Immigrants make cents on the dollar, so what are they gonna tax? When they become citizens, they get more benefits from the gov't, like healthcare, food stamps, costing the U.S. more money. There is construction in my area, Spanish words flying all over the place, i'm willing to bet I can't find a handful of them with a greencard. Gimme a break. Its ALLOWED to go on. There are too many of them here for it not to be.

Don't know what you're complaint you're making with this post. sm
You stated in your original post that you don't want to work weekends or odd shifts. What is your definition of an odd shift? Second shift? Third shift? Sounds like you want to work M-F on days. Sounds kind of rigid to me.
Personally I like second shift, so everyone working days means more work for me!
Well you're sure making some assumptions here
all of which are about them not valuing you enough.
Maybe they want you to stay longer than just Thanksgiving day because they want to spend some time with you, and maybe that is why they are suggesting you come the day before and stay until the day after. Maybe it has nothing to do with not valuing you enough to go pick you up at the train station. Maybe they miss you and want to see you.
It's just a guess, but I'd be willing to bet you don't have a great relationship with them to begin with and don't see them often. Maybe they don't know how to say to you comfortably that they would like to see more of you. Maybe they really, really want to see you, and think that because you only intend to come for one day that you don't really want to see them very much.
Why don't you just go see them, keep an open mind, examine your assumptions to see if they are appropriate, be willing to have a good time in spite of yourself, and do whatever is necessary to repair your relationship with them? Can't hurt, might help.
And enjoy the turkey and pumpkin pie!
No they're not because I'm making more money on it....sm
than before the program was implemented. I also know others who are making more money per hour - and no one argues with more moolah!
Thanks! You're right; it's all about making the right choices. NM

You're making it much harder

We're not basing this on what YOU are making.
300 lines per hour equals $24 per hour. Even taking out for taxes and such, she is still doing well for a low-stress easy job. JMO. Sorry you are making crap at 8 cpl, but some of us do well at the same rate.

300 lines per hour equals $24 per hour. Even taking out for taxes and such, she is still doing well for a low-stress easy job. JMO. The question was is 8 cpl ALWAYS too low a rate. Sorry you are making crap at 8 cpl, but some of us do well at the same rate, so no, 8 cpl is not always too low.
Geez, you're just making this too easy!
I worked for yeeears for a company where I was the primary MT on the account. I produced what they considered to full-time MTs (no bennies except taxes being cut and matched). I earned $4000/month. I later went to work in the office and happened to see an invoice to the client. I did the math and I realized they were clearing an additional $4000/month just based on my production. So they were making twice again as much as what they paid me.Was I immature enough to think I DESERVED MORE? No!
I had a good gig and I knew it. I knew how valuable I was to both the client and the MTSO. I knew how long I had worked this account, how certain doctors would only accept my work, how many of those doctors seeing my work at the hospital went back to their practices and signed on with that MTSO because of the quality of my work increasing the MTSO's business in the process. I was loyal to them and they were loyal to me. On the 3 occasions I ran out of work, they paid me 2 weeks pay just so I wouldn't take a job somewhere else.
But let's analyze this since you seem you jumped on my wardrobe size.
First you need to understand this is a country where capitalism is own of its primary foundation. Next you need to understand that out of that profit, the owner had to pay herself (how many times did she call me for help at 11:00 on a Saturday or Sunday because people bailed on her and she had alread worked 20 hours that day and just needed someone who would help her out?). In addition to having to do MT work, she had a business to run. That means maintaining good will. You know, visiting your clients, checking in to see how things are, what can we do for you...in other words, being the marketing person also. And god forbid she have a private life.! She had to pay an office manager to manage all the qurky personalities of the at-home MTs, the daily vascillating work flow, putting out fires and preventing them, etc. Next she had to pay her bookkeeper because god forbid anyone's paycheck was late or incorrect. Then she had to pay a computer tech to help set up the new MTs, manage computer issues, make sure all the clients got their work, set up new clients, maintained the ASP, etc. She also had to pay the in-house MTs. She had to pay her accountant to make sure the books were in proper order and do yearly taxes, keep up with adding new state taxes to the computer when she hired an MT from another state.
She had to pay rent, electricity, phones, toll free lines for all her long-distance MTs, liability insurance, provide computers sometimes with no notice because someone's computer died overnight and she couldn't afford down time for that MT or the client, provide computer equipment for the client's, provide C-phones and Lanier stations, pay someone to clean the office twice a week...
Is the big picture a little more clear? Where does this new-age feeling of entitlement come from? Geesh, am I the only one on this site who can remember trying to pick 100 lbs of cotton in a day and feeling satisfied if I got near that figure? And I'm in my 40s!
The world doesn't owe you anything. It was here first.
You're okay making LESS than you made 10-20 years ago?
I'm not. No, every "job" doesn't work itself DOWN the ladder of success. I'm working to earn a living, I'm working to have goals, to better myself and my way of life. I would never settle for a job that keeps paying less and less. Sorry, but I disagree with you but to each his own.
Mmmmm, now you're making me hungry. nm

