is it ok to send out resume or best to drop off one?nm

Call them or send them your resume
sounds like you don't have much of a choice - or if you are employee - take your unemployment and start your own job search
Post your resume on all the various job boards, send resumes to
local clinics/doctor's offices, apply to local hospitals.   As a newbie getting a job is hard, but some companies will hire you based on the school you got your certificate from.  Some schools are better than others and if you didn't get your certificate from one of the better ones changes are harder of getting a job.   Most likely you'll need to work in-house for a while.  There are some companies that will offer you a job, many at low to no pay, and there are a few companies that are not legit, so be sure you investigate before accepting.  If you have to fork out any money for equipment or software in order to get the job be cautious, especially if they require you to purchase it from them.
I like Misha
and welcome her contributions.

Maybe you need to slink back to the junior-high-school mean-girls clique where you belong, MadMT.
Misha
Is acute care the same as multi-specialty care?
I see some companies advertising for acute care and multi-specialty care MTs.
Vote for Misha!
All you MT's that read this board and who are sick of Misha and her know it all comments....Please reply to this posting! Vote Misha off this website. So far 1 vote Misha!!!!!
I agree with Misha
You have some good qualifications under your belt, but you absolutely need to develop your ear before you work at home, unless you attend a good school first.  Definitely try in-house to begin with to get your skills up and try to do some ESL docs because there are plenty of those if you work from home.  Best of luck to you!
Ditto what Misha said and more - see inside
I transcribed and did QA for more than 4 years before returning to just transcribing. I can tell you hands down that the best MTs were the ones that already had a very solid backround in English and a huge love of learning before they spent big money to attend a GOOD school. IMHO, MT is not easy to learn unless you put forth a lot of effort, and if you struggle with English then you may not learn as many medical concepts as you need to, which in turn will make you struggle on the job. I saw this time and time again as my company shuffled people in and out who could not cut it. I may also add that some of these people who did not make it were from the Big 3. It is not for everyone. I agree that the big money is not really there these days.
that's a very personal call --
no one can make it for you. There are good jobs to be had. But it is true the industry is changing as well. Did you ever have the varied transcription knowledge? Not sure if i would want to go back to school either. But then, there aren't many decent jobs you can do at home either. Maybe you can find a company that will work with your current knowledge while cross-training in other specialities, without having to go back to school. As far as what you see on the posts, that can be very helpful, but don't let it discourage you. I am sure there are many many MTs that are happy and never even look at these boards. Just decide what you want and go for it. Just don't think there's only one way to go about it. With all the changes, i still think there is a future for us.
There was no personal attack there
toward you. No need to take offense. Jay did not suggest anything about you or your experience, just that the MT world is changing (which we all really know whether we want to believe that or not) and it can be tough, especially for newbies starting out.
Mentoring by above - personal experience

Well, having been mentored by the person who is offering the mentoring, I just wanted to add my two cents...

I did all of my practical training/learning, etc., through DKM.  Without her, I would be nowhere. I do not believe there is a school out there that will totally supply you with all the knowledge you need to be an MT...actually working on actual dictations is the only way. There is not one day that goes by that I don't learn something new - either a new term, new med, new surgery, etc., etc.  She provided me with feedback, corrections, etc.  When I repeated mistakes again, she corrected me again.

So, here I am over a year later...still with her.  I worked hard, I made notebooks with all the terms/meds/exam types/procedures, etc.  I poured over all of my corrections, etc., etc.  I am far from perfect, but I learn more every day.  Some docs I can do 20 mins an hour, some 10, but I am certainly able to work as an MT with a high degree of accuracy.  So, is this mentor a scam?  I would verify NOT.

