start with a secure FTP server for uploading and downloading your work. Shop around for the best deal and pay attention to how charges are calculated for the server space. With that in place, it won't matter where you live as your clients can upload to the server over the internet and you can download from wherever you're living!

I have a friend wanting to take an MT course. She has looked at Andrews, but cannot afford that. Is there another course that is more reasonable in cost, but still a good reputable "school"? Thanks.
Have it but don't recommend it
The purpose of this book is if you can only make out one word of a phrase, you can look that word up in this book and it will have a list of phrases containing that word. It definitely does not take the place of all the separate Stedman's specialty books.
The terms & phrases book has helped me out a few times, but all in all I do not recommend it unless you can get it for super cheap (like $10) somewhere. I would continue to collect the individual specialty books.

Andrews or M-Tec. I don't know anything about Meditec, but grads of the first two I mentioned get jobs when they get out.
I've taken on an AHP newbie before, and she wasn't even ready for radiology without lots of help. It didn't teach her 1/5 of what I expected her to know.

I'm sure they could direct you to the person who interviewed you or trained you. I have read about things like this happening here on these boards even to the experienced MT's. I can't see how a phone call would hurt anything. Just shows you want to work, IMO. Good luck.
I wouldn't recommend going FT with MT currently.
If you can do both for a while do that and then it will give you a chance to see if you like MT without having to give up the other job. You can get an idea of what your income would be as an MT and see if you could leave on that income alone. By working the 2 jobs you could also save some money or pay off bills so that if you did go MT full-time you would be in better shape when the lean times came around.

I am looking into schooling. I thought I had decided on Career steps, but after reading the board, Andrews and m-tech seem better. Is career steps a bad decision and does anyone know if it is easy to get a job after you graduate. I am looking to work from home only. I have an associates of applies science degree and passed my CNA course (certified nurses assistant). I planned on being a RN but got pregnant and am not willing to ever take him to daycare. I need to work from home and have been looking into medical transcription for almost a year now....... Just wondering what course will get me a job the easiest and if Career Steps is a good idea?

I don't think it is. I would not recommend this business
to anyone. With all the work going offshore or going to VR and the line rates dropping, or not increasing with inflation, plus all the horrible platforms, etc. it just isn't the business I woulud want to retrain for.

that's a very personal call --
no one can make it for you. There are good jobs to be had. But it is true the industry is changing as well. Did you ever have the varied transcription knowledge? Not sure if i would want to go back to school either. But then, there aren't many decent jobs you can do at home either. Maybe you can find a company that will work with your current knowledge while cross-training in other specialities, without having to go back to school. As far as what you see on the posts, that can be very helpful, but don't let it discourage you. I am sure there are many many MTs that are happy and never even look at these boards. Just decide what you want and go for it. Just don't think there's only one way to go about it. With all the changes, i still think there is a future for us.

I would recommend Stedman's Orthopedic
Word Book. It sounds like it isn't the exam that is the problem, but the tests/procedures, which is where a good reference source would help.

I am a CS graduate and found it to be reasonably priced and very in depth! It prepared me well!!!

I would not recommend it. Being a speed typist
isn't as important as being accurate, but if you have been typing "for years" and only type 55 wpm an MT course is not going to improve that. MT work can be very stressful. It is difficult for a newbie to get a position and the pay isn't very good even for experienced MTs who can work full-time. My MIL had MS and stress would make her muscles become rigid to the point she had to take some much Valium she was a zombie.
I wouldn't recommend MT for you based on your
situation, but if you have no previous MT experience/training you would need to take a course, either by correspondance or at a local community college. Training can take 9 to 18 months, or less depending on how much time you have to put into it, but if you are working FT you're probably looking at a year. Then you need to either get hired by a company that will hire newbies and pay them next to nothing, or do an internship, which you may or may not get paid for and may have to pay to do.

I would not recommend buying the CD versions used
because you are only allowed 2 downloads and then they don't work.
Each office is fifferent, even within each
office there may be some who prefer tapes versus handheld or some other type of system. If you're going to offer a service you need to have a game plan. Will you offer handhelds if they don't have them, what software do you have to download the files securely from the office to you, are you going to just upload the completed work back or will you do a remote print, are you going to store completed work for them or are they, etc.

How do you get around this besides working in an office first?
or maybe I am expecting too much, and it just is not going to work without some office time before me.
I am not sure how anyone expects a new graduate to get a job when everyone wants experience; however nobody is willing to hire us so that we may gain that experience.
You do your time in an office first, like the
majority of the rest of the MTs did. That's how it works.
I've got a week or so before I call...
...them back and accept, but if they're hiring more, I'll post it. My advice is to just apply like crazy! I applied even to places that said they wanted full-time MTs. Why not? You never know. Maybe they'll have that little "extra" work and will keep you in mind, or you might just hit them at the right time and place. Good luck to you!

