Amanda, you know what? I sat here all weekend thinking about offering Lisa an IC position (sm)

that might be able to help her out, as I work in 12-hour TATs, but the more I saw the posts left from her, the more I chose not to get involved. I come to this board for the specific reason of offering help, as I feel anyone who truly needs a break should be given the opportunity. However, Lisa has made it blatantly clear that the only opportunity she wants is on HER terms and I actually feel slighted that I was willing to take a chance with someone who comes across the way she has.
Also, I am offended by the fact that Lisa states her first job is "Mom," as if mine is not. Yes, I do WORK as an MT and I work hard at it, but I also am there for every single aspect of my children's lives, including class mother, PTA chairperson, basketball, softball, baseball, dance, etc. I work hard daily for the balance (without the benefit of my wonderful husband) and I MAKE it work for all of us and for that I am rewarded and blessed. How dare someone even critique my abilities, especially as a mother.

Thank You Amanda
You're absolutely right. It doesn't matter how "good" the supposed instructors are if you don't get the materials with which to transcribe. And if the company truly is that honorable, why do they not respond to my emails or deal with my request for a reimbursement? I have messages from five other people, printed, that had the same problems as I. So she's right about one thing - there IS only one bad apple. But it's not me. I have lots of apples on my side.
for Amanda,,,s/m
Thank you for your email. But I am not a newbie anymore. I have a job, but looking around for something better or to stay updated. Thanks.
This smiley I like most of all LOL !

I understand that EvCC students get access to the CS forums, as every one can. However, as an EvCC student, you are not able to take part in the Spheris Training Track and the new partnership with Focus Infomatics that is being put into place. That is true.
I recommend CS because I am a graduate from there and also an affiliate member. I think it is a great opportunity for some where as EvCC might be a better opportunity for others for certain reasons.
I am all for quality MT training, whereever one can get it. My personal experience is with CS and I like to help others know that the same can be true for them.
You are very dramatic, Amanda...
No one implied that you were awful. It is simply your opinion that a particular school is bad. You have every right to say that, but it does not make it true for every person. What is bad for you, may not be bad for the next person. Keep that in mind.
Some of the worst cut prices and keep offering less
There was one really disreputable school that constantly bragged about how much less they cost than everyone else and how everybody else was ripping you off because they made you study BOOKS! This school claimed it was different. They said the more expensive schools teach you more than you need to know. They didn't teach you like the other schools that teach you too much, because the owner of the school claimed you can't learn anything in school anyway. You have to learn it on the job. I couldn't believe my ears or eyes, since it was a message emailed to me.
Are you offering mentoring or an actual job for newbies? nm

Most places offering PT want minimum of 600 lpd. 1000-

Are there companies offering 7 cents a line to new graduates? sm
This person has been offered 6 cents a line but I know the company and getting a raise will be like pulling teeth even if you do excellent work. This graduate will be doing acute care and feel like 6 cents is okay for clinic but 7 cents is more in line for acute care. This student graduated with honors from MT course.
Do not give up Lisa.
Hang in there. Do not give up because some people are just jeolous and do not want to face their insecurities and would rather tear other people down to gain some self-assurance. There is more to life than that. Take care and God Bless in whatever you decide.
Hang in there Lisa!
Hang in there! Something will come your way that is the right fit. Our oldest son was killed in an accident and his two young babies came to live with us for a year. That is the same time I finished my MT education. I was hired before I finished school. I have worked from home from the beginning. I set my own hours, accept work or turn it down; however, I always meet my 24-hour TAT. There is the right "fit" for everyone out there. Don't get discouraged!
Lisa do not get discouraged!
