I worked as a nurse for 20 years before I went into the MT field.  I have an actual DEGREE in this subject.  It has been very, very kind to me (especially before my children were grown).  It gave me the freedom to never miss a football game in my son's 4 years of high school, so for me it was worth it but I have done nothing but work my fingers to the bone for the last 10 years.  Don't get me wrong, there are perks, especially working from home but get ready........you pay dearly for the perks you get.  Worth it?   For me, yes, but then again retirement is not a word that will ever be in my vocabulary.  I will work until the day I die and/or am finally sent to a rest home somewhere.  It's pretty much like pick your poison.  Independent contractor?  Be prepared my dear.  You had better well be able to manage your money and deduct your own taxes or the IRS will become your daddy if you get what I mean.