No personal experience here, but have you checked

Whenever I make a big purchase I check amazon.com for their customer reviews.  I find them so helpful.  Good luck in your decision. ~kam

It is a matter of personal opinion. Some like
Shorthand, some like Instant Text.
I don't have personal experience, but if you check through
the archives the 2 best schools are M-Tec and Andrews.  Some companies will waive the 2 years of experience if you completed the course work from the above.  I've never heard of the other school.
Wow! Now I know where to send the
saved web pages of the reports you posted yesterday!  You still haven't learned anything!  LOL!
send it to me then but
you better take off "sensitive information" or everyone else on this board will scream at you that I could be a stalker.
send me an email - nm

pls send details
pls send me ur MT classifieds details though my email address.i am waiting for ur kind reply
Send in resumes and test everywhere that will allow it.
I applied to several places while I was a student, and some places will allow you to test even though they say they require 2 years experience.  Some will waive the 2 year experience requirement if you have graduated from a medical transcription training program.  I found a job at home while in school, so it's not impossible but it does take some time.  Good luck!
Did you send followup emails? sm

I have heard that sometimes it helps. I am on my third job since I graduated this summer. The first company I left because it was VR, and I just couldn't work fast enough to make any money at 4 cpl. The second job I had lost the account I worked on and had to let me go. I have been with my third company for a month now, and they have had so many issues with their software that I didn't work all last week. I haven't worked for more than 2 days in a row without any problems. I am now on the job search again because I can't rely on these people and they will just not return my emails for days on end.

I probably sent out 10-15 resumes and applications before anyone responded back. All of the jobs offers I received had required 3 to 5 years of experience, so don't be afraid to apply to those.

Good luck! I know how disappointing it is to spend hours taking a test and not even get a reply.

Information
Thank you soooo much for the information and helping me to make an informed decision..................:)
I don't have any information on it, but if you want to
most are CareerStep, M-TEC, and Andrews.  That doesn't mean other schools are no good, it just means that those are the most recognized in the online community.  If you want to work on site in your own city, take a course offered on site in your own city because that will be more recognized.  Hope this helps.
MT Information

Hi,

I have just read some of the responses on becoming a MT. I was wondering if anyone had more detailed information regarding how long it actually takes to get certified, cost and realistic opportunities after graduation. Are most jobs in hospitals, doctor's offices etc. or are most work-from-home? What can a new graduate expect for an annual income? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Information regarding M-TEC
I believe that the software requirements can be found on the M-Tec website, but I have not checked lately. You need Word and that is it. I would not buy any additional books before you actually start the course as you receive a large number of references. This information can also be found on M-TEC's website. How you decide to take notes will be your decision. Some use OneNote, some Excel, some Keynote and some take notes with paper and pen. You will receive all the references and tools necessary to be successful. The rest is up to you. It is a tough course and prepares you well for working afterwards. Once you graduate, you will have access to a job board, and you will realize that M-TEC will open many doors for you. All this information can be found on their website and on their forum. You can also ask questions on the forum or just call or e-mail M-TEC, and you will receive all the answers. While taking the course you can share the computer as long as you can ensure that you have access for a certain length of time every day and/or during the week. For work I would recommend having a dedicated computer. There are several companies that provide a computer to the MT, and I think that has been discussed here on MTStars on the company board.
Thank you for the information!
I've already download it the trial.
I need some information please

I have recently submitted a resume online and have medical transcription experience. It has been a few years, but I have been a processor for the government and am a fast and accurate worker. Long story short, I stumbled upon this area, checking out a certain company that is interested in me, and they want me to test. I see they are listed in this area, but I want to see if it is a job, or a school. Can any one speak out and advise me please? I am looking for a good home based position, but want to see what the company is like, as well as the employees.

Please, if anyone is out there, reply to me. I have been unemployed by the government after a huge lay off and am trying to keep my home for myself and my disabled child. I hope my prayer will finally be answered.

Thanks for letting me in.....

This is not first-hand information about M-Tec, but
I cannot recall ever seeing anything negative about any aspect of M-Tec on any MT board. I also do not recall ever hearing of any successful M-Tec graduate who was not able to find employment. The key to the success of schools like Andrews and M-Tec is that they prepare their students very thoroughly, and employers are well aware of the quality of their courses and are therfore eager to hire them. If I had it to do all over again, knowing what I know now, I would absolutely have no qualms about signing up with either Andrews or M-Tec. Hopefully, an M-Tec graduate will be able to give you a definitive answer about placement. M-Tec personnel have a reputation for integrity. I have never seen any negative comments about any of them on any MT board. It would seem quite safe to rely on any claims they make about their placement success.
Great information.
I will definitely keep that in mind.
That's okay. No need to verify the information
It would be nice if their web site would list medical transcription and the credentials of the instructors. That's not your fault. I'm disappointed in the way community colleges handle it because it shows a lack of respect for the medical transcription course they offer. That's their problem though, not your responsibility. I just thought maybe your school was diferent and had verifiable information. Thanks anyway for your reply.
M-TEC is always forthright with information