Only you can make it happen. I would suggest you look at the job seeker's board here on this site. There is actually a job posted there today that is looking for "newbies". Everyone was new once. I did not attend a course per se. I learned anatomy and transcription in high school. I have many years of experience and am still learning every day. Please, do not let negative posters here misinform or discourage you from your endeavors. Do not fear the fact that you did not graduate from one of these so-called 3 great schools. Your work ethic will say it all, and yes even after 20 years, I still use a spellcheck and still leave blanks. It is inevitable, and you learn each and every day. Keep your chin up, and I am actually liking your attitude towards these negative people. Stand up for yourself as no one else will. There was another company called CLK Transcription that had posted a while back on the job seeker's board that wanted to mentor. This may be an avenue for you to stroll. You may not make the big money (none of us do on-line), but you will gain experience, hence, making it easier to find even your own accounts on-line. Kudos for taking life by the horns and riding it out. This is a great profession and much to be said for a job well done!!!!
Lisa, I don't mean to discourage you (sm)
but there are really only 2 factors to consider here:
1) your 6 children, and 2) the funds for MT school.
Personally, I think the fees for the so-deemed "best 3" are
exorbitant. I don't know the ages of your children, so the only comment, or advice, I can offer you is....by the time you get through school and get the number of years of experience to even get close to swimming above water, well....I think you get my point. When I tell people I work for pennies they think I'm kidding. LOL>some things never change. Unfortunately, this line of work is one of them.
Anyone else wish to chime in and help Lisa out please???
Lisa/Tech Skills
Lisa,
Did you attend that in AZ? I almost did that but decided to go another way.
Please read my thoughts on this, Lisa
I think part of the rub from your post, Lisa, is that you seem to think that you seem very self-centered. Honey, unless you have a disabled child that requires you to be in that house 24/7, you do NOT HAVE to work from home. You just want to really bad. Nothing wrong with that!
However, just because we don't tell you what you want to hear does not mean we are being rude. You just simply don't want to hear the truth.
You even said in one of your own replies that you have decided that your children's welfare was more important than hitting the TAT expectations. Great! You've made your decision! At this time in your life, this is probably not for you.
You can have it all, just not all the same time dear. Concentrate on getting your babies into school, then sit down and concentrate on your career while they are safely looked after in school and learning.
I don't see any reply to your thread as rude in the least. Even the newbies who are encouraging you will probably come back shortly to say they have had it with this profession because they cannot make what they want. Most do.
You've taken the really tough road by starting out at home. Learning inhouse is far better, easier on you, and easier on your family, actually.
While they see you typing at the computer all the time right in front of their little faces, they believe that computer is more important than they are. Wait until they are out of the house with school and then work. This way, when they are at their safe, loving home they feel their mommy is really there for them, not the computer.
Trust me, even later as teenagers, they will constantly complain that all you do is work, all you do is sit in front of the computer. You have tough enough times ahead! Don't rush it!
Good luck, dear.
Lisa, I understand your frustration, but I do have to agree with (sm)
Amanda that this must be looked at as a profession and simply not a convenient way to work while staying home with the children. I don't necessarily think you feel that way, but your post does come across as someone who wants their cake and eat it, too! It is very difficult to become an accomplished MT without the benefit of on-site experience, but it most certainly can be done. However, there are dues to pay when it comes to gaining your experience in a home setting and one of them is to be able to gain that experience at someone else's convenience.
Now, I am not saying that you have to be at available at someone's beck and call, but you do have to realize the time, effort and expense it costs the person mentoring you and appreciate the knowledge and insight so freely given to you. Many companies will not even give that chance anymore, so I would take it as a gift rather than an obstacle.
I have raised 2 children by the grace of working at home and without the benefit of a spouse, as I became widowed at a very young age, but that took a lot of determination, scheduling and humility to do so. It is not impossible and my long days and exasberating nights paid off in the end, but only because I was willing to work at it. I can say quite proudly that I have wonderful, well-adjusted children who have reaped the benefits of having their mother with them and have also learned the respect of a hard day's work.
Of course, you can always obtain your own clients and set your own hours, but you will not gain the knowledge that is required to become a proficient MT, as there really is no one to guide you in what you just don't know. However, if all you are after is a paycheck at the end of week without a true respect for this field, that might be the alternative.
I know it is hard - it is very hard, but if you truly want it you will to the lenghs to achieve it with an open mind and the willingness to reach your goals.