Oh, okay. So if we're really calling things for what they are....
you must be in luck today! I don't use the language it takes to call you what you are! We CAN beat around the bush though -- thy Queen of the Canine Females. ROFL
You're talking about two different things.
I never said it was okay for a company to pay their bill late or not at all. I did say it's not true that a company is responsible for a person's financial situation. There are many factors that result in personal financial hardships--illness and debt to name just two. Good financial planning means that you have enough cushion to handle the bumps in life, including a late paycheck. Sure, paying late is an inexcusable problem, without doubt. Projecting the blame for bad financial planning on the company is not appropriate.
Well those things aren't "fudging" -- they're being more SM

Like all other things in this world, they're guilty until proven innocent.
I think that totally stinks! Of course, you're only his mom and certainly do not know everything he does, right.
sure i was. i'm making fun of the people who are making a case for background checks, etc
to do medical transcription at home as if they may do something AWFUL with the info they receive. So if you want an invasion of privacy let's REALLY invade it and make sure fat chicks don't transcribe because they are so busy eating they can't get the work done, they mess up the keyboard with food and if they are provided health insurance they will raise the rates for the company sky high because their health risks are higher than others. Then there are the psychological issues overweight people bring to the table. After we eliminate fat people, we can go on to eliminate diabetic people who may have low blood sugar while typing and go into a spell and type the wrong thing. I could go on and on through the process of elimination. How about prescribed medications that may cloud your thinking? So you take Ambien to sleep but you have an Ambien groggy hangover when you are transcribing? Should they transcribe. How about your teens are on your last nerves and you take a Xanax? Should you be allowed to transcribe?
Bad things? what bad things? people's being petty and small?

Well, you're all complaining that accounts are current and work is low, so, gee, maybe they're

You're probably right. Plus we're losing our percentage of good people by .... (sm)
allowing every loser from every 3rd world country on the planet to just stroll on into our country, some legally, most illegally, and take advantage of the social services all us hard working little gerbils pay for by having money taken out of our pay every month. But I don't think we're all lazy. Just the ones on permanent welfare driving around town in brand-new Cadillac Escalades. Saw one just today on the Bayshore Fwy. Brand-new black Escalade with expensive spinner wheels, with 5 or 6 Mexicans in it. Well, who knows - maybe they stole it and it was on its way to a chop-shop. Smart-and-hungry people aren't always hard-working and honest.

You're forgetting all the stuff you can't buy when you're UNEMPLOYED!
Unemployed people have a hard time buying anything, including cheaply made offshore products. How many will have to end up depending on public assistance? That means more tax dollars being eaten up - besides the taxes NOT being collected from the overseas workers. In the long run, are you really enjoying a lower price?

You're not losing it, you're burned out on your main job.
I feel for you... I am having my own "version" ;-) of these kinds of struggles. Lots of recent changes at the admin level have made my job do a 180, going from a really great one to a really crappy one.
For me, it's a struggle to get through the day with a shred of motivation. I get distracted in the way you discuss as well.
I just try to make my environment as comfortable as possible and make the best of it while I decide what the best way is to deal with the burnout... I figure if I can't change my inner brain workings so that I still like this job, I need to find another one, or this feeling will possibly get worse!
I hope it works out for you. Wish I had some better advice for you, but this really does look like burnout and extreme job dissatisfaction to me. We all wear it differently. Try to be good to yourself while you figure out a solution.
You can't make things worse and could make things better.

