and have for each that hospital's medical staff websites and frequently more

Most hospitals and MANY clinics and medical practices have their own web sites which helps a lot.

If you know the city and/or speciality, even plain Google searches can be an easier search than some of the "physician profile lists" -- just because half the time they seem to include every doctor in the state.

Also, fwiw, I keep a copy of state theagapecenter.com page (which is usually the first google hit if you ask for say "Indiana Hospitals")bookmarked as well. Very helpful in finding correct spelling of town and county names. it's worth the effort.

I was hired for a specific account/specific

work type.  I've learned the dictators, done the macros, now  they need to hire new MTs because the workload has increased, so they switch me to a very difficult account, doing everything but my normal work type.  Does this make sense?  I'm productive on my original account, not productive on new account, plus I'm majorly stressed. I do ESL 90% of the time but the new account is really horrible, not only ESL but they mumble and the quality of the dictation is bad.  If you took a new hire and put them on this account and they stuck it out, maybe they wouldn't think these dictators would be so bad.  I've talked with the MTSO and they say they'll switch me back and that lasts 2 weeks and then back to this horrible account.   It would be different if they called and said we need you to do this account for a couple of weeks, but it doesn't pay enough for me to do from now on.

I understand this is the way the business is and my griping probably isn't going to help anything, but I just had to get it out.

You're gonna have to check with the specific account on this one..........nobody goes by the sam
:)
Working out of folder
I d/l doc/voice files off system and put into folder.   I get the docs out of the folder, click on same job number on player and away I go.  When done, I put back into system manually, when I am ready to.  I don't have to wait for platform to open doc. and I don't have to wait for platform to load it back into system before I can move on to the next job, I have control over that.  I have found that the more control I have over my jobs, the quicker and more efficiant I can be.
Put the files in their own folder then
right click to send to zip folder. Beware that you may not compress the files enough if you are sending them.

direct all her mail to its own folder
most email clients allow you to do this. Then once a month delete it all. It never shows up in your main in-box
Just go to "open", go to your template folder - sm
open up the document/template you want, make your changes and save it. Very simple. I do it all the time with letters (put in the date so I don't have to type it 20 times).
yes. outlook 2003 has a sent folder also, but--sm
it is all added in to the quota email set by ISP. sent folder, inbox folder, local folder whatever, it is all a part of the ISP quota for email capacity. I use Time Warner Cable Roadrunner and even with biz class, capacity for email storage, sent, inbox, etc. is 256mb. that is all I am saying about this. I don't want to start a flaming argument..
I invoiced my folder for today and at 10 cpl for a
65-character line WITH spaces it came to $140.90. The invoice for the same folder with 7.5 on gross line NOT including blank lines came to $148.90. Hope that helps.
You should be able to find the folder on your puter sm
and open it in word or notepad and see everything there.  Check out the Instant Text site for their forums, I am sure there is a blow-by-blow there for you to follow.  I have never done it, so I am not 100% sure.
I have mine all upload from a folder on my PC.
I just go and periodically clean out that folder.
Find your sh9 folder on your computer. then sm
find all files in that folder that end in .spf. These are all your dictionaries. Select the ones you need to copy and copy them onto whatever media you're using to transfer. Then you just paste them into the ShortHand folder onto the new computer, and voila! REady for use on the new computer.
My Documents is a folder, not a program.

If you have Windows XP - go into Microsoft Word and then under file click open - there should be a box on the left side that has the following History, My Documents, Desktop, Favorites. Click on the Favorites and see if they are there. If not check your recycle bin to see if you deleted your history and files of your favorites by mistake - there is probably an easier way but I just did this and found all my favorites. Hope this helps.

Here is another nice tip:

Messed-up Typing

If you are a new Word user, you may have noticed that there are many ways you can mess up your document using Word. This comment isn't meant to be flippant or disparaging. The truth of the matter is that Word provides quite a bit of editing power. Along with that power goes the ability to mess up a document if the powerful tools are not used correctly.

A very simple example may be in order. Let's say you are typing along, and you look at your document. You notice that some text you previously entered is gone, and each character you type seems to also delete a character. What is going on?

If this happens to you, stop for just a moment. Take a look at the status bar at the bottom of the Word document window. If you see the letters OVR in bold type on the status bar, the problem is that you have inadvertently hit the INSERT key as you were typing. When you do, Word enters a special editing mode known as "overtype mode" (that's what the OVR characters stand for). While in overtype mode, everything you type replaces something else in your document. For instance, when you type a letter, it replaces the letter to the right of the insertion point. When overtype mode is not active, your text is inserted where the insertion point is located.

To undo your messed-up document, first turn off overtype mode by pressing the INSERT key again. (The OVR characters on the status bar should no longer be bold.) Then, press CTRL+Z to undo your last edit. You can continue to press CTRL+Z until all the characters you inadvertently overtyped are again within your document. Now you can go ahead and continue typing without overtyping your original text.

The otherwise is one of my favorites. How about a ...sm
small 1-cm incision? Is there a large 1-cm incision? Why is it I only hear a linear longitudinal incision but never a linear horizontal incision. Another one I hear frequently is the surgeon removed "all dead and devitalized tissue". Another one is "I put sutures in both the subcutaneous tissue, as well as the skin". Good grief! Of course I do edit, transcribe dead/devitalized, take out as well as, etc., but some you just have to leave as is.