I wish you the best!!
Position
I have a newbie position available if you are interested. Please email me at proficienttranscription@hotmail.com
Getting a transcription position
I've worked for 19 years as a Transcriptionist for a mental health facility and now that I'm close to being able to retire, I'd like to do the transcription from home, but because I'm not certified, can't get a second look. Any suggestions???? Thanks
Terri
Position with Medigrafix
Brandy I went to the Medigrafix website and it states that you need 5+ years experience. How did you get the position as a newby?
Position at company
I am a newbie but would be interested in the company that is hiring. Could you how to reach them?
What is depressing is that someone in your position,
is posting a message about errors, and is not proofreading their own sentences. I found several grammar errors in yours, but I will not comment on that. LOL
I do understand what you are saying, but sometimes we are allowed to relax a bit and just take it easy. I am not applying for a job here. I am simply looking for constructive information. I will not put you down or anyone else who has their own reasons for mistakes that were made in messages posted here. I look at several MT boards on the internet and have learned a lot from the older MTs and I will continue to improve my skills no matter what it takes. I love it. I never claimed to be perfect or entitled to anything. Life has thrown me some curves, but it is getting better.
Seeking a position
I am generally good with different speech patterns, having lived overseas and around the military. I would really appreciate if someone could direct me to a site where I could internship/work/test for ESL accounts. Any suggestions? Generally, I enjoy the challenge of deciphering the word choice. It is almost like a puzzle. Am I crazy?
Employee Position
Hi Lori,
Check with someone at Career Step. They should offer you a listing of employers who will test their graduates. I am an M-Tec grad, and there are many job opportunities available for graduates. I would think that Career Step would offer the same thing. Since you have some experience under your belt, I am sure you would have no trouble finding a job!
Good luck!
Thinking of MT
Hi, I am exploring the idea of MT as a way to fund semi-retirement. We will be traveling, and I'm looking for something that can be taken up and put aside for days, weeks, or months at a time. So my question is, are there companies that let you join a pool and take what they want to offer when you are wanting to work? Or is this a career that you need to be working constantly or you're out? Thanks!
Thinking of MT
Thank you sm, that was very helpful. I do realize MT isn't a simple job. I've been a court reporter for 16 years and thought this might be a fairly smooth transition. May not be the retirement income situation I desire. Thanks for your response!
That was what I was thinking...
I was thinking maybe I wasn't hearing a lot of problems with them because they weren't having a lot of problems! lol That is one reason I was asking because I didn't know if a lot of them were finding jobs or just being tight-lipped about their experiences. Thanks for your response! I appreciate the info. I will check out the other board!
thinking of MT as second job
you know...there is a reason that MTs with tons of experience are asking what they can do instead. By the time you find and finish a good MT course...more and more jobs will have been outsourced to india or elsewhere. It is hard for ME to compete with that 5 cents a page thing...as a newbie it is bloody well impossible. The learning curve AFTER school is pretty long too. Instead of getting into the offshore mess...consider instead taking a course in medical coding. There is a huge huge huge shortage of certified coders. You can train to become a coder at home on your own time frame (AHIMMA has a very good on line course). YES it is tough...so is transcription...but almost any hospital/clinic of any size has at least one opening for a coder. They are not yet offshoring those jobs! YES you need to get certified...that's improtant to get a job. But at least check into coding instead.
Sounds like you need the position from Boo2
is requiring. Maybe you wouldn't have to look for a job, filling out those applications and trying to do those tests. Since you do not have children, you should have no problem at all with the turnaround. You two could be two peas in a pod. Oh, I'm bad, very bad! Take a taste of your own medicine, bitter or sweet? Lord, forgive me, please!
I still am thinking of canceling....
There is so much negativity regarding MT. I really think I am going to just cancel the program and at least recoup a little money. I am taking some college course right now and am trying to decide which degree program I would like to enter. But good luck to you.
