Agree with poster below. And we have way too many MTs and not enough jobs, especially for at-home

I agree with the poster sm
It took me five years to be "good" and I worked for a multispecialty service. I took all the work no one else wanted, as I came in later because I had kids, so they took all the good work and left me the ESL's. I didn't like it, but I tried hard and then I moved on to be self-employed. Those years of blood, sweat and tears paid off. Later when I had enough work to hire people, it was amazing how many thought they could just walk in off the street with a few courses under their belt. It just is not going to happen without the hard work first, they don't teach you enough in school to fit on the head of a pin. You have to walk the walk first, believe me, grab what you can and learn from it, you will NOT handle it right out of school unless you tough it out with someone else for several years. You will sweat it out, just keep learning. Take what you can and learn from it. School alone won't do it.

I agree with poster.
You are right. Ideally, only those with excellent grammatical skills will enter this profession. When I was hiring in-house transcriptionists, I gave them an untimed typing test. I knew I could train them in the terminology; it was the English/grammatical skills I was looking for. If it is not brought into the field, it will never be learned. Good posts, both of you, and great advice to all - including experienced transcriptionists.
I agree with above poster/CAI grad also
I graduated from the course in 2004 and have been working since. I have nothing whatsoever to say negative about CAI. I researched beforehand and found it to be affordable, thorough, and yes, the director is great at communicating quickly and answering questions.
I agree with other poster, M-Tec, Andrews, or Career Step (sm)
I have seen it happen many times when someone takes another course because it is cheaper and then cannot get a job. I had a couple relatives that took a local course because it was cheaper and they told them that they would be able to get a job and guess what? Neither can get a job.

I think most MT companies will not even let you take their test if you did not graduate from an accredited school or have experience. I know the big 3 are expensive, but you will save yourself from a big headache in the end. I did Career Step and it was expensive, but I think it was the least expensive of the 3.

Take our advice, do one of the 3. I think Career Step has a payment plan and probably the others do as well. I hope I have answered some of your questions.

Good Luck!
jobs at home for newbies?
I just wondered before I begin training, how hard is it for someone just out of MT training to get work at home?
No jobs for At-Home grads
I completed the At-Home course last Nov with a 95% GPA, and I still have not landed a job. I have sent out so many resumes and emails that I have lost count.

I even sent At-Home a letter asking if they would help me out, but their only response was that most MT's seek employment through the Internet; that's it. I don't know what they mean by 'graduate assistance.'

I have discovered through other MT message boards that the majority of At-Home grads cannot even get their foot in the door because of the lack of training/education. Even employers have posted statements that they too don't hire At-Home grads. If I don't find work soon I may have to study again with one of the top '3' schools that I've heard so much about.

I would never recommend this school to anyone!
JOBS??Home Based
Hi I was wondering if anybody could help me??  I am interested in finding a home-based medical Transcriptionist position.  I have experience in transcription and am enrolled in a transcription course.  Any leads would be wonderfully appreciated.  Thanks.  Jackie
Great choice for work-at-home jobs
I'm a physical therapist and an MT as well, not bad for a part-time job, plus you have to stay at home; although you are not going to earn as much as you do as RN. Working indirectly with the patient is as exciting as working directly with them. Good Luck!!
I also agree that there will be jobs for a long time. sm
Been doing this for 18+ years. You won't get rich, but you can make a decent living, at least as much as you would make on most secretarial or retail jobs, once you get the training. I make around $24,000 a year, but I don't push like I used to. I could make more teaching, have the qualifications, but nothing in the world would make me face that. It's a nightmare.

There will be decent jobs in transcription or editing for years, but not the gravy some of us are used to. Just a decent wage, probably average $12-18 an hour from now on, hope it doesn't drop lower. I don't think things are going to be too rosy in many other fields either, so I'll stay where I am until I'm ready to retire. JMO.
Still lots of in-house jobs on the big job search sites. The at-home US MT is going the way
s
You'll need to work 2 jobs at home to be able to live on MT. Or have a spouse + your income. Best
s
Still plentiful jobs in MT if you want to do it in-house. Lots of jobs
s
you did mean this for the other poster RIGHT?!
cause you aint saying nothing that pertains to my comment to the other poster.
When did the poster say THAT????

poster clearly said what client wants.....NM

Sorry the first poster felt she had to
It isn't MY problem that you want to vent on me, so take it elsewhere. I didn't pick and chose an account, obviously. I had asked to have a certain type of backup account, they said yes, then gave me something completely different. Tell me how that entitles them to "knock me down a notch". If they didn't have anything they could have just told me, but they didn't; they put me on something completely opposite of what I asked for. I didn't bust my butt going to school to just sit here and do nothing because there is no work. I worked to get my education to put it towards working. If I wanted to sit around and do nothing I would not have gone to college.

