff at this rate of pay, remember that everyone starting out in a new career field starts at the bottom. You have to work your way up. As an MT, your value lies in your ability to produce quantity work while maintaining high quality. Newbies aren't able to produce much while maintaining quality. The incentive pay makes this better, and if it has good benefits, then you're doing well. The most important thing about this job is that it will give you experience. You NEED that experience. If you can get it while being paid hourly, so much the better. Unless someone scoffing at this can produce a job for you which pays better, do not listen to them. If you do not have a job and you need a job, you are in no position to be turning one down because it doesn't pay top dollar. Take this job and do your best with it. Yes, this is still a good field! Hey Porr - Welcome! First of all, you have come one of the most negative MT sites on the internet. If you are easily discouraged or depressed, I would advise you NOT to come to this site. I have been an MT for over 30 years and every time I come to this board, I leave so dejected, I wonder if I have wasted my life doing MT. I have finally realized that this board drags me down, so I don't come here very often. The people who do come on here legitimately, come to relieve their frustrations, get advice, vent about work situations, etc.... we are not all this stressed out all the time This is a great field, just keep your nose to the grindstone and stay away from negative websites ( Good luck! You can't give up hope if this is the field you want to work in. I had been doing my job for 17 years and needed something new. I did a lot of research and liked the opportunites that being an MT provided. I'm sure it would not be for everybody, but I love what I do and have great docs to transcribe for. Plus, perhaps more important, it is an ongoing learning process. I like to stay challenged and this job certainly does that. Good luck to you!!
