I am not giving up
I am a mother of 6 whose husband is losing his job this year. I need to do something. I do daycare now but with all the new laws and restrictions it is not worth the hassel any more.
I am at Quiz 17 in the course. Where are you at?
Giving up
Well I have been searching for a job for over two months. I graduated from a local community college and hold a diploma in medical transcription. I have taken test upon test, and passed, but still no job offers. What a disappointment. I am throwing in the towel. Apparently there are very few places that will give somebody new a chance. How am I suppose to get experience if no one will give it to me.
not giving up
Well, I guess I just continue to search. Due to finances, we had to sell one car and are really banking on something, ANYTHING from home.... :) Applying for jobs has become a full-time job. :) Too bad I can't get paid for it.
Some of them just want the $ without giving anything in return
Most of us know which ones of the schools just take money and don't give much in return for it. They are businesses, but the best businesses make sure that the customer or student gets value in return for tuition. Some of them don't care.
'tis the season for giving!
What about giving professional MTs a break? (sm)
I'm simply trying to save her money and anxiety by suggesting that perhaps in her life situation, MT is not a career she should be pursuing. I'm not negative in the least, I just think that anyone who thinks this is a easy money-making career is deluding themselves.
This is not tupperware ... this is a professional, mentally challenging career with severe implications to both patients and health providers if the job is not done with the utmost accuracy and attention to detail.
This is not a career that someone should get into just because they want to stay home with their children. I've seen too many errors because of distracted transcriptionists who were ill equipped for their jobs and trust me, if you were given the wrong medication and/or wrong dosage because the Transcriptionist transcribed mg instead of mcg or couldn't distinguish between Seldane and Feldene due to distractions, you'd probably be screaming bloody murder.
When people stop thinking of MT as a "stay at home, play with my kids and do it on the side" kind of career, them maybe the rest of us professionals who dedicate our time becoming the best MTs we can in spite of lousy pay, foreign outsourcing and the rest of the world thinking we're a bunch of slackers who make easy money for nothing, can finally gain the respect we should have had all along.
Giving newbies a chance
Here's the problem--MTSOs want qualified MTs who can do any kind of hospital (acute care) dictation. They don't have time or the money to spend training newbies who signed up for programs that only teach entry-level, office dictation.
MTSOs know this already. They're not going to give you "a chance" because they don't believe you can do the work. They have experience with graduates from that school already.
Your school taught you that you need to put a marketing packet together to get a job. That's what you do if you want to get clients on your own. That's what your program prepared you to do-- entry-level office dictation.
Isn't that what you wanted? That's what you signed up for when you enrolled in that school.
Giving newbies a chance
With all due respect, those of us who are new to the industry and trying to learn can do without your condescending attitude. You do not know what my capabilities are. You are right about one thing, however. I would rather market myself and work on my own than suffer the apparent misery many of you "experienced" MTs are enduring working for the MTSOs. To those that have offered constructive advice- thank you, it is appreciated.
Congratulations!
Congratulations! Wish you the best! nm

Congratulations!!
Wonderful news. I wish you the best.
I got my first MT job in March and I'm still loving it. I hope they treat you and appreciate you as well as my employer has so far.
Good luck!!
Congratulations!
Congratulations! I'm very happy for you. Do you mind saying the name of the company?
Congratulations!
It sounds as if you put lots of thought into how to compose an effective resume, and it worked well for you!
That, and all of the hard work you put in transcribing, along with completely researching and contacting companies.
You are a great example to other MTs who are just starting as to how to go about "catching" that first chance.
congratulations
Yeah!!!!!!! I love good news. Good for you!
Congratulations!
I hope everything works out great for you!
congratulations!
That is really great! thanks for the encouragement. I graduated almost 3 weeks ago. Let us know how your new job goes. :)
Congratulations! What school?

Congratulations on finishing your MT training!
Since it seems that you are just starting out in your career, it is interesting to note that you are "in the process of getting certification". I was not aware that AAMT had changed the requirements for sitting for the CMT exam. Have they waived their requirement that CMT candidates have two years of acute-care transcription experience to be eligible to sit for the exam?
If you mean that you will be getting a "certificate" from your MT school, that is something entirely different. A certificate from an MT school does not entitle the holder to call himself or herself a "certified" MT. If your school has led you to believe this is the case, you have been misled at best and possibly deliberately deceived.
Unfortunately, some of the less reputable schools have been known to claim that their course entitles their students to call themselves "certified". This term has a particular meaning in the MT world and to call oneself "certified" without successfully passing the official CMT exam could be considered fraud.
Not intended as criticism, just something you might want to check out before making claims on a resume that could lead to embarrassment.
Congratulations and good luck to you!
:-)
Congratulations on completing your training. sm
I'm not an expert or anything, but will tell you what I know. Both Medquist and MedScribe are legitimate companies. You might want to check out the MedQuist board on this site, check the titles to the left (on my computer). There is quite a bit of upheaval there right now.
Have not heard anything bad about MedScribe.
Do not know about MT Recruiters. Is this a placement service? I would go to the company board, and ask if anyone knows anything about them.
Someone posted here the other day that Monster.com had been hacked recently. I found it on the ABC News site, so I guess that is true. There is a place here on MT Stars that you can post a resume. Many of us have one there.
Good luck with your search.
Great News! Congratulations - NM

Congratulations is often spelled incorrectly...
It's not something to be overly concerned about. Besides, this board is a place where MTs come to get away from their job. Could it be possible that people posting here are not spell checking their posts? Yes, I think so.
Going on three months...
I am new also and just started working for an MTSO about three months ago. The first month I was only making 100 every 2 weeks, but I am now making 350 every two weeks on part time. I think when you get into two and three different MTSO or whatever, it would just get way to stressful and hectic. I would personally try and find one company that had enough work for you or another company that just needed a fill in, then together you should be able to pull of at least the &500.00 that you need.
Thanks Camry
GOING ON 4 months though..
I take too much time out to research because I want my reports to be blank free. I also feel like I just am not getting the speed I should be. I am starting to wonder if its because mine are short dictations and it is taking so much time to load each one and then do all new demographics. I have found I am faster on longer dictations.
Lets just keep on truckin!!
Good luck though!
That's exactly where I am at after 8 months.