Thanks to mt45 for understanding what I meant. I only have certain hours that I can work, and when I am on time coming into work at those hours and I have nothing to do because there is nothing there I get ticked off. I do not plan on taking time away from my kids to complete work when it does finally roll in. As for the other account, I have begged and pleaded and had been told I would be put on a certain account and was not. I am upset because of this. I would have rather had a "no" than what happened. At least I would have been able to start looking for other work sooner! As for anyone else who might reply, please do not take my first post out of context as the OP did; I am not trying to put anyone down or be condescending, I am simply explaining my situation.
The other poster was not rude - she was right s/m
It DOES make a difference what school she went to and if she cannot find a job, it can certainly be related to the school. Sad but true that a lot of people spend - waste - money on 'MT certificates' that are not worth the paper they are written on.

Nothing wrong with preschool. I think what the poster was saying is...
That there is a difference between preschool (two or three hours a day two or three days a week) is not daycare (six to twelve hours a day monday through Friday). There is nothing wrong with preschool. I am also someone who agrees that daycare is a necessity for some parents, it certainly does not have to be for the creative MT!

I also agree with the poster who wrote that people are kidding themselves by using "daycare" and "preschool" interchangeably because one sounds better. My daughter goes to preschool at our church two days a week for two hours. Daycare kids go in the morning and are picked up after six hours or so. There is a huge difference. One is primarily for "social skills" (preschool)and one is a place for the kids to go while Mom and Dad work (daycare).

As a former teacher who did work in daycare in college, I agree with "No Way, No How". I would not put my child in daycare unless I HAD to, and that would never, ever be if I were at home!
I expressed my sadness about the poster's overall
attitude, not just about her attitude about her kids.  I have a right to my opinion, she to hers and you to yours.  My 2 yo only goes 3 days a week for a limited number of hours...it isn't just _daycare_.  I still work on the 2 days she is at home and I manage to produce 12,000 to 15,000 lines on those days, and yes, part of it is while she is in front of the TV but most of it is while she is asleep or playing at her different learning stations I have set up around the house.  Why is TV the ONLY choice or why is putting a child in daycare a bad choice?  If you don't know how to set up learning stations, LEARN!  Dexterity skills are crucial at the ages of the children mentioned.  Sorting and stringing buttons can keep a child happy for an hour at a time. I stand by my original post.  I have a good balance of all worlds and it is working well for me but the focus of raising my child is not dependent upon developing a TV zombie and I don't believe that should be the attitude of any newbie starting out.  That makes me sad for the newbie and the kids.
I posted it AFTER she told another poster to (sm)
kiss her, well, you know. That has been removed now though.
I had a post pulled once for mentioning my school because another poster had mentioned it (sm)

over and over again.  When I emailed the other poster, she forwarded me an email from a moderator saying that the mention school we were discussing WOULD get our posts pulled because it was "not up to the standards" of this forum or something, no matter that we both managed to get jobs just fine working for them.  I just thought that was stupid and it's no skin off my nose, but it did get posts pulled.  That was at least eight months ago now, so if things have changed now, good, and they should have.  But I still won't risk saying where I went to school.  I don't rock boats.

MT Jobs

I have been trying unsuccessfully to e-mail AAMT.  I am interested in knowing why someone with prior experience cannot take an abbreviated course rather than the full course like M-Tec and Andrews provide.  Of course, my experience is old, but I have basically kept abreast of what is going on in the MT world.  All of the schools seem to want to give complete courses.  In other words, everyone is treated like a beginner.

Thanks for any suggestions.

There are jobs
Jobs are available, but some companies don't want to put their resources into training new MTs. It's a costly process. Those that do hire new people prefer to hire from schools with a proven track record in providing solid training. I was offered a job with a large national before I even graduated, but I went to a top school. Even so, the company had to invest a lot of training and time in getting me up to speed. Choosing the right school is the key to doors opening when you graduate. If you didn't invest in a top-notch education, you may have to work harder to find that first job.
MT Jobs
Try Spheris.
LOOK AT ALL JOBS.
I have been doing this for three months, and I did the same thing on my resume. You might have to start at a low pay rate, but it will get you experience.
JUST HANG IN THERE!
Where are all the jobs
because I cannot find any since my graduation in November????? Need and appraciate any POSITIVE feedback.
jobs
Don't give up.  I just graduated in November, and I applied to EVERY place I could.  Even if they said that they only hire experienced MTs, I submitted a cover with my resume that asked for the opportunity to test.  Of course, I got several denials, but I got a few takers, too.  And, the great part is that I have been working since Thanksgiving!!!  Keep looking, you'll get there!!!
Jobs MT
I read your post and would like information about Sten-Tel, Inc. I just recently graduated from Career Step in Nov. 2005 and need to get to work. You can e-mail me. Thanks
I have 2 IC jobs..