How do I find a Newbie MT Position with No experience
Hi! Just wondering I am new to this and I am still in school but really would like to start working ....How Do I find a Entry Level position...These companies don't want anyone without at least 2 years experience and Up..What about the rest of us?
Georgia
Better paid healthcare position to MT here...big adjustment, but it's...
entirely worth it. The lower pay (at least for a while) versus the stress you feel as an RN - only you can decide, but in the long run I'll go with MT any day.
Also, if I were you, I would go with M-Tec rather than CS. It is a much more comprehensive program, and you will be much more prepared. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but you will have many, many job offers when you graduate and can pick what suits you best.
Can you please share the company that offered you a position? Thanks. nm
xx
I have finally graduated and accepted a position! I'm so excited!
For all of you still in school, don't give up! Get stubborn, work hard, and it will happen! Good Luck to all!!
Thinking about applying but have a question.
I currently work for a small MTSO and have a small account with her but there is not enough work to support myself. I realize newbies don't start off with the best pay and that is fine with me but, if you don't mind me asking, do they start you out with the usual 5-6 cents per line? Is it gross or 65-character? Is work pretty steady?
Thanks in advance for the info.
I'm thinking if I was selling something I wouldn't
point out the bad things about it.
That may be wishful thinking on your part
I think you've been proven wrong about the community colleges being good. Most of them are closing their MT courses because their graduates can't get jobs. Some of the others are still offering MT but they offer it with all sorts of other classes that have nothing to do with transcription. They aren't doing a good job of teaching people to transcribe though. They do a good job with terminology though, I will admit.
Please tell me about Focus, I'm thinking of applying.
Hello,
I have been thinking of applying to this company since I heard they are willing to hire newbies. I don't have much experience since graduating from my MT program, but really do need to make some decent money.
The only thing I have heard about this company is that they are Indian owned, thus offshore. I do not know anything about the pay, training, benefits, platform, QA relationship, recruiting practices or anything that might make me worry. Please tell me why you would not recommend them, I don't want to get stuck with a bad company. But I also realize that some companies are not good fits for some people.
Please reply here or by email if you like. I just want honest information. Are there other companies willing to hire and give new MTs a good starting chance?
Thanks.
Anyone even thinking of starting school SM
for this field, go to the Main Board and read the post from "I AM DONE" - I didn't type it, but it's a pretty good summary of what an MTs career ends up to be.
Thinking about MT as 2nd job - extra money
Hi there - I have a very sound career holding a Management position making great money, however we are trying to pay off bills and I thought I would pick up a second job. A friend told me about being a MT and at first I was kinda excited to start my research, then sites like this (some of the posts) have scared me. HOWEVER there are a good number of success stories. I think I may continue on, as this will not be my main job, just for extra income.
My question for all of you who are certified. I keep reading about the BIG 3 schools. I don't know who they are, but I was going to go to one of my technical colleges in my local area. Is that a no no in the MT world? I mean, it's an accredited school. I'm just scared that when applying for jobs, they will want those that came from the big 3 that you all are talking about.
If anyone can share information I would greatly appreciate it. Thx a bunch!!!
thinking about selling my transcription business...
and just wondering if any one has any opinion on interest in that. The person owning the company would make a minimum of $82,500 a year, running the business and doing some transcribing part time. It would be very easy to do some marketing and bring in some new accounts, which could easily push that 82500 to over 100000 a year. I have repetitive stress injury and my doctor has told me I need to find something else to do. I was thinking if there was an MT or a group of MT's (the company is incorporated so shares can be sold) that would like to get together, they can eliminate the middle man, earn retail price for their lines and establish job security, not to mention satisfaction. Price would be around $250,000 but like I said, a group of people could go together to cover that and with a little work in marketing, it could be paid off in three years. The business is about 10 years old and to the point where it is generating its own referrals. It could really go places if someone wanted to spend a little time marketing to a few new hospitals. Any one have any thoughts on this.
I was thinking the same thing....what a great way to advertise!!
,,
Does anyone have any experience with TRS Institute- thinking of applying.