I know it might sound odd to some, but we do pride ourselves on telling the truth (and nothing but the truth) to prospective students, current students, and graduates about the industry, job opportunities, and the profession in general. We are not like some of the matchbox schools who are trying to enroll everyone and anyone off the streets. We have a pre-enrollment test, and we pride ourselves on the difficulty level and quality of our program. We only enroll as many students as we know we can handle. Period. We won't tell you that this course is going to be easy, nor do we tell you that you can do this from home in your jammies with kids on your lap. We take this profession very seriously, and we expect our students and graduates to do the same. Our placement rate is high and, while the biggest percentage of our employers who hire our graduates are looking for full time employee status (what a great opportunity that is by the way), many of them will also still hire part-time. It is easier by far to make this a career choice and prepare for full time position so that you can continue to train your ear and update your skill levels once you graduate. If part-time is the only option for you, we will work with you to that end. Those are the facts.

That having been said, I would be more than happy to talk with anyone who is sincerely interested in our program or medical transcription in general. Please feel free to email at sfrancis@mtecinc.com or call toll free 877-864-3307 and talk with me or any one of our staff at your convenience. :)

The websites will have a lot of information..sm
about price, what you get for your money, how long you can expect the course to take, etc. Any other questions can be directed to the school and they will be happy to answer your questions. Just don't let price be the only consideration. The value of the materials, instructors ability, and marketability should be considered.
HELP--On-line course information..??
I have been an MT for 13 years and have a friend who is trying to enter this profession via an on-line course.  She asked me if I know of any.  Can anyone tell me about an on-line program that includes training in Expander programs that is a legitimate program and recognized and accepted by employers?  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Not True Information
Not sure where you had heard this info, but we never would hire anyone and allow them to work for free. We pay competitive rates for every single new hire. Our training program that we used to have was a FREE program offered to new grads.

Looking for Company Information
Has anyone heard of JCW Transcription Service based in New York? Any information would be helpful. Thanks!
resume
I agree. I have posted my resume, and after sending out dozens of resumes to specific companies, someone from a MT site contacted me. Good starting pay and good folks. Good luck!
My Resume
Under my EDUCATION heading, I simply wrote 'Medical Transcription Student' and listed the time I went to school under that. For example August, 2007 - January, 2008. I simply did not state the name of the school I went to. (I figured if they read my resume and were genuinely concerned, they would ask me.) Then the next paragraph I listed all the types of reports I have done. ( for example - I have practice transcribing Clinic Notes, Operative Reports, etc.- I listed them all) Next paragraph listed all the specialities I have practice doing. (for example - I have practice transribing reports for Dermatology, Cardiology, etc.) Last paragraph stated that I have 9 months experience in transcribing reports. I DID NOT list this experience under work experience. It is clearly listed under education.
Do What I Did- Pad Your Resume
And by "pad," I mean... make it all up. Give yourself 2 years, or 3, or 4 of experience.

It got my foot in the door a year ago, making great money now.

Just have to be confident that you know what you're doing.

And, if you're not- then maybe CareerStep is the way to go.
Resume
What I did when I started looking for at-home jobs (before I started MT school) was created a "web" resume. All it had on it were my name and my email address. I created an email address specifically for that so that it wouldn't clash with my personal email.

I haven't been to the job board here yet, so someone correct me if I am wrong. I don't see how just having your name and email address would be a problem. I'm teaching my son (who is 15) that on job applications where a SS# is requested, to just put in "available upon hire." My opinion is that for telecommuting work, your location should also be "available upon hire/contract."
Information on Focus Infomatics
Does anyone have any information on Focus Infomatics in Boston, MA?  Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.