I still haven't finished the course.  However, I have managed to get two great IC jobs paying 9 and 10 cpl for acute care while still taking the course.   I love doing acute care.  I think Career Step is excellent.:o) I'm sure the other schools are excellent too, but CS is the one I chose.

Subject: jobs

I love this board.  I will use this in the future if I am stumped.  I am done with school, involved in more training BUT now I need a JOB!! Does any one have a good job lead for me doing transcription?  I was laid off at my waitressing job Tuesday for the winter! YIKES!

jobs
No one deserves a job more than any other person simply because they are a mother. LOL

Whether or not she is a mother, if she cannot provide services when the employer wants/needs, she doesn't deserve the job.

IT IS BUSINESS!!!

jobs
Where is this job. I would be intrested. I just finished courses online and don't know where to start looking. Thank you
Jobs
Check with your school first. They should have a list of companies/services that hire their students. Also, talk to other graduates of your program and find out where they are working.

Depending on what course you completed a lot of companies will waive their experience requirements and let you test. I know that RI Unlimited lets grads from the top 3 test, but I don't know if they are hiring newbies right now.
Jobs
I have a year of on the job training with a company who has gone downhill.  Any suggestions as to a company that would hire me.  I am a stay at home mom who is trying to provide for her family without having to pay the high prices for daycare.  I have done radiology, mammography, and pain management.
jobs
I have done MRI/CT, and cardiology testing reports. I did not mention those because I thought that it went with doing radiology. I do thank you for your advice.
Jobs = yes
Just type in Radiology transcription or medical transcription on the internet and you will find 100's of jobs to apply for online. That's exactly what I did and it paid off. Be picky and take your time on the tests.
Jobs
Does CareerStep not have a placement program. I thought they did.
Jobs
I graduated from Career Step about 6 months ago.  I have a job with Focus Infomatics.  I also had an offer from MedGarde.   They do hire new graduates.  I hope you find a job soon!
Me too, But where are these jobs?
I worked as a nurse in psych, dementia and behavioral health before becoming MT. I would love to find this type transcription work. I haven't found this kind of MT work yet, and I've been looking too.
jobs

Seems to me if you have extensive experience you should be able to find a job.

jobs
I am a "newbie" just having finished my medical transcription course. can anyone point me in the direction of companies that will hire a rookie who wants to work from home?
MT jobs
How many of you have finished school (pls state which one) and started working soon after? Need to know!
GO WITH USA JOBS!
The companies who hire only USA workers proudly post that on their websites.  Support them.  Help them grow.  They do not hire someone to do 4 hours a day and call it full time.  They can not afford to waste valued MT time because we are all they have.  The reason you do not have enough work is because the companies are doing ALOT more outsourcing since January 1.  That is not going to stop.  Competition is fierce.  Older MTs are getting put out of their jobs due to outsourcing and EMR.  Land yourself a job with a U.S. company and even if they lose your account because the client wants to outsource, they will do everything they can to keep you and provide you with other work as their companies grow.

I am looking at schools for MT and want honest opinions which schools to avoid and which are good. Do they need to be accredited? and with who.  I currently have an appointment with Techskills. Thanks in advance for all replies
finding jobs

Alicia,

I completely understand what you are saying.  You said NOTHING about pay and just want a job.  Just ignore the nasty attitudes.  People like that obviously have nothing better to do than to get their BP pumped over petty things.  As for your question, I found out through my own experience when looking that sometimes even if they say 1-2 years experience, some will still allow you to test.  Quite a few companies were willing to test me even though they stated they wanted experience.  I say apply to everybody that requires 2 years or less.  Worst that can happen is they say no.

Here's a tidbit on the ladies who have a hard time keeping the peace, next time you go "off" on somebody, you may want to stop and think about it.  She could be the neighbor that made sure you had a few hot meals after the loss of a loved one.  You can easily say what needs to be said without being catty, leave that to the tweens!

God bless and Happy Holidays!

Where are all of the MT jobs I heard about?
I completed my MT training in September, and have not been able to find a job.  EVERYONE tells me the same thing - they need someone with experience!  As part of my training, I typed so many reports for all different specialties - isn't that experience?  Any ideas where graduate students can go to get a hospital, clinic, doctor, nursing home or MT service to give me a chance?  I am willing to take any typing or dictation test.  I got into this field because I thought there was a demand for the work.  Could have fooled me...
