Becoming and MT

Hi! I happend on this site thankfully just as I am about to sign up with Career Step. I want to become and MT so that I can schedule my work day around my kids and not have to get anyones approval. I hate to call in sick or ask for a day off. I'm a travel agent currently and I'm a one person on-site. So, it is not easy to take some time off.
From what I understand, I can get a job where I am required to work so many hours per day and have the flexibility to do my hours whenever I like during that 24 hour period. Is this correct?
Of course I also see some talk on here about the number of lines you type -- I guess that would be about the same in respect to what I want. (is that better pay than hourly?)
My main thing is that I don't want to jump in and then find out this isn't what I was looking for.