I'm in this business many years, almost 3 decades, and I STILL have a couple of people, one especially, who I call when I have an MT question or if I want them to listen over the phone....it's networking and it's great and if you find a REAL good mt or cmt, well, then you've got GREAT help. Sometimes 4 ears are better than 2. I even have my daughter listen if she is here (albeit she is not in the medical field except 5 years so far *S*)

I don't want to mention who I work for because it is a small world among the larger companies and schools and I don't want any hard feelings or job grief. I'm too old now to start over!!
Medical Transcription Staffing schools are not the retail type of schools we normally think of; the ones who advertise on Google, Yahoo and MSN. These schools specialize in training groups of students for an MT company all at one time. Or they provide small groups on a regular basis.
These types of schools also exist in other fields. They work on what I would call "wholesale margins" because they don't incur as much overhead and they deal in larger numbers.
Rather than promote who we use I'll find one for this board as an example. I can Google or Yahoo the web and should be able to find one. I'll do it this weekend, if I can remember.

I would not recommend Penn Foster. In order
to take any of their courses you have to have completed 8th grade, and that is about where the courses are geared to. My teen son is taking an automotive course through them and he knows more than is in the books and he has found many errors in the books. They emphasize that the testing is open book and if you do poorly they allow you to test again. I don't feel like you learn much this way. While the school itself is an accredited school in most states, I feel like it would be a waste of time and money for MT.

I just accepted a SE position with MQ at the St Louis office. Can I get some opinions of others that work for this office? I will be part-time, so I'm wondering about their training and how well are you treated. Do you get answers to your questions quickly and do you get feedback regularly.

I was thinking that if he wants you to transcribe from his office, could you get that done in a couple of hours, and then go home to work from there? I started my "home work" with one doc. She raved about me so much that all her doc friends called me to get me to work for them. Sit down with your doc and feel him out. He could be a real help to you! Good luck!
From what I can see, it's not MS Word, it's "Opal Office"
and they are charging $11.95 for it, and it's a ripoff because they stole the program from "Open Office" which is totally free and are selling it for $11.95. At least that's how it looks to me.

You didn't mention the name of the company. It could be they have a new account and it's not off the ground yet. It was a month after I was hired before I actually started working. That was two years ago and I'm seldom out of work. I'm still on that same account.
This is a wakeup call for those with inadequate skills
As technology allegedly improves and new medical procedures and techniques are created, we all have to keep our skills up. Those who have not are having a tough time keeping job these days. They may want to blame it on the changes, but it isn't the changes, it's their lack of skills. We finally have come to the place in this industry that people can't just listen and type what the doctor says. Anyone who got into this business with less-than-excellent skills is now getting a wakeup call. I think that's what this poster is telling us. She has had a wakeup call and she has seen other unqualified MTs getting a wakeup call. Those who are prepared and continue to build on their skills have a present and a future in this industry.

I had to start out in the office of a local hospital sm
for a year, then went home. I didn't want to go home to be honest, too many distractions and my twins were babies at the time, but they were sending everyone home. I really don't know what to tell anyone when I see these posts. There are lots of companies out there needing help and you'd think that if they are willing to send their work overseas to people that don't even speak English as a first language, then they would be willing to hire a new graduate. I would be a little more pushy, offer to do 30 days at a lower cent per line then have a review, something like that. Keep pushing, someone will see potential and take a chance on you. Honestly, these companies that don't hire new graduates I just don't get it. I work for a small local company that is always behind on their work and I always suggest they hire some new graduates from the two local schools, but they never do it, they just sit and wait for people to apply. office experience + Medical Terminology - Is it enough?

I've been wanting to take an MT course for quite some time, but still haven't managed to come up with enough money. So - I was wondering. Do you think for a beginning MT job in a hospital, would previous office experience plus courses in Medical Terminology be enough? Have any of you successfully done this?

Maybe try a specialty doctor's office first. Most times
they will hire you, in-house, and go from there.
It is very difficult to find an at-home MT job just starting out; however, there are some companies who will hire you. I personally do not know of any, but if you do a search, maybe you will come across one.
When I started 25 years ago, it was in a private physician's office and I just moved on up from there.

Just be careful not to get Office Works or Suite
that is advertised as compatible with MS Word. I accidentally bought that once, the packaging was similar and the box said it did everything MS Word did. Well, it sort of did, but that software changed every document I had in my entire computer upon installation to its own version. That certainly would not have worked in transcribing and transmitting reports. While it did work with Word as the packaging said, it did so by changing Word to something else. I don't recall the exact name of this, but just read the packaging carefully and get Microsoft and not a lookalike. Just wanted to give you a heads up to avoid one of my many mistakes. Good luck.

I know that this may sound like a plug for a job but it isn't I have been down with a newly replaced knee. Now that I can find a job having trouble because I do want to become a home Medica Transcriber and no one will listen to me. I have been very successful as an independent contractor. You should really consider it.
I started out in the file room of the urology office I used to work for.
They had a new peds uro coming in and wanted another typist. The only schooling I had was 2 semesters of medical terminology at our local community college. Granted that was in 1990, and I at least had a working knowledge of urology, but it can be done if you really want it bad enough.

you have to call the hospital/clinic line to connect with the dictation machine on their end
so you get a dial tone, that means it is working. Next you dial the number of the dictation system, and it says something like "welcome to bla-bla hospital. Please enter your user ID followed by the pound sign." Then you enter your ID and it starts giving you work in your queue or asks for job type or whatever.
