Any good internet based companys to work for at all?

hello everyone,
I am a newbie...after reading these boards, I am left with the question... are there any good internet based trascription companies to work for?
and, if not, who is the lesser of the evils? i know each company has good and bad aspects, but does anyone work for or know of a company that they are happy with?
...or do i need to look for MT jobs in house?

I've seen awful work from "experienced MTs and good work from new graduates.
Training and education really does make a difference. Some people just have 15 or 20 years of very bad experience. They may be fortunate that one employer was willing to hire and keep them, but if that one closed, they would be in trouble. It all depends on the person. some new graduates are a better bet then some experienced MTs. I would prefer to find an experienced MT with great skills and a teachable attitude, but many experienced MTs know everything and are only willing to do things the way they've always done them.
Any good news about MT Work?
I am a current student. I did MT work for a small hospital years ago. Switched to coding--not a good "fit". I really want to get back into MT work. I loved it! I hear so much negativity on the forums. Anyone have anything encouraging or positive? I would love any feedback from you veterans out there!javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');

If you have a good MT education, work from home. Besides
There's not much help going on at hospitals and clinics these days. At least the national services have someone assigned to help you if you need help from home. I wish they had done that when I was just starting out years ago.
If you have already done the right thing and you have a good MT education, go for the work-at-home job. Good luck with your new career!
If you didn't get a good education, neither on site nor at-home jobs are going to make a difference. Just go get a good education and make things easier on yourself and your potenetial employers.
Not a good idea to lie about work experience -
Chances are there is a reason they do not want someone with less. More than likely it will be obvious to who hires you that something is amiss. Never a good idea to lie about these things because you more than likely will be found out! Good luck to you. :-)
Good education DOES work. And there are more ways to get it than Three.
There are way too many inferior MTs - good ones will always be able to find work!

How about Medquist? is it a good company to work for?
I recently received a reply from an application I filled out for Medquist and was wondering exactly how they operated and what to expect if it turned out to be promising. Do any of the companies provide all of the equipment? My MT instructor said that there were companies that did provide everything from computers to software and the hardware, too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...I'm willing to do just about anything to get my foot in the door somewhere.

A number of good compaies do 100% QA and feedback on a noob's work
But they also tend to hire new grads from good programs that can get up to speed in a reasonable amount of time and that know when to ask questions.

I think the MTSO is saying that she has knowledge based
having had MTs who were fakes and some who were not, and is now able to discern which is which. I don't think he/she was saying any more, any less.

I wouldn't recommend MT for you based on your
situation, but if you have no previous MT experience/training you would need to take a course, either by correspondance or at a local community college. Training can take 9 to 18 months, or less depending on how much time you have to put into it, but if you are working FT you're probably looking at a year. Then you need to either get hired by a company that will hire newbies and pay them next to nothing, or do an internship, which you may or may not get paid for and may have to pay to do.

Is MT a decent job based on pay #s I see here? And how is outsourcing affecting pay?
I am brand new to the MT world. I'm considering taking training and an internship at a local company (my cost = $2,000) and then working as a contractor for them. From reading different questions and responses here, I'm concerned that the pay is pretty low and has not increased much in the past few years. My other concern is that more companies are outsourcing their work overseas because it's cheaper. How much of that is happening and how much is that hurting pay here?
I'd appreciate any information and opinions. I have to decide by Monday, January 8. Now I'm thinking that I should just find another career path and take classes at a community college. I worked in another career and made excellent money, but the stress and long hours were just too much. I was looking for something less stressful and the chance to work at home. THANKS!!!

I would suggest that you consider working on site in an office or hospital for a period of time. At home you don't have the support group that you really need when first starting out. Best of luck to you!

Does anyone know any companies that hire MTs with internet satellite? I will be graduating in about a month from MTEC, and DSL is not available in my area. Thanks.

What exactly is the difference between broadband and other types? Do you have to purchase a card for the laptop to have this? I am very ignorant when it comes to different types of connections and what would be the best for me. My home computer is wireless, but they say it is not cable or DSL, just wireless. I hope that it is acceptable to the company. Any info on Internet connections would be greatly appreciated.

and also locally, and test with everyone that allows you to. A lot of companies say they will not hire newbies but some are willing to waive the experience requirement if you test well. Good luck to you!
Secure internet access.....
It's hard to know if you really have secure internet access at open places such as an airport, etc., but someone would have to really know what they are doing to access your computer while you're working. They would rather be stealing your identity than reports. Hotels will usually give you a password to log onto their network, but again, the same situation.
Keep sending out resumes via internet and locally -
There is nothing that can make up for your lack of experience. You can just hope someone decides to give you a chance. However, where I work we would rather hire someone right out of school who has gone to one of the Big Three than someone from another school with years of transcribing under their belt. You don't need a dictionary if you have internet access (see inside)
just use www.onelook.com it has all you could ask for in a dictionary, has a search function, and is much easier than lifting a heavy book!
Questions about schools and internet connections...