Try Folder Options in Control Panel.

Go to the View tab and then click Show hidden files and folders.  I hope this works.

If you right click the folder, it should highlight it and give you
a drop down menue with the option to rename. Let me know if that helps...

If you have WinXP, you can do a system restore by going down to the bottom left-hand corner and clicking on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.  There you can restore your computer to a time before the the folder was lost.  It's very simple and doesn't take very long, maybe 10 minutes or so.

Buy new and copy your favorites.
Just buy a new computer and copy your favorites to it. It's very easy to do. If you cannot copy the file the favorites are in to a disk and transfer them that way, write down the URLs and re-enter them by hand on your new machine.

It is unlikely that anyone will allow you to buy the company machine. That, and their requirement that you not engage in personal entertainment or business with it, is not meant to treat you like a child or to make your life difficult.

This is an effort to comply with computer security requirements mandated by HIPAA. As a part of their business partner agreements, the company has to uphold the same privacy and security standards as the client. That will include restricting access to patient information contained on hard drives, as well as ensuring that information in computers is not affected by malware that can be picked up from visiting unauthorized sites on the net or personal email.

If this bothers you, imagine how much more it will bother you for transcription to cease being outsourced, which looks to be the security solution some large interests are looking at.

Hey! Why did they delete the entire comedy folder from this site?

my line counting software changing the variables to gross lines.  I'm sorry that this subject offends you so much, but there is a difference between line definitions and all MTs should be aware of this.
Exactly - create an email folder specifically for that company sm
and save all pertinent emails in that folder (just drag and drop). I have one for each of the companies I work for and I keep everything for a minimum of 3 to 6 months, longer if I think it is important.

How do I make SmarType recognize a Blocks folder? sm
I just transferred my "blocks" folder which contains standards for my docs over to another computer with a thumb drive. I installed Smartype on that computer with the CD. I restarted the computer and SmarType is working, but it is not my standards are not coming up when I type in the abbreviations. How do I get the program to recognize the standards in the "blocks" folder? TIA
Win XP? Were you changing folder options in Windows Explorer? sm
Go back into Windows Explorer and look at the options on the general tab of folder options. I no longer have XP and don't remember the exact name of the option you need to clear the check, but you should be able to recognize it.

references
None that include crepitants, because it IS NOT A WORD!! Which is why she never came back with a reference for it.
my references
Vera Pyle's Current Medical Terminology shows scapholunate all one word, no hyphen. (No H by the way). Does not list LT.

Stedman's Orthopaedic words
lists SL hyphenated ~and~ not hyphenated. (Also no H)
Lists lunate-triquetral
but word not listed as you have it spelled.

Claudia Tessier "The Surgical Word Book" lists SL without a hyphen (again, no H). LT not listed.

Hope this helps :-)
Here's my take on references.

I've seen some ads here asking.  Apparently, this is the new trend.  It may be a way for these companies to check you out or a way for them to get back at us here for slamming them pubicly if someone has had a bad experience.

The problem with giving your current employer is as the poster stated above.  The problem with giving references if you're an IC and have your own accounts is giving that company access to your clients' information, which I would never do.

If I were you, I'd talk to some friends that know you're work ethic.  References do not have to be in a supervisory position.  If you worked in an office and know you could rely on the receptionist, then give her name.

I never give out my contact info for my current clients on my resume in case these online MTSOs are looking to compete with me with their flashy equipment and low prices.  I am very general, and I feel safer that way.  If they cannot tell from your resume that you have enough experience, then they need not hire.

No references
I am working two part-time jobs, one as an IC for hospital and one for a national. I did not need references for either job. I previously worked for MQ and I don't think they give references anyway, and all the other companies I worked for have gone out of business.

Also I did not test for either job either. Was hired after a brief phone call for both jobs.
references
You may not need any. A lot of people are in the same boat and no doubt just use personal friends. If you are good at what you do, you will be in demand. Explain your situation and they will understand.
References--who?

Just curious--I don't know if it is just me or if anyone else has this problem, but besides your employers or former employers, who do you use for professional references if you work at home all the time and don't socialize with other MTs or belong to any MT associations, etc? I have been working at home in my own cocoon for 7 years and am filling out an application for MDI. They ask for 4 professional references. Anyone else run into this dilemma? I always just give my employers' names, but I don't want to list my current one.

I never put down references. nm

References like these would help

It could be difficult for some but not as much if you have some good resources, books or online resources. You'd have OP reports and that can be tough but again you'd get the hang of it. Sites like these would help.

LOL, and the good accounts are all taken by favorites (sm)
but they are always looking for experienced MTs for the bad accounts.
A bag of jelly beans is one of my favorites.
Use a large clear bag (if you can't find a clear trash bag, a drycleaning bag will work but does tear easily), cut holes in the bottom of the bag for your feet to go through and fasten the top around your neck.  Fill with a variety of colors of small balloons.  The small ballooons used for water balloons (however just fill them with air) work great.  Take the label from a bag of jelly beans and enlarge it on the copy machine and either trace it onto the front of the costume or could even just adhere the copy to the costume.  Doesn't work well if you have to travel very far in a car or have to sit very much, however!