If they're withholding taxes, you're not an IC.
As an IC, you should already be paying taxes. That said, the only benefit having them withhold FICA is that your Social Security/Medicare share will be less. Social Security is 15%; if you're an employee, you pay 7.5% and your employer pays 7.5%. As an IC, you pay 15%. Doing the math, 0.0925 would be your 0.10 minus 7.5%--the 0.0924 is just a tad less than you're making now.
We're out here (good MTs) but we're busy! sm
I don't recall ever taking an employment test where I wasn't offered a job. My MTSO does not even look at my work unless I happen to have a question or a blank, which happens maybe once in every 30 or so reports with an ESL. If you find a really good MT, how much training would be involved? Certainly you would save time in the long run once they're trained and you don't have to check all their work.
If you're one of the MTDesk clan then you're ok
wersdffa
You're right if you're single it's tough.
I am an IC as well, but I have a husband with benefits and makes a fair buck. I am fortunate after 20 years to able to work from home. I worked on site for 17 years with a "chocolate cake" the day I left. Nothing more... The loyalty in any profession is gone, gone, and gone again.
Most companies want new employees/ICs that will take low pay and that won't cost much in the way of paying vacation time.
I do take every Friday off and try only to get on to check e-mail, etc.
However, I wouldn't trade being here for my kids at this point.
There are headaches no matter what profession you are in. It seems if it isn't one thing it's another.
Raises? Out of the question in this profession since most are afraid they will lose the account including myself. I also underbid my last account because I wanted the account so bad. I should be charging more.
It is a neverending cycle really.
But, I still enjoy the work, so I guess that's the difference. It does take will power to sit and type. Some people need that boss hanging around to keep the production up and the incentive of a nice paycheck is just not good enough.
Good luck with your new job! Sounds great!
If you're new, good - if you're not a newbie, not so hot
Would need to know how long you have been an MT. For a newbie, this is a pretty good rate of speed.
However, if you have anything over a couple years of experience, then this is not too hot.
Also, what are the dictators like? Is it a "United Nations" account??
If you ARE capable of 200 lph or more and you can't seem to get it, then the problem has got to be with the platform you are using. In my experience, the platform into which you transcribe can make or break your paycheck - so if the platform stinks, then I hate to tell you, but there is no way you will be able to improve your line rate. I have quit jobs because of awful platforms more than once.
making up.....
I suggest you have your father read my post and explain it to you. Apparently you have poor comprehension skills. Talk about ignorance.
My point was NEW immigrants who come here not to become American. Obviously, this is not apply to all NEW immigrants, because as we know, many of them bust their butts to become American in every way including service in the military. My point was that so many of the NEW immigrants, meaning those from the last 25-30 years, come with different aspirations than previous groups. This is documented by social scientists who have been studying this very point for a couple of decades. Look up some articles in any journal of American sociology or political science and you will find research on this subject.
I am perfectly aware of New Spain and New France and even that Russia once owned parts what is now Washington state and Oregon. Do the people in Northwest US demand to have legal papers printed in Russian because 400 years ago, Russia settled that land? Are you aware of the language controversy in Quebec, Canada? We don't need that in this country and having English as our accepted common language has helped prevent some of the fighting and death that results from people coming to blows over language. Language is the root of "the Troubles" as the Irish call their 100 years of conflict with England. England passed a law making English the official language and forbad Gaelic in public places, including schools. Look how that has worked for them. In the U.S., it has worked because it has been understood as a custom and new immigrants were proud to learn English, because it was a mark of American citizenship.
You need a history lesson - New Spain was SOLD to the U.S. government and New France was sold to the U.S. government by their respective kings because France and Spain needed money to finance their wars with each other. So, Spain left voluntarily.
BTW, my brother wrote my parents in English during WWII and his letters were confiscated - is there a group that will protest such actions again Irish-German Americans?
Wnat to see what ignorace looks like? Got a mirror?
I am making......
17.00 per hour with a home-based hospital job (you have to be local to the hospita) PLUS a generous incentive with a "quite easy to attain" minimum line count and then 8 cents a line after the minimum is met. Plus I have all the benefits of being an employee (which I am) including paid vacation and benefits. I've been the national route and I didn't find any of them to be paying well, plus I was always running out of work. We are swamped all the time and NEVER run out at the hospital. If we do run out, which has never happened, we can go into the department and shred paper or something. I wish more hospitals would go back to having a department. That's where you'll find your dignity IMHO.

you can make $12.50 an hour doing data entry and not know one

Making more now
I worked for a hospital for 5 years and then we moved... tried another national who didn't pay much, and then started with OSi and am making more than I ever have (including 25 years of secretarial work)! I've read so many negative posts here about OSi, but I think those who have complaints tend to voice them more than those who don't. I'm very happy with them as far as money, schedule, and flexibility. I know from reading previous posts that many will assume I'm part of management just trying to give them a plug. No, I'm not part of OSi management. Just a very happy transcriptionist.
Men Making More LOL
That is because they choose wisely and don't accept just anything. I am female and quite often make more than most women. Having been in the MT business for only 3-4 yrs I am constantly amazed at the rates offered and accepted, and the lack of understanding at the complexity and enormity of education required to do this job. When someone offers me a low salary I tell them what I think of it and just go on to the next company. I have always known why there aren't a lot of men in MT work - the salary. In places where typing pays decent $$$ there are tons and tons of men.