I am new to this website and to the MT world and have a few questions, mostly pertaining to my future school choice.
First off, I have heard that M-Tec, Andrews and Career Step are the 'top 3' online MT schools.
I have been very interested in M-Tec and have heard a lot of good about them, but I would like to know if anyone (who has gone to them) thinks they are overrated or too pricey. I have also heard from someone who is a CMT that Career Step is the way to go, but I've heard a lot of negatives about them and the course is much shorter. Do you really need the 1000+ hours that M-Tec offers or is the 600+ hours sufficient? This is all very new to me and I don't want to make a bad choice picking a school and waste time and money and end up not being able to get hired.
I also wondered if there is any hope of working as an MT if you can only get dial up internet. The area we are possibly moving to, is in the country and DSL and cable are not offered there at this time.
Last question, I have heard that the people graduating from these 'top 3' and getting work right out of school, are the students graduating with high honors. How hard is it to graduate with high honors and what are the chances of doing so? And, is there even a chance at getting work for those that don't get honors? I'm sorry I've asked so much, I'm just afraid of making a mistake! Thank you all in advance!
agree. Much quicker for me to research the internet than take the time..
to stock a library of books that takes me more time to look through than finding some very dependable websites and bookmarking them in your favorites. I certainly don't miss the days when when you had to constantly update your medical library before the internet age. All new MTs should be very grateful for the wonderful resources available on the internet, as they save a lot of research time.
Not personally, but hundreds have and have been complaining on the internet for years.
It's not a good school, they don't teach you enough for you to get a job, and the companies know it. They will not hire "grads" of Allied School. If you don't want to believe that, hey, it's your money.

I have heard there are companies that pay flat hourly, some that pay hourly plus volume pay, and then strictly per production. Anyone have any experience with these different pay structures? Know which companies do which (and will take new grads)?

most psych work is included in multispecialty hospital work..sm
contracted to a medical transcription service that requires multispecialty experience because of the hospital work. Unfortunately, very rarely can a medical Transcriptionist these days be given only one specialty when working for a service or hospital. We have to be well versed in multi specialties. The Turn Around Time on demands have increased, and thus the service or hospital gives the MT many different types of work. Learn as many specialties and gain as much experience in different specialties, which in turn will make you a more valuable MT and more apt to gain employment.
Good. The lab book was a good choice.
Be sure you look through each book when you get it. Put tabs on sections you will want to refer to quickly. I know my lab book (not Stedman's) has all kinds of extra sections. I think my next purchase would be the cardiac book. Then neuro or OB-GYN after that, depending on which you are getting more of in your work.

It might be tempting when you're getting desperate for work to pay someone so you can work for them, but don't do it. You can buy software and a foot pedal on your own, so don't let them fool you. If you are approached via e-mail from this site by an MTSO saying they have work for you, please read the posts below before making any decisions.

I know a good MT when I see one - regardless of
credentials, school or references. One run through the grammar screening knocks most of 'em right out of the ballpark...

That is great to hear that someone else was exactly where I am now. Where did you land your first job, not the MTSO, the other one?

companies that pay these low wages are taking advantage of new MTs that don't know their value yet. The MTs that received this offer had all spent thousands of dollars and a lot of time learning to become an MT. I just don't know why anyone would sell themselves short for 5 cpl ($10 an hour is generous by the way as most new MTs won't get to 200 lph). As I said, there are companies out there that pay better. If you are trying to help, steer the newbies to these companies, not the companies that have a reputation for not respecting their MTs. If you take the time, do your research, and graduate from a good school, you should have no problem finding a good job. I had 4 offers before I even got my final score. My first company paid 7 cpl and after 6 months, I took on my own client making just about double that.

My late Mother did the same thing. We didn't do homeschooling, but she did it all and did it exceptionally well. She was brilliant but never acted like it. She was a taxi to more than the 6 kids in our family. She taught piano, voice, directed the church choir, wrote plays (we were in them), was busy in RNC fund-raising, and on and on.
We just called her "Mother."

Appy anywhere and everywhere. There are a lot of companies who say they require at least 2 years experience, but you would be surprised at how many will give someone who has just graduated a chance. If you pass their test they will hire you, 2 years or not. I know from experience. I graduated last year and I applied to every ad that had a 2 year minimum, before I graduated. I got hired 1 week before I graduated, and I have been working ever since. Good Luck!

If you are looking for a quality MT education, the gold standard training comes from Andrews and M-Tec. Some graduates of Career Step have had good luck in finding and keeping employment also. The top schools turn out job-ready MTs. Employers are eager to hire them. The cheaper schools do not turn out graduates that employers are eager to hire.
