I think about that, I had hospitalization from State Farm, but it became too expensive for me, SM
so I dropped it. I was speaking mainly of doc office visits.

If push came to shove and I had to be hospitalized, I guess I would have to set up some kind of payment plan. I'm not saying it is the perfect plan, I'm just saying I am one of those without health insurance, but I still get medical care.
Liability Insurance
I carry a $1 million umbrella policy that covers basically anything that happens at my home or in my car, except weather and acts of God.  This policy costs me $213 per year and I feel that it is well worth it.
somebody please help me liability insurance
i have a job offer that requires liability insurance.  company is accuscribe.  i have no idea where to go to get this insurance or how much it costs.  i am really confused.  somebody, please help me!
E & O Liability Insurance
E & O Liability insurance with AAMT runs $300 per year.
Do most IC's buy liability insurance?

I cannot afford to buy this insurance. Am I jeopradizing my home, etc.

I keep wondering if this career is worth it.  I seem to put in so many long hours and do not get paid what I really put into it.  On the other hand, I do get that freedom of completing the work when I choose and whether it is in my pj's or not.

Just wondering.

E&O Liability insurance
I realize many of us think we do not need this insurance.  Unfortunately, a local area hospital thinks I do to work for them.  Someone had told me they got this through their home owners policy.  Any ideas on how to do that?  I'm not a member of AAMT.  I checked into it before, and it was rather expensive buying it outright from an insurance company.  Thanks.  I need to find more work and, unfortunately, this is what this hospital requires.
That's not true. You do not need liability insurance SM

I went through a similar situation not too long ago.  My lawyer informed me that I do not need this insurance.  The dictating physician is responsible for the content of the dictated file and if he/she fails to read it/correct mistakes before signing off - he/she is the one that buys the farm, not the transcriptionist.

In other words, error and omission insurance is a crock.

Professional Liability INsurance?

Does anyone have this through AAMT?  If so, how much did you pay for it?  If not,  are there other options out there?   I'm looking into errors and omissions and I read about this, and think it would probably be just what I am looking for, but I am curious about the price before I pay for an AAMT membership! Thanks.

Liability Insurance Rates? Does
anyone have a rough guesstimate of how much this could run an IC? I have been to various websites and got to an actual policy application form, but they only specify a cost of around $84 to $100, but don't say if that's monthly, quarterly, annually, etc. Anyone have an idea? Thanks!
Do any of you ICs out there carry your own liability insurance if
you are working for an MTSO?  I do not carry this insurance and was looking for what you all can advise me.  Thanks.
Does anyone have liability insurance? What can you tell me about it? Wondering if I (am IC) need i

Call your state insurance comm. office
In some states, they cannot make you take out these insurance policies unless you want them or unless you don't have insurance on something that might be collateral for your loan (i.e. an automobile).  Are you saying the insurance alone was $2000+ or the entire balance?  That question is really NOMB, but I ask because if it is simply the insurance premium cost, I would think you could find such at a much less expensive rate going with a private insurer.  I'm an IC and I have disability as well as $250,000 of life insurance on me and the DH and $50,000 on the three kids and I don't pay $2000 per year for all of that.  If they coerced you into taking out these policies, you should be able to cancel them.  In my state, I have three business days to cancel a contact or any part thereof.  Check with your state insurance commissioner's office.  Good luck.
no liability on IC's because MT's dont' have liability
-- the docs do. I have yet to hear of an MT in court because of what she transcribed...so don't worry about the liability. Big panty wadder coming from insurance companies.
I provide the template, I don't provide the headings though.
but I do pay them for everything that they transcribe. So, the MT has the initial template, they fill in the demographic fields, the body of text, cc information, etc. and that's what they are paid for. The body of text that the MT transcribes would include headings such as Subjective, Objective, etc., however the actual template that includes the logo, wording such as Patient Name, Date of Service, Attending Physician, etc. are not paid for. The template consists of about 8 lines total.
Not an owner and I do not farm out

I agree that no one should work for $10.00 an hour in this profession.  Funny how I've gone from someone new in this thread to someone who owns an MTSO in this thread.  Wrong and wrong.

I have my own accounts and do my own work.

I just feel that if you form a group of burnouts, then you continue to be a burnout forever.  My initial thought was that only burnouts are invited to form a group by the OP?  What about new grads that have a lot to offer in this field that would love to be sitting in some of these burned out seats making some money.

If someone has been burned out time and time again, it is time to look inward at one's self and their choices in their career.

I think it would take one burn out session for me to know this is not my gig.  I'm not so sure I'd look for other burn outs to join me in my misery.

Yeah, I'll just look into being a migrant farm worker instead then
Reach for those stars!
Hi NYNT - wegmans owns their own chicken farms and this a video from a farm...but

supposedly it is the industry standard on how these animals are treated...you cannot even imagine the cruelty in your imagination.

Wegmans has officially denied it, I believe.  I shop there still, but I refuse to buy chicken products/eggs there, and I usually mention it at the checkout whenever they ask if I have found everything...