40K? IN 18 months?
I have been an MT for 9 years . First year made 30K. Second year 33K. Last year, my 8th, I made a whopping 36K. Full-time. Lots of normals/expanders. You definitely are NOT going to become rich in this field. If you want 40K within 2 years, you are going to have to do something else. If you can wait several years, you may be able to do 40K, if you are lucky. The pay for this field is actually going DOWN not up .
Me too, they said I could try again in 3 months.
I took my time with the test and got through the entire thing. I don't see how I was that bad. I'd like to know what my shortcomings were too. They said I could try again in three months. Good luck to all of us.
MT for 6 Months....sm
I have been working as a MT for about 6 months. I guess I am still considered a newbie. I make $.09 cpl and I am an IC and currently transcribe for 4 different CRNPs. Some days I may transcribe for 2 of them and then there are days that I only transcribe for 1. When I have 2 of them to transcribe for, I would say that I average 800 to 1000 lines for that day and it ususally takes me most of the day. If I have just 1 to transcribe for then it would be between 400 to 500 lines a day and it only takes me a few hours. Does this sound right for someone that has only been working for 6 months or should I beable to do more lines in an 8 hour period?
I began at 65 LPH. At 18 months, I am at 350.
.
I've been at this for 6 months...
I'm an IC getting paid per MB of dictation, but it averages around 6 cpl. I've been trying to decide if I should stick it out until I can put 1 year of experience on my resume or get out of there. The problem I've seen is that none of the companies are paying newbies worth a toot. Right now, I have a dream of a dictator. I'm the sole MT on this account through a national. Is your work easy at least, to counter the lower pay? That's what I keep telling myself when I'm tempted to run for the hills. You never know what you'll get with another company. The work may be awful.
6 months and still searching!
;) So, I've taken the ball into my hands, and I must say, it hasn't helped!
I've applied to numerous companies that were willing to hire a "noob" but heard nothing back from any of them.
Does anyone know of a few more I could look up?
I graduated with a 97% accuracy, so I'm not worried there. Let me know! Any help is appreciated!
YES! 37 complaints against the company in 36 months.
THAT is why they changed the name and the website address.
In the first 6 months of this year. I'm not new to this, though, so I moved on. nm
s
did it in 9 months of about 35 or so hours a week
Worked HARD those hours too! :-)
You can collect unemployment for three months. NM

6.5 cpl for acute care and then to 7.5 within 6 months - NM

I think I posted this same post 3 months ago....
and today I look up drugs every so often but still NOTHING like I use to!! It does get better trust me. I have been doing this for 3 months and loving it.
It gets better. *hugs*
Worked for Spheris for 6 months.
there are better places to work for that pay much better. For the new MT, they have a great training program and mentoring, but I did not stay there longterm as the pay was very low and the benefits were awful. I only wanted to be an employee for the medical benefits, but their medical was more expensive than if I purchased it on my own. The account I was on was also horrible (mostly ESLs). I was stressed day after day trying to make my line count. Since being away from Spheris, I have never had an issue with meeting line counts and actually do 2x the amount of lines each week working 10 hours less. I don't know what it was about there, but I just couldn't get over 120 lph. I would never go back there, but I did learn a lot while I was there.
10,000+ dictation minutes in 6 months.
I went to Career Step so that is all I can compare it to. According to the eSmartMed site, Career Step has 1320 dictated minutes to transcribe (not sure if that is accurate as it has been so long since I went through the program, but it is probably close). It took me 7 months to get through Career Step doing those 1320 minutes, so I don't see how it is possible for a student to do 10,000+ in 6 months. If I had had to 10,000+, it would have taken me years to complete the course, not months.
It only took me a couple of months to get out of unpaid status!
Great to get my foot in the door!
took me 9 months to graduate from Premier Program with M-TEC
Worked at it 5 days a week, just like a job.
What are their expectations of an MT with 4 months of experience?? What company?
Geez
We only hire a New Graduate with 8 months experience or more
We no longer hire new graduates right out of an MT program. We recently did away with our Apprenticeship Training Program and only hire new graduates with 8 months or more of MT experience.
A frriend who was there ran out of work all the time (within the last 3 months) & the techs screw
s
Career Step only give you a year, so at M-TEC you have 18 months and will learn a LOT more.
Your post made it sound like you would rather take more time to do the course, but there's a reason M-Tec requires it done in 18 months.
You can't really learn if you drag it out longer than 18 months. You have to keep doing it, working at it, familiarizing yourself with it, in order to learn it. That is why they push you to not drag your feet, either do it or don't do it!
Good luck to you.
Accustat Carolinas pays some 2 after they work for free for six months...just crazy.nm
nm
so you've been MT'ing for 6 months and I've been at it for 25 years but I don't know
what I'm talking about...that's a good one. The purpose of this board is for experienced MT's to give information to new MT's. One of the developments in this field is its recent downturn. We have a responsibility to be upfront with what we see, know and any conclusions we might draw. With less than 1 year of experience in the field, I hardly think you're in a position to give an educated answer regarding things like job markets, global influences and technological challenges. But then again, people like to only listen to things they like to hear...so have at it!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! DING ! DING! DING!
I will NEVER forget how it felt to graduate my course and feel like it was a whole new start!
GOOD JOB! CONGRATULATIONS!