Obviously, just me not buying those products does not help, but I can live with myself that way...now that I have that knowledge.

Beef, turkey, pork - it is all going on all over the country, wherever you buy it, whoever supplies it to the stores.  More and more even the people working at the meat plants say the animals are not even dead when they are cutting them up...it is cheaper not to have to anesthetize them or kill them first.

The animals are filled with chemicals, also, and hormones, etc.  Does that have to do with these really tall kids I see lately (smile) just a thought!

Liability
What company is this for?
What about liability???

Found a hard working young mom who desperately needs income.  Told her I'd pay her $12/hr to help me get my home spring cleaned.  But, I wonder about liability should she or her son (she needs to bring her 3 yr-old son with her) get hurt on my property.  Or, heaven forbid, she stoops to the low road and scams me.  I do not know her well and she seems relatively honest but I am paranoid.

Should I have her sign a waiver???

ESL's a liability?
Imagine if the messed-up phrase had been directly linked to some life-or-death decision, or an allergy to medication, peanuts, or whatever. Makes me wonder if hospitals & clinics have ever thought about the possibility legal trouble an ESL doctor can cause by not being able to speak clearly.
ICs and Liability
Does anybody know how liability is handled if a transcription mistake causes harm to a patient if the Transcriptionist is an "Independent Contractor?"

Is liability insurance one of the first things an IC must purchase? Does the MTSOs customer who hired the MTSO as an IC think it's a good idea to SUBcontract the transcription work to a subcontractor who may or may not be insured?

Speaking of ICs...I found the following link on the U. S. Department of Labor's website most interesting:
http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs13.pdf

It seems that a lot of transcription companies are illegally viewing employees as "independent contractors" when the criteria for such are not being met.

For example, if you hire an INDEPENDENT contractor to remodel your house, the contractor presents YOU with the contract, not the other way around. (Hint: The one who presents the contract must be the contractor!) The contractor presents you with the bill when the work is finished; you don't tell him what your "hourly rate" is.

You meet with him and come to an agreement as to price, what work you want done, and other things that both of you agree on.

However, you do NOT tell the contractor what tools they will use, what shifts they will work, or what equipment they will use to do the job. You can't say things like "I don't like DeWalt power tools. Go out and buy all Makita power tools if you're going to work on MY house."

Read what the U.S. Department of Labor says about Independent Contractors and how narrow that scope really is. Then, the next time a company hires you as an "independent contractor," act like it. Present them with YOUR contract and tell them what YOUR rate is. If they start talking about their cpl rate, then they're an employer, not your "customer." Remember, REAL ICs are the ones that bill for their work.
I bet other insurance carriers have insurance for their employees. Why not Wal-Mart? nm

Virtually no liability as an MT...sm
you never hear about transcriptionists getting sued. You could just increase your homeowner's coverage to a 1 mil liability coverage - which would give you 1 mil liability for everything, not just getting sued as an MT. But I don't carry it and I don't know anyone who does. I have a small service and even when I sign contracts with hospitals that require vendors to carry insurance, they just write a line through that clause.
Not what I understand -- tax liability
It doesn't matter whether you get a refund it is what your tax liability is, I think you have to have had a liability of over the amount, or paid at least that much as taxes for the refund.  If someone does not have enough withheld but still pays over $800 a year in taxes, they should get something.  But if your tax liability goes down to zero, and you get EVERYTHING back that you have paid in plus more, then I do not think you would get anything.  But again, I am no expert but what I heard is that you had to have paid at least that amount into as taxes after filing.
Oops, liability is his.
x
It has happened to most of us. I just wonder what liability ICs have regarding this. nm

I was deposed regarding a liability case

Patient only had a diagnostic test done where I worked.  Family claimed it was from an accident.  Insurance company bucked it saying it was congenital.  My employer had to sue the family for nonpayment and because of that, the family's lawyer got a subpeona to have a disposition.  I wasn't upset because I knew I had nothing to offer.  The family's lawyer arranged to have it done where I worked (I was in charge of records Quality Assurance and for sending accounts to collections).  The family's lawyer asked his mundane questions.  The insurance company's lawyer kept trying to get me to say the ordering doctor ordered an unnecessary test.  He finally asked me directly if I thought it was an unnecessary test.  I looked him straight in the eyes and told him that I was not qualified to answer that as I did not have a medical degree and had no qualfication to state any test, procedure, etc., was every medically necessary.  If he wanted a medical opinion, he would have to pay someone who was qualified to answer the question.  He turned red and ended the whole thing.

What a total waste of time.

Yes, sorry, the errors and omissions liability
insurance. I have not heard of it before, but there is a company recommended on company board and they require all IC's to have this type of insurance plan within 30 days of hire. The policy was very evasive to me, and I could only see the figure of $84, which I am guessing now might even be weekly? I think I'll forget about that company...
General Liability for Independent Contractors

I have just started a position for a company, and they require that I hold general liability insurance, but am a little lost as far as how to obtain that!  Just wondering if anyone had any pointers for me.

Thank you in advance! :-)

Work for a company in a state that has no state income tax
I think there are 3 or 4 out there (Florida, Texas, and a few others.)  Then you really avoid the tax situation.
Used to work in Cooperstown, NY - and on the way to work is a huge turkey farm
It made me never want to eat turkey again - seeing them all cramped up against the fence and cages, packed tightly, no room to move. Actually, it made me want to do some harm to the farmer who found this acceptable.
Name a state and put every company in that state under suspicion.

Tell what the first letter of the company is and every company with that initial will be suspect.  I would imagine that everyone who works for that company has received an inquiry from department of labor, so they would all be aware of it.

Why do we persist in setting up companies to be torn down when there is no reason for it.  If a company is suspect, then give the name of the company, don't give big hints that cover at least 5 companies, 4 of which may be the best companies to work for, but fall into the category of an alphabetical letter, etc.

Contact your local BBB in your state and in their state if different from yours.

Not mandatory, as you state it depends on your state - sm
or county. Where I am I do not need it; though if I was cutting grass or landscaping I would where I live, makes no sense to me as I am providing a service, but very happy I don't have to have one. We pay personal property tax here and I would have to list all my business related equipment and pay taxes on it every year I was in business. So until I am told otherwise by my county, I will not be getting a business license.
How does MQ provide DQS to a
hospital and you not work for MQ?

If you can prove this is true (which I happen to believe you can), then please help us. Some of people are losing their health insurance and other benefits over loss of lines. To me, this is very serious.
How does MQ provide DQS
So, you have no MQ experience just experience with DQS program. By the way, most MTs who work outside of the hospital DO NOT GET PAID for headers, footers, looking up patient names, etc.; so perhaps, you should just stick to DQS problems at your hospital and not lump MQ into this. No, I am not a MQ advocate, but if you don't work for MQ, you can't really speak about what they pay for and what they don't pay for.

P.S. I am a single mom, struggling MT for the past 15 years, so I am no threat if you think I am MQ management, you need to rethink that.
They will provide it. sm
Just make sure that you ask them.
Please provide a link!
Every prosecutor who has been interviewed has generally told what these people are being held for but no one has come up with specific statements of the suspects.  When questioned on specifics they have said they are not at liberty to divulge information as that could be detrimental to the case, just as it would be in the US.
We can only use the list they provide

Hard to find when you're not sure what the name is even starting with. Even with a data base of 1,000 physicians, it's constant searching. I use the search option and try to search for just one tiny part of the name I can understands, but it takes forever!

yes, they provide equipment. NM
x
Yes, they do provide computer sm
for full or part-time or you may use your own.
because when the dictator's provide the
proper demographics and enunciate clearly, I LOVE this work. I do not do it for the $ or for the bennies. I am 60 years old and don't need either. I just love transcription work. I doubt, though, that you can understand this.
How come you provide no specifics?
Too busy to spend a few minutes typing information that would benefit other people, when obviously you benefit from this bulletin board by reading it and even responding? This website is criticized by people for being overly negative and when people make such harsh comments without having anything to base it on, it makes the poster look suspicious. If you have any facts (or even impressions) to support your claim, please give them. If you don't, why make such strong statements?

Should provide equipment for doc?sm
Am IC who does transcription for local MDs -- want to go digital - Should I purchase the equipment or should ask MD to do this??  help
Provide me with the links. NM
Goldbird
Please provide documentation. Thanks

You need to provide more info (sm)

Specifically, what type of pedal and headset are you using, including whether each one plugs into a USB port (flat rectangular plug) or a gameport/audio jack (mini-phono type plug).  Also, which operating system are you using (Windows 2000, XP, Vista, etc.)?

It sounds like you have a resource conflict, meaning that both devices are trying to use the same "channel", to put it in lay terms.  Such conflicts can be resolved in Control Panel --> Device Manager, but it takes a little technical savvy to do this and such situations have become much more rare with Plug and Play technology.

As a rule, two USB devices will "play nicely" together without any intervention on your part although sometimes you have to install a bit of software from a disk that comes with the device.  So, if only one of your devices is USB might be to pick up a USB version of whichever one is not.  Hopefully, this would be your headset, because you can pick up some very good USB headsets pretty cheaply.

Usually, the company you IC for will provide you

with whatever software you need to work.  You do need to have your own PC, pedal, high-speed internet, etc.  The going rate for IC working for a specific company is usually 8 cpl to 10 cpl for transcription and 4 to 5 cpl for VR editing.  And usually the companies make an offer and you either accept or don't.

If you are looking to get your own accounts, then you aren't an IC, you're self employed, you make the offer and decide the cpl you will charge and then what you charge depends on what part of the country you live in.  Plus when you're self employed, you bill them usually monthly.

why would you sell, take the money, then not provide (sm)
sounds like a scam to me
